Lenovo Halts Sales Of Small-Sized Tablets In The US Market

lenovo thinkpad 8 review 26 640x423Are smaller-sized tablets more popular than their large-screen counterparts? Given the popularity for devices like the iPad mini, the Nexus 7, and the Kindle Fire HDX, you would think so. However those are iOS and Android based devices, but in terms of Windows-based tablets, perhaps not so much, or at least that’s what Lenovo seems to think.

The company has recently confirmed that they will stop selling their smaller Windows tablets in the US, instead choosing to focus on other markets where there is apparently a bigger demand for smaller-sized devices. What this means is that if you were hoping to get your hands on the ThinkPad 8 or Miix 2, you might want to hurry before they are removed completely from the shelves in the US.

According to a statement made by a Lenovo spokesperson, “In North America, we’re seeing stronger interest in the larger screen sizes for Windows tablets and are pleased with initial customer demand for the ThinkPad 10…In other markets, particularly Brazil, China, and Japan, the demand for ThinkPad 8 has been much stronger, so we are adjusting our ThinkPad 8 inventories to meet increasing demand in those markets. If market demand for ThinkPad 8 changes, we will re-evaluate our strategy.”

In the meantime Microsoft is expected to continue offering both tablets for sale via their stores, so if you can’t find them from third-party retailers, you should be able to find them on the Microsoft online store, but what do guys think? Is the trend of smaller tablets starting to die down in the US?

Nokia To Relaunch Into Consumer Market Under HERE Brand [Rumor]

new nokia 640x199While Microsoft might have officially bought Nokia, they did not buy the whole of Nokia, but rather the mobile division of the Finnish company. What this means is that the Nokia brand is still alive and well, although they are not exactly in the spotlight at the moment. However according to NPU’s sources, they claim that Nokia could be getting ready to relaunch themselves into the consumer market under the HERE brand.

Now word has it that due to legal reasons and based on the contract Microsoft made with Nokia, Nokia is apparently not allowed to sell devices under the Nokia brand until 2015/2016, but apparently that does not cover the HERE branding which is what Nokia is expected to debut their new consumer devices under.

Dubbed Project Crystal, Nokia is expected to launch wearables and lifestyle products under the HERE brand. This isn’t the first time we have heard rumors of Nokia working on a wearable product, so there is a possibility that it could be launched in the future. There have also been rumors suggesting that Nokia could be preparing an Android-based camera, and given that Microsoft has essentially washed their hands clean of Android, we guess it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that Nokia would be picking up where Microsoft had left off.

In any case this is just a rumor for now so take it with a grain of salt, but we will be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for more information regarding Nokia’s relaunch into the consumer space, so do check back with us later for the details.

Cabin Kickstarter Brings MagSafe Charging To Your iPhone

cabin magsafe 640x414In the past there have been rumors and seen patents that would suggest that Apple could be interested in bringing MagSafe-like chargers to iOS devices. For those unfamiliar with MagSafe, it’s the charger that is used with MacBooks that plugs to your computer via a magnet. This means that in the event you or someone else trips over the wire, the cable will detach from your computer quickly and easily, as opposed to dragging your computer crashing to the floor.

It’s actually a pretty awesome idea and we’re surprised Apple hasn’t adopted something similar for iOS devices yet, but if you’re sick of waiting, you might be interested to learn that a Chinese company called Hevo Labs has launched a Kickstarter project called Cabin. The project proposes a MagSafe-like adapter for your iPhone which will allow you to charge it via a MagSafe-like connector.

The adapter will be plugged into your iPhone’s Lightning port and it can also be attached to a separate battery case which will provide juice to charge your iPhone. At the same time if you don’t need the case, the adapter will work with the MagSafe-like connector, although we should note that it won’t work with Apple’s original MagSafe, but the concept is still there nonetheless.

This is an awesome idea and if you’re interested in pledging your donation or learning more about Cabin, you can head on over to its Kickstarter page for the details. The company is hoping to raise $50,000 and so far they have managed to raise close to $40,000. With 42 days to go, there is a good chance that the project will be successfully funded. So, any takers?

Google Reportedly Not Thrilled About Samsung’s Tizen Smartwatches

Samsung gear live FB 01 640x426

Facebook Notification on the Gear Live

You would think that Google and Samsung would have an awesome relationship with one another. After all, Samsung is the biggest Android OEM to date and we guess to a certain extent can be thanked for getting Android into as many hands as possible. Unfortunately the reality is that both companies aren’t as close as we’d like to think.

According to a recent report from The Information, it seems that Google isn’t too pleased by Samsung’s choice of using Tizen to power their wearable devices. Despite Samsung launching the Gear Live which runs on Google’s Android Wear, Google’s CEO Larry Page wasn’t too thrilled that Samsung had invested more into Tizen than Android Wear, as evidenced by Samsung’s other wearables such as the Gear 2 and Gear Fit.

This is actually not the first time that Google and Samsung have reportedly butted heads on the issue. Earlier this year we reported that Google had told Samsung to cut back on the Android modifications that they have made to Android. As Samsung users are probably aware, these modifications come in the form of their TouchWiz UI which dramatically changes the look and feel of Android.

We guess there are some who don’t mind and actually like using TouchWiz, but at the same time for those who don’t, Google is worried about the negative impression it will leave on the Android platform, which would be far from accurate since TouchWiz is nowhere near what stock Android is. That being said, Samsung is said to be getting ready to launch Tizen-based smartphones which could be a way for them to lessen their dependence on Google.

Jailbreaker Geohot Joins Google’s Project Zero’s Team Of Hackers

geohot 940x719 640x489A couple of days ago, Google announced Project Zero which is basically Google’s plan to keep the internet safe. This is done by keeping an eye out for potential vulnerabilities across all sorts of software and platforms, and then helping the developers plug it up before it gets out of hand and something bad happens.

To do that, Google would have to put together a dream team of hackers, and it seems that one of those hackers has been revealed to be none other than George Hotz, who also goes by the handle geohot. For those unfamiliar with Hotz, he was the first person in the world to jailbreak the iPhone back in 2007 at the age of 17, and has since gone on to release several more jailbreaks and hacks, one of which involved the PlayStation 3 which landed Hotz in a spot of trouble with Sony.

While Hotz had already achieved notoriety, he was approached by Chris Evans, a Google security engineer, after he had won the $150,000 prize at Google’s Pwnium hacking competition where he managed to hack through the security of Chrome OS. He was offered the position as a paid intern where he worked alongside Ben Hawkes, Tavis Ormandy, and Brit Ian Beer.

Hotz will be part of the small but elite team of hackers under the Project Zero banner at Google. The Mountain View company is said to be on the lookout for more members to add to the team and have plans to add at least ten full-time hackers in the near future. It’s an interesting effort by Google and we have to wonder how it will work out in the long-run.

Apple’s Sapphire Production Runs Into Issues, Could Be Limited To 128GB 5.5-inch Models [Rumor]

apple logo3So word on the street is that Apple could be using sapphire for the iPhone 6’s display. This has reportedly been “confirmed” by an expert who believes that the rumors have credibility, however according to a recent report, it seems that apparently there have been some production issues regarding sapphire which means that supply will be somewhat limited at the start.

What does this mean? Could it mean even more delays to the iPhone 6? Well maybe not, because according to the rumors, Apple could instead use that limited supply of sapphire for the 128GB 5.5-inch iPhone 6, so if you’re willing to pay more for the larger iPhone and pay even more for a larger capacity, chances are you will most likely end up getting a regular glass display instead.

We’re not sure if Apple plans to reintroduce sapphire to the iPhone 6 at a later date when supply becomes more readily available, but for now it has been suggested that it could be limited to the highest-end model, which is a little unfortunate given that there has been a lot of fuss regarding the use of sapphire in Apple’s upcoming handset.

In the meantime other OEMs don’t appear to be too enthused about the use of sapphire, claiming that while the material is tougher than glass and harder to scratch, it is a lot more brittle, meaning that when it drops, chance of it cracking will be higher as it is not as flexible compared to other materials like Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully Apple will announce something in the next couple of months.

How to Start a Business After Multiple Failed Attempts as an Entrepreneur

Did you know that Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates’ first business, Traf-O-Data, was a flop? Or that before he was president, Abraham Lincoln had a retail store that went bankrupt? As an entrepreneur, it’s important to recognize and understand that failure is a part of business. Many successful business owners have failed in a business venture at some point in their entrepreneurial career.

According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of “entrepreneur” is a person who starts a business and is willing to risk loss in order to make money. The key piece of this definition is willing to risk loss. Going into business is a risk–but where there is no risk, there is no reward. It’s the reward of entrepreneurship that should encourage you to start again after a failure.

If you have had multiple failed business attempts in the past, here are some keys to help you start again.

Before you begin, take some time for reflection:

Evaluate why the business failed. Write down everything that went well, and everything that didn’t. Think about what you can do differently next time if you are faced with a similar situation. How can you handle it better? How can you improve in your problem-solving? There is nothing wrong with making a mistake. The key is to learn from those past mistakes so you don’t repeat them. Take the knowledge you’ve gained from your experience and use it to build your next venture.

Separate your identity from your business. A true entrepreneur is resilient. They are able to bounce back and recover quickly after a failure or misstep in business. You didn’t fail; the business did. Although you do have to reflect and assess why it happened, it’s important to not lose confidence in yourself. A failed business does not define who you are as an entrepreneur.

Assess your attitude. In order to succeed, you will need determination and a positive attitude. Many top entrepreneurs share a key trait: optimism. You have to be able to find the silver lining in every situation.

After reflecting, the best thing to do is keep moving forward. Forge ahead with these tips:

First, find a product or service you are passionate about that will fill a need in the marketplace. What can you offer and how can you make it stand out? Begin to develop your new business plan. To be a successful business, you have to solve someone’s problem. Take time to do research on your business idea and the market that you believe will support it.

Find your “why.” Why does this business exist? Why is the company here? When you have a full understanding of why, you then have a motivator and driving force to help propel your business into success. Knowing the why in your business will be the catalyst that inspires action. When you have a unique and genuine why, you will set your business apart from the competition.

Calculate the costs. Being able to accurately estimate business expenses and project income is key to success. Make sure to have a budget for the expenses, and set sales goals for the income. Although it is understandable that every business doesn’t profit immediately, the closer you are to your estimations, the better chance for success you will have. Learn how to keep your expectations high while remaining realistic.

Build a dream team. Having the right people in place on your team can make a world of difference in the success of your business. Find and hire people that are willing to make your vision their vision. Find people with strengths in areas that you know you need help with–it might be sales, marketing, social media, scheduling, or writing. Take time to carefully search for and select the right people to fill each position needed on your dream team. Communicate the company’s mission, vision and values, and make sure each team member puts them at the forefront of what they do.

Set clear goals. You and your team need clear goals to aim for. Having well-written goals will provide a road map for the direction of your business. You will also gain clarity regarding the action steps to take to reach them. Set goals for everything, and review them often.

If all else fails, keep trying. Pick up and try again. Don’t ever give up! There is another side to the blood, sweat and tears of entrepreneurship: among other things, it’s the freedom, the fulfillment and the unlimited income potential. In the end, the payoff for your hard work as an entrepreneur is guaranteed, but only if you keep at it!

NSA Workers Might Be Sharing Your Nude Photos

According to Edward Snowden, the former government contractor who leaked key documents detailing the National Security Agency’s broad surveillance tactics, workers at the embattled agency routinely circulate nude photographs discovered in their data sweeps.

In a lengthy video interview with The Guardian published Thursday, Snowden said he had observed NSA employees passing around “sexually compromising” photos picked up during surveillance.

Snowden explained:

Now in the course of their daily work, they stumble across something that is completely unrelated to their work in any sense. For example, an intimate nude photo of someone in a sexually compromising situation, but they’re extremely attractive.

So what do they do? They turn around and they show their coworker. And their coworker says ‘Oh hey, that’s great. Show it to Bill down the way.’ And then Bill sends it to George, George sends it to Tom, and sooner or later this person’s whole life has been seen by all of these other people.

It’s never reported, no one ever knows about it because the auditing of these systems is incredibly weak. The fact that your private records, your private lives, records of your intimate moments have been taken from your private communication stream, from your intended recipient, by the government without any specific need, is a violation of your rights.

The NSA responded to the claim in an email to Forbes, but did not confirm nor deny the practice.

“NSA is a professional foreign-intelligence organization with a highly trained workforce, including brave and dedicated men and women from our armed forces,” NSA spokesperson Vanee Vines said. “As we have said before, the agency has zero tolerance for willful violations of the agency’s authorities or professional standards, and would respond as appropriate to any credible allegations of misconduct.”

Joe Biden Tells Progressives The Country Needs Them Now More Than Ever

DETROIT — Vice President Joe Biden took the stage Thursday at Netroots Nation, telling an exuberant crowd that the United States has reached an “inflection point” and progressives are needed now more than ever.

In his first-ever appearance at Netroots, the country’s largest gathering of progressive activists, Biden said they face a rare opportunity to bend the arc of history. Without them, he said, some of the fundamental principles of the country would be at risk.

“We have probably reached this point in our history three to four times. Things are going to change because the world is changing,” Biden said. “What are we going to do? Our hands are on the wheel. We get a chance to bend history just a little bit.”

“We have to be crystal clear on what are the fundamental organizing principles we think this democracy rests on,” he said. “And fight like hell to make sure those principles are maintained.”

Biden offered his list of fundamentals, which included expanding marriage equality, ending workplace discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and addressing income inequality. Although his speech hit on a number of accomplishments, from ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to pushing the Violence Against Women Act as a senator, it was clear that Biden sees same-sex marriage as a major piece of his legacy.

The vice president recalled endorsing marriage equality during a 2012 appearance on “Meet the Press,” before President Barack Obama had taken the same position. He added that the credit belongs not to him, but to the LGBT community and grassroots activists, for moving the ball forward on same-sex marriage.

“I didn’t free the LGBT community. What you all did, what they did, was free every straight woman and straight man in this country. They freed us,” Biden said.

The comment was met with resounding applause by a crowd that frequently erupted into cheers during his speech. But the reception to Biden wasn’t universally warm.

Activists with the LGBT rights group GetEqual stood near the front of the room during Biden’s entire speech, protesting what they have called “asterisk equality.” The group has been a vocal opponent of providing a broad exemption in the proposed Employment Non-Discrimination Act that would allow certain religious and religiously affiliated employers to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Immigration activists, including two staff members from the youth-led group United We Dream, also interrupted Biden’s speech, shouting, “Stop deporting our families!” They left the room as the vice president asked them to let him discuss one issue at a time.

Biden’s presence at Netroots further stoked speculation that he is eyeing a potential run for president in 2016. It was his second appearance before progressives this week, after he spoke Wednesday to Generation Progress, a youth-focused initiative associated with the Center for American Progress.

If there is to be a candidate Biden, his pitch at Netroots appeared to center on the idea that he has both the passion and the pragmatism to fight for the issues at the top of the progressive agenda. He pointed to his experience stepping in to help resolve conflicts, such as the 2011 payroll tax fight and 2012 fiscal cliff debate, when Congress was at an impasse.

“I’m always Mikey when it comes to negotiating with the House and Senate,” Biden said, referring to the child from the iconic Life cereal commercials who got handed the task neither of his brothers wanted.

One of the Democratic Party’s other big stars, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, is slated to speak at Netroots on Friday. Biden took a moment to praise Warren, saying, “She’s first rate. She’s a solid person.”

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declined an invitation to appear at Netroots. But Ready for Hillary, a pro-Clinton group laying the groundwork for her potential presidential bid, is participating in the event and hosting a party for its attendees.

Ready for Warren, a band of activists trying to convince the senator to run for president, is also at Netroots and plans to use the four-day gathering to build momentum around a possible campaign. Obama spoke at the event in 2007, along with several other Democratic presidential candidates at the time.

Although Biden is regarded as a viable candidate for 2016, his detractors often point to his tendency to go off script as a potential liability. On Thursday, the vice president took a jab at the media for dubbing him gaffe-prone.

“I could almost hear the press salivating: ‘Will Joe be Joe today?'” Biden said. “I make no apologies. None.”

It was perhaps the biggest applause line of his speech.
