This Is How You Can Rock A Denim Skirt And Look Like A Grown Up

We’re just going to come right out and say it: Denim skirts need to become your new wardrobe staple.

Hear us out — your favorite ’90s trend can look polished without reminding you of your regrettable high school days. The item is versatile (celebrities have been rocking them in every style) and can easily be paired with almost anything in your closet. So whether you’re brunching, Tindering or hitting the beach with friends, denim skirts make for perfect late summer outfits.

But if you’re like us and already rid your closet of most things you wore back in the day, fear not, we did all your research for you. And don’t worry about transitioning this look into fall, either. After all, nothing screams bad ass like motorcycle boots and dark denim.

Here are 11 ways to revisit the look this summer:

1. Make the denim skirt your new uniform by tucking in a patterned blouse. Don’t be afraid to attempt tone-on-tone! The look will easily transition from day to night.

2. Opt for a maxi denim skirt with buttons up the front so you can look more leggy and less “Little House on the Prairie.” The slit will alleviate the frumpiness factor and give the look an edgy spin.

3. Three words: Denim on denim. Spice up your Canadian tux with a skirt, just be sure to choose washes that are slightly off hue.

4. We often associate denim skirts with our youth so choose grown up accessories like a structured bag or cool sunnies.

5. Opt for a high-waisted midi skirt — the classic silhouette can bring some formality to an otherwise casual outfit.

6. Keep things effortless in a flowy tee that balances out the length of a mini skirt.

7. Make it flirty! Look for a skirt with a twist. This one boasts multi-wash panels in an A-line silhouette.

8. Slip into a pencil skirt with a simple crop top and accessorize with a bold pop of color.

9. And finally: Because…Rihanna.

The Definitive Reason Heirloom Tomatoes Are Just Plain Better

We hate to be the ones to tell you this, but if you’ve never had an heirloom tomato than you’ve never tasted a real tomato. With tomato season just upon us — and dreams of yellow, red, pink and purple slices on our plates — we began to wonder what it was that made heirloom tomatoes so much better than the conventional ones you can buy at the grocery store any time of year. We know they don’t look the same. And we know they cost more. But why?

We turned to expert gardener John Coykendall at the most magical place on earth, Blackberry Farm in Walland Tennessee, to fill us in on the heirloom-tomato hype. He was gracious enough to give us his time and to answer our questions — and he perfectly articulated what it is that makes heirloom tomatoes so great, using the best analogies we’ve ever heard.

***

Let us cut right to the chase: Why are heirlooms better than industrially-grown or hybrid tomatoes?
The answer is simple: The old ones tasted like a real tomato. What we’re growing today, I would hardly classify as a real tomato. I suppose they’re alive, but the resemblance stops there. We had it right 100 years ago.

One thing is, you get all the subtle differences in heirlooms [that you don’t get in the other tomatoes]. Your yellow heirloom tomatoes are milder. And your red heirlooms have a lot more acidic quality. Something interesting of note is that if you look at a canning recipe from the 1930s or 40s, you didn’t have to add anything to it; those tomatoes had a very high acid content. Today’s tomatoes, all the flavor and taste and everything else has been bred out of it. So, if you look at the latest Ball canning book they’ve upped the processing time and also recommend you put a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice [to account for that]. There’s a big big difference.

We had a lady visit the other day who asked, “What do I do if I want a nice fresh tomato in January? I said, “Go to the store, buy a can of Romas, dump them in your salad bowl and dress it with your salad dressing — it’ll taste 100 percent more like a tomato than what you buy at the store that time of year.” It’s true — that’s just the way it is. The season is short, but you relish that time that you do have them. They don’t last forever. I always tell the guests that tomatoes are like Santa Claus, they don’t come but once and year so take it and be thankful. The rest of the time you’re going to have to settle on something else that’s in season.

I know you’ve eaten — probably by mistake — a winter tomato that has a plastic skin and a styrofoam interior. Yeah, those ones from South Florida, the green ones, the baseball team uses those for batting practice before they head north. You couldn’t put a dent in one if you tried.

What else is special about heirloom tomatoes, aside from taste and their unique characteristics?
They’re so beautiful. Some of them are solid yellow, some have pink modeling to them. There’s one called Mr. Stripey. All of those sliced up together aesthetically speaking make a statement on the plate. They speak for themselves. People always ask when I give a talk if I make notes. And I say I don’t have to. If I have beans in front of me on the table each one of them has their own story — and it’s the same with the heirloom tomatoes.

All this talk about heirlooms, can you tell us what qualifies a tomato as an heirloom?
The rule of thumb for any kind of heirloom in the seed world is that something has to be at least 50 years old to be an heirloom. Or it has to be associated with an area, a farm or specific family. I’m an heirloom, plus 21 years.

How did the bland tomatoes at the grocery store become so common place?
In the early days we had farming communities all around us. Even outside NYC, they had the infrastructure for local farming. But that’s gone today. The tomatoes they grew in South Florida then had that wonderful flavor, but it was meant to go from the vine right to your dinner table. Those tomatoes won’t ship — the skins are soft and they bruise. They would go to pieces in no time. Now, they make tomatoes to ship. Bred for mechanical harvest, shipping, shelf life, etc.

I’ll give you a perfect example of that: we had someone doing an internship with us and she brought some of those tomatoes in. She was going to have them for lunch, but we got busy and she forgot. The next day I made a display out of them with some corn shucks, just different decorations. And I left those there until the end of March. I took everything down and lo and behold those tomatoes were still sitting there. Looked liked something out of King Tuts tomb — all shriveled up, but it never did rot. A mummified tomato. [That’s what they sell at the grocery store.]

Is there a national seal of approval for heirlooms?
[In short, no.] The way of knowing is the taste test. Once you get home and taste it you know you got the real thing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an heirloom tomato faked — it either is or it isn’t.

The Secret To Buying Cheap Wine That Actually Tastes Good

Everyone knows that buying a bottle of wine for under $10 can sometimes feel like a gamble. Sure, it doesn’t hurt the wallet, but it can offend your taste buds — and do a number on your head. But now we have the much-beloved Jamie Oliver to thank for his handy guide to buying cheap wine you can actually drink.

The YouTube channel, Jamie Oliver’s Drink Tube, has debuted an episode that shows you the steps and tricks to finding a great bottle that won’t break the bank. The first step is to shop at your local wine shop, which admittedly isn’t an option for everyone, but bear with us. Second, is to look for wines from Spain and Portugal, which offer lots of complexity for a good price. Just because California is closer or France has the big wine reputation, doesn’t mean they’re going to deliver when you’re trying to pinch pennies. Also, be on the look out for key words such as Old Vine. And lastly, use the right glasses. According to Oliver’s wine guru: yes, glass size does make a difference.

But don’t take our word for it, watch the video above and hear it for yourself — and take notes.

(For the record, if you haven’t seen his guide to making strawberry ice cream in just 45 seconds, it’s a must-watch.)

LG G3 Beat Announced For Europe And CIS Markets

lg g3 beat 640x480It wasn’t too long ago that LG officially announced their flagship handset, the LG G3. The device packed some impressive specs, such as a QHD display and a laser-guided autofocus system for its camera. However if the phone was a bit too pricey for your liking, you might be interested to learn that LG has announced a slightly more low-end version called the LG G3 Beat.

The LG G3 Beat isn’t new per se as it was announced in China back in June, but according to LG, the handset is expected to make its way to South Korea on the 18th of July followed by Europe and the Commonweath of Independent States in the following weeks, so we guess it will be available for purchase outside of China in the coming month or so.

In terms of specs, the handset is pretty much the same as the China variant. This means that users can look forward to a 5-inch 720p HD display and a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor. It will also pack 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage that is expandable via microSD.

The LG G3 Beat will also feature an 8MP rear-facing camera with a laser autofocus system, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, a 2,540mAh battery, and will run on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. No word on pricing but we expect that it will be priced different from country to country.

Microsoft Temporarily Halts Rollout Of Windows Phone 8.1 Update

chrome windowsphone 81Earlier it was reported that Microsoft had begun rolling out the Windows Phone 8.1 update to those who have the Developer Preview, as well as to owners of the Nokia Lumia 625 and Lumia 925. That being said, it looks like the rollout of the update has since been halted. This is apparently due to some issues experienced by Windows Phone 8 users who use BitLocker to upgraded to Windows Phone 8.1.

According to a statement issued by Microsoft, “We are currently investigating the issue. We have paused delivery of the update to customers using the Preview for Developers, and will resume once a fix is in place. Customers whose phones have been affected should use the Nokia Software Recovery Tool to return your Lumia to a normal commercial software state before downloading the Lumia Cyan update.”

As it stands it would seem that those who own the Developer Preview of Windows Phone 8.1 will just have to wait until Microsoft can fix the issue and continue the rollout. Alternatively they are welcome to rollback to Windows Phone 8 using the Nokia Software Recovery Tool and then update to Windows Phone 8.1. It’s a bit convoluted but if you absolutely have to have the update, then we guess this is one way to do it.

In any case we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more information regarding the update’s status, so do check back with us at a later date for the details.
