Some recreate scenes from the movie using Minecraft, but one user has gone all out. Rather than create scenes or crowd-source footage using Minecraft, someone has recreated the entire film. Paradise Decay has spent three years on this labor of love, building … Continue reading

The Yeti Hopper Cooler will keep your drinks chilled all weekend long

Yeti Hopper Cooler Bag

When we go on a weekend excursion, it’s always best to bring our own snacks and beverages rather than be gouged by local gas stations or eateries. The only problem is keeping said munchies at the right temperature. Going to the lake or on a weekend camp-out for a music fest is not always done in perfect weather.

If you wish you didn’t have to worry about the ice melting out of your cooler after an hour and constantly draining out water, then the Yeti Hopper Cooler might be a breath of fresh air. This is a bag with an inch of insulation on either side, an inch and a half on the bottom, and an air-tight zipper that will make sure nothing will spill out even if it’s upside down. While the inside of the bag is waterproof, the rest is water-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about a little rain or spilling something on it. The inside can hold up to 5.2 gallons, which means you’ll have plenty of room for snacks and drinks for a weekend or sunny afternoon.

There is a padded shoulder strap and handle straps for easy transport, and its squishy nature will make it far easier to stuff into a packed car (moreso than the rectangular plastic coolers). While this $299.99 bag would be perfect for the summer, it sadly won’t be available until October. If you’re really deadset on getting an insanely high-priced cooler bag, then you can put in your order now.

Available for pre-order on yeticoolers, found via dailymail

Finally Energy Efficient Lightbulbs – a Bright Idea!

Untitled-13

When you check the store shelves you can tell that your plain old everyday incandescent lightbulbs are getting pushed aside by quite a few more energy efficient options. Yup, your “normal” bulbs have taken on odd shapes, and worse, LED’s and CFL’s don’t give your home that welcoming warm glow of days gone by. Yes, there’s an energy savings, but at what price?

I’d like to introduce you to Finally, a company devoted to developing new lighting technology for your home, specifically a lightbulb that would deliver the same warm omnidirectional glow of your traditional incandescent lightbulbs, without the same energy waste, with a long lifespan, and at an affordable price.

Finally Lightbulbs utilize induction, a lighting system that was developed at around the same time incandescent technology was born. Induction systems are still used today, but are most often found in commercial applications, like warehouses, and garages because of the space requirements, induction was quite impractical for home use.

So, the folks over at Finally compressed the induction system, and utilizing copper wires rather than “old fashioned” filaments, they managed to get a bulb with the best attributes of the induction process and created something they call Acandescence™,  a brand new lighting technology that produces the same warm light as an incandescent, but with energy efficiency, and affordability.

The Finally 60 Watt Replacement Bulb is available now for pre-order, at right around 10 bucks, with the 75 and 100 watt Finally bulbs available soon. Get yours from shopfinallybulbs.com Expect shipping late summer 2014.

xperia t2 ultra

Great news today if you happen to have a Sony Xperia T2 Ultra or T2 Ultra Dual. The company formally announced today that the Android 4.4 KitKat update is being rolled out for both of these devices. Not only does the update bring everything we have come to expect from KitKat, but it also brings some exclusive customizations that Sony has slapped on top of the core OS.

Chief among those is the tweaked status bar and quick settings which Sony says are now more customizable and intuitive. These are buzzwords alright so end users will have to pass judgement whether it is indeed the case.

Those who have a PlayStation 4 will find the user interface to be quite similar, Sony has also thrown in new launch animation and live wallpapers for the lock and home screens. Sony’s entire native app portfolio also gets updated so nearly a dozen apps now offer a much more improved user experience.

The update add Sony’s custom interface experience called “Xperia Themes” which brings downloadable UI packs from Sony Select, users can choose from up to 280 assets from a variety of styles.

As always expect this update to roll out in stages. Even though Sony has announced the release it may take a while for the update to go live across all regions. The company says that the next devices in line for the KitKat treatment at the Xperia E1, Xperia M2 and the Xperia M2 Dual.

BlackBerry Shows Off Its Virtual Assistant

blackberry assistant

Its no secret that BlackBerry’s devices have lacked software and services that are offered by its competitors. The company seems to be on a mission to make lost ground now. Today it showed off BlackBerry Assistant. Its a virtual voice assistant much like Siri. The company showed it off on a BlackBerry Passport, a new device which some believe might finally turn around the company’s fortunes in the competitive mobile device market.

BlackBerry Assistant can handle a variety of tasks, users can ask it to search email and calendar, find out what’s trending on Twitter, send BBM notes and even send event invitations. Like other assistants it adapts and learns the user’s habits over time. The company claims that users will be surprised by how accurate Assistant is at recognizing requests.

The Assistant is designed to compatible with any Bluetooth device thus making it useful behind the wheel as well. It can read latest email messages if asked to do so and will also mark them unread if asked, all hands-free. It takes notes and reminders without having to leave the Assistant app. Ask it to turn on the flashlight and it does, same goes for turning it off.

Users can also speak to BlackBerry Assistant and have it adjust notification settings. So for example if you’re in a meeting and don’t want to be disturbed by social media notifications or text messages, tell Assistant that you want “Phone calls only, please” and it will change the notification settings accordingly.

On the face of it BlackBerry Assistant appears to be a very useful feature but we’ll know for certain once we get to use it. The company hasn’t released a video preview as yet and it has not confirmed whether the Assistant is exclusive to BlackBerry Passport or if it will come to older BB10 devices as well through the OS 10.3 update.

Amazon Reportedly Testing Unlimited Monthly eBook Subscription Service

kindle unlimited amazon 640x205

As mobile devices and e-readers turn more and more people towards ebooks and audiobooks instead of paperbacks, its only a matter of time before competition between “all you can read” services heats up. People who like reading books in digital format would love to have a huge digital library at their fingertips for just a few dollars per month, kind of like the on-demand music streaming services everyone seems to love these days. Amazon might have something for us along these lines in the near future. The company is reportedly testing a new monthly unlimited ebook subscription service called Kindle Unlimited.

Test pages for the new service were first spotted by the eagle eyes users at Kindle Boards but Amazon quickly took them down. But since this is the internet and not really disappears once it comes online, the pages are still available through Google Cache.

The test pages reveal that Kindle Unlimited will offer users over 600,000 ebooks and audiobooks on any device for $9.99 per month. The home page lists several popular titles categorized by genre and include popular series like Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games.

Amazon Prime subscribers already have access to a lending library with over 500,000 titles but there are two caveats. Subscribers can only borrow one book per month and can only read it either on a Kindle device or one that can run a Kindle application.

Kindle Unlimited will pit Amazon against the likes of Oyster and Scribd which offer a similar service. Amazon has so far not commented on this report so it is unclear when it plans on launching Kindle Unlimited.
