3D Printed Nebula Scale Model: Do You Want to Print a Star Cloud?

With the right tools, you can 3D print almost anything: a quadcopter, an action figure version of yourself or even a pixel perfect replica of a painting. But a team of astronomers were able to print something that’s literally out of this world. They managed to create a high resolution 3D model and a printed replica of the Homunculus nebula, even though the cloud is 7,500 light years away.

The astronomers gathered data about the Homunculus nebula in 2012 using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope and X-Shooter spectrograph. They then turned that data into a 3D model using a program called Shape. The 3D model and its printed equivalent gave scientists more insight about the nebula’s origin.

Star Trek Phaser Remote Control Zaps TV Programs Back to the Delta Quadrant

ThinkGeek has just revealed one of its big toys for this year’s SDCC, and it’s a doozy. I always have thought of my TV remote as a zapper of sorts, so it only makes sense that you’d use a phaser to change channels. So I give you, the official Star Trek Phaser Universal Remote Control.

Designed using 3D laser scans of one of the rare original prop phasers from The Original Series, this impressive 1:1 replica is made from nickel and brass-plated die cast metal, and comes with a magnetic metal stand. You can even detach the Phaser I component from the Phaser II section.

The remote not only can be used for fun, flashing in colors, emitting phaser and Enterprise sound effects, and providing vibration feedback, but it also works as a remote control for pretty much any infrared-compatible electronics. When used as a remote, you use flick and tilt gestures to change channels, skip audio tracks or adjust volume. In total, the remote can store up to 36 commands. It’s even got a built-in TV-B-Gone sort of circuit which lets you zap off just about any TV you point it at. I’ve also been told it stuns Klingons, but don’t tell anyone you heard it from me.

The Phaser Remote comes packed in a durable hard case, with custom moulded foam inserts, and a Starship Enterprise screwdriver for attaching or removing its pistol grip.
