Google Begins Taking Requests For Project Ara

project ara 640x426Google’s Project Ara is an exciting project to look forward to. After all how many times have we complained about how a certain smartphone would be perfect if it had this feature or if it had that feature, and so on. However rarely do OEMs make a smartphone that is able to please everyone, which is what makes Project Ara so exciting – the ability to make the phone of your dreams.

Now last we heard, Project Ara had entered into its beta phase and now according to reports, Google has begun taking requests for the handset. Now we should note that the requests for the device won’t be targeted at end-users. Instead Google is prioritizing developers who are looking for Project Ara handsets to test their boards with.

Since Google can’t possibly make every type of board out there, they have tasked third-party developers to come up with ideas for modules that could be attached to the handset. For example we’ve heard how Toshiba will be supplying chipsets for the phone, and how Sennheiser could feature their audio technology in the handset as well.

Request submissions are expected to be in by this Thursday and will ship out to the lucky few by the end of the month. Google will be holding another round of testing after that with the deadline running until the 17th of August. Assuming everything goes according to plan, Project Ara could see a release as soon as early 2015.

Larger Display Not Necessarily A Priority For iPhone Customers [Survey]

iphone 6 clone 1 640x473The iPhone 6 is launching later this year and we guess that’s something that many of us have come to expect. Now word on the street has it that the iPhone 6 will sport a larger display – in fact the rumors claim it will come in 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch sizes, so depending on your needs and preference, customers will apparently have two sizes to choose from.

That being said, is a larger display truly what iPhone owners are looking for in the next iPhone? Well according to website WalletHero, they decided to poll their customers to find out what features they are looking for in the next iPhone, and interestingly enough, a larger display was not the number one priority.

According to their findings, 97% of customers voted as better battery life as being the number one preference. This is followed by a larger screen with 85% of the votes, followed by a better camera in third place at 73% of the votes. Surprisingly a faster processor is not as prioritized as evidenced by 43% of the votes, and it seems that price is not a huge factor as well as only 35% of customers voted for a lower price point.

In fact the survey seems to be more or less in line with an internal survey by Apple which also revealed that longer battery life was a priority, and that a larger display was in third place. So what do you guys think? Do you agree with the results of the survey and that a long lasting battery life is more important than a larger display?

4 Food Myths Making You Tired All The Time

We all want enough energy to live our lives to the fullest, but the reality for many Americans is that they have just enough to get through the day. Rather than powering through your daily grind, the day grinds you to a pulp and you have little left over to tend to your children, enjoy your relationship or engage in your hobbies.

America's Best Hospital Is…

Some hospitals are more expert than others in caring for patients with life-threatening or rare conditions. And people facing such health challenges need every bit of help they can get. That’s why U.S. News & World Report has published annual rankings of the nation’s Best Hospitals for the last quarter-century.

[See the Complete Rankings: Best Hospitals 2014-15.]

The 2014-15 rankings cover nearly 5,000 medical centers across the country and span 16 medical specialties from cancer to urology. Hospitals with very high scores in at least six specialties earned a spot on the Honor Roll. Just 17 hospitals made this year’s list.

[See Pictures of the 17 Honor Roll Hospitals.]

For the first time, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, claimed the No. 1 Honor Roll spot, barely edging out Massachusetts General Hospital. Johns Hopkins Hospital, which in 2012 lost a 21-year first-place reign, was No. 3.

Sipping Tips to Keep You Cool (and Slim) This Summer

As summer heats up, you’re probably paying more attention to your fluid intake (or at least you should be). When it’s hot outside and you’re keeping active, dehydration can leave you feeling light-headed and disoriented. Cooling off with refreshing beverages can keep your body hydrated and your waistline intact — if you know which ones to drink.

While a Caribbean cocktail may be what you have in mind, remember that alcoholic beverages can dehydrate you and awaken your appetite (read: unwanted calories).

Did you know that a cocktail such as a piña colada can have as much as 300 calories! While you may start with good intentions to stick to a couple drinks, four drinks, a few appetizers and some dessert later and you’ll be full of regrets!

Here are some tips to keep cool and slim this summer:

Keep the Fluids Flowing: You don’t have to drink just plain water to be hydrated. All non-alcoholic beverages count toward fluid needs, including juice, milk, coffee, tea, sports drinks and sodas. Yes, caffeinated drinks count too!

Eat to Stay Hydrated: Eating fruits and vegetables with a high content of water is a delicious way to hydrate and they provide you with a boost in your daily nutrients. Some of my favorites are cucumbers, watermelon, grapes, and peaches. Freeze them or make them into fun small popsicles for an extra refreshing cooling effect.

Have a “Mocktail”: Don’t let alcohol get in the way of enjoying your summer outings. Instead opt for your favorite flavorful “mocktails” that incorporate low- and no-calorie beverage mixers or juices instead of alcohol. Try adding a handful of mint sprigs and 3-4 lime slices to some lemon-lime soda and a handful of pomegranate seeds for a tart punch of color.

Take the Flow On the Go: Make sure to keep a reusable water bottle with your favorite beverage with you at all times. If you’re active in hot weather, it’s easy to get dehydrated quickly! Remember to drink fluids BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER vigorous exercise. For physical activity lasting longer than 1-1.5 hours, sport drinks help replace important carbohydrates and electrolytes, in addition to fluids.

Manage Calories: If you get bored with water, look for beverages made with low- and no-calorie sweeteners. They are refreshing, safe and offer a variety of flavors without adding calories.

Stay hydrated and happy this summer.

5 Myths About Soy You Probably Still Believe

You certainly don’t have to eat soy products, even as a vegetarian or vegan. But for many, options like veggie burgers, soy milk and miso soup make for convenient and tasty meat- or dairy-free dishes.

Despite how ubiquitous soy and its derivatives have become in our diets, confusion persists: Is soy healthy for men? And what’s the deal with soy and breast cancer?

That’s why we’re setting the record straight on some of the biggest soy myths that just won’t go away. Here are a few biggies to stop believing, stat.

MYTH: Soy isn’t a good source of protein.
soy myths
Fact: Vegetarians have had it with all the protein preaching. In fact, soybeans are what’s known as a complete protein, meaning they contain all of the essential amino acids we have to get from food because they can’t be made by the body. A cup of cooked soybeans contains about 22 grams of protein, almost as much as a serving of steak. Tofu, however, contains significantly less, with just nine grams in a three-ounce serving of extra-firm, and just six grams in three ounces of soft tofu.

MYTH: Soy-based imitation-meat products are nutritious because they’re vegetarian.
Fact: Shaping anything that originated as a soybean into something that appears to be a chicken nugget, a sausage or a turkey breast usually requires quite a bit of processing, which can lead to lengthy ingredients lists. Many of these products are also high in sodium and fat, added to mock that missing meaty flavor. Like with just about every food, eating soy the closer to its natural state, the better.

MYTH: Soy causes breast cancer.
miso soup
Fact: Yes, some breast cancer grows in the presence of estrogen, and yes, soy can act like estrogen. But there’s no direct link saying soy can cause cancer. In some animal studies, pure isoflavones, the compound in soy bearing the chemical similarities to estrogen, have been shown to promote tumor growth, HuffPost Healthy Living’s Meredith Melnick reported. However, humans both process isoflavones differently than rodents and isoflavone supplements vary greatly from dietary soy.

Among observational studies of humans who get high amounts of dietary soy, findings have shown either no link to breast cancer or lower rates of the disease. “Even though animal studies have shown mixed effects on breast cancer with soy supplements, studies in humans have not shown harm from eating soy foods,” Marji McCullough, ScD, RD, strategic director of nutritional epidemiology for the American Cancer Society wrote for the organization. “Moderate consumption of soy foods appears safe for both breast cancer survivors and the general population, and may even lower breast cancer risk.”

MYTH: If you don’t like tofu, soy protein supplements are a smart alternative.
Fact: Because of the suggested health implications of soy supplements in some of the animal studies mentioned above and others, most experts advise against supplementing with soy until more research is conducted. Short-term use is considered safe, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, but the impact of long-term use of soy isoflavones is not yet fully understood.

MYTH: Men shouldn’t eat soy.

Fact: The concerns about the estrogen-like activities of soy have caused some to worry that soy products could decrease a man’s testosterone, but clinical studies don’t support this fear. There are at least two reports of men who have experienced feminizing changes in their bodies (one of whom had Type 1 diabetes) after consuming high doses of soy, but even at higher-than-average rates of consumption — higher even than what’s typical among Asian cultures — science has found no evidence to caution men against eating soy. In fact, men may even benefit from some dietary soy, as it seems to decrease prostate cancer risk.

Tobacco Company Reynolds American To Buy Rival Lorillard For $27 Billion

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Cigarette maker Reynolds American Inc. is planning to buy rival Lorillard Inc. for about $25 billion in a deal to combine two of the nation’s oldest and biggest tobacco companies.

The deal announced Tuesday would create a formidable No. 2 to rival Altria Group Inc., owner of Philip Morris USA, and will likely face scrutiny from regulators.

The companies value the deal at about $27 billion including debt.

Reynolds markets Camel, Pall Mall and Natural American Spirit cigarettes. Lorillard sells Newport, Maverick and Kent cigarettes.

The companies say they will sell the Kool, Salem, Winston, Maverick and blu eCigs brands to Imperial Tobacco Group for $7.1 billion to ease regulatory concerns about competition.

Afghanistan Suicide Car Bomb Kills Scores

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan general says the death toll from a suicide car bombing in the country’s eastern Paktika province has climbed to 89, with more than 40 people wounded.

The blast took place on Tuesday when the bomber detonated his explosives-packed vehicle near a crowded market and a mosque in the Urgun district of Paktika province. Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi, the Defense Ministry spokesman, says the military is providing helicopters and ambulances to transport the victims to the provincial capital, Sharan.

Azimi says 42 people were wounded in the explosion and some 20 shops were destroyed.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
