Vantablack Material Can Absorb 99.965% Of Light

vantablackThey say that the color black is pretty slimming because it helps to hide our curves. Well if you thought that your black shirt or black dress did a good job at making you look slim, you might be interested to learn that British scientists have created a new material that they are calling Vantablack.

The material is apparently so black and it absorbs 99.965% of light, thus eliminating any features of the objects that it coats, which you can see in the image above where it looks like there’s a black patch in the photo which is actually the Vantablack covering a portion of the aluminum foil. So apart from the obvious uses for stealth, what other purposes could Vantablack serve?

Well according to the scientists, it could be used to change the way sensitive imaging systems are made. This is because reflected light inside imaging devices like sensitive telescopes are apparently a major hurdle that needs to be overcome, so by introducing Vantablack, it could help make it easier to develop.

Apart from its absorption of light, the Vantablack material has thermal stability and can withstand vibrations, thus making it a candidate for constructing telescopes that are planned for a launch into space. Pretty cool, huh?

BlackBerry Passport Shown Off Next To Bold 9900, Looks Huge

blackberry passport bold 9900 1000x785 640x502When BlackBerry introduced the Passport, we’re sure many eyebrows were raised. It’s not that the handset is a bad phone, it’s just that its 1:1 display aspect ratio felt a little weird in a world full of rectangular displays with aspect ratios of 4:3 or 16:9. BlackBerry has since gone on to promote its display as being the ideal display for work and play.

Now thanks to a new photo that has surfaced, we can see above the BlackBerry Passport in comparison to the BlackBerry Bold 9900. The Bold 9900’s display isn’t that small by itself, but you can clearly see that the Passport dominates the Bold 9900 in terms of overall size and display size.

We guess based on this comparison, BlackBerry does have a good point when they claim that using the Passport to view documents and edit spreadsheets would be ideal since it does offer the user a lot of screen real estate. However it does look a little too big to be used one-handed, so we guess we’ll have to try it for ourselves to get a better idea.

In the meantime what do you guys think? Could BlackBerry truly be onto something with the BlackBerry Passport?

Unlocked Nokia Lumia 1020 Now Available From Microsoft Store

Nokia Lumia 1020 hands on review 1 640x424One of the upsides to signing a contract with a carrier is that you get to purchase a phone from them for cheap, or in some cases even free. However it also means that you would have to sign with the carrier for the next two-years, locking you down, so if you wanted to switch or get out of the contract, you’d have to pay a penalty.

However if you’d rather have the freedom, you can always purchase your phone outright and if you have been eyeing the Nokia Lumia 1020, you might be interested to learn that the handset is currently available for purchase via the Microsoft Store. The handset is unlocked and it will work with either AT&T or T-Mobile’s network. In fact it will also allow you to get access to LTE on T-Mobile’s network.

Other than that, the handset’s specs will remain the same as the first time it was launched, so users can look forward to a 4.5-inch HD display, 32GB of onboard storage, a whopping 41MP rear-facing camera, and will come with Windows Phone 8 preinstalled, although based on the listing, it is eligible for an update to Windows Phone 8.1. It is priced at $549.

According to the earlier rumors, word on the street is that the handset has been earmarked for end of life status either on the 14th of September or 15th of October. What this means is that after either of these dates, the phone will no longer be available for purchase, so if you were still on the fence, you will want to make your decision ASAP!

U.S. Deports Honduran Children In First Flight Since Obama's Pledge

(Adds quote from migration expert in Honduras)

By Gabriel Stargardter

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras, July 14 (Reuters) – The United States deported a group of Honduran children as young as 1-1/2 years old on Monday in the first flight since President Barack Obama pledged to speed up the process of sending back illegal immigrant minors from Central America.

Fleeing violence and poverty, record numbers of children from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have crossed into the United States over the past year, testing U.S. border facilities and sparking intense debate about how to solve the problem.

Monday’s charter flight from New Mexico to San Pedro Sula, the city with the highest murder rate in the world, returned 17 Honduran women, as well as 12 girls and nine boys, aged between 18 months and 15 years, the Honduran government said.

Looking happy, the deported children exited the airport on an overcast and sweltering afternoon. One by one, they filed into a bus, playing with balloons they had been given.

Nubia, a 6-year-old girl among the deportees, said she left Honduras a month ago for a journey that ended when she and her mother were caught on the Mexico-Texas border two weeks later.

“Horrible, cold and tiring,” was how Nubia remembered the trip that was meant to unite the pair with her three uncles already living in the United States.

Instead, her mother Dalia paid $7,000 in vain to a coyote, or guide, to smuggle them both across the border.

Once caught, U.S. officials treated them like “animals”, holding them in rooms with as many as 50 people, where some mothers had to sleep standing up holding children, Dalia said.

During the eight months ended June 15, some 52,000 children were detained at the U.S. border with Mexico, most of them from Central America. That was double the previous year’s tally and tens of thousands more are believed to have slipped through.

So chaotic are the circumstances of the exodus that some of the children are not even correctly reunited with their parents, said Valdette Willeman, director of the Center for Attention for Returned Migrants in Honduras.

“Many of the mothers are sometimes not even the real mothers of the children,” she said.

DRUG DEBATE

Monday’s flight departed as Obama faces increasing pressure to address the surge of unaccompanied minors.

Immigrant advocates urge him to address the humanitarian needs of the migrants. At the same time, Republicans in Congress have blamed the crisis on Obama’s immigration policies and have called on him to secure the border.

Obama’s administration has stressed that Central American children who cross the border illegally will be sent home, and last week said it would speed up the deportation process.

Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala have suffered from gang violence and incursions from Mexican drug cartels using the region as a staging post for their trafficking operations.

Honduran President Juan Hernandez, in an interview published on Monday, blamed U.S. drug policy for sparking violence and ramping up migration to the United States. His wife urged the United States to do more to help.

“The countries consuming drugs need to support (us) and take joint responsibility because if there wasn’t demand, there wouldn’t be production and we wouldn’t be living like we are,” Ana Garcia de Hernandez said as she awaited the children.

Obama’s administration has projected that without government action, more than 150,000 unaccompanied children under the age of 18 could flee the three Central American nations next year.

The proposed actions will test Obama’s ability to negotiate effectively with Republican lawmakers who have blocked much of his agenda ahead of a November election when they hope to capture the U.S. Senate from his Democratic Party. The Whole New Way to Make a Monte Cristo That Will Blow Your Mind

If you’ve ever had a Monte Cristo sandwich, you will devour this bread. Serve it with warm raspberry jam for dipping.

2014-07-15-montecristobread3.jpg

Growing up in North Carolina, there was only one diner. That’s right. One. Herby’s. I loved that joint. It had a purple life-sized half of a VW Beetle affixed right to the front of the building! Talk about character. It was the only restaurant open 24 hours and they only served breakfast.

Now I live in New Jersey and one thing that there’s an abundance of in my fine state are diners. If you aren’t familiar, let me just tell you there are a ton! And one thing about diners is that their menus vary only slightly from place to place.

Most times you can sit down and open your vast, glossy menu to reveal most of the same items regardless of which diner you’re eating in. I guess there’s something to be said for knowing what to expect from an eatery.

I don’t often eat at diners beyond our once monthly Sunday breakfast with my co-workers. I work as a paramedic and in my line of work, you don’t often get to sit down to eat, let alone eat all together. Sunday mornings seems to be the one day per week where our mornings don’t start off with a bang and we can enjoy a meal together, at an actual table instead of stuffing our faces as we run out the door for our next call.

2014-07-15-montecristobread.jpg

On those rare occasions when I find myself in a diner on a Sunday, I look through all those memorable diner items and my eyes almost always settle on a Monte Cristo Sandwich.

It’s a sandwich unlike any other. Ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese sandwiched in white bread, fried, and then dusted with powdered sugar. It’s like French toast hiding a ham, turkey and Swiss sandwich. Perfect for breakfast or lunch! I love dipping mine in raspberry jam for the perfect finishing touch.

In this Monte Cristo Pull Apart Bread, I’ve combined all those flavors into what may quite possibly be the world’s most addictive bread.

Fresh from the oven and still warm, I found myself unable to exercise any reasonable amount of self-control as I pulled layer upon warm cheesy layer from the loaf and dipped it into raspberry jam. It was just like eating a Monte Cristo sandwich in a tempting, pull-apart, melty, cheesy, oh so irresistible loaf of bread.

2014-07-15-montecristobread2.jpg

This Monte Cristo Bread recipe is one I know you’ll love. And just think of all the other fun combinations you could try! Pizza bread is next on my list.

If you’re looking for more cheesy, bread goodness, you’ve got to check out Kate’s Cheesy Beer Bread Recipe too. Or maybe Allison’s rustic bread recipe is more your speed. Either way, hooray for carbs!

Progressives turn from Obama to embrace Warren

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Populist Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) got a rock-star reception during a standing-room-only campaign rally here Monday, as hundreds of liberal activists cheered her broadsides against corporate interests and voiced hopes that her presence might shift the political winds in an increasingly Republican state.

Tripoli Airport Shelled In Libya, U.N. Pulls Staff

By Feras Bosalum and Ulf Laessing

TRIPOLI, Libya, July 15 (Reuters) – A militia shelled Tripoli airport, destroying 90 percent of planes parked there, a Libyan government spokesman said, as heavy fighting between armed groups prompted the United Nations to pull its staff out of the North African country.

At least 15 people have been killed in clashes in Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi since Sunday, and a Libyan official said several Grad rockets hit the Tripoli International Airport on Monday, damaging the control tower.

Government spokesman Ahmed Lamine said 90 percent of the planes parked at the airport were destroyed.

“The government has studied the possibility to bring international forces to enhance security,” he told reporters On Tuesday.

Three years after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, Libya has slipped deeper into chaos with its weak government and new army unable to control brigades of former rebel fighters and militias who often battle for political and economic power.

Two soldiers were killed and a number of planes were damaged when a militia shelled Tripoli airport on Monday, a Libyan soldier told Reuters.

“Several planes and cars belonging to citizens were hit,” said Abdel Rahman, a soldier in a unit protecting the airport. A hall used by customs controls had also been hit, he added.

Seven people were killed in Tripoli on Sunday in the worst fighting for six months in the capital, where rival militias have been fighting for control of the airport.

Security and medical sources said at least six people had been killed and 25 wounded in Benghazi in heavy fighting between security forces and rival militias since late Sunday.

The U.N. mission in Libya said the closure of Tripoli airport and the deteriorating security situation made it impossible for it to operate.

Tripoli residents said a Grad rocket struck the airport perimeter late on Monday. A Reuters reporter at the airport heard anti-aircraft guns and other heavy weapons.

In Benghazi, irregular forces loyal to renegade former general Khalifa Haftar bombarded Islamist militia bases as part of his campaign to oust militants. Special forces clashed with militia fighters in the city.

Most of the dead and wounded were civilians, according to security and medical sources at Benghazi hospital. At least 10 houses were hit with missiles, and government offices and banks were forced to close.

Misrata city airport was also closed on Monday, and Benghazi airport has been closed since May. That leaves only two small airports in the south and a land route to Tunisia as the country’s only gateways to the outside world, a flashback to the 1990s when Libya was under U.N. sanctions.

Western powers fear chaos in Libya will allow arms and militants to flow across its borders. The south of the vast desert country has become a haven for Islamist militants kicked out of Mali by French forces earlier this year. Roberts's Incremental Approach Frustrates Supreme Court Allies

All of this called to mind a 2010 article in The Georgetown Law Journal in which Barry Friedman, a law professor at New York University, examined the Roberts court’s propensity for “stealth overruling.”

Mr. Smith said there was a method to Chief Justice Roberts’s quiet and incremental approach.

Korean Coed Street Fashion at Ewha Woman's University!

This is the second installment in a series introducing key fashion neighborhoods in Seoul, Korea, which has become quite a fashion hub and a hotbed of street fashion, although you may not have heard  this yet. It’s my goal to familiarize Western readers  with the fact that parts of Seoul are now hotter than Harajuku in terms of fashion creativity and dynamicism, even if it lacks the Cosplay flash. But that’s what makes the street fashion in Seoul all the more real and interesting. These are the fashions of everyday Koreans and those who follow them sartorially, and these are streets worth watching.
After one of the student interns bravely grab her and combine her to pose, turns out she was with one of the many Chinese tourists who are legion at the Ewha front gate, which is apparently a major tourist destination for the Chinese who come to Korea, an

Ewha Woman’s University is one of the oldest universities in Seoul, founded as many were by American Protestant missionaries, and considered to be one of the top universities a woman can attend in general, right behind what Koreans call the “SKY” universities, which is short for Seoul National, Korea, and Yonsei Universities. Doesn’t fit into the acronym, but it’s up there bumping shoulders of those universities in terms of quality and reputation. Now, despite being a women’s University, one has to remember that Korea is still defined by the gender norms of America in the 1960s. Boys are boys and girls are girls, especially at a women’s University, with the social norm being to wear heels and a dress, full-on makeup, and have every hair on the head in perfect place. Ewha Woman’s University is infamous for what’s students only half-jokingly called the “9 a.m. morning fashion show” in which the front gate is stormed by freshly dressed and fashionable women rushing to their first class of the day amidst a cacophony of click-clacking high heels. This is not to say that every woman in Korean college dresses this way, but I think it would be safe for the non-initiated to completely eliminate any idea of the American-style undergraduate rolling out of bed and into class in one’s pajamas and slippers or without at least a long session spent in front of the makeup mirror.

I started out shooting a bit of Ewha Women’s University front gate for this story, with three student interns in tow, when a lady with the best Korean-style sports jersey dress ever pops into view. This is one of the most popular styles on the Korean streets this summer and it was apropos that she appeared on the scene just as we arrived, so I had to snap a surreptitious shot of her outfit just in case she decided not to pose for camera willingly.

After one of the student interns bravely grabbed her and got her to pose, it turned out she wasone of the many Chinese tourists who are legion at the Ewha front gate these days, which is apparently a major tourist destination for the Chinese who come to Korea, which made sense since we spotted entire tour groups led by guides with flags right in the area we started shooting.  This young lady turned out to be a confident  street fashion model possessed of a Mona Lisa smile. Turns out she’s an exchange student studying somewhere and Seoul and bought her sports jersey dress in Korea.

Her and her companion were quite the couple and comfortable with the camera. We were actually pretty wise to arrive on campus around noon time, since we are able to find several real students to shoot in their natural environment actually going and coming from class. The Idae area (as it is known to Koreans by its Korean abbreviation of “Ewha” and University” (ewha+dae-hak-kyo=”idae”) is renowned for its young female fashion, but this is often a misleading place for street fashion photographers to shoot since is a major watering hole for women wanting to be fashionable, whether their students are not. So after school hours or on the weekends, most of the women in the area are not representative of young Korean female student fashion. We made sure to be on the spot during the prime hours for actually catching students attending the campus.

Her and her companion were quite the couple and comfortable with the camera.

We immediately spotted some girls in a coffee shop we went to have a quick meeting and noticed the “West Coast” sports jerseys and were debating whether not to approach them for picture when I noticed that they were wearing matching jerseys T-shirts and that’s cinched it. We had to get them. Find and it turned out they were also Chinese tourists who had just bought T-shirts in Dongdaemun, which they let us know through Google translate, and were eager to show us the very store where they had just seen these shirts earlier and were eagerly pointing it out as I was taking the pictures. They actually wanted to walk us over and show us the shirts on the rack. However, we didn’t have time.

It seemed like we were mostly catching Chinese tourists, and we were hoping to get more actual students from the University. Since it was lunchtime, we decided that moving in toward the center of campus would yield more Korean students actually attending the university, who would be walking out of classes toward the surrounding area. However, given the fact that most of the Chinese tourists and exchange students we were catching seemed to be very big fans of Korean fashion and were actually better models for current trends than even the Koreans were, this turned out to be a good thing. All of the young Chinese women we caught on film were eager to tell us where they had bought their clothes — and the new Dongdaemun Design Plaza seemed to be a major stop on the fashion train for all of them.

We came across something pretty rare these days on the Korean university: an actual demonstration! Well, actually it was more of a quasi-demonstration, a sort of information session designed to get people to sign a petition. I was actually more interested in her hair and her T-shirt then the actual content of the petition drive, and it seemed very much along the lines of something students do. Ewha fashion!

Upon asking this young lady whether or not I could use her picture for the purposes of a street fashion piece, she said that she preferred to not use the picture with her posing without the sign. However, in all honesty, I was more interested in her cool hair color and her T-shirt. But we wish her luck with her cause and in getting more money to janitorial workers in her University, which is I think one of the goals that I heard being mentioned.

More toward the interior of the campus, we are bumping into more everyday students doing everyday things, such as carrying their cups of iced coffee. This young lady is wearing one of the most popular skirts in Korea this summer season and we had to ask her to pose.

No matter how far we got into the campus, tourists were still legion. These two young ladies were walking through campus and more than happy to have their pictures taken by a street fashion photography crew.If anything, the many tourists both in front of and actually on campus were testament to the power of the so-called “Korean wave” in Asia. Korea, at the very least in Asia, has definitely become a place known for being modern, fashionable, and very cool.

The matter how far we got into the campus, Chinese tourists were still legion. These two young ladies were walking through campus and more than happy to have their pictures taken by a street fashion photography crew.

We were now bumping into more Korean students coming out of or going into classes, and we caught this young fashionista on the way into campus, and she was easy and relaxed in front of the camera, a natural model.

She’s a natural model, like many Korean girls who were trained on a diet of sticker pictures, private photo booths, and cell phone cams. South Korea coined its own word for “selfie” back in around 2004. Young Korean girls our well-trained in the fine art of “selca” (SELf+CAmera) and were uploading their super selfie portraits to eoljjang (best face) sites that became popular around that time as well. The average female Korean college student has about as much de facto amateur modeling experience as the average Western amateur model who has seen the inside of a photo studio.

She's a natural.

We were lucky to meet someone do awesome. Badumbump.

Cool shot of the impromptu Ewha model of the day!

We ended our little foray into the Ewha Woman’s University with a bit more conservative, representative fare for the Koreans students these days. And her heavily-ornamented gladiator sandals are definitely the thing with the kids these days.

That's the way you end a street fashion photo foray!

As soon as the day ended and I was sitting in my office, as if on cue, our “awesome” model from a few hours earlier sent me a message about her pictures and we quickly decided that it would be cool to do an impromptu studio session since I had my studio equipment sitting in a box in my office ready to go and all you would need to do is find a white wall in a hallway somewhere. Considering what we had to work with, but also the find the picture we came up with but also surprising. but also, considering the natural talent and these which our model possessed, it’s not really any surprise we got what we did. Definitely one of the best street fashion models I’ve ever bump into — and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that she is a true-blue Ewha student.

Our best model wanted to do a bit of studio after her great street shoot. She is indeed awesome.

P.S.  Many thanks to my Seoul Fashion Report interns Charlotte Gryson, Yubin Lee, and Junha Kim, without whom I would have had a lot of trouble shooting for this story.

Men in Big Wigs

2014-07-14-DSC_16451.jpg
Seth Tucker, Marty Thomas, Alex Ringler, Curtis Wiley, Nic Cory, and Nick Cearley in Pageant, photo by Jenny Anderson

Pageant — the 1991 off-Broadway hit about a beauty contest, with the six contestants played by male actors in dresses and wigs — was a clever, rowdy, dazzlingly funny and quirky musical. In revival 23 years later, Pageant is quirky and intermittently funny; the rest of the allure has gone the way of vanishing cream.

Mostly, Pageant back then was unexpected. And original, at least to mainstream audiences. Three years after Pageant came the international success of the Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla, The Queen of the Desert, which humanized its somewhat similar characters, and compared to which Pageant is merely a sketchy spoof. In 2014, you’ve got Kinky Boots a few doors down from the tiny (and rickety) Davenport Theatre; you get more dazzle by simply walking past the houseboards at the Hirschfeld, on your way down the block, than you do at this revival.

Pageant recreates, before our very eyes, the 2014 Miss Glamouresse contest (and yes, the characters and content seem deeply rooted in 1990). Glamouresse is a manufacturer of dubious beauty products, like flavored lip-snack in oversized tubes that look like — well, they don’t exactly leave these things to the imagination. The evening is laid out simply: each “girl” is introduced, each offers her “talent,” each does a raunchy Glamouresse commercial. There are also dress parades of gowns and bathing suits. If this sounds like the sort of thing dancers languishing on a long touring show might come up with in the wee hours to alleviate boredom, it is; Robert Longbottom, who conceived Pageant and served as director/choreographer of the original production, devised the thing while he was touring with 42nd Street and enlisted composer Albert Evans and lyricist/librettists Bill Russell and Frank Kelly to write it.

Longbottom’s staging was perhaps the secret of the show’s success. He was eventually given his shot at a big Broadway musical, the 1997 Side Show (written by the same Mr. Russell with Dreamgirls composer Henry Kreiger, and recently enjoying a successful revisal at the Kennedy Center). Pageant — without Longbottom, directed by Matt Lenz and choreographed by Shea Sullivan — is a pale affair. Whether this is due to Longbottom’s absence, or the passing of time, or simply the dusty material itself, is impossible to say. But the bloom is off the beauty rose, if you will, and the show is mostly a faded also-ran.

What this Pageant does have is three canny performances which get us through the eighty-five minutes with intermittent spells of enjoyment. Mixed in with what might be considered obvious men-in-big-wigs performances are two very much nonobvious, droll performances. Nick Cearley (of The Skivvies) plays Miss Great Plains — Bonnie Jean Cutlet — with an air of bemusement that makes him stand out. His dramatic recitation, an ecological plea called “I Am the Land” which brings to mind that 1970s anti-pollution TV commercial featuring a crying Indian, pretty much wipes out the other contestants. (At the preview I attended, he was named Miss Glamouresse even though the votes of the audience member-judges favored one of the men-in-big-wigs.)

He is evenly matched by Seth Tucker, who gives a glazed and dazed performance as Miss West Coast. His special material is one of those “Seven Ages of Man” affairs, in which he emerges from the womb in a wild tie-dye outfit. Cearley and Tucker are performing material written by the same authors and staged by the same director as the other actors, yes; but their performances are on a considerably higher level.

Best of all is John Bolton as Frankie Cavalier, the fourth-rate master of ceremonies. Bolton–who recently emerged from a long career as a comic character man with the leading role in A Christmas Story — has a lopsided smile, too many teeth, and a frozen enthusiasm; this might only be Miss Glamouresse, but he plays it like he is serenading Miss America. Yes, we’ve seen this sort of performance in this sort of role many times before, but Bolton seems to be convinced that he is the real thing–and he convinces us. (He is also the only person I’ve ever heard pronounce “cav-al-cay-ay-ay-ay-ayde” in seven syllables.) Bolton was rushed into the cast late in previews — he started on a Sunday and played to the critics on Monday! — but one can easily understand why the producers made the change. One can only imagine what this beauty Pageant would look like without Mr. Bolton.

.

Pageant, with music by Albert Evans and book & lyrics by Bill Russell and Frank Kelly, opened July 14, 2014 at the Davenport Theatre
