Dell Chromebook 11 Sales Halted Due To Overwhelming Demand

dell chromebook 11 640x402While Dell is a company that is well-known for their Windows-based PCs, it seems that they are doing pretty well on the Chromebook front as well. According to reports, Dell had to temporarily put a halt to the sale of one of their Chromebooks simply because they are unable to meet the demand from their customers.

The Dell Chromebook 11 was introduced last year and began shipping in December and it is currently listed as unavailable on Dell’s website. Instead, Dell is pointing customers to their hotline if they are interested in placing an order. A Dell representative confirmed the halting of the sales via a statement to PC World.

According to Ellen Murphy, a spokeswoman for Dell, “Due to strong demand, the Dell Chromebook 11 is currently not available for order on Dell.com. It continues to be available for our education customers and can be ordered through their sales representative.”

It is unclear as to when Dell will be putting the Chromebook 11 back up for sale via its website, but it does not look like it will be happening anytime soon. Perhaps Dell has to figure out how to get more units to meet the demand first before they feel confident at selling it to the masses once again. It’s an interesting move to take it offline, but what do you guys think?

Cortana For Windows Threshold Could Reside In The Taskbar [Rumor]

windows phone 81 cortana 03 640x359We have heard the rumors that Microsoft could be thinking about bringing Cortana onto Windows-based devices and the Xbox platform. In fact we’ve even seen job listings that hints at the possibility. Even as a rumor it does not seem overly ridiculous since it would no doubt be a boon to Windows tablet users who will be able to use Cortana to perform searches and to interact with their devices.

Now according to the folks at Neowin, they have learnt that Cortana will indeed be making its way onto Windows Threshold (which is a possible name/codename for Windows 9), and that the voice assistant feature will be reportedly residing in the taskbar. Now why the taskbar, you ask? Isn’t it kind of a static place for icons to be at?

Well that would be the old Windows taskbar, but Neowin claims that Microsoft will be revamping the taskbar to make it more functional. In fact one of their sources has described the revamp as “mini Live Tiles” which sounds pretty intriguing and promising. Given that Cortana is also part of the Live Tile interface on Windows Phone, it sounds like it could be a perfect fit.

Its location would also make it easy for users to launch the voice assistant feature, as opposed to having to search for it in your programs which would ultimately defeat the purpose of a feature designed for convenience. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but as Neowin points out, given that Windows Threshold is still in the works, there is a chance that things could change from now until its release.

Nokia Lumia 1020 End Of Life Status Pegged For 15th October Instead [Rumor]

nokia lumia 1020 review 1 640x424According to a rumor we heard yesterday, word had it that the Nokia Lumia 1020 had been pegged for an end of life status on the 14th of September. However according to a recent report from Windows Phone Central, they have learnt from their sources that the end of life date is actually the 15th of October. We’re not sure if Microsoft had decided to push back the date or if the original rumor was wrong to begin with.

For those who are unclear about end of life status, this basically means that Microsoft will no longer be officially selling the device from their stores or websites. There will probably be handful of units left at third-party retailers and online via eBay and Craigslist, but if you wanted to get it through an official channel, you would be out of luck once the device has reached its end of life status.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 was launched in 2013 we so guess it is about time that Microsoft introduces a newer version, although interestingly enough we haven’t really heard any rumors about a possible successor, but there are talks about a Nokia McLaren that might be it. The end of life status does not mean that Microsoft will stop supporting the device.

That is expected to continue for a while, although to what extent remains to be seen. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears peeled for more information regarding the end of life status as well as the possibility of a successor, so check back with us at a later date for the details.

Microsoft’s COO Reveals That Their Device Market Share Is At 14%

screenshot 35 600x334When it comes to software like Windows or Office, it is safe to say that Microsoft probably holds a majority market share. In fact last we checked, Microsoft’s share of the PC market was still around the 90% mark, but in terms of actual software released across all sorts of devices, Microsoft admits that they could do better.

Speaking at the Worldwide Partner Conference in Washington, D.C., Microsoft’s COO, Kevin Turner, revealed that Microsoft’s market share in terms of devices currently sits at a lowly 14%, nowhere near their dominance when it comes to the PC market. “The reality is the world’s shifted, the world’s evolved. We now measure ourselves by total device space. We have a much bigger opportunity than we’ve ever had in the past to grow our business, but we have to rethink how we look at our business.”

He then stated that this was a positive thing as it allows Microsoft to challenge themselves and be more open about releasing software onto non-Windows based devices, like for the iPad and even Android. Earlier this year we saw Microsoft release a touch version of Office for the iPad, and word has it that Microsoft is working on a version of Office for Android tablets that could see a release ahead of the Windows version.

Naturally Microsoft’s focus would still be on Windows but at the same time it is good to know that Microsoft will not be playing exclusive with their software, so here’s hoping that Microsoft’s device market share will see an increase in the future.

Microsoft Reportedly Working On Wearable Tech For The Blind

microsoft logoWhile most tech companies are focusing on developing wearables for the average consumer like you and me, there is a market for the disabled that most companies either seem to neglect or aren’t putting too much emphasis on. Well it looks like Microsoft has discovered that it is a relatively untapped market because according to reports, Microsoft is working on a wearable device aimed at the blind/visually impaired.

According to the Sunday Times, the device is currently being tested by a small group of eight blind people in Reading in the UK. While Microsoft has not dived into details regarding this particular wearable, one of the ways it works is by identifying objects around the wearer and then relay that information back to them via an earpiece.

This will allow blind people to “see” what’s around them, so it could describe something they’re about to eat, a building, an object, and can even help them navigate their way around so that that they don’t bump into any objects or other people. According to Cities Unlocked, a joint initiative between Microsoft, Guide Dogs and the Future Cities Catapult, “We look forward to sharing more details of the project later this year.”

The BBC also claims to have learnt that this particular wearable is not seen by Microsoft as a potential competitor to Google’s own wearables effort, Google Glass, which we guess makes sense as they both have been designed for different use.
