ICQ Instant Messenger Sees An Increase In Users For The First Time

icq 640x550We’re not sure how many of you guys remember, but back in the day, there was an instant messaging program by the name of ICQ. The messenger granted users identification numbers in which they could use to identify themselves and search for other users, and it made that distinct “uh-oh!” sound when a message was received.

Now in case you didn’t know, ICQ is still alive and well as it was bought over by Russian billionaire, Alisher Usamanov who owns Mail.ru Group back in 2010. You’re probably wondering, why would anyone buy an outdated messenger app? Well apparently there was still a demand for the service over in Russia, and it seems that according to a recent report from Bloomberg, usage of ICQ has actually seen an increase.

This is the first time the app has seen a usage increase since it was bought over. Back in 2010 at the time of its sale, it had about 42 million active users, but that number quickly dropped to 11 million in 2013. However recently Mail.ru has seen a rise in 1 million users in a matter of a week, most of them from Brazil.

The number of users who downloaded the app allowed it to shoot up the charts of the iTunes App Store in Brazil, Uruguay, and is amongst the top five apps in Argentina. Given that the app is still relatively unknown, at least amongst giants such as WhatsApp, Skype, and Viber, we wonder if there is room to grow, or perhaps we could all be pleasantly surprised if it were to turn out to be the next WeChat. What do you guys think?

Amazon Prime Customers Can Claim $1 Instant Video Credit For No-Rush Shipping

amazon instant videoMost of the time when we ordered something online, we can’t wait to receive it in the mail. It’s almost like you’re getting a present and you just keep checking the shipment page to see its status. However there are some orders which we aren’t too fussed about and as long as it arrives in a timely manner, we don’t really care.

Now if you’re the sort that isn’t too fussed about how long it takes for their shipment to arrive, you might be interested to learn that Amazon is giving its Amazon Prime subscribers $1 in Amazon Instant Video credit if they were to choose the No-Rush shipping option, as you can see in the screenshot above.

This option will only be available to Amazon Prime customers and it basically credits $1 towards your Instant Video. However it should be noted that according to the site’s terms and conditions that this is a limited time offer and not every video under Amazon’s Instant Video is covered, such as HBO titles for example.

However like we said earlier, if you’re the type that doesn’t really need their order rushed to them in the next day, perhaps the $1 credit could be a nice bonus to have, especially if you’re an avid watcher of Amazon’s Instant Videos.

Tor Claims Network Was Breached, University Researchers Suspected

tor logo 640x386For those unfamiliar with Tor, it is basically a service in which Internet users can use to cloak themselves in a shroud of anonymity. While it does sound shady (and rightfully so, given that many of Silk Road’s users were using Tor), it does have more noble purposes, such as protecting the identities of journalists/reporters who need to find out information without giving away their identity.

That being said, it seems that even Tor is not safe from hackers, according to a recent report in which Tor claims that earlier this year, outsiders had breached its network in an attempt to learn the identities of some of its users. Some believe that this attack could have been conducted by researchers at the Carnegie-Mellon University.

The university had originally planned to demonstrate a Tor hack at a conference next week, which has since been cancelled. However according to a spokesman for the university, they claim that they don’t have anything to add, and the researchers could not be reached for comment either.

According to a post by Tor, they claim that some users have been affected during the first half of the year, thanks to the hack. “Unfortunately, it’s still unclear what ‘affected’ includes. While we don’t know when they started doing the attack, users who operated or accessed hidden services from early February through July 4 should assume they were affected.”

BlackBerry Strong Is A Slider Concept Of The Passport

blackberry strongIn terms of smartphone designs, the BlackBerry Passport is an odd one. We won’t know how well it handles until we actually try it for ourselves, but for now, the 1:1 aspect ratio is a little weird. BlackBerry claims that the screen size will allow more contents to be displayed, and based on previous comparisons, we’re inclined to agree.

That being said, if BlackBerry were to design a slider version of the BlackBerry Passport, is that something you might be interested in? Well a recent concept has surfaced for a device called the BlackBerry Strong, which is essentially the slider version of the BlackBerry Passport. We should point out that this is a fan-based concept, so if you were thinking that it was real, think again!

blackberry strong 2We have to admit that we’re a little intrigued by the concept. Without the keyboard sticking out, the BlackBerry Strong reminds us of a stack of Post-it notes, meaning that combined with a stylus, the BlackBerry Strong could do well as a note taking device. It would also fit a lot better into pants and bags, but other than that we can’t really see any real advantages to it being a slider.

What do you guys think? Do you like the concept of a BlackBerry Passport with a slide out QWERTY keyboard, or do you think that the BlackBerry Passport is perfect the way it is at the moment?

iPhone 6 Release Rumored For 14th October

apple logoAssuming the rumors are correct, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 6 in September, but what about its release? When will that be? Well according to the folks at MacRumors, they claim to have been tipped off by a source who has revealed that the iPhone 6 is expected to see a release on Tuesday, the 14th of October.

What this means is that Apple could be announcing the iPhone 6 towards the end of September. Usually with iPhone releases, Apple takes about a couple of weeks after its announcement before it releases the product, so based on this information, late or early October will most likely be the announcement, although their sources claim September 16, almost a month ahead of its release.

Of course all of this is just speculation for now, so do take it with a grain of salt. At the same time, previous rumors have suggested that Apple could be using October to announce the iWatch, release OS X 10.10 Yosemite, reveal new iPads, as well as new Macs. All of this remains to be seen, but if it is true, then Apple’s announcement in October will be a pretty big one.

In fact, MacRumors’ sources claim that that the 14th of October is said to be an “immense” day for Apple, claiming that the whole month could be a very busy month for the Cupertino company. It is unclear if the announcement will include the 5.5-inch iPhone 6. There have been reports that production of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 has been delayed and might only see a release in December alongside the iWatch, but what say you?
