It's so satisfying to see a beautiful hat get made by hand

It’s extremely peaceful to watch someone focus in and make something with their bare hands. The process is always beautiful, taking materials such as the beaver felt fabric and molding it into something usable, like a hat. It’s almost like seeing art.

Apple To Begin In-Store iPhone 5s Screen Replacements This Monday

iphone 5s review 007 640x426Sending in your phone for repair can be troublesome. This is because you don’t necessarily know how long it will take, and sometimes it can be pretty expensive too. Plus you can’t be sure if it won’t break again. Well for iPhone 5s owners, you might be pleased to learn that come 4th of August, Apple will soon start to offer in-store display replacements for your device.

Previously Apple had begun piloting the service at several of its stores, but according to 9to5Mac, they claim that the program will be kicking off in earnest this coming Monday. So why is this a good thing? Well having it repaired in-store will most likely have customers get their phones back within the day.

They also know that whoever is repairing it is a qualified technician, at least by Apple’s standards. The price to replace a damaged iPhone 5s display is said to be priced at $150 which is admittedly pretty expensive, but compared to paying $269 for a replacement unit, it seems a bit more affordable.

While this is great for customers, it is also good for Apple. Tim Cook has revealed in the past that by taking their repairs in-store, it could help Apple save a lot of money. As it stands, Apple Stores are currently accepting iPhone 5c handsets for screen repairs, but for iPhone 5s owners, your turn comes this Monday, hopefully.

Microsoft Updates Office For iPad

Presenter View in PowerPoint for iPad 640x480Whenever a software is first released, naturally there will be some griping about how come there isn’t this feature, or why is this feature not working, and so on. Well Microsoft’s Office for iPad was faced with those comments at the start, such as the lack of a print function which was soon addressed.

That being said, Microsoft has since issued a new update for Office for iPad that will hopefully appease users and help make the app more appealing to those who are still looking for alternatives. Starting with PowerPoint, Microsoft has introduced a Presenter View where presenters will be able see their notes and see which slides are coming up next.

Sorting a column in a PivotTable in Excel for iPad 640x480They have also made it so that users can insert videos and photos from their Camera Roll directly into the app itself. They have also added new eraser and pen settings to make better annotations, and also easier editing of hyperlinks. As for Excel, Microsoft introduced PivotTables with the latest update to the app.

Users will be able to sort, filter, expand, and collapse cells, show data, and also change the look and feel of their tables. In fact Microsoft has also added some keyboard shortcuts that Excel users might be familiar with, such as the F2/CTRL+U keyboard shortcut that lets you switch between modes.

Export to PDF in Word for iPad 640x480Microsoft has also added the Export to PDF functionality. According to Microsoft, this feature will be open to anyone who uses the app, regardless of whether they have an active Office 365 subscription or not. So if these are changes that sounds like it could make Office for iPad more functional, the update should be available for download so hit up the iTunes App Store to check it out!

Analyst Cuts iWatch Shipping Estimates Down To 3 Million

iwatch 640x360According to a report from yesterday, it was suggested that Apple could only begin shipping the iWatch this December. This is apparently due to production issues that apparently caused the delay and potentially limited quantity as well. This has recently been “confirmed” by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who estimates that Apple will most likely ship 3 million iWatch units by the end of this year.

This is compared to his earlier estimation where he estimated between 5-10 million iWatch shipments by the end of 2014, so safe to say that his new estimation is a sign that supply of the iWatch could be severely constrained. Kuo also seems to believe that Apple will be turning to the use of sapphire for the iWatch covers.

This goes against previous rumors which has suggested otherwise. However according to Kuo, production issues with sapphire could force Apple to turn to the use of glass for half of the iWatch shipments. Given that glass and sapphire are different in terms of their durability, it does seem a little unfair for customers to pay the same price, but then again this is just a rumor and we won’t know for sure.

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but last we heard, Apple could be planning to announce the iWatch in the next couple of months, possibly in October, but do check back with us in the coming weeks and months for the details!

Fly Releases Era Windows Phone Device On The Cheap In Russia

russia eraWhen it comes to Windows Phone-powered smartphones, most of us would think about the numerous devices from Nokia and their Lumia range, while HTC is rumored to come on board with the HTC One (M8) for Windows Phone. Having said that, Russian OEM Fly intends to join in on the Windows Phone fun with the Era smartphone.

The Era smartphone from Fly is definitely affordable – we are talking about a $112 price point, which is the figure after conversion from 3,990 Rubles. This will be an entry level smartphone that looks set to go up against the hugely popular Lumia 5XX series of smartphones from Nokia.

As for the kind of hardware specifications that the Fly Era packs, we are looking at a rudimentary 4” WVGA IPS display, running on a quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 processor, an Adreno 302 GPU, 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded thanks to a microSD memory card slot. There is also a front-facing camera on the Era which gives it an edge over the Nokia Lumia 530. All in all, a 1,500mAh battery would keep the Fly Era chugging along throughout the day.

Since it costs so cheap, you can forget about a milled aluminum body here, as all you will find would be a smartphone encased in plastic, measuring 125.5mm x 65mm x 10.7mm.

Windows Phone’s Browser Masquerades As Safari To Deliver Mobile Optimized Websites

twitter before afterWhen a user browses a website on their browser, the browser of that platform will tell the server what kind of browser they are so that the server will know whether or not to deliver a website for mobile or a website for desktop. There are plenty of mobile-optimized websites these days, although it seems that many of them are giving Internet Explorer for Windows Phone a hard time.

What this means is that sometimes websites don’t render correctly or properly on Windows Phone, leading to a less than ideal browsing experience. According to recent reports, this has essentially forced Microsoft to make their Windows Phone user-agent identifier as Apple’s iPhone Safari browser.

Given that iOS and Android are currently the dominating smartphone platforms, we guess most web designers focus more on those platforms rather than those running on Windows Phone. In any case this means that Windows Phone users should be able to expect more mobile-friendly websites being delivered on their phones.

Now presumably this is not a long-term solution for Microsoft. After all we’re sure that it is also a matter of pride. We’re not sure what Microsoft can do to address this, but for now it looks like they will have to rely on faking being Safari.

Apple Confirms Impending Job Cuts At Beats

nyc2011 dre jimmy photo kevin mazur 640x425According to a report from yesterday, it was said that Apple was looking to cut as many as 200 jobs from Beats once the deal closes, which is expected to take place on the 1st of August. This is hardly a surprising move since companies tend to cut jobs once they acquire another company, unless they are planning on allowing that company run as a separate entity.

Well Apple has since confirmed that they will be letting some employees from Beats go. According to Apple spokesman, Tom Neumayr, “We’re excited to have the Beats team join Apple, and we have extended job offers to every Beats employee. Because of some overlap in our operations, some offers are for a limited period and we’ll work hard during this time to find as many of these Beats employees as we can another permanent job within Apple.”

However he did not mention as to how many jobs were being cut, but like we mentioned earlier, the rumors are claiming it will be about 200 positions. This is a pretty significant cut because as it stands, Beats has about 700 employees, so by axing 200 of them, almost a third of Beats’ workforce will be gone.

Unsurprisingly most of Beats’ executives will remain. Last we heard, both Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will be joining Apple, along with Beats Music heads Ian Rogers and Luke Wood. Nine Inch Nails frontman, Trent Reznor, is also expected to keep his job as the chief creative officer. It is still unclear as to what Apple has planned for Beats, but we guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

T-Mobile Added 1.5m Subscribers Last Quarter, Crosses The 50m Mark

john legereT-Mobile has definitely been making waves in the past year or so, announcing new plans and new programs, one of which saw the carrier willing to pay for a customer’s early termination fee as long as it meant that they would be leaving their carrier for T-Mobile. This is why it is hardly surprising that T-Mobile has crossed the 50 million subscriber mark.

The company had recently posted its financials for the second quarter of the year. According to the numbers, the carrier had managed to add 1.5 million subscribers, making it T-Mobile’s fifth consecutive period in which they added more than 1 million net subscribers. In fact they also managed to beat out AT&T and Verizon who added 1 million and 1.4 million subscribers respectively. Sprint on the other hand actually saw a loss of 245,000 subscribers.

According to T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere, “We have completely reversed T-Mobile’s trajectory and started a revolution that is changing the rules in wireless.” About a fifth of those subscriptions, 329,000 to be specific, also came in the form of tablets which according to T-Mobile is an increase of five-fold from the previous quarter.

The carrier also managed to sell 6.2 million smartphones during the quarter, but when asked if Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6 will have a huge impact on the carrier’s subscriber growth, Legere joking replied, “You’re not gonna get me to use the iPhone 6 word on this call.”
