Apple Beats Others In Delivery Efficiency

apple stellaStellaService, a customer service analytics company, has revealed in a new report that places Apple tops among companies that offer online delivery services – in terms of speed, that is. This is a huge jump from Apple’s eighth-place ranking just earlier this year in April. Apart from that, this also marks the very first time that Apple occupied the top spot as their June performance with an average processing-and-delivery time of just 2.3 days.

2.3 days on average would mean it is better than majority of the other online clothing stores including the likes of Abercrombie, Zappos, and Nike among others. There is also a separate study that did rank a wide range of aspects concerning customer service, and Apple came out tops as well, according to J. Crew and Mr Porter.

You can say that Apple is a thorn among the roses, being the lone tech company when it comes to fast deliveries, while all of its other rivals come in the form of fashion retail sites. Apart from Apple, the companies behind it were American Eagle Outfitters, Cap, UnderArmour and H&M. Apple even saw its position increase to third from seventh in April in an overall customer satisfaction survey, now how about that?

Twitter Acquires Madbits

Have you ever heard about Madbits before? If you haven’t, chances are you will hear more about this particular company in the days to come, since this startup that was founded by Clément Farabet and Louis-Alexandre Etezad-Heydari will be acquired by Twitter. Madbits’ main focus was on enabling computers in such a manner that they could learn via the implementation of artificial intelligence, where to be more specific, we are talking about “deep learning”.

”Deep learning” is still being readied for a public launch at point of the Twitter acquisition, and we are not privy to the relevant nitty gritty since details concerning the deal has yet to be revealed by either Twitter or Madbits.

Madbits, however, did mention that during the course of its development, it actually crossed paths with Twitter in a collaborative effort, as both companies shared a similar ambition as well as vision, and Madbits has faith that this acquisition by Twitter would leverage the social media company’s ability to scale such technology.

Madbits shared, “Over this past year, we’ve built visual intelligence technology that automatically understands, organizes and extracts relevant information from raw media. Understanding the content of an image, whether or not there are tags associated with that image, is a complex challenge. We developed our technology based on ‘deep learning,’ an approach to statistical machine learning that involves stacking simple projections to form powerful hierarchical models of a signal.”

This is not the first Twitter acquisition, and neither will it be the last.

New World Record In Data Transfer Achieved

record data transferWhen it comes to data transfer, you can be sure that there will always be a need for speed. In fact, researchers and scientists continue in their quest to roll out ways where data can be transferred faster than ever before, and we have seen the baton change hands before where networking speeds and wireless data transfer is concerned. Denmark’s researchers in DTU Photonics’ High-Speed Optical Communications Group (HSOC) have managed to achieve a brand new world record when it comes to single-transmitter data transfer, making me mull over the possibility of moving to this Scandinavian country.

How was this new world record achieved? Well, it required the use of a new kind of optical fiber, where the team is then able to hit their target transfer speeds of 43 terabits per second (!). Just in case you were wondering how much data is transferred at 43 terabits per second, we are talking about at least five 1TB hard drives that are chock full of data being transferred from place to another in a matter of under one second, tops.

That’s crazy fast no matter how you look at it, and this was done using but a single laser transmitter. There is no doubt that faster speeds have been achieved in the past with the use of lasers that measure in the hundreds of times over. [Press Release]

5 Ways To Meet People While Traveling

2014-07-31-TravelBreakPhotobyMattyTeagueTheRoadTripAbroadCheckList.jpg

A TRAVELBREAK original post by Stephanie Be.

Along with solo travel, traveling with a friend or two, maybe even as a group… the best part of traveling isn’t always the where, but the who.

You’ve gotta meet new people.

Here’s what’s worked for me:

1. Carry a deck of cards.
“Hey, have you ever played King’s Cup?”

I’m serious. There’s nothing like getting a group of people together and suggesting a drinking game or non-alcoholic card game (I like the game “Bullsh*t too).

You can teach them a game from your country, and they can teach you a game from theirs. Before you know it, the ice is broken and everyone is laughing.

From back-packer bars in Rio, to trains in Eastern Europe, to organizing Aussie road trips for people who don’t know each other; this has been my #1 conversation starter.

2. Everyone loves food, so why not love food together…
“Hey what are you doing for dinner tonight? I’m getting a group together to split groceries and cook together. Throw in some brews, are you interested?”

This works in hostels, with locals, and even if you all want to eat out before going out. It’s nice to chat with people and get a taste of who they are before going straight out to experience a night on the town.

3. Ask for directions or suggestions on what to do/see. Even better: ask someone to take a picture of you!
“Hey what’s the best place to get some good pictures around here?” or “Where do all the locals go on a Saturday night?” “Can you suggest a scenic place for a jog?” “Do you mind taking a picture? I don’t want to a take a selfie!”

If you’re situated around public transport, around locals in a social setting, or even around other travelers who have been in town a couple days, have a chat about their recommendations. Then maybe, you can do them together. Sometimes asking someone to take a picture of you leads into a “where are you from?” and “what are you doing here?” Oh hi, new friend. Awesome.

4. Joke about the truth: you don’t know anyone and are looking to make some friends.
“How do you guys all know each other?” and “Where are you from?” is a great way of leading into: “I’m Stephanie, I’m actually traveling solo. It’s kinda crazy, but I’m always looking to meet up with other travelers (or locals). Want to join me on a hike [to grab a bite, to go for a swim etc]?”

I’m all about pulling a Slim Shady (pointing out your weaknesses). If you see another group of travelers and have started a conversation, go ahead and point out that you are traveling solo or with a friends or two and that you want to do something together.

5. Do the whole: post on Facebook to see if anyone knows anyone in that city.
“Hey does anyone know anyone in Barcelona? I’ll be there March 10-16 and would love some tips! Maybe someone to meet up with too.”

Friends of friends are the best travelers to meet up with. Chances are that you’ll get along just fine. If you’re open-minded, you can also meet other travelers on couchsurfing.org – – you don’t have to stay with them to post a message about meeting up. A friend of mine saw Europe by making friends via Tinder too. It doesn’t hurt to download the dating app and write “Traveler in town for the weekend. Looking to meet someone to show me around.” The more open-minded you are, the better your chances are of making new friends.

Stay safe though!

Uncontacted Tribe Emerges From Brazil Rainforest After 'Violent Attacks'

A previously uncontacted tribe has emerged from the jungles of Brazil suffering from flu and saying they’ve been shot at, according to reports.

Footage of the encounter at the Envira River, near the border with Peru, was posted to YouTube by LiveLeak, and can be seen above. Since the Panoan language of the tribe is similar to that of other tribes, interpreters sent in by the government were able to speak with them.

They described being attacked by non-native people and many died after coming down with the flu and diphtheria,” said interpreter Jaminawa Jose Correia, according to a report on the G1 web portal and cited by AFP.

Several of the tribal people have been treated for flu, which could be especially deadly as they have no immunity to the disease.

“At first they were afraid and wary, but thankfully in the end they understood, believed us, trusted the medical team and accepted the medicine,” Carlos Travassos of Brazil’s National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) told Forbes. “It was a difficult and slow dialogue.”

Travassos added that “the group told us their tribe had been shot at by white men.”

While it’s not yet clear who has been shooting at them, advocates believe it was loggers and drug traffickers in Peru who have been moving into tribal lands, causing indigenous peoples to flee.

“If you’re a non-contracted tribe who has some knowledge but very little knowledge of that world out there and what you see is people coming in, stealing your resources, scaring off the game that you rely on for food and most dangerously wielding firearms — this must be an incredibly frightening experience,” Fiona Watson of Survival International told NPR.

Survival International advocates on behalf of uncontacted tribes and works with FUNAI.

This news could hardly be more worrying -– not only have these people confirmed they suffered violent attacks from outsiders in Peru, but they have apparently already caught flu,” Survival International director Stephen Corry said in a news release. “The nightmare scenario is that they return to their former villages carrying flu with them.”

Argentina Slides Into Default For Second Time In 13 Years After Talks With U.S. Creditors Collapse

NEW YORK (AP) — The collapse of talks with U.S. creditors sent Argentina into its second debt default in 13 years and raised questions about what comes next for financial markets and the South American nation’s staggering economy.

A midnight Wednesday deadline to reach a deal with holdout bondholders came and went with Argentine Economy Minister Axel Kicillof holding firm to his government’s position that it could not accept a deal with U.S. hedge fund creditors it dismisses as “vultures.” Kicillof said the funds refused a compromise offer in talks that ended several hours earlier, although he gave no details of that proposal. “We’re not going to sign an agreement that jeopardizes the future of all Argentines,” Kicillof said after he emerged from the meeting with creditors and a mediator in New York City. “Argentines can remain calm because tomorrow will just be another day and the world will keep on spinning.”

But court-appointed mediator Daniel Pollack said a default could hurt bondholders who were not part of the dispute as well as the Argentine economy, which is suffering through a recession, a shortage of dollars and one of the world’s highest inflation rates.

“The full consequences of default are not predictable, but they are certainly not positive,” Pollack said.

An earlier U.S. court ruling had blocked Argentina from making $539 million in interest payments due by midnight Wednesday to other bondholders who separately agreed to restructuring plans with the country in 2005 and 2010.

There was no immediate comment from the hedge funds, which refused to participate in the debt restructurings and won a U.S. court judgment that they be paid the full value of their bonds plus interest — now estimated at roughly $1.5 billion.

Kicillof dismissed a decision by ratings agency Standard & Poor’s to downgrade Argentina’s foreign currency credit rating to “selective default” because of the missed interest payments.

“Who believes in the ratings agencies? Who thinks they are impartial referees of the financial system?” he said.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez had long refused to negotiate with the hedge fund creditors, often calling them “vultures” for picking on the carcass of the country’s record $100 billion default in 2001.

The holdouts, led by New York billionaire Paul Singer’s NML Capital Ltd., spent more than a decade litigating for payment in full rather than agreeing to provide Argentina with debt relief. They also sent lawyers around the globe trying to force Argentina to pay its defaulted debts and were able to get a court in Ghana to temporarily seize an Argentine naval training ship. The threat of seizures forced Fernandez to stop using her presidential plane and instead fly on private jets.

Restoring Argentina’s sense of pride and sovereignty after the 2001-2002 economic collapse has been a central goal of Fernandez and her predecessor and late husband, Nestor Kirchner.

Argentina has made efforts to return to global credit markets that have shunned it since the default. The government paid its debt to the International Monetary Fund and agreed in May with the Paris Club of creditor nations on a plan to begin repaying $9.7 billion in debts unpaid since 2001. It also agreed to a $5 billion settlement with Grupo Repsol after seizing the Spanish company’s controlling stake in Argentina’s YPF oil company.

Analysts say a new default undermines all of these efforts.

“This is unexpected; an agreement seemed imminent,” said Ramiro Castineira of Buenos Aires-based consultancy Econometrica.

“Argentina would have benefited more from complying with the court order in order to get financing for Vaca Muerta,” he added, referring to an Argentine region that has one of the world’s largest deposits of shale oil and gas.

Only a few international companies have made commitments to help develop the fields as many fear the government’s interventionist energy policies. The government has also struggled to get investors because it can’t borrow on the global credit market.

Prices for Argentine bonds had surged to their highest level in more than three years on the possibility that Argentina would reach a deal with the holdout creditors. Argentina’s Merval stock index also climbed more than 6.5 percent in midday trade on a likely deal.

Optimism had been buoyed by reports Wednesday that representatives of Argentina’s private banks association, ADEBA, were set to offer to buy out the debt owed to the hedge funds. In return, the reports said, the U.S. court would let Argentina make the interest payments due before midnight Wednesday and avoid default.

The deal failed to materialize.

“It is an unfortunate situation which is pushing the country into another default. As defaults go, we all know when we get into one but it is very unclear when and how to get out of it,” said Alberto Ramos, Latin America analyst at Goldman Sachs.

“We just added another layer of risk and uncertainty to a macro economy that was already struggling,” Ramos said.

Jason Mraz Talks About Touring All 5 NYC Boroughs

Loveable guitar slinger Jason Mraz released his latest album Yes! last week to both critical acclaim and good sales numbers. While he didn’t beat Weird Al to the number one spot (he was the runner up last week), his album did sell well, and fans are reacting positively well–something Mraz and company were aiming for when they wrote the CD.

To promote Yes! further, the singer songwriter is going on tour, and in doing so is trying some interesting things. Worth noting: when the tour comes around the New York, he’ll be playing shows in each of the five boroughs, something only two other mainstream artists have done before.

After hearing about how well his album fared, Jason spoke with me about the tour and the positive nature of Yes!

2014-07-31-JasonMrazPressPhoto4.jpg

Tell me a bit about the five borough tour you are coming to New York City to do.

It was an idea that I had that I did not expect to get fulfilled. I’m doing much smaller theaters on this run. More intimate shows. I’ve played Madison Square Garden and Jones Beach several times , but I personally don’t enjoy those larger venues. I much prefer theater or a performance space.
I suggested to my management that we find some small theaters and stretch it out over a couple of nights. Maybe there’s a place in each borough that we could do. About two weeks later I got an email back that said “done”. I’m really excited.

When you were first thinking of doing this tour, did you realize you would be only the third mainstream act to do this, behind David Bowie and the Beastie Boys?

No, I assumed that many others have done it. I didn’t really think about it that much. I mean, cab drivers do it everyday. I think there will be a lot of energy in those places as people seldom route there tours through those neighborhoods.

Will you be doing a different set list each night,or will the shows be different in some way?

We will. There are obviously some mainstays in the show. There are a few songs we will play every night, but there will be a pretty good mix up. Even if we’re playing the same set of songs every night, my goal is to mix the arrangements, whether we do an acapella version or a different take on the song, the goal is to have a completely different experience every night.

What does the title Yes! mean, especially with the exclamation point?

It’s like when you shoot a basket and get that perfect swish, and you pump your fist down by your side and say “yes!” It’s one of those. It’s an excited, whispered yes.

I never get that basket.

It’s very rare that I get it as well. That’s why I called this album Yes!, because I got something right in the process. It’s a pretty positive album. Yes is the mother of all positive words, next to love. Maybe love is the father of all positive words.

NomadPlus, Piggybacks Your Apple Charger and Gives Your Extra Juice

NomadPlus

I’m not a big fan of power banks. While useful, I normally prefer to simply bring my charger with me. But there are those odd times when you really need fresh electrons and you are nowhere near a power outlet. With the NomadPlus, you have the best of both. You still have your charger, but it upgrades it into a portable power bank. It simply envelopes your existing Apple charger like an obsessive girlfriend, transforming it into a handy electron carrying juice pumping device. It can charge your iPhone up to 70% capacity, but the good thing is that it can charge your other devices too. $20 if you use the discount code “nomadplus” otherwise it’s $39.

Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan want to save the future of movies on film

The movie industry has seen its share of struggles as we transition into a digital future, and likely no one has felt the pinch more than film company Kodak. The struggling outfit is getting a life-raft, though, in the form of several studios…
