Motorola Faces Sales Injunction In Germany Over Patent Infringement Claims

moto G review 17 640x426Uh-oh, it looks like Motorola could have run into a little spot of trouble over in Germany. It seems that the company might have lost a patent dispute with a company called LPKF Laser & Electronics. Apparently the company claims that Motorola had infringed upon one of their patents related to antennas, and we guess the German courts have ultimately ruled in their favor.

What this means is that Motorola will have to stop selling mobile phones in Germany that have infringed upon said patent. It is unclear which mobile phones will be affected by this sales injunction, but we guess if you see a particular Motorola device disappear from the shelves, there is a good chance that could be it.

For those unfamiliar, LPKF Laser & Electronics are a German company that specializes in the development of systems used in electronics production. The company had reportedly attempted to go after Motorola over that patent in China, but the Chinese courts had ruled the patent to be invalid, but that is a decision the company is currently appealing.

According to the LPKF’s CEO, Ingo Bretthauer, the company is planning on going after other companies who might have potentially infringed upon the patent. In a statement released by a Motorola spokesman to the BBC, “We are disappointed in the decision but Motorola has taken steps to avoid any interruption in supply.”

Ad Agency Wants To Know If You Can Last 99 Days Without Facebook

99 days 640x408Given that Facebook’s stats show that they have managed to achieve more than a billion active users on a monthly basis, it is safe to say that a good majority of us use Facebook. There are many reasons to use Facebook, whether it is to manage your company’s brand or for personal reasons, like to keep up with friends and family.

However are we starting to become too dependent on Facebook? Do you think you could go an entire week without checking Facebook? We know some of you guys can, but we know that some of you guys can’t, and if you’re looking for a way to wean yourself off the social network, a Dutch ad agency Just has announced a campaign in which they want you to quit Facebook for the next 99 days to see if it makes your life happier.

This is pretty much up to you and your self-discipline, so if you think you’re up to the challenge, all you’d have to do is create a personal countdown clock via the 99 Days of Freedom website and share it on your Facebook page, to let your friends and family know what you are doing. Like we said it’s a pledge and not necessarily binding, but if you’re curious as to what life might be like without Facebook, perhaps this could be worth taking a look at.

It also seems that the ad agency could be capitalizing on the controversy over Facebook’s recently published experiment, where they attempted to manipulate the feelings of its users by filtering negative/positive posts to see if it would make a person feel sad/happy. So, anyone planning on taking the plunge?

iBeacon Shipments Expect To Reach 60 Million In 2019

apple logo2While Apple’s iBeacon technology might not necessarily be as widely heralded compared to Apple’s other products and services, like the iPhone, iPad, Siri, and so on, it has quietly been gaining a fair amount of traction, to the point where ABI Research believes that come 2019, Apple would have shipped over 60 million iBeacon devices across the US.

For those wondering about the iBeacon technology, it’s basically where venues can install the technology and have it interact with smartphones whenever the person approaches it and is within proximity. For example we’ve seen how the iBeacon technology has been used in scavenger hunt games, and we’ve also seen how some supermarkets plan to use the technology to broadcast certain deals about certain products as customers step into the premises.

Interestingly enough despite ABI Research’s positive outlook about the technology, they also mention that due to prices starting to drop, Apple might only be able to expect $500 million in hardware revenue over the next few years since they themselves aren’t making the hardware. The research also points out possible competition that could offer extended capabilities with lower profit margins.

According to ABI’s senior analyst, Patrick Connolly, “It may surprise many to see that retail is the smallest market covered in the report. In building terms, many stores are relatively small in comparison to a corporate office or hospital, while the items being tracked i.e. consumers, are already BLE-enabled through their smartphones, further limiting the number of beacons required.”

Mysterious Motorola Handset Surfaces In Video Next To Nexus 5

Word on the street has it that Motorola could be working on the successor to the Moto X called the Moto X+1, but could they be working on another phone as well? Well according to the folks at TK Tech News, the answer is yes. According to their recent post, they claim to have received a couple of videos which shows off a mysterious Motorola handset.

Now before you think, isn’t that the Moto X+1? Well according to TK Tech News, apparently it isn’t. Given that they themselves have posted videos of the alleged Moto X+1, perhaps they know what they’re talking about. That and the fact that the handset in video appears to be larger than the Nexus 5 should also be a sign that it could be a different handset.

This is because the Moto X+1 has been rumored to pack a 5-inch display, so if it is bigger than the Nexus 5 (which has an almost-5-inch display), chances are it could be an entirely new handset that we have yet to hear about.

The device in question also appears to be running on Android L, or at least that’s what it appears to be. For all we know it could simply be a theme designed to look like Android L. According to TK Tech News, they claim that they will be getting the actual device soon, so hopefully we will find out more about the handset in the near future. In the meantime you can check out the video above and below for the details.

Is War on Gaza based on an Israeli Fabrication?

When three Israelis went missing three weeks ago, and before any evidence was made available, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided on his own to pin responsibility on the Islamist movement Hamas. He and his political and military cohorts continued with this fabrication by rounding up hundreds of Hamas activists and pro-Hamas elected members of parliament and shelled Hamas’ Gaza offices. Palestinians released in the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange, which was guaranteed by the Egyptians, were also rounded up in the attempt to pressure Hamas.

When pressed to show proof, the Israelis delivered names of two Hamas activists who were simply not at home when Israeli soldiers went to arrest them. The going theory was that the disappearance of Marwan Qawasmeh and Amer Abu Aisha was nothing more than slam dunk proof that these Hamas activists must have certainly carried out the abduction of the Israelis. Without any more proof than that Israel demolished the homes of the two missing Palestinians. Furthermore, Israeli intelligence activists began a media campaign (using sympathetic journalists) to defame the 10,000 strong Qawasmeh clan, creating an entire story about a “rogue family”.

The accusation of Hamas obviously had ulterior motives that Israel was quick to propagate. The aim of the accusation and arrest of the two Hamas members was nothing less than pressing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to abrogate the reconciliation agreement with the Gaza-based Hamas leadership.

The problem with lies and fabrications is that the truth sometimes interferes. Israel itself has since announced the arrest of Palestinians from Hebron who it accuses of being behind the kidnapping of the three Israelis and they are not the two Hamas names paraded to the media as being behind the act and for which their homes were destroyed. Furthermore, Israel has conceded that while some local elements of Hamas in Hebron might turn out to be behind the act, there is no proof that either the Hamas leadership in Gaza or outside the strip were behind it. The refusal of Hamas leader Khaled Mishaal to condemn the attack was reason enough, according to the Israelis, to keep the pressure on the Islamist movement.

War is often created in the public space and in closed rooms. Having created a major public campaign against Hamas, albeit on false charges, the debate for war moved to the war council. The discussion inside the Israeli mini Cabinet that decides major security issues, quickly turned political. The war of words between Netanyahu and his Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman reveals a typical case of one-upmanship. Lieberman, whose Yisrael Beiteinu Party is in a coalition with Likud, was apparently looking for a reason to bolt this partnership. Accusing the Israeli prime minister of being too soft on Hamas in Gaza, Lieberman broke up the Likud-Beiteinu partnership while continuing to publicly rebuke Netanyahu for refusing to take a strong position on Hamas and not stopping the projectiles coming from Gaza to south Israel.

The problem with the current war on Gaza is that the Israelis have lost the ability of communication with the Hamas leadership. Until recently, Israel was happy to have the Egyptians intercede and if needed guarantee any ceasefire agreement. This happened during the Mohamed Morsi presidency and that ceasefire has generally held until recently. But the Egyptians are unable to help because the Israelis violated their pledge not to re-arrest any of the Palestinians released in the Shalit exchange. The Israelis are also unable to use the good offices of Abbas, as they want him to abrogate his agreement with Hamas rather than solidify it. Any successful intercession by Ramallah to stop the war on Gaza will help revive the political stock of Abbas and cement the reconciliation agreement. It is clear that Israel’s leadership want neither. They want a weak Abbas and they want the Fateh-Hamas reconciliation dissolved.

A war that has been based on a lie will surely become public sooner or later. In the same way that Israel was exposed for the lie that it knew from day one that the three Israelis were killed, the lie about Hamas will be exposed sooner or later. The only question that remains is how many Palestinians and Israelis will have to suffer while this lie continues to be treated as truth.

Why Is Some Ice Clear and Some Cloudy?

Why Is Some Ice Clear and Some Cloudy?

Unless you happen to have a specialized ice machine in your home, it is practically guaranteed that the ice your freezer makes is of the cloudy variety. A popular and well known trick to making clear(er) ice is to either boil the water first or use distilled water. However, even doing this won’t guarantee the kind of perfectly clear ice you’d find in a high-end bar or restaurant. This is because how clear ice is, is only partially dependent on the purity of the water you use, meaning even if you managed to procure the tears of a Saint and pass them through the world’s best water filter, you’d still likely end up with ice that was a little cloudy.

Toshiba Wearable Sensor Arrives This September

toshiba wearable sensorToshiba is set to introduce a new wearable biological sensor which will be worn on your body, where it will see action in verification tests as well as evaluation. Called the “Silmee Bar type,” this wearable biological sensor will be sold to universities as well as enterprises and research institutes later this coming September in Japan. Do bear in mind that the Silmee Bar type is not meant to be a pharmaceutical product.

Just what can the Silmee Bar type be able to achieve? For starters, this wearable biological sensor is capable of measuring an electrocardiogram, in addition to pulse waves, body motions and skin temperature – simultaneously. It will need to be attached to the chest alongside a gel pad in order to work at the optimal level, and based on the data collected that will comprise the likes of heartbeat interval, pulse wave interval, the amount of body motion and posture, one will be able to make an inference to whatever particular field that one is interested in.

The results collected will be tabulated and shown on the display of a smartphone or tablet device, where such results will be sent over using a Bluetooth connection. This particular wearable biological sensor is relatively small at 64mm x 28mm x 9.6mm, and it tips the scale at approximately 14.6 grams. Expect it to comply with IPX5/IPX7 (waterproof) standards.
