George Clooney Pens Op-Ed Addressing Marriage Rumors, Calls Daily Mail 'Dangerous'

George Clooney may be used to the spotlight and the scrutiny and half-truths that come with it, but he is having none of that when it comes to his upcoming nuptials with Amal Alamuddin. In an op-ed for USA Today published early Wednesday morning, July 9, the actor voices his disdain and concern regarding a recent slew of rumors about Alamuddin’s mother and her supposed objection to the marriage, as written up in the Daily Mail.

In his column, Clooney refers to a particular story, published Monday, July 7, which states that Alamuddin’s mother is “unimpressed” with the A-lister and “wants [her] daughter to marry within their strict Lebanese religious sect.”

I seldom respond to tabloids, unless it involves someone else and their safety or well being. The Daily Mail has printed a completely fabricated story about my fiancée’s mother opposing our marriage for religious reasons. It says Amal’s mother has been telling ‘half of Beirut’ that she’s against the wedding. It says they joke about traditions in the Druze religion that end up with the death of the bride.

Let me repeat that: the death of the bride.

[T]his lie involves larger issues. The irresponsibility, in this day and age, to exploit religious differences where none exist, is at the very least negligent and more appropriately dangerous. We have family members all over the world, and the idea that someone would inflame any part of that world for the sole reason of selling papers should be criminal.

Meanwhile, photos have emerged of the actor’s and his fiancee’s mothers bonding in Italy. Over on People, Nina Bruce Clooney and Baria Alamuddin are not only smiling for the cameras, the magazine claims they “bonded over a day of shopping around Lake Como” last weekend.

Whether the Mail’s claims are true or fabricated (they source “close family friends”) this wouldn’t be the first time the British tabloid has been called into question, to say the least. Just last January, author JK Rowling sued the Mail for libel after it ran a story online under the headline “How JK Rowling’s sob story about her past as a single mother has left the churchgoers who cared for her upset and bewildered.” Rowling claimed that “doing it injured her reputation and caused her great distress and embarrassment,” according to The Guardian.

In 2006, the Daily Mail paid Elton John 100,000 pounds (approximately $171,000) after the musician sued the tabloid for libel for “claiming falsely that the singer banned guests from talking to him at a charity fundraising event,” per The Guardian.

Though not sued in this instance, the Daily Mail hasn’t yet responded to Clooney’s statement. This story will update once a response comes through.

This Is How You Peel An Entire Bag Of Potatoes In Under 60 Seconds

There are a lot of reasons to peel potatoes — cheese fries, tater tots and potato salad, to name a few — but that doesn’t make the work of peeling them any less of a chore. It’s not that this kitchen task is hard, being that it doesn’t require even the slightest degree of culinary skill, it just takes a lot of time.

Turns out, it doesn’t have to be that way. A potato-peeling hero has surfaced on YouTube, and he’s taught the world how to peel an entire bag of potatoes in under 60 seconds. Not only does this trick save you a lot of time, it also looks like fun. Plus, this guy’s way of peeling potatoes lets you feel like a badass while feeding a crowd at the same time. What could be better?

Because it all happens so fast, here’s what you need to know: You will need is a power hose, a bucket, a drill and a cheap toilet bowl brush (though we’re pretty certain any type of brush — one that’s not related to the bathroom — would work too). A bag of potatoes and access to a water source are also essential, as is an outdoor space, because this task can get a little messy. Add the potatoes to a bucket. Attach the end of the toilet brush onto the drill. With the hose in one hand and the drill in the other, turn both on and attack those spuds.

Watch the video above to see this trick in action. Then, go make a mountain of potato salad, because it just got infinitely easier.

Kate Upton: 'I've Never Really Compared Myself To Other People'

There’s no doubt Kate Upton is on top of the world, having conquered everything from magazines to movies (not to mention being a bona fide social media mogul). The model and actress just added EXPRESS brand ambassador to her résumé, and we had the chance to sit down with Upton to chat about all things style. Here’s what she had to say.

On body confidence:

“I never really compared myself to other people, and I think that’s maybe where insecurities are drawn from –- comparing your body to other people’s bodies.”

On her favorite magazine cover:

“I loved working with Tonne Goodman and Mario Testino for American Vogue, and just the whole shoot and the energy was just so positive and happy. And every shoot I’ve done since with them has been like that, but that was my favorite because that was my first one.”

On her weirdest daily ritual:

“I always have to have a coffee, I always have to have eggs and spinach every morning… And I always wake up and have to have a glass of water with lemon right away.”

On her dream gig:

“My dream is to continue doing what I’m doing, because I’m in such a great position where I can work with companies that I actually really love and believe in and want to be a part of, so that makes my job a lot easier.”

On her advice to young girls:

“Instead of looking at someone and envying part of their body or their face, look at how they hold themselves. Appreciate their confidence.”

New Perfume-Inspired Cocktail Bar Is Making Our Heads Hurt

From ice bars to underwater restaurants to Japanese sake houses where monkeys are waiters, we’ve seen a lot of gimmicky places to get a drink. However none so far have given us a headache just by reading about them until now. The Ritz-Carlton hotel in Berlin opened a perfume-inspired cocktail bar on June 12, and it’s causing us to pause.

The bar, aptly named Fragrances, encourages patrons to select their cocktails based on matching scents. Fragrances currently offers a selection 15 cocktails, each corresponding to a different perfume. Designer perfumes from the likes of Giorgio Armani and Yves Saint Laurent sit beside respective liquors so that patrons may smell before they taste. “At Fragrances, we want our guests not only to enjoy their drinks, but to experience them,” bar manager Arnd Heissen told The Drinks Business.

Cocktails are as elaborate as the setup. The Earl Grey and Cucumber, for example, consists of Earl Grey infused Don Julio Reposado, pink lady apple juice, jasmine tea and vanilla, honey and cucumber syrup. It was inspired by the Jo Malone fragrance. Heissen told Yahoo Food that there have been no sponsorhip deals between the perfume companies and the Ritz Berlin, and that the hotel does not sell any of the perfumes.

Non-alcoholic beverages, like the Messe de Minuit and Penhaligon’s Orange Blossom, are also available, as are fragrance-inspired bar snacks — whatever those might be.

We’re curious to see how Fragrances fares, since we’ve always followed the rule prohibiting scented candles on the dinner table. Perhaps we’ve been mistaken this whole time, though. For now, we’re going to sit back and watch from a distance, because we’re feeling all this perfume and cocktail talk right between the eyes, in a throbbing sort of way.

Typically we get headaches after we leave a bar — like, the next morning when we wake up and need a Bloody Mary injection and an egg sandwich to the face. But before we even enter? We’re not so sure we’re ready for that. Would you go to a perfume-inspired cocktail bar? What perfume…er… cocktail would you choose?

How Your Sleep Habits Can Lead To Weight Gain (VIDEO)

We’re all well-versed in how healthy eating and exercise help to avoid packing on the pounds, but one little-known catalyst for weight gain may happening overnight, while you sleep — or don’t, as it turns out.

Registered dietician Rebecca Scritchfield recently spoke with #OWNSHOW about the correlation between sleep and weight gain, explaining how getting less than seven or eight hours of sleep can make you overeat the next day.

“What we know in the research is that when you have, say, five hours of sleep, you actually have an increase in a hormone called ghrelin. Think of this as your growth hormone — it actually increases your appetite the next day,” Scritchfield explains. “You also decrease your hormone called leptin, which is what suppresses your appetite.”

The bottom line: If you don’t get enough sleep, you’ll be hungrier when you wake up. And that’s not all, according to Scritchfield.

“You tend to crave the foods that are high in salt, sugar and fat,” she adds.

What’s also notable about the impact of these hormones is how quickly you feel the effects.

“If you’ve had one bad night of sleep… the next day, you’re tired, you’re cranky, irritable, your mood is off, your cravings are off,” Scritchfield says. “So, it doesn’t take much to produce these hormonal changes that can, over time, impact your weight.”

Additional factors that affect weight:
The biggest mistakes people make when ordering take-out
The weight-gaining condition that affects 75 percent of Americans
The ingredient that sends your body into a cycle of unhealthy eating

City Educators Want Smartphone Curfew For Teens In Japan

japan phone curfewDo you as a parent or guardian feel that you should never have purchased that iPhone 5s or Samsung Galaxy S5 for your teen? After all, that smartphone virtually spelled the death of actual conversation in the household, as your teen became enamored with emojis and other kinds of virtual communication, even late into the night, with other humans. Well, some of the older folks are fighting back, so to speak, where the Board of Education in Kasuga, Japan, declared their intention to hold a curfew among junior high school students in the city so that they will not use their smartphones when the clock strikes 10 in the evening.

Working alongside local schools as well as parent-teacher associations, this particular board hopes that this initiative will be able to see students hand their smartphones over to adults between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., but so far, there has been not punishments set just yet in case there is a cheeky violator here and there.

With ubiquitous Internet access increasing the difficulty for parents to supervise their children, there are other inherent risks involved, such as cyberbullying, private information leaks, potential blackmail due to the sharing of revealing and racy photos, as well as unintended consumption of pay media. Do you think that this particular smartphone curfew idea would work outside of Japan?
