Apple, Samsung Starting To Lose Market Share To Huawei & Lenovo

huawei mate 2 review 06 in hand 640x426When it comes to smartphone shipments, we guess we can’t blame you if you thought that companies such as Apple and Samsung would be taking the largest slices of the pie. After all both brands are extremely well known and extremely popular amongst smartphone users, but it seems that they are slowly being displaced by the likes of companies out of China, such as Huawei and Lenovo.

This is according to the recent figures released by the IDC (via 9to5Mac) which shows that while Apple and Samsung continue to maintain the lion’s share in smartphone shipments, they are slowly starting to lose ground to said companies.

According to the IDC, back in 2013 in the same period, Samsung and Apple command a market share of 32.3% and 13% respectively. However fast forward to 2014, the market share of both companies has taken a dip and are at 25.2% and 11.9% respectively. This is compared to the likes of Huawei and Lenovo who grew from 4.3% and 4.7% respectively to 6.9% and 5.4%. LG, on the other hand, actually saw a slight drop from 5% in 2013 to 4.9% in 2014.

Given that Huawei has been known to churn out affordable handsets and with Lenovo’s plan to flood the market with as many as 60 smartphones this year, we can’t say that we’re too surprised. Other Chinese companies such as Xiaomi have also expressed their interest to expand to more countries as well as enter the North American market, so safe to say that Samsung and Apple will be in for some stiff competition.

Apple Patent Hints At FaceTime Designed For The Enterprise

facetime 640x610Apple’s recent announcement of their partnership with IBM is definitely a sign that the Cupertino company has serious plans to get into the enterprise market. However what works for regular consumers might not necessarily work for enterprise customers, FaceTime being an example. While FaceTime’s quality isn’t horrible, it isn’t particularly stellar either.

It’s great for regular folks who just wants to video call, but for enterprise customers, we reckon the pixels and blurred images probably won’t cut it. Well thanks to a recent patent by Apple, it looks like the Cupertino company could be thinking about a more high-definition and enterprise-friendly version of FaceTime.

According to the patent, it describes a system in which people seated around a conference table could all join in on a video call, as opposed to crowding behind a single camera. The patent also describes how Apple plans to allowing higher quality videos to be streamed, which would be lower the quality for non-active participants, thus allowing more bandwidth for the active participant.

This ensures that at least one party will be given higher quality video when it matters. Of course we’re not sure how this will work if everyone is talking and contributing at the same time, but it’s an interesting idea nonetheless. However given that this is just a patent, we have no way of knowing if Apple ever plans on making it a reality, but what do you guys think? Could this be one of the ways Apple plans on imposing their platform for enterprise customers?

Sapphire iPhone 6 Displays Unlikely, Market Research Firm Claims

iphone 6 clone 1 640x473It has long been rumored that Apple could be turning to the use of sapphire for the iPhone 6’s displays. As it stands, only the Touch ID component and camera lens cover uses sapphire, but with the iPhone 6, the entire front display could feature the material. However according to recent report from market research firm, TrendForce (via AppleInsider), that is apparently no longer the case.

They claim that if Apple had plans to start using sapphire in a larger way, they would have begun shipment of the material to their assembly partners in June, assuming of course they are planning on launching their iPhones in September. However given that those shipments have yet to surface, they believe that either we will see a delayed release of the iPhone 6, or that quantities could be constrained.

Both scenarios are plausible since we have heard rumors that Apple could be facing some production issues with the 5.5-inch model, causing it be released in December, as opposed to September which many had initially expected it to. Alternate rumors have hinted that the sapphire displays could be limited to the larger iPhone models, and with all these conflicting reports, it’s hard to determine which is true.

In any case do take it with a grain of salt for now, but with Apple expected to announce their new iPhones in September, we guess we won’t have to wait too long to find out what exactly is going on, so do check back with us at a later date for the details!

Self-Driving Cars To Be Allowed On UK’s Public Roads In 2015

volvo self driving 640x426In some ways it is understandable that some governments are a little apprehensive about self-driving cars. After all humans themselves make errors while driving, should we trust a computer to be behind the wheel? Well for those living in the UK, you might be pleased to learn that according to a report from the BBC, it seems that self-driving cars will be allowed on public roads come January 2015.

According to Business Secretary Vince Cable, “Today’s announcement will see driverless cars take to our streets in less than six months, putting us at the forefront of this transformational technology and opening up new opportunities for our economy and society.” Ministers will also be ordering a review of the UK’s road regulations to help provide appropriate guidelines for self-driving cars.

In the meantime, UK cities have been asked to declare their interest if they wish for their city to play host to self-driving car trials. These cities have until October to declare their interest, after which the tests are expected to run from 18 months to 36 months. However while self-driving cars might eventually be made road legal, we guess more manufacturers need to come on board.

As it stands, Google is one of the companies with a self-driving car of their own, and we have also seen attempts from the Oxford university, Nissan, and Volvo.

LG G Vista Rumored For Thursday Launch On Verizon

lg g vista verizon 640x394So we have been hearing a lot about the LG G Vista. According to the rumors, the handset could be headed Verizon’s way and according to the folks at Droid-Life, they claim that according to their sources, the handset could be released as soon as this Thursday. The handset is expected to be priced at $99 with a new two-year contract, or $499 for those who’d rather not be tied down.

As far as its specs are concerned, the LG G Vista is not the high-end handset we had initially thought, although it does share some features of the high-end LG G3 in the form of a laser auto focus. However apart from that, the rumors of the handset includes a 5.7-inch display with a 720p HD resolution, a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, a microSD card, an 8MP rear-facing camera, and will come with Android 4.4 KitKat.

As far as the design is concerned. it looks a lot like the LG G3. However it is slightly bigger with its 5.7-inch display, making it 0.2-inches larger than the LG G3, but given the fact that the handset only packs a 720p HD display versus the LG G3’s QHD display, safe to say that in terms of sharpness, the LG G3 takes the cake. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but if the rumors are right, we guess we can look forward to hearing an announcement from Verizon tomorrow.

Sony Passes On EA Access, Claims It Doesn’t Represent Good Value

ea access 640x286Just yesterday EA announced EA Access which is basically where Xbox One gamers can gain access to EA’s catalogue of games by paying a subscription fee of $4.99 a month. Given that sometimes games can be pretty expensive, $4.99 a month does seem like a pretty good price to pay, right?

Well unfortunately not everyone feels that way, at least not Sony who is Microsoft’s direct competitor as far as gaming is concerned. Speaking to Game Informer, Sony felt that the EA Access subscription program was not representative of good value to the PlayStation gamer, which is why they decided to pass on it.

According to Sony, “PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200% since the launch of PlayStation 4, which shows that gamers are looking for memberships that offer a multitude of services, across various devices, for one low price. We don’t think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer.”

It kind of makes sense, unless of course the majority of your games are from EA, in which the EA Access program would no doubt be value for money, but like Sony said, if you’re planning on playing many types of games from different publishers, paying $5 a month for EA-specific titles could feel a bit expensive. What do you guys think?

Google Search Suggestions Will Take Hotel Bookings Into Consideration

google search updateOne of the handy and convenient features of Google is that it knows your searches based on your previous searches. It also knows what you’re up to based on emails you’ve received, which is why sometimes Google Now will display reminds for upcoming flights and so on. Some might think it’s creepy, but others find it useful.

That being said, if you’re planning on going on a holiday and want to know good places around your hotel to eat or check out, Google has recently announced that they have made changes to Google Search where it will now take into consideration the hotel you are staying at and will be able to display more relevant search results.

According to Google, “Tap the mic on the Google app and say “Show me restaurants around my hotel” or “Give me directions to my hotel from here.” It sounds like a pretty handy feature and is one of the many changes that Google has been making to their services these days. Recently Google added the ability to add reminders via Google Search. In any case if you’re traveling and have access to the internet, perhaps this is a feature that could come in handy. So, anyone planning on taking advantage of the new feature in their travels?

Nokia Z Launcher For Android Updated

nokia z launcher androidBack in June, Nokia launched their first Android launcher called the Z Launcher. What made the Z Launcher so unique compared to other launchers is the fact that users would be able to swipe and perform gestures in the launcher itself to launch apps. For example drawing the letter “M” could bring up apps like Mail, Messages, and so on.

The launcher has also been designed to display your most used apps at a glance, so users won’t have to dig through their app drawer or folders to find their apps. Now the good news is that the launcher was launched in beta and recently Nokia announced that they have made some updates to the launcher as well as opened up the beta to more users.

According to Nokia, “If you were one of the people who previously requested to join our pre-beta after we reached capacity early in the trial, you can now download and start using Z Launcher. While we are not ready to open the private beta to everyone, we made it a priority to invite people who previously tried to join the trial.”

As far as the new features are concerned, it seems that the development team has taken some of its users’ recommendations to heart. The launcher will now allow users to configure their favorites, hide apps, additional support for handsets like the HTC One and the Moto X, data insight, along with a variety of bug fixes.

As it stands the app is still in a somewhat private beta and it does not seem like the team is ready to open it up to the public just yet. However if you were lucky enough to get in, then perhaps this is an update you’ll want to check out.

Mid-2014 27-inch iMac Listed In Apple Support Document

imac27 mid2014 640x224Earlier we reported that thanks to an Apple support document for the Boot Camp software, a certain mid 2014 Mac Mini was spotted. It was interesting because the last time Apple released a Mac Mini, it was way back 2012, suggesting that a refresh is definitely in order. However it seems that another Apple computer has been sighted in the support document, as spotted by the folks at Consomac.

As you can see in the screenshot above, it references a 27-inch iMac for mid-2014. Considering that the last iMac refresh took place last month and it was for the 21.5-inch iMacs, we guess it is also about time that Apple refreshed their 27-inch iMac as well. However Apple has yet to make any announcement and last we checked, the Apple Online Store’s listing has not changed.

Now there have been rumors suggesting that Apple could be getting ready to introduce a 27-inch iMach with Retina display, at least according to files spotted in OS X 10.10 Yosemite, but as whether or not that model will actually launch this year remains to be seen. Some speculate that Apple could be going the entry-level route and introduce a more affordable 27-inch iMac.

However given that the 27-inch iMac has typically been Apple’s high-end offering, it doesn’t really make sense. In any case make what you will of the listing in the support document, but hopefully Apple will announce something soon.

Facebook Hit With $123 Million Lawsuit Over Revenge Porn

facebook unfollowRevenge porn is nasty business and it seems that in several parts of the US, it has actually been banned. For those unfamiliar, revenge porn is usually where an ex-lover posts intimate photos and/or videos on the internet for the whole world to see, usually as “payback” for breaking up with them.

While there are plenty of revenge porn websites around, it seems that the last place one would expect it would be Facebook, but yet according to a recent report from TheWrap, the social networking giant has been slapped with a whopping $123 million lawsuit over a revenge porn page.

The story goes like this: a woman from Houston claims she is a victim of revenge porn when her former friend setup a fake Facebook page in her name and doctored photos of her where he placed her face on naked bodies of other women. The woman claims that she had requested Facebook to take it down, but it was only until the Houston Police Department subpoenaed Facebook did they finally take down the page.

However the woman in question felt that it was too little too late, and has since filed a lawsuit against the social network and her former friend. How did she arrive at the $123 million lawsuit? Well she was seeking damages at a rate of 10 cents for every one of Facebook’s 1.23 billion sucscribers.

According to the lawsuit, “This lawsuit is intended … to get Defendant Facebook, it’s officers, directors, management, employees and subscribers (with media attention) to stand up, take notice and pay attention to the serious privacy violations concerns involved in revenge porn situations.” Facebook has yet to respond to the lawsuit.
