U.S. Presses Case Against Russia On Downed Jet

By Anton Zverev and Matt Spetalnick

HRABOVE, Ukraine/WASHINGTON, July 21 (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry laid out what he called overwhelming evidence of Russian complicity in the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 as international horror deepened over the fate of the victims’ remains.

Kerry demanded that Moscow take responsibility for actions of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine whom Washington suspects of downing the jet with a missile, and expressed disgust at their “grotesque” mishandling of the bodies.

Television images of the rebel-held crash sites, where the remains of victims had lain decomposing in fields among their personal belongings, have turned initial shock and sorrow after Thursday’s disaster into anger.

Emotions ran high in the Netherlands, the home country of about two-thirds of the 298 people who died in the Boeing 777. The Dutch foreign minister has said the nation is “furious” to hear bodies were being “dragged around”, while relatives and church leaders demanded they be rapidly returned home.

But the departure of dozens of corpses loaded into refrigerated railway wagons was delayed on Sunday as Ukrainian officials and rebels traded blame over why the train had not yet left the war zone, and where or when international investigators would be able to check it.

The U.N. Security Council is scheduled to vote on Monday on a resolution that would condemn the downing of the plane and demands that those responsible be held accountable and that armed groups not compromise the integrity of the crash site.

In an apparent bid to compromise with Moscow, the wording of the resolution, drafted by Australia, was changed to characterize the incident as the “downing” of the flight, instead of “shooting down,” according to the final draft obtained by Reuters. Diplomats said it was unclear if Russia would support the final version.

In Washington, Kerry criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin and threatened “additional steps” against Moscow.

“Drunken separatists have been piling bodies into trucks and removing them from the site,” he said on NBC television on Sunday. “What’s happening is really grotesque and it is contrary to everything President Putin and Russia said they would do.”

Moscow denies any involvement in the disaster and has blamed the Ukrainian military. While stopping short of direct blame on Moscow, Kerry put forward the most detailed U.S. accusations so far, based on the latest U.S. intelligence assessments.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond urged Moscow to ensure international investigators had access to the crash sites. “Russia risks becoming a pariah state if it does not behave properly,” he told Sky television.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said he had spoken “overnight” to Putin for the first time about the disaster, amid mounting horror over the treatment of victims’ remains. At least 27 Australian passengers were on the Malaysia Airlines flight.

Abbott said an Australian investigation team was in Kiev but had been unable to travel to the site. He said there had been some improvement with the Ukrainian government offering access.

“But there’s still a hell of a long way to go before anyone could be satisfied with the way that site is being treated,” Abbott said. “It’s more like a garden cleanup than a forensic investigation. This is completely unacceptable.”

After lying for two days in the summer heat, the bodies had been removed from much of the crash site by Sunday, leaving only bloodstained military stretchers along the side of the road.

Emergency workers, who have to navigate reporting both to the authorities in Kiev and the rebels who control the crash site and other areas in the Donetsk region, will now need to pick through the debris spread across the Ukrainian steppe.

As Ukraine accused the rebels of hiding evidence relating to the loss of the airliner, a separatist leader said items thought to be the stricken jet’s “black boxes” were now in rebel hands.

Investigators from the U.N. aviation agency arrived in Ukraine to help probe the crash, but a senior official said safety concerns prevented them from reaching the crash site.

“Until safe passage for them is assured, we don’t send people into that kind of situation,” said the official with the Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organization.

U.S. CASE

Kerry said the United States had seen supplies moving into Ukraine from Russia in the last month, including a 150-vehicle convoy of armored personnel carriers, tanks and rocket launchers given to the separatists.

It had also intercepted conversations about the transfer to separatists of the Russian radar-guided SA-11 missile system, which it blames for the Boeing 777’s destruction. “It’s pretty clear that this is a system that was transferred from Russia,” Kerry said in an interview on CNN.

“There’s enormous amount of evidence, even more evidence that I just documented, that points to the involvement of Russia in providing these systems, training the people on them,” he said on CBS.

Kerry’s evidence of a Russian connection tracked closely with an official unclassified U.S. intelligence summary released over the weekend. It said intelligence analysts confirmed the authenticity of an audiotaped conversation provided to the press by Ukrainian authorities of a known separatist leader boasting of downing the plane.

“We also have information indicating that Russia is providing training to separatist fighters at a facility in southwest Russia” that includes missile systems, it said.

The disaster has sharply deepened the Ukrainian crisis in which the separatists in the Russian-speaking east have been fighting government forces since protesters in Kiev forced out a pro-Moscow president and Russia annexed Crimea in March.

The United States has already imposed sanctions on individuals and businesses close to Putin but Kerry indicated that President Barack Obama might go further. “The president is prepared to take additional steps,” he told Fox News, although he ruled out sending in U.S. troops.

European Union ministers should be ready to announce a fresh round of sanctions at a meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council this week, said a statement from British Prime Minister David Cameron’s office, issued after telephone calls with French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“They … agreed that the EU must reconsider its approach to Russia and that foreign ministers should be ready to impose further sanctions on Russia when they meet on Tuesday,” it said.

The leaders also agreed to press Putin to ensure investigators had free access to the crash site.

IDENTIFICATION SPECIALISTS

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said all efforts were focusing on getting the train loaded with bodies to territory controlled by the Ukrainian authorities.

The European security organization, the OSCE, was negotiating with the separatists, he said, adding that a team of victim identification specialists was likely to enter the crash site on Monday.

While Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko issued a renewed appeal for backing from the international community, some European nations, with an eye to their trade links with Russia, have been less enthusiastic about confronting Moscow.

Kerry challenged the Europeans to be more assertive. “It would help enormously if some countries in Europe that have been a little reluctant to move would now recognize this wakeup call and join the United States and President Obama in taking the lead, and also stepping up,” he said.

A spokesman for Ukraine’s Security Council, Andriy Lysenko, accused the rebels of a cover-up. “The terrorists are doing everything to hide the evidence of the involvement of Russian missiles in the shooting down of that airliner,” he told a news conference in Kiev.

He said the rebels had taken debris and bodies from the crash site in trucks, tampering with a scene that investigators need to be secure to have a chance of determining what and who caused the plane to plunge into the steppe.

MEMORIAL SHRINE

OSCE observers visited part of the crash site for a third day on Sunday. Just before their arrival, emergency workers found parts of three more bodies and put them in black body bags on the side of a road.

At the site where the cockpit fell, in a field of sunflowers near the village of Razsypnoye, residents had made a small memorial shrine of flowers, candles in tiny jars and brightly colored teddy bears.

Photocopied pictures of children and families killed in the disaster, apparently from news coverage of the victims, had been set out on the grass.

All bodies, including that of a woman who had lain naked under a tarp about 50 meters away, had been removed.

“There were five or six over here, and two or three over there,” said a young man with a rifle guarding the site, who declined to give his name. “They took the bodies away to the morgue. Firstly, they were decomposing. And secondly, the smell was horrible.” (Additional reporting by Peter Graff in Hrabove, Pavel Polityuk, Natalia Zinets and Elizabeth Piper in Kiev, Jim Loney, Doina Chiacu, Ayesha Rascoe and Mark Hosenball in Washington, Michelle Nichols at the United Nations, Allison Lampert in Montreal, Lincoln Feast and Jane Wardell in Sydney, William James in London and Nicholas Vinocur in Paris; Writing by Giles Elgood and David Stamp; Editing by Tom Heneghan, Peter Cooney and Eric Walsh)

The Moment in Madison Square

My feet pounded hard into the pavement as I turned the corner onto Bull Street.  My camera slammed against my hip over and over again as I hurried toward the south, anxious to beat the rain that threatened in the distance.  As I approached Madison Square, I was slowed by the gaggle of teal-clad women ahead of me, tiptoeing with trepidation across the street so as to not dirty their shoes or, even more importantly, drop the handfuls of white wedding dress they carried.  Coming back to myself, I watched them delicately and carefully carry the bottom of Bride’s dress over the bricks as her crinoline crinkled around her with every step.  Reaching the square, I crossed to the other side to continue on my way.

That’s when I saw him.

There was Groom, standing with his back turned in the middle of the square, looking down squarely at his shoes.  He stood perfectly still, hands clasped, his eyes turned down and shoulders locked.  Like a soldier at the ready, he waited for her.

All at once, I was overcome with the weight of the moment and I found I couldn’t take another step.  Suddenly very aware of my frizzy hair and rumpled t-shirt, I scurried to a more conspicuous spot to make sure I didn’t inadvertently wind up in someone’s living room photo album.  I retreated to behind a tree, my destination all but forgotten, and watched.

In mere seconds, I was undone.  Under the canopy of the Savannah oaks, the gravity of the moment came barreling into my chest and before I knew it, the tears had started to drop from my cheeks.

Bride, you looked absolutely breathtaking.  I could go on and on about that mermaid style dress and how it was perfectly suited for you, how the simple pearls you wore around your neck danced a bit as you took deep breaths.  But my dear, it was your eyes that held my attention.  Your bridesmaids fluttered about you, arranging your dress, tucking a small lock of hair behind your ear, spreading your veil out perfectly behind you, but you didn’t really even notice they were there.

Your eyes never left him.

Groom, you were unmoved.  Resolute to fight the temptation to wheel around to lay eyes on her, you stayed.  Hands clasped and eyes locked on the ground, you waited as the anticipation filled the space between you.  She continued to gaze at you, watching you as your mind swirled with thoughts of her.

Then just like that, you saw me.  Groom, you lifted your head and your eyes came away from your shoes and fixed on the woman on the bench with the teal iPhone lifted in your direction.  At the very same moment that your eyes met mine, Bride’s eyes dropped for an instant to compose herself before taking her first step toward you.

For that split second, it was just you and me.

I wanted to tell you so many things.  I wanted to tell you how beautiful she looked, how she smiled at you with such joy, and how I could see how much she loved you even from behind a tree across the square.

But I also wanted to tell you that this moment doesn’t last forever.  I wanted to tell you about the unmet expectations you are guaranteed to struggle with, the confusion you will experience, the late-night arguments, and the frustration when she just doesn’t understand.  I wanted you to know about the incredible blessing of children and their uncanny ability to simultaneously strengthen and break you.  I wanted to tell you about the shift that happens inside of you when that ring goes on your hand.  That suddenly your life is no longer about you, that it must become about her.  That gorgeous creature behind you is looking to you to carry her, to cover her, to lead her, to hold her, to protect her.

Her eyes lifted and she took that first slow, purposeful step toward him.

Do you know why I was in Madison Square that day?  I was on my way to Forsyth Park to see the fountain and walk the oak-covered path.  I wanted to ask a kind stranger to take a photo of my husband and I in front of the fountains, one I could frame and hang on the wall to commemorate our trip to Savannah to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary.

But he wasn’t there.

I sat in that square alone that afternoon because we had a fight.  I wanted to go to Forsyth Park right that very instant because the clouds in the distance were threatening to rain on my parade, so we needed to get a move on.  After a three-hour walking tour of the city in the morning and more walking on the agenda for the evening, he was more interested in taking a bit of a rest in between so as not to burn out before dinner.  I was unwilling to relinquish my hold on my precious itinerary, so I stormed off in a huff, determined to just go by myself, thankyouverymuch.

I entered Madison Square angry, disappointed, frustrated, and annoyed.

But you, Bride and Groom, helped remind me of what was truly important. God brought me to that exact square, at that exact moment for a very specific reason.  He wanted me to see YOU.

He wanted to remind me of the slow, purposeful steps that it takes to sustain a marriage over a lifetime.  He wanted to make sure that I remembered that he was the one who joined us together ten years ago and no matter what struggles, betrayals, unmet expectations, and disappointment came our way, he would never leave us or forsake us.  He wanted me to remember the way that Evan looked at me on that day, ten years ago, full of the same love and adoration I saw on the faces of Bride and Groom.  I realized that I still catch him looking at me that way, even now.  He wanted to gently tell me that ten years is only the beginning for us, that he had some fantastic things in store for us and many more memories for us to make, maybe even some to photograph and hang in a frame on the wall.

Bride and Groom, I wish you abundant blessings.  I hope your wedding day was everything you dreamed it would be and that the rain that drenched us later as we walked through Bonaventure Cemetery didn’t disrupt your celebration too much.

I’m grateful to have been privy to this moment between you even more thankful for the things it gave me to think about as I continued on to Forsyth Park on my own.  I took a super-lame fountain selfie and returned to the hotel where Evan and I talked about our disagreement that afternoon and moved past it.  We laced up our walking shoes to go grab a coffee down the street and I told him all about the moment I saw you in Madison Square.

My super-lame fountain selfie.  🙂

In Comcast/Time Warner Merger, Public Interest Is Paramount

New York State’s Public Service Commission (PSC) is currently reviewing Comcast’s plan to purchase Time Warner Cable for over $45 billion, a merger which would link the nation’s two largest cable companies. This merger has the potential to affect millions of New Yorkers who rely on Time Warner Cable for TV, phone, and internet access at home and at their place of business. As a result, it is critical that state and federal regulators review the proposal to determine whether it is truly in the best interests of consumers.

Today, I submitted testimony to the PSC, urging it to do just that. For Comcast, this is an opportunity to do the right thing by introducing itself to the New York market as a company that values equitable access and understands that its product–the fourth utility of the modern age–must be available to all New Yorkers. If Comcast fails to provide a detailed, practical plan to both address the ongoing digital divide in New York City and ensure its long-term commitment to net neutrality, the PSC should reject the merger.

As Gotham’s residents know all too well, our city is stuck in an internet stone age. According to a study by the Open Technology Institute at the New America Foundation, New Yorkers not only endure slower internet service than similar cities in other parts of the world, but we also pay higher prices for that substandard service.

Today, nearly 3 million New York City residents lack internet access at home and many entrepreneurs who hoped to launch businesses in former industrial districts within the five boroughs have had to abandon (PDF) those plans after discovering high-speed internet connections were not available.

While there is a significant digital divide in New York on socioeconomic lines, the truth is that no neighborhood is immune from poor internet. As a report (PDF) I issued last year found, from Tribeca to Tompkinsville, the Upper East Side to East Flatbush, the South Bronx to Sheepshead Bay, communities across the city and throughout the state are affected by poor broadband.

To date, Comcast’s effort to close the digital divide have focused on its “Internet Essentials” program, which provides internet access to low-income Americans for $10 a month. However, the program’s limited eligibility has kept connectivity beyond the reach of millions of Americans. For instance, the program is not offered to childless couples or low-income individuals.

A recent analysis of customers in Time Warner Cable’s service area found that of the 4.6 million households that earn less than the amount that would qualify them for the federal government’s free and reduced-price lunch program, only 1.7 million would qualify for Internet Essentials.

The PSC should press Comcast to significantly expand the reach of Internet Essentials and to provide a concrete outreach plan to communities that have low rates of internet use.

Comcast not only has a duty to work to close the digital divide, but also must ensure that the internet remains a place where all people can engage in robust discussion on an equal footing and where the power of ideas, rather than the size of one’s pocketbook, guides the marketplace. That’s why the PSC must carefully examine Comcast’s commitment to net neutrality.

In recent months, Comcast has squeezed additional payment out of content providers, such as Netflix, in exchange for preferential access to its network.

This type of arrangement is concerning, because if fiber-optic networks are up for sale to the highest bidder, it both threatens to undermine the entrepreneurial energy of the internet and could also lead to higher prices for consumers to access content. Simply put: a merger without a commitment to the principles of net neutrality is not in the public interest.

Under a new law signed by Governor Cuomo in April, cable companies must affirmatively demonstrate that mergers are in the public interest in order to secure approval.

As a result, the PSC has a duty to hold Comcast’s feet to the fire and ensure that its proposed merger with Time Warner will not only protect consumers, but will contribute to an internet infrastructure that can support a 21st century economy in all five boroughs.

Microsoft Releases Online Training Portal For Windows Phone

windows phone tutorialNow that Microsoft has announced that they will be doing away with Android and their feature phones, it pretty much means that the Redmond company’s attention will be focused purely on Windows Phone, at least as far as their mobile efforts are concerned. So with Windows Phone pretty much being their only hope for mobile phones, Microsoft has since released a new training portal meant to get users acquainted with the platform.

The training portal is basically a bunch of interactive tutorials along with videos that will guide a person through the use of Windows Phone. For example it teaches them how to arrange their tiles to their liking, how to check for updates, customize the phone’s color, decorate it with photos, and so on.

As you might have recalled, Microsoft had recently launched a training video that teaches users the basic functions of their voice assistant program, Cortana. In any case it’s a pretty interesting idea and a good way for users to explore some of the functionality in Windows Phone without having to try the device themselves. It’s also a great way for new Windows Phone users to get used to the operating system which is very different from the likes of Android and iOS.

So if you’d like to check out the online tutorial, just head on over to Microsoft’s website for the details.

Microsoft Patent Reveals Additional Plans For Augmented Reality

ms augmented patentCould Microsoft be working on an augmented reality pair of smart glasses? Well based an earlier Microsoft patent, it would seem to suggest that is the case, although a newly published patent from Microsoft which was filed for back in January 2014 seems to suggest that Microsoft’s augmented reality efforts could be getting serious.

The patent application is for a “Wearable behavior-based vision system” which according to the description, not only will it be able to recognize real world objects, but it will also be able to predict its behavior. This is actually interesting because we’ve seen Microsoft’s predictive efforts with Cortana which has been pretty successful, so we have to wonder if Microsoft will be able to apply that to augmented reality.

Given the fact that it is a pair of augmented reality glasses, it means that users will be able look around them and observe real world objects, so unlike devices that completely immerse the gamer in the gaming world, like the Oculus Rift of Project Morpheus, users of Microsoft’s glasses will be able to enjoy their games without knocking over items at home.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard Microsoft express interest in wearables. Recently the company revealed their plans for a wearable device designed for the blind/visually impaired which in a way sounds like the current patent, w

iPhone 6′s Display Might Not Be Pure Sapphire After All [Rumor]

A couple of weeks ago, a video had surfaced showing off the iPhone 6’s alleged sapphire display. The display was put through various durability tests, such as bending and scratching to prove its durability. One expert even claimed that the material in the video was the real deal, but a recent video seems to suggest otherwise.

In the new video, Marques Brownlee took the display panel and put it through the ringer once again, this time relying on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. For those unfamiliar, the Mohs scale runs from 1-10, with 10 being the hardest. The concept is that minerals rated below another mineral will not be able to scratch it, so if a mineral was rated 5, it will only be able to scratch those rated 4 and below, and not 6 and above.

Considering that sapphire has been rated a 9 on the Mohs scale, Brownlee proved its durability by using a steel knife which was rated a 5.5. However when he used garnet sandpaper (rated a 7) and an emery sandpaper (rated an 8), he was successful in scratch the display panel, save for the actual Touch ID cover.

Now we know that Apple currently uses sapphire for the Touch ID cover and the lens cover for the iPhone, so with the sandpaper being able to scratch the display panel, it would suggest that Apple might not be using pure sapphire for the iPhone 6. Instead they could be using some kind of hybrid which makes it more durable than its predecessors, but at the same time not as durable as the actual thing.

It is understandable that Apple would choose that route. After all one of the reasons why OEMs aren’t exactly lining up to hop aboard the sapphire bandwagon is because costs would be significantly higher compared to current materials. In any case we have no way of verifying if the panel is the real deal, but in the meantime what do you guys think? Anyone disappointed that it isn’t pure sapphire like the rumors are making it out to be?

Alleged iPhone 6 Lightning Connector Component Leaked

9925 1886 140718 Lightning 2 l 640x444As we inch closer towards the iPhone 6’s eventual release, we have been treated with additional photos of the upcoming device. A recent video surfaced claiming that the iPhone 6’s display will not be made from pure sapphire, and now thanks to a new photo, images of the alleged iPhone 6’s Lightning connector, microphone, and headphone jack have surfaced, courtesy of MacX.

According to the person who posted the photo, they claim to have gotten the component from an old high school classmate who is working in the manufacturing industry in Shenzhen, China. Given that Foxconn has a factory in that area, it just might explain how they got their hands on it, although there’s no way of actually verifying their claims.

That being said, the design of the component appears to be similar to previous iPhones, with the main differences being the extra grounding plates, circuitry, and a cut out above the Lightning connector which is believed to be used as a space saving measure. Interestingly enough it has also been noted that the headphone jack is larger than previous iPhones.

Some have speculated it could be used as a speaker enclosure, but given the tight nature, we doubt that one can expect good quality sound from it, so we guess we’ll just have to wait for Apple’s official announcement to see if they have anything to say about it. Of course all of this hinges on the component being the real thing, so take it with a grain of salt for now, but do check back with us at a later date for the details.

Sony Xperia Z2 Finally On Sale In The US

Sony Xperia Z2 02 640x426Given that both the Sony Xperia Z and Sony Xperia Z1 were pretty good phones in their own right, especially when it came to the camera feature, safe to say that many were looking forward to the Sony Xperia Z2. Unfortunately while the rest of the world had gotten their hands on the handset, over in the US, the device was faced with delays.

Well the good news is that if you’ve been eagerly waiting for the Xperia Z2 to be made available in the US, you might be pleased to learn that the Xperia Z2 has finally gone on sale in the US. Unfortunately it seems that for now, the Xperia Z2 will not be sold by any carrier. Instead if you wanted to get your hands on it, you will have to pay its full price.

Interested customers will be able to pick up the Xperia Z2 themselves via Sony’s US website. The handset is priced at $699.99, which is actually slightly discounted from its original price of $750, so we guess the delay did result in a discount which could be a good thing for some customers.

The Xperia Z2 model that came to the US is the D6503 variant. This means is that if you’re planning on using it with AT&T or T-Mobile, it should work just fine, although those on Verizon and Sprint will be out of luck as this particular variant does not support your carrier’s CDMA bands. Perhaps Sony will release a CDMA version, or perhaps Verizon/Sprint will announce their own models later, but for now you’d be out of luck.

Smartphones Contribute To Meals Taking Longer To Complete

dining texting 001Can you remember what life was like before smartphones? Did we do anything different compared to today? Well obviously there are differences compared from then till now, but did you also know that apparently our eating time has increased thanks to smartphones? One restaurant decided to find out when they received negative reviews on Yelp about how long it took for customers to get a table.

Using a high-speed surveillance system, the company compared footage from 2004 to that of 2014. They found that prior to smartphones, customers would come to the restaurant, spend about 8 minutes browsing the menu before placing their order. The total amount of time for the food to arrive and for them to get the check was around 1 hour and 5 minutes.

However in 2014, it seems that customers who are seated “waste” more time taking photos of the restaurant, and when the waiters were called over, it was more to inquire about the WiFi password as opposed to actually ordering. The average time for the modern diner to order, receive their food, eat it, and pay, was found to have averaged out at 1 hour 55 minutes.

It’s actually an interesting observation and while we know that smartphones has led to us being less social with the people we’re actually hanging out with, who would have thought that it would actually lead to us taking longer to complete our meals! What do you guys think? Do you agree with the observation?

THE QUADRIPLEGIC ROCK STAR

My name is Gerald Christian. I am 31 years old and I currently live in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. My parents are both teachers and growing up, my dad was a coach, so I have been an athlete since I could pick up a ball. By high school, I dropped basketball and baseball to focus solely on my love of football. At age 16, I was 6’3”, 223 pounds, bench pressing 300 lbs., and running a 4.73 second 40 yard sprint. I had several colleges interested in recruiting me, including the University of Florida and Auburn.
But on May 6th of my Junior year in High School, life as I knew it ended in a matter of seconds when I sustained a spinal cord injury after a serious car accident. I was being young and foolish… taking life for granted by drinking and driving as I hit a guardrail and flipped my truck off a bridge. Since that day, I have been a C5-6 quadriplegic– I have no use of my legs, fingers, triceps, and trunk; but I still have my shoulders, biceps, wrists, and most importantly… my mind.
Many people claim they couldn’t live with being paralyzed from the chest down, but I disagree– I feel lucky to be alive. Life is all about overcoming obstacles, accepting challenges as they come, and finding power in times of trial. Being a quadriplegic is no cakewalk. I went through denial, anger, and depression with many dark days. But in those long days, I remembered that athlete mentality and work ethic in me. I became as strong and independent as possible. And my philosophy on life emerged as I learned it takes much more energy to be sad and angry all the time than it does to be happy. In undergrad, I learned that something like 60-70 percent of people who endure spinal cord injuries, become addicted to alcohol or drugs. I am living proof that there is life after a spinal cord injury. I’m writing this in the hope that it brings comfort to someone out there struggling.
Since my accident, I graduated high school with honors, got my bachelor’s degree in psychology and received my master’s in school counseling in hopes to help adolescents through their teenage years. I’ve found my greatest passion in public speaking; and I currently speak at local schools and universities sharing my story, discussing the dangers of drinking and driving, substance abuse, and disability awareness. My dream job would be doing this on a bigger stage helping as many people as possible. In my free time, I play competitive wheelchair rugby for Lakeshore Demolition and it makes me as happy as I was running up and down the football field.
My parents raised me on all kinds of great music, but today music has become one of the most important joys in my life– it’s the greatest medicine and therapy. Everything I have faced and accomplished in the past 14 years as a quadriplegic would not be possible without music–The Beatles, The Stones, but especially the sounds of the greatest band to come out of America– The Beach Boys. For me, their music is truly magical. It’s hard to be upset when you’re listening to songs like Good Vibrations or California Girls. I recently saw The Beach Boys perform on June the 11th in Tupelo, Mississippi and I was excited that honorary Beach Boy John Stamos was on tour with them at the time. He’s such a talented drummer and singer who brings so much energy to the stage. But that night, I learned, he is also the nicest and most down to earth person I have met. Towards the end of the concert, he waved for me to come on stage to join the band and share the mic with him as we sung “Surfin’ USA” before a sea of fans singing along with us. Words really can’t express what that moment felt like– for a few minutes, I got to experience what it’s like to perform before a “full house” of cheering fans. Your adrenaline is pumping, your brain is going nuts, and you’re having a blast without a worry in the world. You forgot that you have a spinal cord injury. In that moment, you’re a rock star.
Even after all these years, it can still feel awkward being the only person in a wheelchair in public. Some people will stare or say rude things, but not at a Beach Boys concert. These guys went out of their way to bring me up on stage. By the time the concert was over, I had a small fan base as I rolled out of the arena. I’ve been to many concerts and met a few celebrities, but I have never experienced this level of kindness or generosity. I hope The Beach Boys and John Stamos understand how thankful I am and how special this moment was for me. It was a true dream come true. Please continue rocking out and touring for the world. If you ever need a backup singer, just let me know.
