Brzezinski: Europe Risks Becoming A 'Satellite' Of Russia If It Doesn't Stand Up To Putin

Former US National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski came out swinging in an interview on CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS show on Sunday. He challenged Europe’s leaders to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin in the wake of the crash of the Malaysian airliner in eastern Ukraine, which US and Ukrainian intelligence believe was shot down by Russian-supplied surface to air missiles.

“My sense is that the European public opinion is aroused,” Brzezinski told Zakaria. “This humanitarian issue is so tragic, so painful, so cruel and so unnecessary that the Europeans are beginning to be moved. But each of the major European leaders has a role to play.

Chancellor Merkel has to face the fact that her predecessor, also a chancellor, was one of the creators of Europe’s dependence on Russian energy supplies. Does Europe want to become a satellite? I think President Hollande has to face the fact that he cannot now, at this moment, be sending advanced arms to help Russia.

Prime Minister Cameron should face the fact that the city of London has become a Las Vegas for Russian financial transactions that are self-serving.

There are responsibilities these leaders have to face and they have public opinions which I think are becoming increasingly aware that this is truly a moment of decisive significance for the future of the system — of the world system.”

Asked whether a new Cold War between the West and Russia was in the offing, Brzezinski responded “We’re not starting the Cold War. He (Putin) has started it. But he has gotten himself into a horrendous jam. I strongly suspect that a lot of people in Russia, even not far away from him who are worried that Russia’s status in the world is dramatically being undermined, that Russia’s economically beginning to fail, that Russia’s threatened by the prospect of becoming a satellite to China, that Russia’s becoming self-isolated and discredited.”

Fox's 'Gotham' Series Will Not Feature Batman, But It Will Include Bruce Wayne

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Yes, the new Fox series “Gotham” will feature a young Bruce Wayne, but don’t expect him to turn into the caped crusader.

Creator Bruno Heller told journalists Sunday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that “If there is a superhero on this show, it’s Gotham.” “To me, heroes are more interesting than superheroes,” he said, “because the difference is superheroes do the impossible, and drama is really about the physically possible. This is about people and people trying to overcome real problems versus trying to learn how to fly.”

“Gotham” stars Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon. Heller says he’s “the moral lynchpin of the show. If you look at the mythology, he’s the guy that creates Batman or gives Batman permission to exist in that world.”

We also meet the future Penguin, future Riddler, future Catwoman and future Joker.

There’s a new villain called Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett Smith. The possibility she will evolve into another character from the story’s mythology was teased at Sunday’s panel.

Season one, says Heller, will focus on the rise of the Penguin, played by Robin Lord Taylor, and his power struggle with Fish Mooney.

“Gotham” is scheduled to premiere Sept. 22 on Fox.

These Photos of Rest Areas Will Make You Want to Take a Road Trip

The rest areas were always my favorite parts of road trips. There was room to walk around and, somewhere, a vending area. I always got lost in the weird maps and wondered who used those curious barbecues. And so when I saw Nicolò Sertorios blissfully barren photo series, I wanted to hop in the car.

Destiny’s Guardians Can Move Between Next-Gen And Previous-Gen Consoles

destiny box art

One of the most hotly anticipated games of this year is now in beta. Bungie’s Destiny, which Activision bankrolled to the tune of $500 million, is destined for release later this year. Right now the beta is up and running for PlayStation and will also go live for the Xbox next week. In its Weekly Update Bungie revealed some information about the title that is likely going to appeal to gamers. Destiny’s Guardians will be able to hop between next-generation and previous-generation consoles.

This means that the gamers’ Guardians can move between a PS4 and PS3 and similarly between an Xbox One and Xbox 360. Though Bungie points out that it would not be possible to move Guardians across product lines. PlayStation to PlayStation will work, PlayStation to Xbox won’t.

Obviously gamers will need to be logged into both next-gen and previous-gen consoles with the same account for this to work. It will help gamers who are currently on previous-gen consoles but would like to take their progress along when they move to next-gen consoles. Play Destiny on the PlayStation 3 right now, take the progress to PlayStation 4 when you buy it. Same with Xbox.

This works because Destiny players have their progress bound to a Bungie account that is linked with a PSN ID or Xbox LIVE Gamertag. It is not specific to one generation of the device, which is what makes hopping across generations so easy.

FIFA 15 Cover Features Clint Dempsey In North America

fifa 15 cover north america

Earlier this month Electronic Arts showed off the global cover for its upcoming title, FIFA 15. Those who had been waiting to see which player EA picked up as the cover athlete were not disappointed, its Lionel Messi. This marks the fourth FIFA cover for Messi who has previously been the face of FIFA Street, FIFA 13 and FIFA 14.  Its no surprise, Messi is ranked as one of the best players in the world, scoring 28 league goals for FC Barcelona in the past season and captaining Argentina to the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals. But on the North American cover of FIFA 15, he won’t be alone.

The North American cover features Seattle Sounders and US Men’s National Team Captain Clint Dempsey alongside Lionel Messi. This cover will be exclusive to the U.S. and Canada.

There will be a subtle difference between the North American cover of FIFA 15 for Xbox and PlayStation. On the former Dempsey will be seen wearing his Seattle Sounders shirt since the team is sponsored by Xbox. On PlayStation Dempsey will be seen wearing his U.S. national team shirt.

Electronic Arts has teased that this is the first of regional covers for its upcoming title, FIFA fans would no doubt be excited to see which players accompany Messi in their particular region.

FIFA 15 will be released on September 23rd, 2014 for PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, 3DS, Wii and PC.

Lindsey Graham Calls John Kerry 'Delusional,' Obama 'King Of Indecision'

Sen. Lindsey Graham expressed his qualms with the Obama administration’s approach to foreign policy during a “Meet the Press” interview on Sunday, calling Secretary of State John Kerry’s foreign policy analysis “delusional.”

Kerry appeared on NBC Sunday morning to discuss the state of foreign affairs amid the escalating conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. He noted that the U.S. is “in the center leading and trying to make peace” in these conflict areas.

Graham snapped back during an interview following Kerry’s appearance, criticizing the secretary of state’s perception of the current state of foreign affairs.

“He gave the most ridiculous and delusional summary of American foreign policy I could imagine,” Graham told NBC.

“It scares me that he believes the world is in such good shape. America is the glue that holds the free world together. Leading from behind is not working. The world is adrift. And President Obama has become the king of indecision. His policies are failing across the globe, and they will come here soon.”

Watch Graham’s comments above.

Though Kerry noted that the president had imposed more sanctions on Russia the day before Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was believed to be shot down by Russian separatists last week, Graham called on Obama to impose sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, chastising Kerry and the Obama administration for not reacting strongly enough to the downed flight.

“He didn’t call Putin the thug that he is, he didn’t call for arming the Ukraine so they can defend themselves against rebel separatists supported by Russia,” Graham insisted. “All of the enemies of our nation are being well supplied, Russian and Iran are helping Syria.”

Graham said it’s “indispensable” that the U.S. lead because the Europeans “never” will. Kerry expressed hope that the incident would serve as a “wake-up call” to some European nations.

Rory McIlroy's Dad Wins 10-Year-Old Bet After Son's British Open Win: Report

It was a big day for the McIlroy family. According to Andrew Cotter of BBC, Rory McIlroy’s father, Gerry, placed a bet with three friends in 2004 that his son would win the British Open before he turned 26 years old.

Gerry’s confidence in his son paid off.

McIlroy, 25, went on to win the British Open on Sunday without ever surrendering the lead or tying throughout the four rounds. The victory means the four will win 200,000 pounds or roughly $341,730, per ESPN.com. That means Gerry and his three friends will each collect approximately $85,432.

As for the star golfer out of Northern Ireland, the prize money for the British Open championship is $1,665,933. It doesn’t get much sweeter than that.

Winning While Losing

On July 13 at the packed Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Lionel Messi was handed the Golden Ball Trophy. It was an award going to the best soccer player of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. But instead of celebrating the joyful moment, he was looking down, crestfallen – a blue man in a blue jersey, in blue mood. His team, Argentina, was defeated by Germany 1-0 in the Cup’s final.

Johan Cruyff in 1974 – Wikipedia

Forty years ago, the amazing Dutch captain Johan Cruyff was in a similar situation. He won the Golden Ball, but the highly favored Netherlands lost the final match to Germany 1-2 at the Olympiastadion in Munich. The German team was awarded the FIFA World Cup Trophy that replaced the old Jules Rimet Trophy. It was the greatest chance for Cruyff and his teammates to win the Cup.

Shortly after the final was over on July 7, 1974, I took the train from Amsterdam to the German town of Solingen where I was scheduled to play an important international chess tournament. The train left Amsterdam in silence. The Dutch passengers were either whispering or didn’t talk at all. But as soon as we crossed the border into Germany, the mood changed. People were shouting, singing, sounding horns. They laughed, cried of joy and drank. Germany was running out of beer that day.

Spassky out, Spassky In

2014-07-20-Spassky.jpg

The tournament in Solingen, celebrating the 600th anniversary of the town, almost didn’t take place. The main attraction was Boris Spassky (photo above), but he was running out of favor in Moscow ever since he lost the world title to Bobby Fischer in Reykjavik in 1972. Almost at the last moment the Soviet Chess Federation decided to cancel Spassky’s participation in Solingen. As a result, the main sponsor Egon Evertz sent telegrams to all players, the Soviet Federation and the Soviet Embassy. He explained that the tournament is being cancelled because the Soviets didn’t keep their word. Within 24 hours Spassky got his traveling permit back and the event was on again.

A series of five wins in the second half of the tournament allowed me to take the lead. The Soviet grandmaster Lev Polugaevsky was the only player who could have catch me with a win in the last round. There were only a few inaccuracies in that game. I decided to play quietly, but in time pressure my temperament got the better of me and I dove into wild waters and drowned in the rapids. With the win, Polugaevsky caught me. Spassky later said I was not being practical in time trouble and it was a good lesson for me, a cheap one since I still tied for first.

2014-07-15-solingen01tab.png

The decisive moment

In his book Grandmaster Achievement, Polugaevsky described the must win situation this way: “You must conduct the game as though it is of precisely no importance, but at the same time instill into each move all of your internal energy, concentrate extremely hard, and attempt to foresee anything unexpected.”

Our game advanced slowly, but the tension rose around move 26. I could have removed my king from the pin along the g-file to the square f7. ‘A practical move,’ Spassky said later. ‘That’s what I would do in time pressure.’ Instead, I charged with my queen to the center, provoking Polugaevsky to go for broke. My intuition told me I could save myself with a knight sacrifice on d5, but I miscalculated the consequences.

Polugaevsky’s last move 27.f4, attacking the black queen, looked like desperation. He decided to force the play because he didn’t see how to break through. Unfortunately, I was short of time and my next move was a blunder. From two squares I chose the wrong one for my queen.

27…Qd4?

I should have gone deeper into white’s territory with 27…Qe3!
After 28.Bxf5 black has two ways how to equalize:

2014-07-18-Polu2.jpg

A. 28…Ncxd5!! I showed Polugaevsky this move after the game. His reaction? “Beautiful, but unbelievable!” It leads to a draw, but I had rejected it because of

29.cxd5

2014-07-18-Polu3.jpg

and I saw that 29…Nxd5 doesn’t make it because of 30.Bxd7 Qc1+ 31.Nd1!! (a winning deflection) Qxd1+ 32. Kf2 and the white king hides easily from checks.

During the game I didn’t see that the attack could be launched from the wing:
29….Nh5! 30.g4 (30.Ne2 Bb5-+) 30…Nxf4 31.Qd8 Qc1+ 32.Kf2 Qxb2+ 33.Kg3 Qxc3+ 34.Kxf4 Qc1+ and the white king can’t escape from the checks.

Other moves after 28…Nxd5!! do not help either:

a) 29.Nxd5 29…Nxd5 30.Bxd7 Qc1+=

c) 29.Ne2 Ne7! and black is better.

d) 29.Bxd7 Qc1+ 30.Kf2 Qe3+=;

B. Polugaevsky gave a question mark to the other move 28…Qc1+?
He thought that it loses but it is perfectly playable.

29.Ke2 (After 29.Kf2 Qxb2+ 30.Kg1 Qxc3 black is better.) 29…Qxb2+ 30.Kd3.

2014-07-18-Polu4.jpg

Polugaevsky thought he was winning because his king could hide, but this was a wrong evaluation, because of 30…Ncxd5!! 31.Nxd5 (31.cxd5 b5! 32.Bxd7 [or 32.Bxg6 c4+ 33.Kd4 Qf2 mate.] c4+ 33.Ke3 Qxc3+ 34.Ke2 Qc2+ 35.Ke1 Qe4+ 36.Kf1 Nxd7 and black should win.) 31…Nxd5 32.Bxd7 Qd4+ 33.Kc2 Ne3+ black has at least a draw.

28.Bxf5 Qxc4+ 29.Kg1 Ncxd5

After 29…Be8 30.Be6 Nxe6 31.Nf5+ wins.

30.Bxd7 Qxf4

White triumphs after 30…Nxc3 31.Nf5+ Kg8 32.Qxf6 Ne2+ 33.Kf2.

31.Qxf4 Nxf4 32.Bb5! d5 33.Nf3 d4 34.Na4 Ne4 35.Ne5!+- Ne6 36.Bc4 Nc7

On 36…Kf6 37.Nd7+ wins

37.Bd3 b5 38.Bxe4 bxa4 39.Bd3 Ne6 40.Bc4 Nf4 41.Kf2 and I resigned.
