12.9-Inch iPad Release Expected Early Next Year

ipad mini retina review front camera 640x426

There have already been many rumors about an “iPad Pro,” an Apple tablet that has a 12.9-inch display however there’s little evidence to support the assumption that it might be released in 2014. A report published today claims that the 12.9-inch iPad is still on the cards but not for this year. Apparently the company is going to release this significantly larger tablet in the first few months of 2015.

This will be Apple’s largest iPad to date. The tablets that it offers currently feature a 9.7-inch display and a 7.9-inch display. Citing “people with knowledge of the matter,” Bloomberg reports that the new iPad is going to have a display measuring 12.9-inches diagonally.

The people cited in this report have not been named apparently because they asked not be identified. What did say that Apple has been working with suppliers for over a year just to develop tablets with larger displays. This is said to be CEO Tim Cook’s effort who is looking to shake up Apple’s tablet line.

The report doesn’t include any information about the specifications of this 12.9-inch tablet or details about its design. It does reiterate recent reports that iPhone 6 launch is slated for September 9th and that two new models with 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch display will be unveiled.

Destiny Doesn’t Feature Item Trading

bungie destiny

Bungie’s Destiny is without a doubt one of the most highly anticipated first-person shooter titles of 2014. Due for release next month the developer has already posted a handful of teaser trailers online, whipping up our appetite for the $500 million game. Many people have asked if it will be possible for players to trade items that they have gained and unlocked. Bungie has officially confirmed that item trading is not possible in Destiny.

David Dague, the community chief of Destiny, wrote that players will not be able to trade items with other players. However they will be allowed to trade items between all of the various characters that they have created. This restriction has been put in place so that players spend time to earn the items, not just acquire them from someone who has already opened them up.

While he was on the subject of Destiny, Dague also confirmed that wherever players move from one location to another they will have to go through the Orbit process. He describes it as an “inescapable wonder of space travel.”

It was also confirmed that the title has gone gold. Discs are being packed in crates which will then be shipped out to retailers and resellers around the globe. Destiny will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 come September 9th.

Archos Unveils Its First Windows Phone 8.1 Smartphone

archos 40 cesium

French company Archos is far from being a household name but still it has been able to release an impressive number of smartphones, tablets and connected devices in the market. With its latest launch it has ventured into yet another uncharted territory for the company. Prior to showing off its new creations at IFA 2014 next month Archos has finally unveiled its first Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone called the 40 Cesium.

The first Windows Phone device from Archos isn’t a high-end smartphone. It has entry-level specifications with a price tag to match, so the most exposure it can hope to get will primarily be limited to emerging markets. Those who are looking for a premium Windows Phone 8.1 experience will be better off with the new HTC One M8 for Windows Phone.

The Archos 40 Cesium has a 4-inch display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 quadcore processor as well as multiple colored rear cases. Details about the connectivity features, rear camera, RAM, onboard storage and much more have yet to be revealed. Its likely Archos will talk more about them when its showing off this device at IFA 2014.

Archos 40 Cesium will hit the market in September for a price tag of $99, making it one of the cheapest Windows Phone 9.1 powered smartphones out there. Its direct competition is the Lumia 530, which is sold by Microsoft, the company behind the Windows Phone operating system. IFA 2014 takes place in the first week of September.

The 2490 Mile Cross-Country Road Trip with HelloWorld (PHOTOS)

Co-authored by Jeff Himmelman and Kelsey Moty.

A cross-country road trip is on the bucket list of most Americans. While we have some incredible sights and landmarks across the country, half the fun of going on road trips these days is sharing the experience with friends and family!

While driving cross-country, recent UC Berkeley graduate Kelsey Moty took and posted photos on HelloWorld, a social app created at Y Combinator’s hackathon earlier this month. The app allows you to keep in touch with friends through proximity-based status posts. Each post consists of a photo, status message, and your approximate location. Michael Carter, Ernestine Fu, Max Goodman, Jeff Himmelman, and David Li are on the hackathon team.

Moty drove from Stanford, California to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania while her friends followed the journey. They shared the suspense of having to call a tow truck when her car broke down in Ohio, to the triumph of finding one of the cheapest gas stations in the nation. Moty made her way through perilous storms and long days on the road before finally reaching the Keystone State.

Check out select photos and posts from the road trip below.

Home. Where's That?

When you’re traveling or on vacation and you meet someone new, one of the first things people often ask is, “Where are you from?”

That’s a question I struggle to answer.

Initially home was where I was born and spent the first 22 years of my life. When people asked where I was from, I had no problem answering that question.

But then I moved, and got my first ‘real’ job in a city where I spent the next 8 years planting roots. This is where I spent my 20’s. It’s where I lived while I figured out who I was as an adult. Even though I didn’t realize it at the time; I did my growing up there: I started my career there, bought my first car and house there, made great friends, met my husband and got married there. It was home.

Until I moved.

My husband and I took a giant leap of faith and left Canada for an overseas adventure. I never, ever thought I’d consider Paris my home. It was so foreign to me that even saying I lived there felt weird coming out of my mouth. Nothing about it felt like home when I arrived.

With my husband gone during the day, I was lonely; missing my family, friends, job and my language. I felt like I was starting my life over from scratch. Maybe that’s why this place became so special to me. Moving to Paris was a growing experience that challenged me in more ways than I can count! I learned to enjoy my own company, to speak French, drive standard, teach yoga, cook real food, drink French wine, and make new friends, all while living in one the world’s most amazing cities. I cried when I arrived and cried when I left; both for different reasons.

Whenever I go back to Paris I can’t help but feel at home. The familiar streets where I spent a part of my life that challenged me more than any other. I feel energized and excited just being in that city.

My most recent move brought me to a place that would once again change my life for the better. The latest place I call ‘home’ began the chapter in my life where I became a Mother. We started our family here and so far, it’s the only home our kids have ever known. It needs no more reason than that to always have a special place in my heart.

With so many homes along the way you’d think the first one would have fallen to the wayside by now. It seems like forever since that was home, but after a recent visit that had me stay the longest I had since I lived there, I realized that it is just as much home as it ever was.

Home isn’t an address, or where you make a rent or mortgage payment. Home is made up of memories and people.

I may miss out on having an easy answer when someone asks me where I’m from, but I feel blessed to have enough places that fill me with happiness to make me struggle with the question.

Home is wherever you make it.

7 Secrets of Seattle

Seattle is renowned as the home of Kurt Cobain, the venti Frappuccino and depression-inducing drizzle (see: Cobain). But it’s also home to the chillest cops in the nation, Eddie Bauer’s iconic down jacket and a weird rivalry with Tacoma. Here are a couple of other Seattle secrets you may have never known:

1. The entire thing burned down in 1889

Seattle didn’t kick-off as an official American city until 1851. The first white settlers attempted to call their landing site “New York.” After hearing that was taken, they opted for “Seattle.” The drastic pivot in nomenclature honored a Duwamish Indian leader named Sealth who had helped them move in.

Talk about a housewarming. Just 40 years into city life, a woodworker’s shop at Front and Madison caught fire and for 18 hours the flames swept southward across 100 acres of Seattle’s business district and waterfront. Donations in excess of $120,000 helped the fledgling frontier city rebuild from the ashes.

2. You Can Find Authentic Mexican Tacos in a Dingy Mall

The Pacific Northwest is not known for its Latin culture, so it’s astonishing to find authentic Mexico City-style tacos in Seattle. More astonishing is where you’ll find them. On the ground level of the Broadway Alley Mall is a smoke shop, a body jewelry store and a sushi bar. But look up. A small foam-core sign dangling from the ceiling reads, “Arriba, arriba, ándale, ándale,” à la Speedy Gonzalez. It points to Tacos Chukis, a hidden restaurant on the second floor. In a small open kitchen a few guys sling wonderfully fresh, savory tacos, tortas and quesadillas. Wash ’em down with a bottle of gem-colored sugar known as Jarritos or the fresher rice milk horchata or hibiscus juice jamaica. Hurry, hurry.

3. The Starbucks Coffee Tastes Better

You know how everyone says that Guinness tastes better in Ireland and bagels are better in New York because of some something-or-other in the water? I didn’t realize a similar myth applies to Starbucks coffee in Seattle. At the franchise on East Olive Street in Capitol Hill, the Colombia Nariño blend has a richer flavor and smoother taste than the bitter blends I’m used to in New York. Also surprising and somewhat enchanting were the glass-enclosed rooms available for rent for meetings or parties. (Who knew some Starbucks even serve wine and beer?)

4. Cops Are Totally Chill About Marijuana Laws, Man

Yes, pot is legal in Washington State, but no, you can’t smoke it anywhere. As with alcohol, you may legally purchase and consume it inside of your own home. That said, the Seattle Police Department isn’t quite enforcing that law. (Remember when cops doled out Doritos at last year’s Hempfest?) A first offence will get you a warning; a second offense will cost you a whopping $27. A June 2014 story in Seattle Weekly quoted the city’s police Sgt. Sean Whitcomb: “The spirit of the law is voluntary compliance. If there’s an opportunity for leniency, that’s preferred.” Groovy.

5. The Roast Beef Sandwich at Homegrown Will Blow Your Mind

It’s hard not to roll my eyes at the “sustainable sandwich shop” with its guilt-inducing waste-bin labeling: Compost. Paper. Landfill.

OK. I get it. Just give me a sandwich.

Worth all of the shaming, however, is Homegrown, a eco-focused eatery inside of Melrose Market. A gauge-wearing, shaggy-faced hippie will slice up a singular roast beef sandwich with raw-milk swiss, pickled red onion, rosemary horseradish aioli and arugula to write home about.

Bonus secret! Stay in the market after recycling your dishes and composting your biodegradable spork to check out Butter Home, a small shop full of farm-chic house wares and jewelry. (I nabbed a pair of “x-stud” earrings by Baleen).

6. The Space Needle is a Tourist Trap. Go Anyway.

It took me a long time to understand what the Space Needle actually is, but like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Unisphere in Queens, N.Y. it’s little more than a show-off structure with an observation tower. When America was in its Space Age phase, we were making things like the Space Needle as a projection of what a 21st century skyline would look like. (Eh, they were a bit off.)

It’s expensive and there’s not a ton to do but walk around and look at the Seattle skyline, but it’s worth it. Like a trip to the top of the Sears Tower or Empire State Building, it’s a nice check off of the ol’ bucket list and provides panoramic scenes to post online.

7. Watson Kennedy is a Preview of Heaven

Who is Watson Kennedy? Such a commanding, stately name. Is he a senator? A business mogul? No, it’s the name of a store owned a man named Ted Kennedy Watson. Ted is the glorious curator and purveyor of beautiful and mostly useless objet. The Pike St. shop is a Seattle must-see for anyone who thrills at a bowl of antique silver bells or a bottle of Belberry fresh lime vinegar. (I unabashedly do.) Each section of this retail wonderland is arranged by color and style. Wander around the clustered vignettes while strains of Dinah Washington’s greatest hits fill the lavender-scented air. That’s one Seattle secret worth sharing.
