Seth Meyers took a break from hosting his late night talk show to emcee the 2014 Emmy Awards in Los Angeles on Monday night.

The host started off with a strong opening monologue, taking a lot of shots at his own network and Mondays.

One of the big highlights was Meyers and Billy Eichner teaming up for “Billy on the Street.”

Then the host opened it up to some audience questions:

Even though a few highlights stood out, not everyone was feeling the humor:

Before the Emmys broadcast, Meyers gave a host of interviews about the prestigious job. “Part of what makes [hosting] rewarding is that everybody knows you’re taking a risk,” Meyers told The New York Daily News. “I don’t think there’s a perception that hosting them is easy.”

In an interview with Vulture, Meyers said that he enlisted Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, his former “Saturday Night Live” colleagues, to help write some of the jokes in his Emmys monologue.

“If they could give me one joke each that would be so awesome,” he said. “It’s almost like you want them to give you a bad joke, so you can be like, ‘I didn’t want to tell it, but Tina Fey …'”

Emmys Best Dressed List: The 2014 Award Show Was Filled With Gorgeous, Ethereal Gowns

We’re not exaggerating when we say that the stars were red hot at the 2014 Emmy Awards. Red was the color of the night with celebs like Heidi Klum, Octavia Spencer and Julia Louis-Dreyfus wearing the rich hue. Meanwhile, Kerry Washington proved that orange really is the new black and Sarah Silverman made a serious case for forest green.

Check out the best-dressed stars of the night and let us know if you agree with our picks.

Heidi Klum in Zac Posen

heidi klum

Heidi Klum finally found a dress worthy of her. First of all, the color is perfection on her complexion. The draping is also spectacular — she looks about 10 feet tall.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

octavia spencer

Spencer seems to always wear Tadashi Shoji — and for a good reason, his designs fit her like a glove. The different fabrics create visual interest, while her statement earrings draw your eyes towards her glowing skin. A+, Ms. Spencer.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Carolina Herrera

julia louisdreyfus

Seriously, has she ever looked better? Louis-Dreyfus’ column dress showcases all her best features, while the thin belt defines her most narrow part. Had this dress not been red it might have fallen a little flat, but this hue is amazing on her skin tone.

Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli

This is how one wears a ball gown on the red carpet. It doesn’t look like it belongs at a prom or at a wedding. Her dress makes a statement, but it isn’t wearing her. The extra touches — like the black bow and pink bodice — ensure that it is appropriate for the 26-year-old actress.

Kerry Washington in Prada

This is a fashion girl’s dress. The strapless orange dress with the peekaboo black embellished skirt is fashion-forward and edgy. It was totally unexpected, but in all the right ways. We are glad Washington is still taking fashion risks — they are certainly paying off.

Sarah Silverman in Marni

Clearly this funny girl takes style very seriously. Her cleavage is impeccable and the embellished belt adds a little something special.

Kate Mara in J. Mendel

Between the asymmetrical skirt, the cut-outs up top and the embellishments around the neckline, this outfit is a real show-stopper.

Julia Roberts in Elie Saab

julia roberts

Those. Legs. It’s rare to see a cocktail length dress on the red carpet, but we’re so happy Roberts took the risk. Everything from the oversized beading to the plunging neckline is so well-thought out — we can’t look away.

Kristen Wiig in Vera Wang

wiig

Silk charmeuse is hard to wear, but Wiig has the body to pull it off. She looks comfortable yet so elegant.

Michelle Monaghan in Giambattista Valli

michelle monaghan

Sometimes, less is more. This dress is so sexy because of its minimalist approach. The extremely high-slit at the front keeps it interesting, but it’s really the expert tailoring that has landed this gown on the best-dressed list.

Lizzy Caplan in Donna Karan

lizzy

We’re not sure what’s better: The back of this dress or the front. The dramatic gown is quite possibly the best of the night. And it’s not wearing her, which is quite a feat.

Emmys' Best Actor In Drama Goes To Bryan Cranston

The Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series goes to Bryan Cranston, for his role in “Breaking Bad.”

Cranston beat out Jeff Daniels, Jon Hamm, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and Kevin Spacey in the category Monday night, Aug. 25. It is his fourth win.

“This is a horrible category,” Julia Roberts joked as she was presenting the award. When Cranston accepted the award he spoke of his love of acting and said, “I can only say that I have gratitude for everything that has happened.” His co-star Aaron Paul also walked away with an Emmy for his portrayal of Jesse Pinkman in “Breaking Bad,” which finished its series run this year. Cranston also thanked show creator Vince Gilligan and the cast. “My dear friend, Aaron Paul, I love you so much,” he said. “To Anna Gunn, my television wife extraordinaire, I love you, especially those scenes in bed.”

Emmys' Best Comedy Is 'Modern Family,' And No One Was Happy About It

Once again, “Modern Family” dominated the Emmys in the comedy categories. The ABC series won three awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The Emmys’ highest honor for comedy shows was the fifth consecutive for “Modern Family.”

“Modern Family” beat “The Big Bang Theory,” “Louie,” “Orange Is the New Black” and “Silicon Valley” for the award. Viewers were not too happy with the result.

Homemade Hovercraft Is The Childhood Fun You Never Had

OK, dads… the bar for awesome has just been raised. A father who goes by the name of “Papa” on YouTube has made a homemade hovercraft for his kids.

And it looks every bit as fun as it sounds.

Papa wrote in the description that he used a polystyrene insulation board, and also posted a clip showing his first effort at a homemade hovercraft.

He appears to be using a rope to steer the thing. And while he doesn’t mention what the motor, ViralViralVideos says he used one taken from a hand vacuum.

Papa is the MacGyver of dads.

Robin Wright's Backless Jumpsuit At The Emmy Awards Is As Sleek As It Is Fierce

We love this look more than a shark loves blood.

Robin Wright, also known as Claire Underwood in the Netflix drama “House of Cards,” made jaws drop at the 2014 Emmy Awards on Monday night in a custom white, backless Ralph Lauren jumpsuit. With slicked-back hair, muted makeup and a Claire-like gaze, Wright was definitely a star on the red carpet.

The blonde beauty is known for her simple-yet-sleek red carpet style, and is once again up for Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series. Although she faced stiff competition in her category this year, we’re already calling this dress as a win for Wright.

The Emmy Awards Objectify Sofia Vergara During A Speech About Diversity On Television

The Emmys took a very troubling turn with a bit that presented Sofia Vergara’s body as evidence that TV throughout the years has known how to present viewers with “something compelling to look at.” As the president of the Academy spoke about, of all things, diversity on television, Vergara spun around on a literal rotating pedestal. On a night in which women already make up only 26 percent of nominees, this kind of objectification did not sit so well with viewers watching around the country.

Many took to Twitter to express their discontent:

Emmys' Best Drama Is 'Breaking Bad' For The Last Time

The Emmy award for Outstanding Drama Series goes to “Breaking Bad.”

“Breaking Bad” beat “Downton Abbey,” “Game of Thrones,” “House of Cards,” “Mad Men,” and “”True Detective” in the category. This was the final season of the AMC show and the Emmys honored stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn with Emmys for lead actor in a drama, supporting actor in a drama and supporting actress in a drama, respectively. Moira Walley-Beckett also won for writing for a drama series for the “Breaking Bad” episode, “Ozymandias.”

“Thank you so much for this farewell to our show,” creator Vince Gilligan said in his acceptance speech. “You have been very kind to us indeed.” “Breaking Bad” was widely predicted to win the coveted award, since it’s been an Emmys favorite for years.
