Samsung Gear Smartwatch With Round Design Being Developed

Samsung already has quite a few smartwatches out in the market and it looks like the company is going with one of the hottest trends in the smartwatch industry right now. Motorola kicked things off by showing its round Moto 360. The design has been appreciated a lot so much so that a handful of other manufacturers are also making similar smartwatches, LG is one of them. A new report published today claims that even Samsung might be developing a Gear smartwatch with a round design.

Sammobile claims to have received information about this smartphone. It is reportedly Samsung’s response to the Moto 360 and the upcoming circular smartwatch from LG. The smartwatch is apparently under development right now and might be unveiled later this year.

Just yesterday we heard a rumor about another Samsung Gear smartwatch which is said to have a curved AMOLED display in a rectangular shape. Samsung’s existing Gear 2 lineup has a square design. The scribe’s source doesn’t say when this circular smartwatch will be released by Samsung but apparently it will take a couple of months after the Galaxy Note 4 hits the market in September.

Samsung is expected to launch the Gear Solo alongside the Galaxy Note 4 next month. Previous reports indicate that this smartwatch will be SIM-enabled, allowing users to make phone calls straight from their wrist.

Facebook Clamps Down On Click-Baiting Headlines

facebook click bait

Over the past few months Facebook has made many improvements to its News Feed in order to ensure that its one billion plus users find posts and links that they are most interested in. The world’s largest social network now has click-baiting headlines in its sights. It has become a common practice on Facebook pages these days to divert traffic to websites by crafting headlines that entice users to click. Some of these headlines deliberately leave out information to get the maximum number of users to click through. Facebook is putting an end to this.

There’s a genuine problem with click-baiting headlines. They don’t necessarily reveal what people will see or read once they click through to the internal website. Scammers can put this to use for their nefarious means. Since these posts get a lot of clicks, engagement increases and the post gets shown to more and more people as a result of it.

This keeps legitimate publishers out who don’t participate in click-baiting, and floods users’ News Feeds with irrelevant posts that they might not be interested in. Facebook says that an initial survey revealed that majority of its users are overwhelmingly in favor of headlines that give them an idea of what they’ll read or see when they click through.

Facebook will use a variety of methods to determine what looks like click-bait. One method is to see how much time people spend away from Facebook reading something they’ve clicked through to. If they go and come straight back the social network will think what they saw wasn’t worth their time.

It will also show fewer of these stories in order to see the ratio of people who click on the content as opposed to those who share it or comment on it. If many users click through the post but fewer like or share it upon their return, it will also be considered as a sign that the post had a click-baiting headline.

Motorola Skip Could Help In Tracking Misplaced Phone

skip new motorola
Last year after unveiling the Moto X smartphone Motorola launched a $20 accessory called Skip. Basically it allowed users to “skip” the lock screen letting them unlock the device with a single tap thanks to NFC technology. Now as the company is on track to launch its Moto X successor it looks like the Skip accessory might be getting a new model as well. A FCC filing reveals that this time around Skip will be able to do much more than simply bypassing the lock screen on Motorola’s smartphone.

The filing reveals that whenever the new Skip and a Motorola smartphone are in close proximity the lock screen will be bypassed. This feature is similar to the first-generation Skip. However the new model appears to have a rather useful feature up its proverbial sleeve.

Tracking a misplaced phone can often be hard, particularly if it gets buried under cushions or simply disappears beneath the pile of papers and books on a desk. Pressing the new Skip’s power button twice will make the smartphone ring so that its relatively easier to locate. This could come in handy when you misplace your phone someplace where you don’t have access to another phone to make a call.

The tracking feature will also work in the opposite direction. Attach Skip to a keychain and use an app to see where the accessory was last connected. Once you’re in range Skip will start beeping thus making it virtually impossible to lose your keys.

Pricing and availability information for the new Skip isn’t available right now but its likely that Motorola might talk about it at the September 4th press event.

Amazon Reportedly Buying Twitch Before Google

twitch logo 640x312

Popular game streaming service Twitch seems to have a lot of high profile suitors. For the past few months now it has been reported that Google is interested in purchasing the service. Last one it was even reported that the Mountain View giant had picked it up for $1 billion however there has been no official confirmation of a sale to this day. Perhaps things haven’t been finalized between Google and Twitch, this might have opened up the door for Amazon which is now reportedly in final stages of talks for an acquisition.

The Information cites a source “close to the transaction,” claiming that talks between Amazon and Twitch are in a late-stage. The online retail giant is reportedly interested in buying the largest video game streaming service on the planet.

Think of Twitch as a service that’s similar to YouTube but its focus is entirely on live gaming. Gamers from around the world can easily create their channels and share live gameplay with viewers from all around the world. At the end of last year Twitch had over 45 million users who watched a 100 minutes of video every day on average.

The report does say how much Amazon is going to pay for Twitch, but if Google’s $1 billion figure is correct, then it would have certainly offered a much sweeter deal. As of now there has been no confirmation or denial of the talks by both Amazon and Twitch.

iPhone 6′s ‘Phosphorus’ Co-Processor Detailed In Leaked Schematics

iphone 6 phosphorus

There seems to be no end to iPhone 6 rumors and reports these days, this stream is likely going to continue until Apple makes the official announcement, which it is expected to do next month. A purportedly leaked schematic of the upcoming smartphone has appeared online, detailing the “Phosphorus” co-processor that will be accompanying Apple’s A8 processor in the iPhone 6.

Last year when Apple showed off the iPhone 5S it explained that the smartphone had a M7 co-processor which processed data from the variety of sensors onboard the device, such as the gyroscope and the accelerometer. The co-processor sends collected data on to the processor, A7 in the iPhone 5S. That’s exactly how Phosphorus will function with the A8 on iPhone 6.

GeekBar, which claims to have discovered the leaked schematics, says that while the M8 Phosphorus co-processors duties will be similar to its predecessor it will collect far more data than the M7. The new co-processor will handle collection of data that includes cholesterol levels, blood sugar, heart rate and more which would then be sent along to Healthkit. The data will be pulled in from accessories and wearable devices which will include sensors for monitoring of health and fitness related data.

The same source has previously leaked schematics which hint at 1GB RAM for the iPhone 6, a 128GB model as well as a Cat.4 modem from Qualcomm. No confirmation from Apple on this as yet so we might just wait until the actual unveil event to find out for ourselves how much truth is there in these schematics.

Burger King Just Coincidentally Gives Away Free Smartphones As Possible Tax-Dodge Deal Revealed

Forget the fries; you can now get a free smartphone with that Whopper.

Burger King kicked off a new promotion Monday, offering customers free Android smartphones with a two-year contract or upgrade with AT&T, Sprint or Verizon.

The phones can be snagged via the Burger King website with the promo code “FREEPHONE.” Customers have a choice of more than 30 devices, including the Samsung Galaxy S4, the LG Optimus G Pro and the HTC One M7.

Samuel Heath, director of revenue management and pricing for Burger King, told Mashable that these phones would otherwise cost between $50 and $150 with a two-year contract.

“We wanted to make sure we took care of all the people who come to Burger King,” Heath told the news outlet of the motivation behind the promotion. “You forget sometimes that only half the people have smartphones.”

He added that the company has an ample number of Android devices in stock — enough, he says, to keep up with the promotion for several weeks.

The timing of Burger King’s new promotion will likely raise a few eyebrows, as its launch neatly coincided with news this week that the company is in talks to buy Canada’s Tim Hortons in an alleged effort to avoid U.S. taxes.

Radina Russell of Brunswick Group, a PR firm that represents Burger King, referred The Huffington Post to Burger King’s corporate offices when asked about the timing of the deal. Burger King did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The jury is still very much out, however, as to whether or not the promotion will sufficiently distract U.S. customers from news of this possible move north.

Already, criticism of Burger King has flooded social media, with some netizens calling for a boycott of the fast food chain. “Definitely will not step foot in a BK ever again,” wrote one Facebook user Monday. “They can’t pay their share then they don’t need my $$$.”

According to the Burger King website, the new smartphone promotion was launched to “celebrate the release of the new Burger King App for Android.” But while customers who get a new smartphone will be encouraged to download the app, it won’t be a requirement.

Fox News Wonders If Calling Michael Brown An 'Unarmed Teen' Is Biased

By now, the tendency of news shows to frame seemingly inflammatory suggestions in the form of a question is well-known. Jon Stewart memorably riffed on what he called the “Cavuto,” named after the Fox News anchor’s love of the tactic.

Monday’s “Fox & Friends” featured a doozy of a Cavuto in a discussion about the media coverage death of Michael Brown:

“Is ‘Unarmed Teen’ Description Misleading?”

mb

Fox News contributor Linda Chavez was the one asking this question. There’s a very easy answer. Michael Brown was a teenager. He was unarmed. Therefore, describing him as an “unarmed teen” is the definition of “factual.”

Chavez, however, thought it wasn’t exactly describing the situation correctly.

“That description in and of itself actually colors the way in which we look at this story,” she said, as if people weren’t supposed to take anything from the fact that Brown was unarmed when he was killed. “We’re talking about an 18-year-old man who is 6’4″ and weighs almost 300 pounds, who is videotaped just moments before the confrontation with a police officer strong arming an employee and robbing a convenience store.”

So, in Chavez’s framing, Brown’s height and weight put him on an equal footing with the man who shot him. She didn’t explain why, if that was so, Brown is dead.
