Google-backed FASTER cable to improve Asia’s Internet

1101-01I hate to say it, but WiFi in Japan is terrible. On a recent trip, even the WiFi I could access was horrible compared to what I am used to stateside. Google may have had the same impression, and have announced they’re investing in a sub-marine, trans-pacific cable that will link Japan to the US. Called FASTER, the aim is … Continue reading

HP Calculator Watch Prototype Goes Up On eBay

hp calcWhen it comes to the world of wearable technology, two particular niches stand out from the rest of the crowd – one of them would be a smart watch, while the other would be a pair of smart glasses. The former has certainly made some interesting strides in the previous year and especially this year, but certainly the grand-daddy of them all should be noted – and we don’t suppose that HP is a frontrunner in this department. What you see above happens to be the HP-01, which is the first calculator watch in the world. Yes, it certainly looks very different from the svelte versions that Casio churned out in the later years, right?

For starters, the HP-01 happened to be huge, really huge. In fact, you can say that the chassis that came in a shade of gold is definitely able to be a firm favorite among rappers of today, and most of it is made out of stainless steel. The asking price for the HP-01 calculator watch prototype? Well, if you happen to have $14,500 sitting somewhere in your bank account, not to mention having to fully trust the eBay seller, then go ahead and own this piece of technological history.

Japan Develops “World’s Fastest Camera”

japan fastest cameraWhen it comes to being Japanese, one of the stereotypes that the world would give you would be this – you carry a camera with you wherever you go. Having said that, the Japanese have certainly managed to make a whole lot of advancements in the field of digital optics, especially where cameras are concerned, and it does not look as though they are about to stop anytime soon. In fact, researchers over at a couple of universities in Japan are currently working on what they deem to be the fastest camera in the world.

These high speed cameras would come in handy to help researchers as well as ordinary folk check things out that would never have been possible, ranging from slowing down some sports action to the mechanical processes. In fact, before this breakthrough was made, the fastest cameras fell upon a pump-probe process as light will be “pumped” to an object that is about to be photographed beore it is “probed” for absorption.

As for the new camera, it will be motion-based femtophotography, which will shoot in single-shot bursts when it comes to image acquisition, hence you will not find it requiring repetitive measurements, and in the end, ends up as 1,000 times faster compared to the previous holder of such a title. Not only that, it is also capable of hitting a resolution of 450 x 450 pizels.

Will we see it hit smartphones and consumer class digital cameras anytime soon? Not likely, but at least this is a yet another engineering breakthrough that is worth reporting on.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Visits The FCC

sony xperia compact z3fccIt was slightly more than a couple of weeks ago that we brought you word on how the Sony Xperia Z3 has arrived at the FCC, and while that is not a promise that the smartphone will eventually hit the market, it is one step closer to reality. What about the smaller version of that particular model? It seems that the much rumored Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, too, will be in the pipeline, considering how it has already hit the FCC.

Having been spotted in the FCC’s database, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact does seem to arrive in a couple of variants, where they will be known as the PM-0810 and the PM-0812. While the two variants do look as though they are but the same handsets at first glance, there is a particular difference, and that lies in the list of supported LTE bands. For the Sony PM-0810, it will support LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 13, and 17, which points it to being an international model, while the PM-0812 will only support LTE bands 5 and 7 enabled, marking this out to be a decent candidate for a carrier-specific version.

Regardless, both models have been confirmed in the FCC filing to arrive with GSM/WCDMA/LTE connectivity, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, ANT+ and NFC support.

Huawei Teases September 4th Event With A Hint Of “7″

huawei teaser 475x640At the beginning of this month, we did mention that Huawei has already sent out invites to the relevant parties that will concern an upcoming 4th of September event, and this time around, it seems that another teaser for the event has arose – sporting a a stark black and white invitation that shows off a rather prominent “7″ right in the middle, making it difficult for anyone to stake a claim that would point to a direction away from either the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 or the D7.

It remains to be seen, however, whether this 4th of September will see the reveal of the Huawei Ascend D3, Huawei Mate 7, or Ascend D7. Ultimately, all that is required from the masses would be a wee bit of patience – slightly more than two weeks down the road, and everything else will be revealed in due time, and there would no longer be any need for any sort of speculations or rumors.

Whatever it is, hopefully Huawei’s release will be a flagship device of note, since it would have some pretty stiff competition to stand up to, including the upcoming iPhone 6 from Apple, and who knows, Samsung might just out their latest iteration from the Galaxy series.

It seems that the alleged device will arrive with a 6” display (with Full HD and QHD variants), 2GB RAM and 3GB RAM respectively, as well as a possible octa-core processor from Huawei themselves.

Missouri Shooting Victim Michael Brown Described As Good-Hearted, Silly

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Michael Brown Sr. stood alone in the center of the narrow street where the blood of his namesake son still stained the gray pavement, two days after the 18-year-old was shot dead by a police officer. He straightened a waist-high wooden cross and re-lit the candles erected as part of a makeshift memorial.

“Big Mike,” as some of his friends called Michael Brown Jr., wasn’t the type to fight, though he lived in a restless neighborhood where police were on frequent patrol. His parents and neighbors described him as a good-hearted kid with an easy smile who certainly wouldn’t have condoned the violence and looting that spread though his north St. Louis suburb following his death. “He was funny, silly, he would make you laugh,” his father said, and when there was “any problem going on, any situation, there wasn’t nothing that he couldn’t solve. He could bring people back together.”

Brown, who was unarmed, was shot Saturday by a Ferguson police officer while walking with a friend down the center of the street. Police have said a scuffle broke out after the officer asked the boys to move to the side. Witnesses say Brown’s arms were in the air — in a sign of surrender — as a white policeman repeatedly shot the black youth.

After a vigil Sunday night, an angry crowd looted stores, and a night later police in Ferguson fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse protesters. The U.S. Justice Department has announced that its civil rights division was opening an investigation, and Brown’s family retained the same lawyer who had represented relatives of Trayvon Martin — the Florida teen killed in a racially charged 2012 shooting. Civil rights activist Al Sharpton was to meet with Brown’s family on Tuesday as tensions remained high.

Brown, who had recently graduated from Normandy High School, had been staying at his grandmother’s apartment, where he would often hang out in the parking lot tossing a football with friends, said Markese Mull, a neighbor whose 17-year-old-son was one of Brown’s closer friends.

Brown was an aspiring rapper, though it was more of a hobby. This week, he was supposed to start college in pursuit of a career as a heating and air conditioning engineer. On the day of this death, Brown had walked with another friend to a nearby convenience store. Mull saw them in the street and honked his horn to say to “hi” — just minutes before the police officer came by.

“He was never a person who liked confrontation,” Mull said. “His smile was going to make you smile.”

Neighbors described Brown as quiet and respectful — a “good boy,” who “was never in trouble,” said Sharon Johnson, 58, who lives just a little ways down the street. Johnson said Brown would frequently stop to chat.

“We talked about how when you turn yourself to the Lord you feel so good — and good things come your way,” Johnson said. “He had a more mature mind than a little boy’s mind.”

On Monday, Johnson was standing at the side of the street where Brown was shot as a woman who had driven in from a nearby community preached loudly to anyone willing to listen about the importance of peaceful protests and parental discipline for teenagers.

A passing car stopped, letting out a man wearing a newly made black T-shirt bearing Brown’s baby picture and the words “NO JUSTICE NO PEACE.”

“I’m his father,” he said somberly, eliciting hugs.

The older Brown picked up a piece of cardboard that had been lying on the ground. “End police brutality,” it read. He placed it on a pile of toy animals stacked by a streetlight pole, then set about straightening up his son’s mid-street memorial.

He had just returned to the grass when a gunshot rang out. Then another. And another. It was time to go.

The One Minute Blog. Robin Williams, Virtuoso

2014-08-12-robin.jpgRobin Williams was a comic genius, but a stirring dramatic actor, as well.

When I heard of William’s death, I felt shock and grief along with the rest of the world. Thinking back on his career, it struck me that his range was unique. It’s rare to find someone who is brilliant in both comedy and tragedy.

The first time I realized William’s penchant for drama was when I saw the movie, “Good Will Hunting,” in 1997.

In the film, Will Hunting (Matt Damon) is a janitor at M.I.T. who has a gift for mathematics. With the help from a psychologist named Sean (Williams), he’s able to reach his potential.

Williams was completely believable as Sean, an earnest counselor determined to set Hunting free from his past.

Hunting’s file reveals he was brutally beaten by his foster parents. In a touching scene, Sean keeps repeating “It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault. It’s not your fault.” We watch how Sean uses the words as a mantra to boldly approach Hunting, refusing to back off until he breaks through. Hunting eventually let’s down his defenses and cries.

I considered William’s performance an anomaly, a departure from the zany comic. He was gifted at making us laugh and cry..

Williams was a complicated man who experienced the full throttle of emotion, from hilarity to despair.

As we say goodbye to this beloved artist, we can keep him close, a touchstone, so we’ll remember to have compassion for others in a struggle.
