Stick-on LED Ambient Light for PCs: AmbiLED HD

This is far from the first Philips Ambilight alternative that we’ve seen, but Flytron set its AmbiLED HD apart by making it much easier to install and adjust. That’s because this ambient lighting system for PCs uses a thin strip of LEDs with a reusable adhesive back.

Like many ambient lighting solutions, AmbiLED HD connects to your computer via USB to analyze the colors being displayed on your monitor and emit similar colors.

The difference is that AmbiLED HD sets you free from managing the cords that would otherwise pile up behind your monitor, because its LED strip only needs one three-pin connector for up to 512 LEDs. To put that into context, Flytron was able to frame a 37″ LCD HDTV with 172 LEDs.

Compare the above image with this one and this one and you’ll see how much more convenient the AmbiLED HD is. The LED strip is also flexible and its adhesive is reusable, making it easy to adjust or move the strip to another monitor.

Pledge at least £60 (~$100 USD) on Kickstarter to get an AmbiLED HD kit as a reward. The kit will come with the USB control unit, a power supply, a USB cable and a 3m (~9.8ft.) LED strip. That should be enough to cover a 40″ monitor, but if you want a longer strip just add £1 (~$1.70 USD) for every additional 10cm (approx. 4in.).

OnePlus One Might Do Away With Invite System This October

oneplus 01 630x640

Earlier this year a nascent company based in China emerged on the scene. It ran a massive hype campaign to raise awareness for what it claimed to be the “flagship killer.” One aspect of that campaign was to limit the ways one could purchase a OnePlus One, so the company only gave out invites in a limited number. It did say at one point that the smartphone might be offered for sale without invites by September. Now though it looks like customers who have been waiting for a non-invite based purchase system will have to wait until October.

In a OnePlus AMAA session on the Android subreddit, the company confirmed that it is looking to do away with the invite system. OnePlus said that it was initially aiming to have the new system in place by September but due to slight delays potential customers will have to wait until October. The company will move away from an invite based system to a pre-order system.

What this means is that customers will no longer have to wait for an invite. Instead they’ll be able to place a pre-order and then wait for the device to be shipped. If all goes well the new system should be in place by October, barring any unforeseen delays.

OnePlus recently launched a social media promotion campaign through which it wanted to dole out invites but that campaign imploded and became the reason for much criticism. Moving to a new system will certainly rid the company of these headaches.

BlackBerry Passport 4K Video Recording Being Tested

passport 4k 640x236

One of the upcoming smartphones that I am particularly looking forward to is the BlackBerry Passport. It is due to be released in September. The Passport is now expected to be BlackBerry’s saving grace since it has seen sales dip continuously over the past few years. It will be interesting to see how this smartphone performs in the market and if its able to win back any lost market share. Another feature that the Passport might have is 4K video recording, according to reports, this feature is currently being tested.

An image tweeted out by @DHabkirk reveals that BlackBerry is tinkering with the idea of adding 4K video recording to the BlackBerry Passport. According to previous rumors the Passport is going to have a 13 megapixel rear camera with auto-focus and Optical Image Stabilization aided by a 5-element f2.0 lens. This might be the best rear camera yet on a BB smartphone.

As per the report, BlackBerry Passport isn’t going to feature 4K video recording when it initially launches in September. It will likely be added later through BlackBerry 10.3.1 OS which may be released a couple of months after the device comes out.

On paper it would be a good feature to have for BlackBerry’s new flagship smartphone even though one can argue against the logic of having 4K video recording capability on a smartphone. Most high-end smartphones have this feature, and if the Passport wants to stand up against them, BB will certainly need all it can get on the spec sheet.

Godzilla Action Figure is Massively Articulated

If you have seen the newest Godzilla movie, you will most certainly recognize this creature. What you see here is a massive Godzilla action figure that measures 2-feet from head to tail. It even has its own roar to scare other action figures into pooping themselves.

This isn’t a cheap toy you would find at Walmart, it’s a highly detailed and articulated collectible with has 13 points of articulation in the tail alone and over 25 points in all.

Want Your Bubble Wrap With Goldfish?

Goldfish Bubble WrapThere is just something about bubble wrap that is alluring — all those plastic bubbles just waiting to be popped. This is especially true of the larger bubbles. The other side of the coin is the people who want to strangle people who are making that popping noise, such as when my brother threatened my life one Christmas. Of course if it was Goldfish Bubble Wrap it might be a little harder to just pop away when it looks like there is a cute little fish in there.

WhatsApp Support For Android Wear Now Out Of Beta

whatsapp blackberry q10

For those who don’t know, Android Wear is a new platform that Google has built from the ground up for wearable devices. A handful of devices powered by this platform have already been released in the market. Developers have supported apps for these devices as well and one of the biggest names to jump on the Android Wear bandwagon was WhatsApp. Today the popular cross-platform messaging service’s app sees the support come out of beta.

Previously WhatsApp support for Android Wear was only available for beta users. The app had to be sideloaded, a process that many novice users might find a bit cumbersome. Now though the support is included in the general release which is easily downloadable through the Google Play Store.

The updated app brings support for entire WhatsApp messages to be displayed on the Android Wear smartwatch as opposed to truncated notifications. It also has support for displaying individual sender’s name during a group conversation. Stacked notifications ensure that users never run the risk of missing out on a message.

It is possible to reply to messages through the smartwatch as well though only voice replies are supported as of now since there’s no native keyboard in Android Wear. The updated app also has improved message storage reliability and the usual slew of bug fixes and performance updates. It is available for download now via the Google Play Store.
