3D Printed Mac Pi Is Worth Checking Out

3dprinted mac piWhile I am quite sure that many of us have come up with our very own computer building projects in the past, how many of us have actually thought about printing a computer that we can call our own? Enter the 3D Printed Mac Pi, where this unique 3D printing project will actually be able to hold a Raspberry Pi as well as carry a 2.8” TFT display. Such a tiny display does not mean that it is a pushover – it is capable of emulating Mac OS 7 in order to run old school Mac Apps, where the open-source design happens to be free to download and modify. If you are interested in picking up the 3D Printed Mac Pi, it would be a decent DIY weekend project for those who are interested in electronics and 3D printing.

Combining the power of Raspberry Pi Model B and a 320 x 240 resolution mini touch screen display, this is a relatively easy-to-build project. You can opt to have a service print out the parts for you, or you can opt to bring your 3D printer out for a spin and do it yourself. It will require some bit of assembly and soldering, and the Raspberry Pi has the ability to run a flavor of minivmac while emulating booting into Mac OS 7. With a Mini vMac emulator which will be able to run software for early Macs which were powered by Motorola’s 680×0 microprocessors, there is no need to own a wee bit of original hardware in the first place.

Microsoft Introduces Windows Update Patch That Was Pulled Earlier On

windows 8.1 updateMicrosoft has decided to introduce, or should we say, reintroduce a patch that was removed earlier this month after that installation of that patch resulted in boot failures. Needless to say, whatever bugs that were in there have been squashed as promised, so all should be smooth sailing from now on – fingers crossed, that is. In the kernel-mode security update KB2982791, there were a trio of known issues, where among them include the locking down of the fonts folder in Windows, the incorrect rendering of system fonts on Windows 8, 8.1, 8.1 RT and Server 2012 R2.

It did not take too long for Microsoft to address these issues, and the revamped patch is now available for those who want a headache-free installation, where it will be released under a new KB number that is called KB2993651. Microsoft has made a recommendation to their users who did install the earlier update to uninstall it, before installing the new one.

Taking into consideration that the Microsoft Support site continues to list the Fonts related issues as being around in this update, which means that Microsoft still has some work left to do, having patched up the seemingly more important system crashes and boot issues. Perhaps in a later update?

ASUS F205TA Could Be A New $199 Laptop

asus 199It seems as though there is going to be a new rival to HP’s yet-to-be-announced $199 Stream laptop, and this time around it would be Taiwanese firm ASUS that has stepped up to the front. French retailer pc21 has put up a product page that showed off an unannounced ASUS device that carries the model number ASUS F205TA.

The asking price for the ASUS F205TA currently stands at 205 Euros, and this will include VAT taxes, so assuming it makes its way across the pond all over to Stateside, the ASUS F205TA might very well retail at the same price point as the upcoming HP Stream laptop. Unfortunately, there were no images of the ASUS F205TA depicted by pc21, and it remains to be seen whether this device itself is a laptop or a tablet, but there are encouraging signs that point to it being a highly affordable laptop device.

After all, ASUS has a history of using the F2xx model number when it comes to describing their laptops instead of tablets, and with 4GB RAM thrown into the mix, it is definitely a whole lot more compared to the budget-style Windows-powered tablets. Other hardware specifications that have leaked point to an Intel Atom Z3735F Bay Trail processor, 32GB of internal memory, an 11.6” display with Windows 8.1 with Bing software. Who knows, we might even see it make an appearance over at IFA 2014 early next month.

Apple Injunction Against Samsung Devices In 2nd California Patent Trial Denied By Judge

ziilabs samsung appleSamsung and Apple still have a fair number of court cases to work it out between them, but in the second California patent trial, the judge had denied Apple’s injunction against Samsung’s devices. U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh handed down this particular order, which meant that Apple’s motion to put into motion a sales ban against Samsung products is thrown out of the window.

In the order that relates to the second Apple v. Samsung court trial in California, it showed that Apple failed to adequately demonstrate how Cupertino as a company suffered from irreparable harm, and there were no ties that could be made to have been harmed by Samsung’s infringement of their trio of granted patents.

Judge Koh’s order read, “Apple has not established that it suffered significant harm in the form of either lost sales or reputational injury. Moreover, Apple has not shown that it suffered any of these alleged harms because Samsung infringed Apple’s patents. The Federal Circuit has cautioned that the plaintiff must demonstrate a causal nexus between its supposed harm (including reputational harm) and the specific infringement at issue. Apple has not demonstrated that the patented inventions drive consumer demand for the infringing products.”
