Dustin Johnson Taking Leave Of Absence To 'Seek Professional Help For Personal Challenges'

By Jeff Rude, Golfweek.com

Long-hitting Dustin Johnson, an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour, said in a statement Thursday that he is taking an immediate leave of absence from competitive golf to “seek professional help for personal challenges.” The PGA of America said it was informed that Johnson would be unable to play in the Sept. 26-28 Ryder Cup.

The world’s 16th-ranked player, who withdrew from the WGC-Bridgestone Championship earlier this week, said “by committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion.”

He asked fans and news media for “privacy as I embark upon this mission of self-improvement.”

Johnson’s departure is a blow to the underdog U.S. Ryder Cup team. His leave is believed to be a long-term project (months rather than weeks) and thus won’t allow him to return in time for the matches against Europe in Gleneagles, Scotland.

He ranks fifth in points and was a lock to make the team. The top nine in points through next week’s PGA Championship will qualify, and captain Tom Watson will make three picks to fill out the 12-man roster. Without Johnson, the 10th person on the points list will make the team. Patrick Reed, a three-time winner over the past year, is 10th, but the standings could change dramatically at the PGA.

“We will certainly miss Dustin Johnson at Gleneagles, and we wish him the best,” Watson said in a statement. “As one of the longest hitters in the game with an undefeated record of 3-0 at Medinah in 2012, he has clearly been an asset for the United States team. That said, the United States is a team with an abundance of talent. I am looking forward to teeing it up alongside those players in the PGA Championship at Valhalla, and finding out along with everyone else, which players qualify for the team based on points.”

Johnson’s departure comes six days after he missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open and less than two weeks after he tied for 12th at the British Open, where he fell back on the final day.

Johnson has several top finishes on Tour this season and ranks fourth in FedEx Cup points. He won the WGC-HSBC Champions last October and finished second at the Northern Trust Open and tied for fourth in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, N.C.

Johnson also took a break from the Tour in 2012, not playing from March 11 to May 31.

Apparently he plans to spend plenty of time with fiancee Paulina Gretzky during the sabbatical. She posted an Instagram photo Monday of her putting and Johnson lining up the putt while crouched behind her. Her caption read, “Best caddy ever.”

In a statement, the PGA Tour said, “We have nothing to add to Dustin’s statement, but we wish him well and look forward to his return to the PGA Tour in the future.”

Associated Press reported that Jerry Kelly gets into the PGA Championship as a result of Johnson’s leave.

Here is Johnson’s complete statement, sent via email to media by David Winkle of Hambric Sports Management:

“I am taking a leave of absence from professional golf, effective immediately. I will use this time to seek professional help for personal challenges I have faced. By committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion.

I respectfully ask my fans, well-wishers and the media for privacy as I embark upon this mission of self-improvement.”

What Makes Jesus Mad as Hell?

Jesus was angry. Children who wanted to see him were being turned away.

Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me,

he warned his disciples and then shocked them by adding,

but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

This is not the

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild

as described in the poetry of Charles Wesley. This was Jesus, mad as hell, threatening capital punishment for anyone who caused children to stumble. Interesting word, stumble. Scholars suggest

that causes to stumble

can be understood as

become an obstacle to belief.

In other words Jesus warned his disciples:

When you undermine or weaken or destroy the faith of my children you deserve to die.

Unfortunately, with few exceptions, current leaders of the 2.5 billion Christians worldwide have forgotten the story (even though it’s repeated in Matthew, Mark and Luke). They are the 21st century counterparts of those 1st century disciples yet they don’t seem shocked or personally alarmed by Jesus’ warning. Why is that? Don’t they understand that 2,000 years after Jesus spoke those words that they too are standing in the way of the children who want to see Jesus?
In this case, I’m referring to the young gays and bisexuals (13 to 24) who have just learned that in the past decade their diagnosed HIV infection rate has risen by 132% while all other demographics have seen a 33% decline. Warning! Before we get back to Jesus, millstones and his 21st century disciples let’s guess what those same Christian clergy think when they see that gay and bisexual youth and young adults are the only U.S. population where HIV is on the rise. They’ll say what they said in the 1980s and 90s when the plague was first discovered. “It’s a gay plague,” they said. “We have no reason to feel blame. It’s their unsafe sexual practices that caused the rise.”
It is a mistake to blame “unsafe sexual practices” for the grim statistic but we can’t ignore those sexual practices either. Once again we need to rally our community to confront the problems of

condom fatigue,

(the decreased and irregular use of condoms); of

prevention fatigue

(the growing apathy towards safer sex campaigns); of the increasing acceptability of alcohol, methamphetamine, nitrates and other party drugs that lead to risky sexual behavior; of not being tested for the HIV virus on a regular basis; and of not being treated immediately when the virus is detected.
However, it isn’t enough to help end the unsafe sexual practices. There is another even more important factor to consider, unsafe religious practices. With very few exceptions, clergy and lay leaders representing 2.5 billion Christians worldwide are still defending their tired old beliefs that homosexuality is a sickness and a sin, beliefs based on biblical misuse and scientific ignorance. Those beliefs cause God’s LGBTQ children to stumble. They weaken, undermine and destroy faith and not just faith in God but faith in themselves as well.
The Christian-religion-based misinformation campaign can have equally devastating effects on young gay and bisexual men with no interest in Jesus or in the Christian churches. Religion-based anti-homosexual beliefs poison the well of information about homosexuality and homosexuals from which the entire nation drinks. Here’s the connection between these dangerous Christian beliefs and the rise of diagnosed HIV cases among gay and bisexual youth and young adults.
The Aids Healthcare Foundation (treating 300,000 HIV/AIDS patients in 33 countries) warns us that behind the unsafe sexual practices that lead to the rise of HIV infections is the

high level of stigma youth face in their communities.

The key word here is

stigma.

The young men who practice unsafe sex are victims of unsafe religious practices that stigmatize them for being gay and further stigmatizes the disease that threatens them.
That stigma keeps them from understanding that their sexual orientation or gender identity is a gift from God to be accepted and celebrated and lived with integrity. That stigma keeps them from healthy gay relationships and leads them to sexual practices that are secretive and often destructive. That stigma keeps them from being tested and treated for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. That stigma keeps them from speaking honestly with their sexual partners even when they know they are positive. That stigma leads directly and indirectly to the rise of HIV infection rates and that stigma is without doubt a direct result of the anti-homosexual teachings of Christian leaders in the U.S. and abroad.
Have they forgotten what made Jesus mad as hell? Maybe some entrepreneurial lesbian will find a way to manufacture and market miniature millstones we could place on the desks of clergy to help them remember the consequences of undermining or weakening or destroying the faith of God’s children. They need to be reminded of their direct and indirect responsibility for the alarming rise of HIV infections in God’s gay and bisexual children, especially among African-American and Hispanic teenagers and young adults. Above all they need to be reminded forcefully that they must end the debate that has gone on for five decades and instead of making it just a slogan like the United Methodist Church, they need to actually open their minds, hearts and doors to God’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer and Questioning children. And if they don’t? Let’s hear Jesus’ words again:

Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

5 Things to Know About Starting Your Own Business

When I was first starting out in my business, my day looked something like this:

Wake up and grab my iPhone. Check emails before finally rolling out of bed. Throw my hair into a messy bun and put on a pair of old sweats. Grab a cup of coffee and eat breakfast at my living room table in front of my computer. Check email, freak out, feel totally lost as to what I should actually do, more coffee, still in sweats hunched over my computer when my fiancé came home. Skip workout, make dinner and talk about my business. Go to bed with iPhone.

NO. FUN.

Worse than no fun, it was completely unhealthy. I wasn’t treating my body with respect, I wasn’t treating my relationship with respect, I wasn’t treating my work with respect and I certainly wasn’t treating myself with respect.

Thankfully, I’ve learned a few things over this journey. The flow of my days, quality of my work and sense of fun and meaning in my life look very different now than they did when I started.

So I want to share with you what you need to know if you’re starting your own business.

1. Get dressed up, even if no one is going to see you.

This has been a game-changer in my life and business. You may think wearing pajamas to work sounds like a dream come true, but believe me, after a few weeks of that it’s more like a nightmare. It doesn’t boost your confidence, help your business or your relationships. Now, even if I’m going to be working at home all day, I always make a point to shower, put on a little makeup and dress myself in an outfit that makes me feel fabulous.

2. Become friends with marketing.

If sales and marketing conjures up images of sleazy cars salesmen, it’s time to re-frame the way you think about it. When I first started my business, I wasn’t comfortable with marketing. But if you believe in what you’re doing and know it will help others, than think about it as a means to simply help more people in the most effective way possible.

3. Move past your resistance.

As a new entrepreneur, you will meet resistance. I work with a lot of clients around moving past fear, procrastination and resistance. It may come in the form of standing in front of the fridge wondering how you got there, endlessly checking Facebook or frantically responding to email rather than working on that big project. Any of these have the same two things in common: fear and doubt. Fear will come up, but that’s okay, take it as a signal pointing you in the direction you need to go.

4. Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you.

We are the product of the people and environment we surround ourselves with. If you surround yourself with people who tell you that you are going to fail, or are broke themselves, that is much more likely to happen to you. Instead, surround yourself with people who uplift, support and inspire you. Maybe even people who are one, five or ten steps ahead of you.

5. Don’t work 24/7.

I can’t stress this enough. As a new business owner it’s easy to get carried away with working all the time. And well, it gets old. When I first started my business my fiancé was getting so annoyed with my talking about work 24/7, we instated a date night where neither of us were allowed to talk about business. And boy, was it refreshing! More recently, my mom sent some old pictures of me at the age of 12 bouncing on our trampoline in the back yard. It made me smile remembering how fun life can be when you incorporate play into it. So close the computer and get outside to play!

Launching a business is a marathon, not a sprint. There are going to be surprises, hardships and times where you downright doubt yourself. Stick with it and remember the amazing gift that only you can give to this world.

6 Freshman Year Essentials You Didn't Know You Needed

by Nikki Kong

I like to think that there are two types of girls in this world: those who are packed and ready to go weeks before move-in, and those who keep telling themselves they only need three boxes and two days to get everything done. I won’t bore you with the details of which type of girl I am (*cough* the second one) but let’s just say I was missing more than a few things when I moved into the dorms freshmen year. So you can avoid (at least some of) the same mistakes as me, here’s a list of six things you’ll definitely need this year.

Lysol Wipes
I’m going to be real with you: dorms get dirty. Drinks will be spilled, germs will be spread, and ice cream will inevitably be dripped during your first “The Notebook” binge of the year. All of that is totally fine (I mean, who wouldn’t drip some ice cream during that lake scene?) but it’s always nice to have something a little stronger than a damp paper towel from the bathroom to clean up your messes.

Planner
Planners are sooo middle school, right? Um, wrong. If you weren’t already planning on using some kind of planner –- digital or otherwise -– consider investing in one. As much as we’d all like to think we’re the kind of girl who can remember everything without writing it down, we probably can’t. You’re on the quarter system now: with midterms every few weeks, it’s hard to keep all your dates straight. Get a planner with a daily and monthly calendar so you can see what you need to accomplish each day, as well as what you need to accomplish each month. Seriously –- don’t let that economics midterm sneak up on you and force you to cancel beach day with that cute guy from your floor for a day of cramming in the library!

Small Fan/Extra Blankets
More often than not, you and your future roomie are going to have different ideas of what a “comfortable temperature” constitutes. Having a small fan and extra blankets can come in handy with it’s 90 degrees and your (literally) cold-blooded roommate is freezing and refuses to turn on the air conditioner. Even if you and your roommate can agree, some dorms don’t have air conditioning. SLO doesn’t have too many unbearably hot or cold days, but you’ll be grateful if you’re prepared for them when they do happen.

Musician Plays Wrong Wedding, World Does Not End

A piano player sits down at a white baby grand piano, stretches his fingers and begins to play as guests file in for a June wedding. Once the bride is ready, he plays a wedding march as she walks down the aisle. Bride meets groom, rings are exchanged, kisses and cheers complete the ceremony.

A perfect day? Almost. Only one problem….

It was the wrong wedding.

In another atrium in the same venue, a bride walked down the aisle in complete silence. The rooms were nearly identical — same fabric-draped ceiling, same gleaming white floors, same crystal chandeliers. The weddings — completely different. Different colors, different styles, brides and grooms of noticeably different races.

2014-08-01-weddingmixupgigmasterhp.jpg

Unfortunately, one of those couples was significantly less happy at the end of the day. A groom trying to surprise his bride with a special wedding gift was bitterly disappointed, and another couple was left scratching their heads at the mystery piano man who stuck around after the ceremony to play along with the DJ.

The wronged couple told us (the team here at GigMasters) what happened. We all felt for the bride and groom. Even as we received reports from everyone involved, we wondered how something like this could go so very wrong. We advise both vendors and planners to confirm and reconfirm with each other. Both sides claim to have done just that.

But, both weddings had one thing in common: they both ended with a marriage. Kisses, smiles, and best wishes all around.

Your wedding is the official first day of your lives together. No matter what happens, the day will still go on; the bride will walk down the aisle — whether she’s accompanied by music or Aunt Clara’s throat-clearing. Wedding disasters happen, but they rarely stop a bride and groom from tying the knot.

If you have a wedding mishap, don’t let it ruin the first day of the rest of your lives. The bride and groom set the tone for the celebration. If you cry into your veil all night, your guests will wallow too. You can all mope over takeout any day. But today, you’re buying dinner! Choose to smile, take your partner’s hand, and make the best of the situation.

On my own wedding day, I had a severe case of strep throat. I could barely sip my custom white Cosmo (requested by me so I wouldn’t stain my wedding dress). But when dinner was over, I kicked off my shoes, smiled big, and danced my bustle loose. It was a great party.

My illness was only revealed by our late arrival to the post wedding brunch. My groom and I were delayed because I had to go to the ER to get antibiotics. No one even realize I was sick. I refused to let this one detail derail my big day.

Every day of our lives is a gamble. It can be blissful, or it can be a disaster. Wedding days are no exception to this rule, and things may go wrong. As a bride or groom, you must hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. And if the worst does happen, consider yourself lucky — now you have a partner to go through it with you.

We Can Hardly Recognize Joe Biden In This #TBT Pic

Vice President Joe Biden seriously stepped his Instagram game up Thursday with his latest #tbt.

Biden posted a photo of himself in his mid-20s to encourage those #Bornin88 to visit healthcare.gov and get covered.

“For all the 26 year-olds → short sleeve button-downs are making a comeback, but health care has never gone out of style. Don’t forget to #GetCovered,” the caption reads.

Biden wasn’t the only one to use Throwback Thursday as a way to spread the message about health care. The vice president’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, posted her own #tbt to Twitter:

Jada Pinkett Smith Talks About That Willow Photo And Her Marriage To Will

Jada Pinkett Smith is opening up about family life in the public eye in the new issue of Net-a-Porter’s The Edit.

Smith addresses the “controversy” surrounding a photo of her 13-year-old daughter, Willow Smith, lying on a bed with 20-year-old former Disney Channel star Moises Arias.

In May, she told a TMZ videographer: “There was nothing sexual about that picture or that situation. You guys are projecting your trash onto it and you’re acting like covert pedophiles, and that’s not cool.” She remains just as protective today.

“Just don’t pollute something that’s not dirty,” Pinkett Smith told The Edit. “It’s really tough. I feel like the connection to the value of women on a bigger scale has decreased tremendously. Even though you look and go, ‘Women have so many opportunities,’ it’s like, ‘Yeah, but at what cost?’ Are women valued for being women, or are women valued when they have more masculine qualities? Men and women encompass both female and masculine energies, but it seems like when the feminine is present, it’s not respected.”

Pinkett Smith has not only had to field tabloid fabrications about her children, but also about her marriage to Will Smith. Despite split rumors and speculation about their “open marriage,” the actress says her relationship with her husband is stronger now than ever. In fact, she says “calling him ‘my husband’ is too small of a word for what he means in my life.”

As for the gossip, she shrugs it off.

“The coping technique is knowing what the truth is –- there’s no better technique,” she said. “When you know that what’s going on in your house is so the opposite [of what’s being said], and you also know that when there’s mystery, people fill in the gaps, that’s okay. And then you look back at it and look at how creative people can be, and it’s kind of entertaining. We can laugh because it’s so ridiculous. But I get it. I don’t take it personally.”

Israel Censor Wants To Pre-Approve New York Times Coverage Of Soldier

NEW YORK — The Israeli military told The New York Times on Friday to withhold publishing additional information about an Israeli soldier reportedly captured by Palestinian militants until it is first reviewed by a censor.

The Times acknowledged the order in an article Friday on the abrupt collapse of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

After the initial publication of this article, the military’s censor informed The New York Times that further information related to the soldier would have to be submitted for prior review. Journalists for foreign news organizations must agree in writing to the military censorship system to work in Israel. This was the first censorship notification The Times had received in more than two years.

The Times added the new paragraph nearly six hours after first publishing the article, according to Newsdiffs, a site that tracks changes in news stories online.

A Times spokeswoman did not have any immediate comment on the paper’s handling of the censorship notification.

The Israeli government recently issued a media gag order related to the killings of three Israeli teenagers and one Palestinian teenager, violence that helped lead to the current conflict. While the news media faced restrictions, the Times’ Robert Mackey wrote that “a vigorous, at times frightening, public discussion of the killings has continued online based on rumor and leaks used by partisans of both sides to indict their enemies.”

Israeli officials blamed Hamas for abducting the Israeli teenagers, though some intelligence officials have now expressed doubt that Hamas was involved. The resulting war has led to the deaths of nearly 1,500 Palestinians and 56 Israeli soldiers.

In April, the Times acknowledged withholding news that a 23-year-old Palestinian journalist had been arrested because of an Israeli court-imposed gag order. At the time, Jerusalem Bureau Chief Jodi Rudoren told Times’ Public Editor Margaret Sullivan that the paper is “indeed, bound by gag orders.”

Sullivan wrote that Rudoren “said that the situation is analogous to abiding by traffic rules or any other laws of the land, and that two of her predecessors in the bureau chief position affirmed to her this week that the Times has been subject to gag orders in the past.”

Still, some of the paper’s top editors said they didn’t know the Times abided by such restrictions.

Both Dean Baquet, who was then managing editor and has since been promoted to executive editor, and Susan Chira, a former foreign editor and current assistant managing editor, told Sullivan they “were unaware of The Times ever agreeing to abide by gag orders in Israel,” she wrote.

Jes Baker's TEDx Talk Tells You To Change Your World, Not Your Body

“We put our life on hold, we stunt it, because of our bodies.”

That’s the startling truth blogger and speaker Jes Baker shared in a May 2014 TEDx talk. Speaking on the topic of body love and self-acceptance, Baker reveals that most 10-year-olds are more afraid of getting fat than getting cancer or losing both of their parents. People put off things as small as buying new jeans and as important as asking for a raise until they’ve lost that weight, believing their bodies aren’t good enough as is. Her conclusion? Something’s gotta give.

“The creation of this presentation happened the moment I realized that loving your body could have international impact,” Baker told The Huffington Post in an email. “I spend countless hours researching the larger issue of bodies, talking to medical professionals, and getting my statistics straight. And the beautiful thing that [comes] out of it [is] a clear understanding that body love [is] a global necessity.”

Baker’s reasoning? That body insecurity hinders personal and professional productivity — and so the world is a better place without it. In her own words, “the way we view our bodies determines the way we participate in the world.”

Baker began blogging as a way to share her personal journey of acceptance, with the hope of creating an inclusive body-love community.

“We are definitely in this together, no matter your size,” Baker told HuffPost. “Every single one of us resides in a society that profits from telling us that we are not enough. It’s powerful to know that you share in this; it makes it easier to refuse the status quo.”

As for what you can do to start your self-love journey, watch the full video above to find out.
