There is a lot of discussion about Apple’s two new iPhones, where we are almost certainly getting a 4.7-inch screen, then a 5.5-inch model later on. There is another hotly anticipated product lineup coming out this Fall, though, in Google’s Nexus. We’ve heard a bit about the Motorola Shamu being the new Nexus, but could you handle two Nexus smartphones? … Continue reading
Google Glass gets Pandora app
Posted in: Today's ChiliGoogle Glass now has Pandora support, giving the wearable another option for streaming music playback. The new Glassware pipes Pandora’s ever-changing custom radio playlists to the headset, complete with support for starting a new channel or picking from a preexisting one. As with any Pandora app, there’s also support for shaping the playlist by marking it thumbs-up or thumbs-down. That’s … Continue reading
Microsoft has a well-documented history of trolling Google. Prior attempts at throwing shade on the search giant have revolved around things like privacy in Gmail, and Google’s scanning of your communiqué for their own good (sarcasm on my part, of course). A new promotional Surface tablet, meant as an announcement of the PC-killer launching in several new countries, might just … Continue reading
Kobo Aura H20 Launched
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt looks as though using modern day mobile devices might need some toughening up these days as the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2 from Sony has proven by offering waterproof capability. As for e-book readers, now this is one particular niche product that one would not really find for it to require waterproof ability, but Kobo has decided to go ahead and launch the Kobo Aura H20 that will set you back by $179.99 a pop, although it delivers waterproof ability – at least being able to be submerged in a metre of water for up to 30 minutes without drowning, as long as the port cover remains closed, of course. Do take note that this would also place the Kobo Aura H20 as a prime candidate for the ice bucket challenge.
Apart from that, the Kobo Aura H20 will also come with a dustproof design and an antiglare display, making it possible for you to get some reading on a digital platform done even when the sun is up and at its brightest.
Michael Tamblyn, president and chief content officer of Kobo, shared, “When we asked our customers what held them back from reading more ebooks, many told us they love to read in the bath, by the pool or on the beach, but believed that devices and water didn’t mix. As we dug deeper, we found that more than 60 per cent of customers surveyed said they would love to be able read near water without worry.”
Features of the world’s first waterproof e-book reader include a 6.8” HD display with 265dpi, touchscreen ability with upgraded Carta E Ink technology, and a battery life of up to two months, which is rather impressive, really. Pre-orders are already available, but it will go on sale this coming October 1st.

About two months ago T-Mobile made its uncarrier 6.0 announcement. At the event the carrier unveiled its Music Freedom program which allows subscribers to stream music from supported services without having it impact their data bucket. This program allows T-Mobile subscribers to stream as much music as they want without having to worry about running out of LTE data. Today T-Mobile has announced the addition of six new music streaming services to the Music Freedom program, offering subscribers even more variety of streaming services.
AccuRadio, Black Planet, Grooveshark, Radio Paradise, Rdio and Songza are now supported by the Music Freedom program. Anyone who subscribes to these services can now stream music from them, they will not need to worry about running out of data or having to pay overage charges.
The carrier recently conducted a social voting poll allowing fans to decide which service it should add next to Music Freedom. “Three-quarters of a million people” are claimed to have voted with majority of the votes going in Google Play Music’s favor. T-Mobile has confirmed that it is going to add Google Play Music to Music Freedom “later this year.”
Services that are already supported by this program include iHeartRadio, iTunesRadio, Pandora, Rhapsody, Samsung Milk and Spotify. The carrier says that it wants to add “every possible music streaming service” to Music Freedom. Services which want to sign up for this program can apply though T-Mobile’s open submission process.

Windows XP is dead, long live Windows XP. Well, it looks as though there is still some life left in the legs of the Windows XP operating system from Microsoft where updates are concerned, although this time around, it would not be on an official basis. Earlier this April, Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows XP at long last, and while they have continued to issue critical patches and a security patch for IE, those are the exceptions than the rule. Taking into consideration how close to a quarter of PCs worldwide still run on Windows XP, a developer who goes by the moniker ‘harkaz’ intends to address this issue with what is known as the ‘Unofficial Service Pack 4‘ for Windows XP.
This is a labor of love by harkaz since September last year, where it will deliver all of Microsoft’s official XP updates and patches into a single unified release. Right now, the ‘Unofficial Service Pack 4′ happens to be in its third beta but, fret not, a Release Candidate is in the pipeline before the full release.
Basically, harkaz claims that the ‘Unofficial Service Pack 4′ is “a cumulative update rollup for Windows XP (x86). It can be applied to a live Windows XP system with SP1, at minimum, installed or it can be slipstreamed (integrated) in any Windows XP installation media.”

We all know how China does roll out a fair number of consumer electronics devices that look like the real deal, but costs just a fraction of the original. In fact, when it comes to smartphones, one might want to check out their offerings since those tend to offer plenty of punch where hardware specifications are concerned after taking into consideration its price point. The IUNI U3 is one such prime example, as this 5.5” smartphone will cost just $325 after conversion, so hear me out on the specifications.
For starters, the IUNI U3 will run on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset that can be found in the Lenovo Vibe Z2, LG G3 or the HTC One M8, not to mention dual SIM capability, 3GB RAM, a whopping 32GB of internal memory, which can be further augmented via a microSD memory card slot. Not only that, there is also a 13MP camera with f/2.0 aperture at the back alongside OIS, as well as a selfie camera in front. 4G LTE support, Corning Gorilla Glass, Android 4.4 KitKat and a 3,000mAh battery rounds off what this powerhouse carries.
Surely a smartphone of this caliber ought to see release in markets other than China? After all, there will always be folks who are on the lookout for the performance of a Ferrari while paying the price of a Ford.

Asus ZenWatch Video Teaser Released
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe company had first confirmed a few months back that soon it will launch an Android Wear based smartwatch. Asus will offer it at a competitive price in order to undercut the likes of Samsung Gear Live and the LG G Watch. The company has already been generating hype for its upcoming wearable device and today it has posted a short teaser video online, giving us a glimpse at its first Android Wear smartwatch.
While this teaser does not reveal the smartwatch’s design, it appears that the Asus ZenWatch isn’t going to have a round design, which appears to be all the rage these days. Asus might stick with the tried and tested square or rectangular design for its new wearable device.
Motorola is the first company that showed off its round Android Wear smartwatch. The design is likely to be appreciated by consumers because the wearable device actually looks much more like a traditional timepiece. Now LG is believed to be working on a similar product of its own, and so is Samsung.
Asus has already planned a press conference for September 3rd. It will finally show off the ZenWatch and all of its other products at IFA 2014, which takes place in Berlin next month.

T-Mobile, the Un-carrier, has made the headlines yet again by announcing the launch of a couple of new smartphones that will arrive later this fall from the folks over at Alcatel. Basically, the Alcatel Onetouch Fierce 2 and Evolve 2 will be making their way over the T-Mobile and MetroPCS, where both of these devices were specially designed for folks who want to get the best bang for their hard earned buck, all without having to subject themselves to the whims and fancies of a lousy phone network. That rules out flagships like the LG G3 and Galaxy S5.
From September 10th onwards, you can pick up the Alcatel Onetouch Fierce 2 for $0 down over at T-Mobile, before settling for a monthly $5.25 fee for twenty-four months on the Equipment Installment Plan (EIP). The Fierce 2 might be extremely affordable, but this does not mean it is unable to deliver a worthy performance as this 4G-enabled device sports a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, and a 5” qHD display.
Those who are on the lookout for an entry level device will be able to check out the Alcatel Onetouch Evolve 2, where it too, will arrive on T-Mobile on the same day for $3.30 a month for twenty-four months on EIP. This is a 3G device that comes with the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, has a 4” WVGA touchscreen display and a 5MP camera. Any takers? [Press Release]
