Facebook Cross One Billion Installs On Android

facebook logo

If we come down to sheer numbers alone then Android has a significant lead over iOS, its closest rival which comes in as the second most popular mobile platform out there. A few months back it was formally announced that over one billion devices around the world are now powered by Android. Google’s own apps have passed major milestones on Android but Facebook is first non-Google app to have achieved over one billion downloads on the mobile platform.

It was really a question of when this would happen and not if it would happen. One can understand why Google’s apps are popular on Android devices, and given Facebook’s massive user base, it was only fair to presume that if any other app was able to pull this off, it would be from the world’s largest social network.

Facebook itself has over one billion users around the world that access the social network through various platforms, including mobile. Previously the apps that have been able to achieve this milestone are Google Maps, YouTube and Gmail. Facebook’s app is the fourth in this list.

It will be interesting to see which app crosses this major milestone next. Some expect that it would be the Facebook Messenger app that’s already crossed 500 million installs. Given that Facebook is now forcing users to download the Messenger app, the numbers may go up rapidly. WhatsApp is also following close behind with half a billion downloads as yet on Android. Let us wait and see which app wins this race.

Google Maps Gets Destiny Planet View

bungie destiny

Gamers around the world are anxiously waiting for September 9th, that’s when Bungie’s Destiny finally gets released. A lot of hype has already been created for this title, primarily because of the fact that it cost Activision some half a billion dollars. However Bungie isn’t going to stop promoting its new title. The developer has teamed up with Google Maps to present the Destiny Planet View. Its a fictional version of Google’s popular mapping service that’s set in Destiny’s fictional world.

If you simply can’t wait for Destiny to be released, like me, then you’ll really like Destiny Planet View. The website created for this purpose gives visitors a chance to browse around the three main locations that are featured in Destiny.

The Moon, Mars and Venus can be explored using a Google Maps interface that’s set in the future. This is something really unique that Bungie has done in collaboration with Google because a video game has never been “mapped” with the help of Mountain View.

Admittedly visitors will only be able to view a fraction of Destiny’s vast open worlds, something that Bungie prides itself on. Nevertheless it will be possible to visit different areas and explore gameplay tips, lore as well as hidden real-world and in-game incentives. The Destiny Planet View website can be accessed from here.

Legend of Zelda in Microsoft Excel: Excelda

Microsoft Office 2000 had a racing game Easter egg that can be unlocked through Excel. But Excelda is no secret. It’s a port of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening made with Visual Basic and Microsoft Excel.

YouTuber GamesExcel started the port because his friend bet him that it couldn’t be done. What do you say now, unnamed friend! Although to be fair the game is a bit buggy, has no sound and is far from finished. GamesExcel shared it online March last year and it seems he wasn’t able to complete the game.

Wake the Wind Fish and download Excelda from 4shared. It will work with Excel 2002, 2007, 2010 and 2013 on Windows.

An Egg Spinning Contraption That Pre-Scrambles Them In the Shell

It turns out the term ‘pudding’ has different meanings all over the world. In North America it’s usually a creamy dessert treat, in the UK it’s a soggy bread mess, and in Japan it’s a pre-scrambled boiled egg that’s drizzled with caramel sauce. And now the Japanese version is a lot easier to make with this whimsical looking spinning contraption from Takara Tomy.
