Ouya Reportedly Seeking Acquisition By Chinese Companies

ouya console underperforms 640x530

Back in August 2012 Ouya emerged on the scene. This startup wanted to create an Android gaming console of the same name. The project got a lot of traction on Kickstarter and its campaign ended up raising over $8 million. The console ultimately came out and Ouya even decided to try its luck by diversifying through a move into software. Its no secret though that things haven’t gone exactly as planned. Ouya is now reportedly in talks for an acquisition, Chinese companies are believed to be involved in discussions with it.

Apparently Ouya is looking at an acquisition as a possible alternative to raising more money. Re/code claims that it is in talks with “multiple big players in China,” and while talks are said to be proceeding, Ouya doesn’t seem to have an offer on the table as yet.

Among the companies reportedly showing interest in Ouya are Chinese behemoths Xiaomi and Tencent apart from others based down in the People’s Republic. Ouya may also be looking for a suitor in the U.S., the scribe claims there has been “some engagement” with the likes of Amazon and Google.

Sources indicate that even if an acquisition goes through it would be more for Ouya’s talent as opposed to its product. Ouya has been contacted for a comment by the scribe but it is yet to issue a statement regarding the stage of talks and the possibility of an acquisition offer in the near future.

Meixu MX4 Goes Official

meizu mx4Well, well, after seeing results of its benchmark leaked out prior to today, as well as the back part of the handset get caught in the wild, here we are with China-based Meizu having officially rolled out the Meizu MX4 smartphone. This particular model will not offer a wee increment in performance and capabilities, but rather, it will deliver an improvement by leaps and bounds, starting with its 5.36″ IPS display that has 1152 x 1920 resolution and Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Meizu claims that the display on the Meixu MX4 would be the first of its kind in the industry, where it will merge a trio of key features; namely 1100:1 contrast, 500cd/m2 brightness and 85% NTSC color gamut. With an aspect ratio of 15:9, the bottom row of extra pixels will see action thanks to Meizu’s very Flyme 4.0 OS when it comes to on-screen controls, which still leaves room for the entire 1080p resolution where apps are concerned.

Other hardware specifications for the Meixu MX4 include a MediaTek MT6595 chipset that has an octa-core CPU with a quartet of Cortex-A17 cores @ 2.2GHz, while there are also another four Cortex-A7 cores @ 1.7GHz cores. A quad-core PowerVR G6200 GPU will chug along nicely with 2GB RAM. Apart from that, there is a 20.7MP Sony Exmor RS sensor with dual-LED dual-tone flash, with a 2MP front-facing camera that ought to cater for selfie lovers.

Connectivity options for the Meizu MX4 comprise of Cat.4 LTE, 3G with HSPA, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0. You can choose from 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, where a 3,100mAh Sony battery will run this bad boy. Expect it to cost anywhere from €225 to €300 for the Meizu MX4, depending on its internal storage space. While one can pick it up in China, there is still no word on a worldwide rollout.

New Motorola Moto G Box Spotted (Rumor)

moto g2 boxThe Moto G from Motorola proved to be quite the winner for the company itself, as it has been declared to be the most successful smartphone from Motorola to date (yes, even being more popular than the hot selling RAZR range in the past). What do you do with a smartphone that has quite a following? Why, you roll out a sequel, that’s what. On your right, your eyes would chance upon what is deemed to be a leak of an alleged Motorola Moto G box – the new one, and not the old model.

While there is no official name attached to the upcoming Moto G handset, some folks have decided to call it the Moto G2, although you can be sure that some confusion is guaranteed to arise with the LG G2 being yet another smartphone in the market.

Apparently, the alleged box’s photo was captured within a warehouse of the Indian online retailer Flipkart, and it does look as though there are more than enough boxes available to go around when launch day arrives. This does not sound surprising, since Flipkart was the only Indian e-tailer to carry the original Moto G in the past, although one should not read into the situation too much and claim that the same modus operandi would apply to Flipkart this time around.

Sonos Cuts The Cord With New Software Update

sonos bridge

In its mission to make listening to music at home as easy as possible Sonos today released a new free software update which cuts the cord for good. The update adds full Wi-Fi compatibility meaning that Sonos music streaming systems can now connect directly to a home Wi-Fi network. Previous Sonos required that there at least be one wired connection to a home router for the multi-room music streaming system to work. That requirement has been removed with the latest software update.

With Sonos 5.1 users will be able to set up and run Sonos on existing Wi-Fi networks easily. They will no longer need a wired connection to a router or a Sonos Bridge. This change makes the process simpler and a lot easier, not to mention the fact that it also makes the process faster.

Sonos promises that this will not result in a loss of quality. It still claims to have the ability to stream music throughout the house without delays, dropouts or echoes. Sonos says that it has tested performance of various kinds of home environments around the world to ensure that performance of the new Wi-Fi setup meets the standards users expect of it.

However in environments where Wi-Fi signals are not likely to reach every nook and cranny of the house, Sonos recommends using a previous method with at least one wired connection to the router for the “most bulletproof experience.”

The free Sonos 5.1 update is available for download now.

iPhone 6 Sapphire Display Will Be Limited To 64GB Model [Analyst]

iphone 6 1

I am sure that a lot of people like me are anxious to see what Apple has in store for us next week. The company has confirmed that its going to hold an event on September 9th where according to popular reports it is finally going to unveil the iPhone 6. There has been no shortage of rumors regarding this smartphone. A full crop of rumors about the iPhone 6 having a sapphire display has already made its run in the rumor mill but today an analyst claims that Apple may make the sapphire display exclusive to only the 64GB model of the iPhone 6.

It needs to be mentioned that there are conflicting reports regarding the usage of sapphire for iPhone 6 displays. Some have even claimed that displays made from this material won’t be used in iPhones until 2015.

Folks who are in support of sapphire displays say that its more robust, scratch resistant and shatter proof as opposed to Gorilla Glass that’s currently used in iPhones.

According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster Apple is going to kick things off with the sapphire display touting 64GB iPhone 6. It will look at the initial response before deciding whether or not the entire iPhone lineup has to be moved towards sapphire displays within the next two years.

As per Jaffray’s figures the sapphire display alone could make the larger iPhone 6 account for up to 30 percents of all units sold of the iPhone 6. This particular report doesn’t talk about whether or not this 64GB model will be of the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6L. No word from Apple as yet on any of this.

Reddit iOS App For AMAs Released

Reddit probably has one of the most loyal user base of any online property, which also happens to be one of the most diverse. There’s a section on reddit that’s known as AMA or Ask Me Anything. Here celebrities, scientists, professors, politicians and others hold their sessions where they get to interact directly with reddit users. A new reddit iOS app has been released today just for AMAs, the aim is to make reading these threads much more easy.

Whenever someone particularly intriguing is conduction an AMA session on reddit the thread tends to go out of hand. Uncountable questions are posted and obviously not every single question gets an answer. Moreover other users jump in between with their hilarious comments often laced with pop culture references that those who are only interested in the AMA questions and answers only are left with having to do quite a bit of scrolling.

The new reddit iOS app for AMAs changes the game. This app can be used to filter out the questions that have not been answered by the person conducting the AMA. Basically this means that users can read the entire question and answer session as if they were reading an interview on a conventional online property.

For now the reddit iOS app developed just for AMAs is available on iOS only, the Android version is expected later this week.

Nokia To Build Test 5G Network

nokia headquarters logo sign 001 630x472Right now, many mobile carriers have already jumped aboard the 4G LTE bandwagon, although having 4G LTE signals wherever we go is not going to be all that commonplace just yet, as 3G continues to reign supreme – for now. Does this mean that whoever are behind such communications technologies are going to rest on their laurels and think that 4G LTE speeds are more than enough – not only for today, but for tomorrow as well? Nokia Networks – or at least the segment of the company that has a well-established networking unit, has decided to come up with a test 5G network which ought to get those of you out there who always want to adopt the latest and the greatest drooling in anticipation.

This test 5G network is going to be built in Oulu, Finland, some time early next year. Nokia claims that as there is progress being made where the data transfer test network is concerned, Nokia will be generous enough to share the APIs with invested partners as well as competitors, no problem at all. This apparent “generosity” is due to the final aim of achieving a new collaborative model. Sounds like a win-win situation to us, as it would most probably translate to a lower number of competing standards that could possibly arise from such a situation.

So far, we have heard that South Korea has already readied 5G, while the Mayor of London has promised 5G connectivity in London itself before 2021, not to mention NTT DoCoMo working to test out 5G technology themselves, as Japan wants to launch a 5G mobile service by 2020.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Price Leaked (Rumor)

samsung logo 640x389While the world looks on in anticipation where the Apple iPhone 6 is concerned, do remember that there are other players in the market as well, and it looks as though the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 too, will cause quite a stir when it is released. This is a high end phablet, and apparently its price has already been spotted on Media Markt, which so happens to be the world’s second largest electronics retailer right after Best Buy. If you have not heard of Media Markt before, that is all right, since it is the top electronics retailer in Europe, and the Galaxy Note 4 pricing has been spotted in the Russian branch, which does look as though it will be similarly priced to that of its predecessors during the launch period.

In other words, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is not going to come cheap, so you would be well advised to start saving up if you would want to upgrade your current smartphone or phablet to the latest model.

The Russian pricing points to the region of 34 490 rubles, which is more or less $940 after conversion without taking carrier subsidies into consideration. If one were to follow the general rule of thumb that electronics prices in Europe – Moscow in particular, happen to be 20-30% higher, when could be be looking at a $750 launch price or the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Stateside?

Fake Cell Phone Towers Could Be Used To Eavesdrop On Android Devices

cell phone towersThe next time that you walk past a cell phone tower, you might be want to be a little bit more wary if you so happen to be talking on your smartphone at the same time – especially if your smartphone runs on the Android mobile operating system. This is what Les Goldsmith, CEO of ESD America and developer of the CryptoPhone 500, has warned the masses about. Goldsmith mentioned that his team, having used the custom-developed CryptoPhone that offers a hardened version of Android while boasting a wide range of unique security features, managed to pick up dozens of fake cell phone ‘towers’ that are not property of any carriers, but rather, they intercepted the device’s signal.

In other words, the cell phone tower’s owner can then intercept any calls or communications within the vicinity, not to mention having the ability to push spyware to the device remotely.

To prove their point, they went on a road trip from Florida to North Carolina, where the device managed to come across 8 different interceptors. That does not sound too shocking, until one takes into consideration that baseband interceptors happen to be extremely expensive to produce and difficult to create, so that only those who are extremely committed to the cause, or is flush with cash, can produce them. There was a similar interceptor at a casino in Las Vegas, although plenty of these interceptors were discovered to do the top of military bases and government facilities.

LG works alongside Swarovski to deliver premium OLED TV

lg-swarovski-curved-oled-tvSouth Korean consumer electronics giant LG has decided to team up with famous crystal manufacturer Swarovski to come up with what they deem to be the ultimate premium OLED TV, as though having a curved OLED TV in the first place is not good enough. The normal curved OLED TV already costs a bomb, and when you throw in luxurious Swarvoski crystals into the mix, you can be sure that this particular combination is going to cost you quite a lot where your bank account is concerned.

This unique partnership between the two companies would be a one-of-a-kind piece of home entertainment hardware that will turn heads for sure the moment they step into your living room. It will be showcased at IFA Berlin that is set to kick off later this week, where the TV itself will boast of a streamlined stand studded with shimmering crystals that are complemented by the brilliant, precise colors of the OLED’s self-lighting pixels. In other words, this uniquely advanced TV will exude a sense of elegance that is beyond compare.

Not only that, the curved OLED TV itself is already an engineering marvel by its own right, sporting a paper-thin depth of a mere 4mm while tipping the scales at just 16kg. It might be rather difficult to concentrate on the movie that is being shown though, as the curved OLED TV showcases Swarovski’s finest crystals, leaving your Gollum-like eyes to wander after your “precious”. Basically, around 460 luminescent Aurora Borealis crystals of three different sizes (SS8, 10 and 12) were applied (by hand, no less) to the TV thanks to specially made stencils.

No idea on pricing, but this particular curved OLED TV with Swarovski crystals all over the place will adhere to the following rule of thumb – if you have got to ask, you can’t afford it!
