Google Hints At ‘Several’ Big Updates For Android Wear This Year

Samsung gear live face notif 03 640x426

The wearable device trend has picked up a lot of stream this year and Google fanned the flames at I/O a few months back by unveiling a completely new platform that has been developed from the ground up for wearable devices. It is called Android Wear. Many smartwatches powered by Android Wear have already hit the markets and others are bound to pour in soon. Google retains strict control over the software experience and has said that “several” updates are planned for the platform which will hopefully be released within 2014.

Android Wear’s engineering director David Singleton told CNET in an interview that several updates for Android Wear will be released by the end of this year. The first such update is destined to roll out this week. Not only will the updates bring stability and performance improvements they will also include some new features as well.

Some of the features that Singleton has detailed include the ability to pair an Android Wear smartwatch with a Bluetooth headset. Those smartwatches that have GPS built-in will be able to track user’s fitness sessions based on geolocation data.

Even though some developers have come up with ways to develop their own watchfaces, over time Android Wear developers will be allowed by Google to develop watch faces of their preference with features like stock prices or scores from a sports team front and center in the display.

Google’s vice president of engineering for Android says that the company aims to improve the Android Wear software as fast as time permits. Since updates don’t have to go through a carrier its a major hurdle that’s clear of Google’s way. It can directly push updates and cut down on the time between release cycles.

BlackBerry Passport To Be Formally Unveiled On September 24th

blackberry passport event 640x230

The wait finally comes to an end for BlackBerry fans. When the company showed off its upcoming flagship earlier this year it said that the formal announcement will take place in September. At the time no concrete date for the event was given. Today though it has been confirmed via the official BlackBerry blogs that the event for the announcement of BlackBerry Passport has been scheduled for September 24th.

BlackBerry’s previous flagships, the Z10 and Q10, were unveiled back in January 2013. The event was conducted in six cities around the globe. This time around the company is cutting down on venues. The invite-only event will take place in Toronto, London and Dubai on September 24th.

Those who have been following technology news over the past few weeks would be well aware by now that September is going to be a good month for tech lovers. This week we have IFA 2014 in Berlin where many new mobile devices are expected. Apple follows up with the new iPhones and perhaps the iWatch on September 9th. Then BlackBerry fans are in for a treat on September 24th.

The company itself has revealed many details about the BlackBerry Passport up till now, including features like its touch-sensitive trackpad and personal digital assistant. At the event BlackBerry may talk about the detailed specifications of the Passport and may also unveil its price, which many BB fans are undoubtedly waiting to find out.

Samsung SM-A500 Benchmark Appears

Samsung A 500 specs 523x640It looks like there is more than meets the eye to the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, where this particularly stunning looking smartphone might just be the template, so to speak, of a new A-series that will include the following models: SM-A300, SM-A500, and SM-A700. In fact, the middle of the trio, the Samsung SM-A500, was also caught in a GFXBench benchmark database, which in turn enabled curious eyeballs to see what the possible or potential hardware specifications will arrive with the Samsung SM-A500.

Apparently, the Samsung SM-A500 will arrive with a 720 x 1280 pixels resolution display with 4.8” of viewing goodness, doing away with a 4.7” panel. Underneath the hood of the SM-A500 would be a quad-core 64-bit-capable Snapdragon 410 processor that gets the job done, never mind that it is not the most powerful Qualcomm chipset out there. Apart from that, a 12MP camera at the back will have a possible 4.7MP camera in front, with 2GB RAM and 8GB of internal memory to boot. Expect Android 4.4.4 KitKat to arrive right out of the box, although we do look forward to seeing Android L make an appearance in due time, too. Could this be the larger Galaxy Alpha variant after all?

Alleged iPhone 6 Snapshots Spotted

iphone6leakimageMuch has been said about the upcoming iPhone 6 from Apple, especially when you take into consideration that it ought to be introduced to the masses some time later this month. Well, someone has already sent out some photos of the upcoming iPhone 6, where it shows off the hotly anticipated iPhone 6 (or at least, this is what we have been led to think after checking out the image on the right) that has been turned on, showing off the iOS lockscreen along the way.

It remains to be seen whether this would be the white or gold version of the iPhone 6 (after all, the white balance does play trick on the eyes sometimes). Other than that, there is also a space gray variant for the upcoming iPhone 6.

Other hardware specifications do point to a 4.7″ IPS LCD display at 960 x 1704 pixel resolution, 2GB RAM, a dual-core 2GHz 64-bit processor with the Apple A8 chipset, as well as a very real possibility 128GB of internal storage making its debut with this particular iPhone generation. There ought to be a couple of screen sizes as well, with a 5.5” model on its way that will feature an extra durable sapphire display. So, do you think that this is the real deal, or a hoax?

Scribble Pen: Real or Not?

For many, Scribble seemed like the best thing since sliced bread. It was a pen that could copy the color of absolutely anything simply by pushing its built-in scanner against an object. The pen could then be used to write in the scanned color on paper or on a tablet, since a stylus and ink pen version were in the works.

After months of anticipation, Scribble launched on Kickstarter on August 11th, quickly raising over three times its fundraising goal – only to have the project creators pull the plug and cancel it two days later.

In between requests for tech specs, delayed responses, and features that seemed to change after every few hours, Kickstarter apparently reached out to the Scribble team with a request for a video showing the prototype. Unable to comply with Kickstarter’s 24-hour deadline, the creators cancelled the project with nary an announcement prior to doing so.

This led to already-skeptical backers questioning the existence of the prototype, with some wondering if the creator really had the tech and engineering knowhow to turn the pen into a reality. Just several days ago, the project was relaunched on Tilt, with the comments box tellingly removed from the page.

This brings us up to date. Drop Kicker recently posted discrepancies on the new video that Scribble posted on Tilt, and ex-backers have continued the discuss the shadiness on the project’s original Kickstarter page. It’s pretty clear that the pen shown in the video is not a working prototype, but only a mockup, and post-production and editing trickery was used to make it look like it was drawing.

How everything unfolded is extremely disappointing, considering I, along with many, backed the project when it went live. But you be the judge: do you think this project is a scam? Or do you still believe they can make it happen? With nearly $200,000 raised on their Tilt project, it seems that many out there still support it.

P.S.: Here’s a worthwhile alternative if you’re just interested in the color sampling capability: the Mozbii.
