BlackBerry Passport Screenshot Shows Off Impressive Battery Life

passport battery life 2 710x434 640x391The BlackBerry Passport is the Canadian company’s upcoming handset and it seems that there is plenty to be excited for. Not only does the handset sport a rather unique design and an interesting keyboard, but according to its specifications, it is also expected to pack an impressive 3,450mAh battery under the hood.

Given that most Android handsets these days fall under the 3,000mAh mark, safe to say that the Passport will most definitely lead the way when it comes to battery life, but exactly how long are we looking at? Well according to N4BB, one of their friends who has the Passport sent in a screenshot of their device.

As you can see in the image above, it shows that despite the phone being at 73%, it has been estimated that there is about 1 day and 8 hours left before it requires a recharge. It’s also interesting to note that despite 6 hours of it being unplugged from its charger, it has only used 27% of its battery.

Of course we can’t be sure if this was when the phone was left idle or if there was some heavy usage, but safe to say that a 3,450mAh battery is pretty big compared to most smartphones these days. So what do you guys think? Anyone planning on picking up the Passport from themselves?

Vortex VR Uses The LG G3 For Its Virtual Reality Headset

vortex vrThere are a couple of virtual reality headsets being developed at the moment. One of them is the Oculus Rift and the other would be Sony’s Project Morpheus. Neither of these devices are available commercially yet but if you’re looking for an alternative virtual reality headset, perhaps the Vortex VR VRTX I could be of interest to you.

One of the differences between the VRTX I and other headsets available in the market at the moment is that it does not come with a built-in display. Instead it seems to rely on the user having an LG G3 handset of their own whose display will be used as the display of the headset as well.

Given the high-resolution display used in the LG G3, we guess it does make sense that the folks at Vortex VR have gone with the handset instead of something else, although it does limit its market as not everyone has an LG G3. The headset has also been 3D printed thanks to a collaboration with GameFace Labs and 3D Systems.

According to David Haines, the Chairman and interim CEO of Vortex VR, “This is the mobile VR experience everyone has been waiting for, and with our technology partners, GameFace Labs and 3D Systems, we have been able to rapidly bring to market a mobile case and device with technology that has been developed to best leverage the Android OS, along with the powerhouse of hardware within the LG G3.”

No word on when the headset will see a commercial release, but developers interested in checking it out can place an order for it via Vortex VR’s website for $99.99.

Elgato Smart Power Is A Smart External Battery Pack For Mobile Devices

elgato battery 640x426There are many external battery packs available for smartphones and tablets at the moment. For the most part they are pretty “dumb” in the sense that you just plug them in and it starts charging, nothing more, nothing less. Then again there’s nothing wrong with that setup since it is just a battery after all.

Well if you were hoping for something a little more intuitive, Elgato has recently unveiled the Smart Power external battery pack. The battery pack will come with a 6,000mAh battery that should be able to charge your smartphone a few times over, and will measure 83 x 83 x 23mm and weigh 160g.

However what makes the Smart Power so different is that it will be able to keep track of your phone’s battery life and can remind users when to start charging their phones. This is done using a Bluetooth connection and an accompanying app. The app will also be able to access your calendar to see if you have a busy day coming up.

If it notes that you do, it will then remind you that perhaps taking an external battery pack with you might be a good idea so you don’t run of juice mid-day. Priced at 89.95 Euro, Elgato’s Smart Power is currently available for purchase via its website.

Samsung Gear S Gets A Swarovski Crystal Makeover

gear s blingJust yesterday we reported that LG and Swarovski had teamed up to offer a crystal-studded OLED TV. Well it looks like Swarovski has been pretty busy because they had also teamed up with the folks at Samsung by creating a blinged up version of the recently announced Samsung Gear S smartwatch.

The smartwatch from Samsung was announced last week and we expect that we will most likely hear and see more of it at IFA 2014 later this week. We’re not sure if the Swarovski version of the Gear S will be on display at IFA 2014, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for it.

According to Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, IT & Mobile Division at Samsung, “One of the key aspects in wearable devices is providing diverse options for consumers to freely express their own taste and style. Our ongoing collaboration with Swarovski as demonstrated in the new Gear S Strap, allows us to stay ahead of trends and on the cutting-edge of design and style.”

No word on how much this blinged out version of the Gear S will cost, but according to Samsung, they expect that the watch will be available for purchase this October either via online or at one of Samsung’s experience stores. We have to admit it’s a little gaudy but if you wanted to jazz up your outfit, perhaps it could get the job done.

Destiny For Xbox One Could Take Up 40GB Of Storage

destiny1 640x359Heads up Xbox One gamers, we know many of you guys are looking forward to getting your hands on Bungie’s latest game, Destiny, and if you’re the sort of gamer who keeps every single game they play on their console’s hard drive, well here’s hoping you have enough space to install the game in full.

According to one user who has received their copy of Destiny a little ahead of time, he/she has posted images of the cover art of Imgur and according to one of the photos, it shows that the game could take up as much as 40GB on your console in order to play it. For those who have preloaded the game, you might have noticed that it has only taken 18GB.

This is far from the 40GB of storage that has been suggested on the box. There is a good chance that the 40GB storage could be the recommended storage space for save files and other content that the game might require for installation. There is also the possibility that the 18GB install on the Xbox One might only be enough to run the game at the start and that additional content will be downloaded while you play.

Either way for those who are worried that Destiny might not have enough content, it is safe to say that 40GB would seem to suggest that Bungie has a lot of content prepped for the game that they might not have shown off in the alpha and beta releases, but either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information.

BBC Launches Coding Initiative, Teaches Kids How To Program

bitesizeWhen we went to school, we are taught basic skills in a variety of subjects, such as math, language (this will vary depending on which country you’re in), science, history, and so on. However it seems that many, including President Obama, believe that computer programming is the way of the future.

While computer programming courses have long been offered and taught in colleges and universities, they were mostly optional and for people who wanted to get into those fields. However like we said, some believe that programming is the way of the future and that it should be made a necessity to learn them at an early age.

Well the BBC has recently decided that they agree with that opinion as they have recently offered coding lessons via its Bitesize website, which for those unfamiliar is a website that teaches children other core subjects as well. The course will include a number of interactive games and online guides to help children learn the basics.

They are also expected to introduced tech-themed TV shows. According to Jessica Cecil, the controller of the BBC’s coding and digital creative initiative, “It’s about giving the next generation a chance to shape their world, not just be consumers in it.”

Reddit's New App Lets You Read AMAs On Your iPhone

Reddit’s AMAs (Ask Me Anything) are the one of the best things about the network. But let’s face it: Reddit isn’t the world’s prettiest website. The learning curve is fairly steep. Clearly, Reddit thinks so too, because it has now released a rather good-looking app to read and participate in AMAs.
