This is going to be a good week for tech lovers. One of the biggest technology trade shows, IFA, is taking place this week in Berlin. Major companies are going to show off their new products, these include the likes of Samsung as well. Not only is the company expected to unveil new mobile devices, it may even show off a “Quantum Dots” TV at IFA 2014.
The Korea Times hears from company officials and sources that Samsung may release a prototype of the LCD TV that uses “Quantum Dots” technology, which is referred to as the next-generation color viewing technology.
Home appliance makers come out in full force at IFA so the venue seems to be right for Samsung if it wants to show off this prototype. As opposed to conventional LCD screens, QD screens can provide better image quality and are poised to compete against OLED TVs. Since high color gamut performance is a salient feature of the QD technology, they can enable LCDs to deliver similar gamut performance as compared to OLEDs.
It is also claimed that Samsung’s rival LG will also be out with its own QD TV at IFA 2014. Initially only a prototype will be shown off so it can’t be said for sure when TVs with this new technology will hit the market.

IFA 2014 is coming up this week and we’re all anxiously waiting to see what products will be announced at the trade show. Microsoft has already confirmed that it will have something to show us at IFA. Today the company has posted another teaser of what to expect. The teaser lines up with rumors about Microsoft unveiling a new Lumia smartphone which will also be known as a “selfie” phone. Its pretty self-explanatory, the smartphone is likely to have a good front facing camera that’s ideal for taking selfies.
Rumors about this smartphone started floating a couple of months ago. Apparently it carries the “Superman” codename internally. Several images of the device have surfaced online as well, some as recently as last week, and rumors suggest that it will have a 5 megapixel front camera.
As far as the other specifications are concerned it is believed to be a mid-range device. Microsoft may only be looking to counter the likes of Sony, which has a similar “selfie” phone in the Xperia C3. Other manufacturers have similar plans.
The teaser that Microsoft has posted online shows a selfie, so now its pretty clear what’s going to come at IFA. Microsoft will formally make the announcement on September 4th. The webcast begins on the official Nokia Conversations blog, which is now run by Microsoft, at 10am CET>

Home automation is a trend that’s catching on these days. Manufacturers and developers are creating hardware and software which bring control for connected objects to a user’s smartphone, tablet or wearable device. Samsung has come up with several products under its Smart Home program and now its looking towards an expansion which will include technology from third party partners.
Samsung says that the new range of products and services have been designed to “increase home safety, improve energy management, adapt to in-home location.” Moreover they’ll also allow users to control all of the connected device through voice, so turning off a light bulb becomes as easy as simply saying it out loud.
The company hasn’t revealed yet which companies or services it will be teaming up with to expanding its Smart Home platform, we might have to wait until IFA 2014 to find out who its joining forces with. A software development kit or SDK will be released to developers later this year as well, allowing them to add command and control features for connected objects to their applications.
Its no surprise to see Samsung lay down its plans for advancing in the home automation space. This comes after its recent acquisition of SmartThings, which created a leading open platform for connected devices and the Internet of Things. Samsung is also a member of the Thread consortium which aims to come up with standards for connected devices.

Archos 50b Platinum smartphone offers versatility without breaking the bomb
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhen it comes to the world of smartphones, there are dime a dozen models out there in the market. However, if you are short on time to read up on all of the relevant reviews in the past, and would like a swift recommendation, perhaps the Archos 50b Platinum could prove to be quite the winner here. After all, surely one would not expect too much from a $149 handset, but the Archos 50b Platinum is a bag of surprises!
This latest smartphone from the French device manufacturer will run on a quad-core processor, and will sport an extremely bright 5” IPS display that comes in handy at all times – especially if you tend to be outdoors a whole lot, as the brightness would somewhat combat the glare from the sun. Want to separate your work life from your private life? Not a problem, thanks to dual SIM support thrown into the mix. Not only that, its 8MP camera at the back offers Full HD video recording capability and autofocus, while the 2MP front-facing camera will also sport a built in LED flash that comes in handy during low light conditions.
As for its memory, you can swap out 8GB microSD memory cards from time to time to keep things fresh. Expect the Archos 50b Platinum to arrive later this month with Android 4.4 KitKat in tow as the mobile operating system of choice if you are interested.

I am a big fan of Post-It Notes, mostly because I can stick them to my monitor to help me remember to do all the crap I need to do. That’s all I really think of using them for, but artist Akira Nagaya is a bit more creative. Nagaya makes some incredible art of out individual Post-It Notes and a sharp blade.
The Post-It cutout images include Ultraman, Pikachu, Ultraman, and Totoro among others. My favorite out of all of these is the one of Gigantor, with his fist pumping up in the air. The detail in that art is incredible – I wonder how long it took to cut that out.
The only part of the cutout art not separated from the original Post-It is a flap to allow the cutout to stand up. Throw in some backlighting and this art is beautiful indeed.
