Yacht Club Worker Rescues Dying Bald Eagle In Maryland

While opening up a fuel dock at the Maryland Yacht Club in Pasadena a maintenance worker discovered a 5-year-old bald eagle fighting for its life.

Ernie Jenkins told local media he saw the exhausted bird flapping around in the water near the club, where Maryland’s Rock Creek empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Using a net, Jenkins was able to lift the bird out of the water to safety.

“I didn’t want to watch him drown,” Jenkins told local paper The Capital Gazette. “If I didn’t get him out, he would have died and that was it.”

Tests showed the eagle was suffering from a respiratory illness and lead poisoning, which can lead to brain damage. A rescue team has the bird under surveillance while it is being treated.

“He might of got a rabbit that had pellets in him, or a fishing weight off of someone’s fishing line,” Jenkins told CBS Baltimore of the possible cause of the lead poisoning.

“[The eagle’s] condition at this point is poor and our prognosis is that we’re hopeful, but also trying to be realistic in that we don’t know if he’s going to make it,” Lisa Smith, executive director of the rescue center helping the eagle recover, told the Gazette.

Previously on the threatened and endangered species list, the bald eagle is now a common site throughout Maryland, especially near the Chesapeake Bay. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources estimates that more than 500 pairs of bald eagles nest in the state each year.

Jenkins is optimistic that the injured bird could soon rejoin the state’s wild eagle population.

“If he turns for the worst at least I tried. I gotta try you know, but I would love to see him back. I would love to see him back,” Jenkins told CBS Baltimore.

Sounding Good reveals SpeakAirs technology in Bluetooth wireless audio system

speakairsWhen it comes to getting the best sounding audio possible where your home’s theater system is concerned, there are many choices to pick from – and the sky is the limit, as long as your bank account does have enough balance to handle the deficit. Having said that, UK company Sounding Good Ltd. has stepped forward with a world’s first where Bluetooth wireless audio is concerned, looking to crowdfunding site Kickstarter to raise the relevant amount of funds for the innovative SpeakAir technology which will be found in the HiFive system.

This would mark the very first time that the HiFive system sports more than a pair of stereo speakers, where it delivers a wholly cable-free surround sound experience as it is made up of a Docking Station complete with sub-woofer and a quartet of satellite speakers, helping to offer superb quality audio in a highly portable package.

This would make it the ideal solution for home audio, gaming, home cinema or as a mobile music system, as the SpeakAirs HiFive will deliver the relevant amount of freedom from cable clutter as well as set up an immersive sound stage.

Apart from that, there will be a 3 Amp Lithium polymer power pack that has been specially built into the Docking Station, in addition to a 500 mAmp battery for the RX system, not to mention having 500 Amps in each of the satellite speakers. Apparently, a full battery charge is tipped to churn out up to 12 hours of play time at maximum volume, and the SpeakAirs technology found in the HiFive system will be 100% cable free, and yet is capable of delivering true stereo sound separation, something that other manufacturers have failed to achieve to date.

The SpeakAirs HiFive system can function either with the speakers housed in the Docking Station, or you can have it unpacked to deliver stereo surround sound. The Docking Station itself will also boast of a USB port that delivers ultimate connectivity for when an audio device is not Bluetooth enabled.

How To Install Flash On Android

With the release of latest Android 4.4 Kitkat OS, Google officially parted ways with Adobe Flash. Jelly Bean OS (Android 4.3) didn’t really support Flash either but there were simpler workarounds and tweaks to enable Flash support on Android JellyBean. However, the latest iteration of Android OS completely ditches Adobe Flash in favour of HTML5. Many websites have also added HTML5 support while getting rid of an outdated flash experience but there is still a large number of websites that require Flash support. Specially, online video streaming websites and flash games like Amazon Instant, Miniclip, etc. In order to use these websites on your Android device (running Android KitKat 4.4 or higher) you need Adobe’s Flash Player.

By following the method below, you can easily install Flash Player on any Android KitKat device. You can check your device’s Android version by going to Settings > About Phone/Tablet > Android version. If it’s Android 4.4.X then it means your device is running Android KitKat. This method does not require your Android device to have root permissions.

install adobe flash android 10 640x400

Prerequisite

  • Android device running Android KitKat OS 4.4+
  • File explorer application like File Manager HD, etc. There are many free choices
  • Internet connectivity.
  • For this tutorial, Nexus 7 Wi-Fi (2012 model) running Android 4.4.4 KitKat OS.
  • Dolphin Browser

Steps Overview

  • Enable “Unknown Sources” on Android.
  • Download and install Modded Adobe Flash Player APK.
  • Download and install Dolphin Browser and Dolphin JetPack for Android.
  • Enable Dolphin JetPack and Flash in Dolphin Browser.
  • Test Flash Player.

Enable “Unknown Sources” on Android

If you don’t already have “Unknown Sources” enabled on your Android device then go to your tablet or smartphone’s Settings > Security. In the Security menu, you will find “Unknown Sources” which should be checked. This allows you to install APK files directly without using Google Play Store.

install adobe flash android 07 640x400

Download and install Modded Adobe Flash Player APK

Before downloading the Modded APK file, make sure that you don’t have any previous versions of Flash Player installed on your Android device, if you do, then uninstall any previous builds completely before proceeding. To uninstall an Android app, go to Settings > Apps  and then locate the app you want to uninstall and tap it.

install adobe flash android 11 640x400

install adobe flash android 12 640x400

Now, simply hit uninstall button to get rid of it. Now, download the Modded Flash Player from Mediafire and install it. To install the APK file directly you will need a file Explorer app like File Manager HD. Open File Manager HD (or any other file explorer app), navigate to the “Downloads” folder and install the downloaded APK.

install adobe flash android 01 640x400

Download and install Dolphin Browser and Dolphin JetPack

You don’t need separate APK files for these apps because you can easily install the standard versions of Dolphin Browser and Dolphin JetPack from Google Play Store. In addition to supporting Flash, Dolphin JetPack will also boost Dolphin Browser’s browsing speed by up to 50%.

install adobe flash android 08 640x400

Enable Dolphin JetPack and Flash in Dolphin Browser

Finally, open Dolphin Browser and tap the small Dolphin icon in bottom-left corner and open Settings. Enable Dolphin JetPack in the Settings menu. Now, navigate to Web Content menu and turn Flash on, you can keep it as “always on” or “on demand” whichever suits your needs.

install adobe flash android 03 640x400

install adobe flash android 04 640x400

Test Flash Player

To test Flash Player on your Android device, you can either try the official Adobe Flash test or use any flash based website like Miniclip. If you’ve followed all the steps then these websites or any other flash based site should work smoothly. If it doesn’t then make sure you’ve followed all the steps carefully.

install adobe flash android 05 640x400

Conclusion

Keep in mind that this procedure will only enable Flash support in Dolphin Browser. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox will not run any flash based website. There could be other obscure browsers that might work with this procedure but it has only been successfully tried and tested on Dolphin Browser.

Now you can enjoy using flash based websites on your Android smartphone or tablet. We’re not sure if this procedure will work for the upcoming Android L but it works 100% on Android KitKat. We’re certain that the hardworking developers over at XDA Forums will also come up with a new hack for upcoming Android iterations in the future.

Your Android device should now run all Flash based sites without any problem. Don’t forget to share your device model with us, if you’ve installed Flash using the above method. You can also share any other method for using Flash on Android or maybe, another browser. Thanks!

iPhone 6 Outselling iPhone 6 Plus 4.76 To 1 In Japan

iPhone 6 review 6 640x426Apple’s new iPhone 6 models have slowly made their way around the world and Japan is one of the markets that the device has launched in. Now so far we know that in the US market, the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is currently outselling the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. It is possible that the larger iPhone 6 Plus could be too big for some users, but an alternative is that there isn’t enough stock.

Well it looks like over in Japan, it has also recently been noted that the iPhone 6 is outselling the iPhone 6 Plus by a factor of 4.6 to 1. That means that for every iPhone 6 Plus sold, about 5 units of the iPhone 6 are sold in its place. Once again we can’t be sure if this is because of preference where users are staying away from the larger iPhone, or if it is because of supply constraints.

Last we checked, the iPhone 6 Plus was sitting at an estimated delivery time of 3-4 weeks, versus the iPhone 6 in which customers only had to wait 7-10 days. While larger screens was one of the demands of iPhone users, it is possible that perhaps Apple had gone a bit overboard with 5.5-inches.

There are some hardware differences as well, such as a larger battery life, a higher resolution display which in turn gave it a higher pixel density, and optical image stabilization versus digital stabilization, but is this good enough to convince users to pay more for the larger model? For now it looks like the numbers aren’t supporting that theory. Perhaps when supply levels stabilize we can get a better look at it.

North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Is Suffering From 'Discomfort,' State Media Reports

SEOUL, Sept 26 (Reuters) – Young North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is suffering from “discomfort,” state media has said in the first official acknowledgement of ill health after a prolonged period out of the public eye.

Kim, 31, who is frequently the centerpiece of the isolated country’s propaganda, has not been photographed by state media since appearing at a concert alongside his wife on Sept. 3, fueling speculation he is suffering from bad health.

He had been seen walking with a limp since an event with key officials in July and in a pre-recorded documentary broadcast by state media on Thursday appeared to have difficulty walking.

“The wealth and prosperity of our socialism is thanks to the painstaking efforts of our marshal, who keeps lighting the path for the people, like the flicker of a flame, despite suffering discomfort,” a voice over for the hour-long documentary said.

The documentary was followed by a pre-recorded broadcast of a North Korean Supreme People’s Assembly meeting from which Kim Jong Un was notably absent.

Kim has rapidly gained weight since coming to power after his father died of a heart attack in 2011, photos released by state media show.

North Korea observers speculate Kim’s weight and family background may have contributed to his condition.

“Based on his gait, it appears he has gout – something (due to) diet and genetic predisposition that has affected other members of the Kim family,” said Michael Madden, an expert on the North Korean leadership and contributor to the 38 North website. Argentinian Police Uses Drones To Seek Out Tax Evaders

drone banAs drones are becoming cheaper, their usefulness has expanded as well. Now drones can be used by hobbyists, videographers, and let’s not forget law enforcement as well. As it turns out and according to a report from The Telegraph, South American countries such as Argentina have started using drones to seek out millionaires who might be evading their taxes.

How is this possible? Well it seems that some millionaires have reportedly registered their properties as empty lots. Sounds innocent enough, right? However when the police decided to fly their drones up there to take a look and instead of discovering an empty plot of land, law enforcement has stumbled upon sprawling mansions with swimming pools and whatnot.

Those who were caught are not looking at some pretty steep fines and it has been estimated that the government could be earning as much as $2 million from unpaid taxes from these hidden mansions. Then again if they could afford to build it, we guess they can afford to pay their fines as well.

However it seems that despite the use of drones to help seek out tax evaders and drug smuggling routes, some are expressed their concerns about their privacy, and according to Alejandro Sanchez of the Council on Hemispheric Affairs, he states that “there’s a possibility this technology can be used for all the wrong reasons and, unfortunately, throughout Latin America’s history, the abuse of power tends to happen quite often.”

Double O Bike Headlights Designed To Not Blind Drivers At Night

doubleo 640x391When it comes to bike riding, safety is extremely important as there are drivers out there who might not always be on the lookout for bike riders, not to mention you’re pretty exposed and all it takes is a light tap to send you flying. That being said, we can only imagine that the danger increases at night with low visibility, which is why the Double O bike lights could come in handy for the cycling enthusiast.

Now there are many types of bike lights out there, but what makes the Double O different from some of the competition is that the lights are centered in the middle, which could end up creating a very bright beam that might actually distract and annoy other drivers. Instead the LED lights have been spread out in a ring, as you can see in the image above.

Now Double O was the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign and they have created both lights for the front and the back. These lights are also detachable and they can also be worn on your helmet if that’s what you prefer, or if you have a backpack you can attach it to the straps as well.

The headlight is capable of putting out 85 lumens and according to its creators, will last a good 50 hours with standard AA batteries. The lights can also be attached to one another via magnets and can be threaded into a U-lock if you’d rather not have them stolen. If you’d like to learn more, head on over to the Double O website for the details.

iOS 8 Wants to Get to Know You Better

My phone is at rest on my desk, charging. I’ve enabled the new “Hey Siri” feature, which was part of the iOS 8 update. Now, the famous concierge feature that offers the world at the touch of a button is always-already on, listening (as long as it is plugged in). Somehow I’m feeling a bit less safe.

“Hey Siri,” I say, and my phone blinks awake. “You’re creeping me out.”

“After all I’ve done for you?” she replies.

Aptly put, Siri. Our gadgets, apps and wired devices make life a lot easier, connecting the work office to the home office and making seamless innumerable tasks and functionalities that used to require a warm body. The more information our apps and other wired goods gather about us, the more effectively they can guess what we will want or need next.

While a smartphone is light years beyond the many other devices usually considered part of the Internet of Things, our increasingly wired brave new world comes to mind as capabilities expand on multiple fronts. Hewlett-Packard reported earlier this year that nearly three quarters of the products in “The-Internet-of” category are vulnerable.

While Apple doesn’t have a past riddled with breaches, the larger the zone of possibility, the greater the concern should be. With all new things there are wrinkles, and they’re often ironed out after introduction and distribution. In simpler times, that resulted in product recalls and similar inconveniences. Now there is no recall. There’s a software patch. But before the flaw is detected and the update goes out, an army of hackers can mine those glitches for the golden workaround, intent on breaching the best-laid schemes of today’s security pros and grabbing both the glory of cracking the code, and the gold at the end of that cyber-rainbow.

“While the Internet of Things will connect and unify countless objects and systems, it also presents a significant challenge in fending off the adversary given the expanded attack surface,” HP’s Mike Armistead said in the report.

It’s Convenient…and Potentially Dangerous

If we’ve learned anything these past years, it should be that just about anything involving programing and code can be infiltrated, corrupted and hijacked. It’s maddening to return from that Florida vacation to burst pipes because someone you may or may not know hacked the heating system in your house, and it’s terrifying to find nude pictures of yourself online. But that’s really nothing compared to the realization that someone’s wormed their way through your new phone or a network-connected kitchen appliance to your personally identifiable information and committed fraud in your name. Bottom-line: The impossible has now become the possible — and perhaps the inevitable.

The current state of cybersecurity emergency that we find ourselves in should make you at least wonder if your phone, all duded up with its highly evolved operating system and standby listening function, might just allow a third party to eavesdrop on you, and with no indication that it is doing so. That’s precisely the sort of thing hackers try to figure out.

The take-away, if there is one, is that while the iOS 8 upgrade represents a giant leap forward with regard to what you can do with your smartphone, it also expands your “attackable surface.”

Know Your Features and Vulnerabilities

There are a few other features on iOS 8 that fall under the rubric of smart things that expand your attackable surface.

iOS 8 now makes it possible for you to share your location in Messages by simply flicking on the “Send My Current Location” feature. The problem: A phisher sends you a text, and you reply, “Who’s this?” The recipient is a burglar who now knows where you are–let’s say 5 miles from home. The other more mundane issue here is the data you’re giving away–does Apple really need to know your daily schedule better than you do? And what if Apple gets breached?

Another location services feature enhancement in iOS 8 appears on the lock screen of your phone, which now features small icons when you are near a place that Apple thinks you will want to know about. That’s pretty cool, if you feel Apple really “gets” you, but if you’re not sure Cook’s commandos are your soul mates, the feature is: 1.) annoying 2.) creepy 3.) bad for your budget or 4.) all of the above. And once again, should Apple ever suffer a data compromise there will be a whole lot of mineable information about you “out there.”

As our devices give us ever more potentiality, we must grok the fact that cybercrime is evolving at the speed of light and increasing geometrically. Every scintilla of our personal narrative that we knowingly or unwittingly swap for convenience, pleasure and the “newest, coolest thing” can lead us into an unadulterated nightmare if it falls into the wrong hands. The personal information that we trade for the whiz-bang of the latest killer app–used for marketing campaigns and sales projections–should be a buzz kill. When we use our information to get things, more than ever, it’s important to remember: We’ve become the product and unfortunately, more often than we’d like to admit, the guy who’s making the purchase isn’t our friend.

The Matrix gets 8 Bit Cinema makeover

Entertainment comes in many forms, and some of the best types evoke a pleasant sense of nostalgia. Such is the reason many find 8 Bit Cinema, a YouTube-centric series of pixelated videos, to be so entertaining. Latest to its catalog is The Matrix in old school game style. The first movie in the Matrix trilogy has been transformed into an … Continue reading
