Stage Door: Uncle Vanya

2014-10-01-UNCLEmaster180.jpg

Life in Czarist Russia at the turn of the 20th century is bleak. The general malaise infects eco-forward Dr. Astrov, estate manager Vanya and his niece Sonya, while the serfs have little expectation of relief. Russia may be two decades away from the Bolshevik Revolution, but Uncle Vanya, now off-Broadway at the Pearl Theatre, offers a glimpse of a country on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Like Ibsen, Chekhov is a key figure in the birth of modernism in the theater, albeit with a distinctly Russian sense of foreboding. The doctor, in the guise of the playwright, bemoans: “The climate is changing for the worse, every day the planet gets poorer and uglier.”

Charting the misery of his beloved Russia on the brink is Chekhov’s artistry. He is adept at heartbreak, exposing the raw yearnings of those caught between desire and obligation. Broken people, broken relationships destroyed by inertia and indifference are his specialty.

Uncle Vanya is set on an estate populated by a sterile, controlling academic, his disappointed young wife and overworked relations. While Vanya isn’t as dramatically tense as Chekhov’s Three Sisters or The Seagull, it is prescient in tone. Replete with literary giants — Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Pushkin and Gogol — Russia lagged behind burgeoning democratic movements worldwide. The play addresses women’s rights, power imbalances and ecological issues, though Russia has yet to be roused from its tyrannical slumber.

In Uncle Vanya, only two characters, a bloviated, dry academic (Dominic Cuskern) and his wife Yelena (Rachel Botchan), the object of desire for both Vanya and Dr. Astrov (Bradford Cover), have a scintilla of ease. In turn, Astrov has bewitched Sonya (Michelle Beck).

Vanya and Sonya run the family estate, sacrificing their own needs to send earnings to her father, the pompous professor. His arrival signals the realization of profound unhappiness; their routine subverted, their misery increases exponentially. Is it too late to repair?

Paul Schmidt’s translation is unerringly modern, the word “freak” is repeatedly used, as is the directorial style. But the strife and longing of the Russian soul is ever-present. The catch — Vanya is more depression than drama. The painting that hangs on the wall in act two is telling — a ship on rough waters threatens to capsize. Yet the need to sail on, whatever the hardships, remains.

Chekhov’s larger vision is evident in Astrov’s desire to preserve the forests for future generations, one of the more notable aspects of this ensemble production. However, not all the performers are in sync. Cover plays Astrov as a tormented whiner, circa 2014, while Botchan, usually a key part of any Pearl production, is uneven. Beck’s Sonya is respectable, and Mixon’s Vanya is a convincing wreck. The directorial balance is tricky; and the lack of action is a decided handicap. But kudos to set designer Jason Simms and Barbara A. Bell’s costumes for hitting the right note.

Uncle Vanya is a challenge to stage. Still, as a chronicle of fin de siècle family dysfunction, wasted lives and thwarted passions, Chekhov’s analytic eye sees all.

These 6 Ways People Are Recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month Will Make You Smile

October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and some individuals and organizations are going beyond pink ribbons to embrace out-of-the-box ways to stand up for breast health.

We’ve partnered with the makers of Genius 3D mammography to highlight six awesome ways people are doing their part to keep breast cancer a part of the conversation.

1. Check Your Puppies!
coppafeel
Arguably the best thing on the internet, these pups are bringing attention to breast cancer prevention, thanks to the UK edition of Cosmopolitan and London-based self-examination advocate organization CoppaFeel!. It might seem silly, but their heads (er…hands?) are in the right place: Each month, Cosmo’s Facebook and Twitter followers are reminded to conduct their monthly breast exam with a photo of cute puppies in a bra. Cute animals AND breast health? We’re into it.

2. #itouchmyselfproject

This a cappella take on The Divinyls’ 1990 classic anthem “I Touch Myself” will give you chills. After realizing her diagnosis was terminal, frontwoman Chrissy Amphlett thought this girl-power classic should be repurposed to encourage women to check their bodies for cancer. After her death in April 2013, Australian advocacy group Cancer Council New South Wales collaborated with a local group of singers to recreate this song as a means for self-examination advocacy.

3. Standup (Literally) for Awareness
var src_url=”http://embed.live.huffingtonpost.com/HPLEmbedPlayer/?segmentId=53f20e1102a760cf65000594&autoPlay=false”; src_url += “&onVideoDataLoaded=HPTrack.Vid.DL&onTimeUpdate=HPTrack.Vid.TC”; if (typeof(commercial_video) == “object”) { src_url += “&siteSection=”+commercial_video.site_and_category; if (commercial_video.package) { src_url += “&sponsorship=”+commercial_video.package; } } document.write(”);
We were already big fans of comedian Tig Notaro, but the way she announced her breast cancer diagnosis threw her into uncharted onstage territory. The set, which is now available on iTunes, got rave reviews for bringing a touch of humor to a very unfunny topic. From Entertainment Weekly: “…Funny, sensitive, and with a firm grasp on the fundamental absurdity of life.” Not many people can turn tragedy into touching standup, but Tig Notaro definitely succeeded.

4. Turning Lemons into (Actual) Lemonade
lemonade
What’s the only thing more refreshing than a tall glass of chilled sweetness? One served with a side of compassion. Two Texas girls took their end-of-summer lemonade stand to philanthropic heights when they used the classic kid entrepreneur model to raise funds for a local organization dedicated to helping breast cancer patients. The girls put a creative touch on the summer classic — offering customers the choice of pink lemonade (and cupcakes) to help raise awareness for the cause. How sweet is that?!

5. Stiletto Stampede
stiletto stampede
Race for the Cure events will happen in 150 cities around the world this year alone. But organizers in Austin, Texas, really kick it up a notch with “Stiletto Stampede,” their take on the annual fund-race. Now in its sixth year, participants make the 100-yard dash in high heels to help women and men better understand breast cancer and breast health.

6. Cookies for the Cause
mammograhams
We love these “mammo-graham” cookies from blogger Wendy Thomas. Here’s the recipe so you can make your own and spread awareness among your family and friends (or even the office!)

Mammo-Graham Marzipan Recipe

What you’ll need:

 • chocolate graham crackers split in two
 • 1 roll of marzipan
 • white frosting
 • pink frosting gel

To make the ones pictured above, Wendy used one roll of the marzipan cut into 13 pieces and warmed in the microwave for about 10 seconds. Then she says to “roll each section into a ball, and squish while molding it until you have a flat section for between the graham crackers and a bulging section that sticks out. ‘Glue’ the marzipan to the graham crackers with some frosting and then use the gel frosting to make the nipple.”

8 Moments In Music History That Were Completely Spontaneous

The spontaneous gesture, the offhand remark, the happy accident: These are the reasons why we pay attention to pop culture. These are the things that we remember, that we talk about decades later. After all, why would we see live music that we’ve heard dozens of time before? Why do we watch interviews with our favorite artists? Why are we obsessed with arcane trivia? We’d argue that it’s the endless possibility for spontaneity, the glimpse of realness behind the glamour.

In partnership with Juicy Fruit, we’re bringing you eight moments in music history that gave the phrase #spontaneousfun new meaning.

1956: The Million Dollar Quartet holds a once-in-a-lifetime jam session
elvis presley carl perkins
Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis walk into a room….

Elvis Presley (now signed to RCA) was at the peak of his popularity, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins were certified stars, and Jerry Lee Lewis was a relative unknown, but all of them found themselves at Sun Records on this fateful December day. The temporary supergroup jammed on country and gospel songs; luckily, Sun Records owner Sam Phillips was savvy enough to hit “record” and bring in a reporter to ensure this was preserved for posterity.

1960: Ella forgets her lines in Berlin
ella fitzgerald mack the knife
“But it was a swingin’ tune / And it’s a hit, too / So we tried to do / Mack the Knife.”

Ella Fitzgerald’s performance of “Mack the Knife” begins innocently enough:

“We haven’t heard a girl sing it, and since it’s so popular we’ll try to do it for you,” she says, the band vamping quietly behind her. “We hope we remember all the words.”

Well, she makes it through one verse seamlessly, but soon enough, the wheels come off and she’s improvising new lyrics with cheerful abandon: “We’re makin’ a wreck / A wreck / Of ‘Mack the Knife.’” By the middle of the song, she’s moved on to a singing history of the song, a dead-on impression of Louis Armstrong, and some more metacommentary on her performance. By the end, she’s completely brought down the house. This charming “wreck” won two Grammys for Best Female Vocal Performance in 1959.

1969: The Beatles take over the roof of the Apple Corps Building

“You’ve been playing on the roofs again and that’s no good. ‘Cause you know your Momma doesn’t like that. She gets angry! She’s gonna have you arrested!”

To be fair, the Beatles’ infamous final public performance, on Jan. 30, 1969, wasn’t spontaneous on the band’s part; they had long planned a live show as the conclusion to their Let It Be sessions and settled on the Apple rooftop four days before the performance. The session, and the crowd reaction, is fully documented in the film.

Given that it was their first performance in nearly three years, Londoners on their lunch break — and the London police — were certainly surprised. Quickly, a crowd formed down below, and their reactions are captured in the documentary, from “Fantastic!” to a grumpy “This type of music has its place.”

1973: Keith Moon of “The Who” is replaced by a random fan
keith moon
Talkin’ about my generation? Talkin’ about being in the right place at the right time.

It was Nov. 20, 1973, and Scot Halpin was already having a pretty good day. He and his friend had scalped tickets to The Who’s show at San Francisco’s Cow Palace, arrived 13 hours early, and fought their way to the front of the stage.

When The Who’s legendary (and legendarily reckless) drummer Keith Moon passed out on his drum kit halfway through the set, Halpin ended up on stage. Promoter Bill Graham simply asked: “Can you play?” And the next thing he knew, Halpin was up on stage playing “Smokestack Lightning,” “Spoonful” and “Naked Eye” with the band that was left standing.

1979: The Sugar Hill Gang records “Rapper’s Delight” in a single take
rappers delight
I said a hip hop / Hippie to the hippie / The hip, hip a hop, and you don’t stop, a rock it

Widely considered to be the song that popularized hip hop. Contrary to popular belief, the Sugar Hill Gang did not “sample” Chic’s “Good Times”; rather, the group used a studio musician to recreate the infamous bass line — for 15 minutes straight. Luckily, they finished the whole thing in one take.

1984: ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ premieres

These go to 11.

This Rob Reiner-directed movie will forever define “cult hit.” It tanked with test audiences, but upon its 1984 release, it received rave reviews from critics and became mandatory viewing for music geeks of all stripes. Fun fact: the cast shot the movie with a four-page treatment and the rest is completely improvised. In 2002, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress.

2005-2013: Kanye West does well … anything. But mostly this:

I’mma let you finish…

What more can we say? Since breaking through the culture in the mid-2000s, Kanye West has made sure that we would never be bored. Whether he was pontificating on sneakers, television, commerce, or leather sweatpants, West’s spontaneous speeches ensured that the spotlight was focused squarely on him.

But West REALLY outdid himself at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards when he stole the glory from Taylor Swift’s win for Best Female Video. After grabbing the mic from Swift’s hands and infamously insisting “imma let you finish,” West gave his honest opinion: “I’m sorry, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time.”

Brutal, Yeezy. Just brutal.

2011-2014: Live entertainment comes to a plane (or train) near you

They really got their wish right now (wish right now, wish right now).

To be honest, spontaneous moments on public transportation are usually a bad thing. However, the rapper B.O.B. gave Delta travelers a pleasant surprise when he serenaded them with his hit song “Airplanes” on a NYC to LAX flight. Although flash mobs and spontaneous performances have become pretty much ubiquitous, some, like the above and, of course, the Broadway cast’s subway rendition of “The Circle Of Life” can be epic for those lucky enough to witness them.

Sometimes, the best things in life are unplanned. Check out Juicy Fruit‘s website for some more #spontaneousfun.

We Asked Men What Really Baffled Them About Lady Parts, And This Is What They Said

Ever since the first cave people played “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours,” man has pondered the mysterious human female body.

To even the most educated among us, it can be a confusing — albeit beautiful — apparatus that should probably require one of those IKEA manuals with easy-to-understand drawings.

But fear not, menfolk, because we are here to part the feminine veil. We partnered with the makers of Genius 3D mammography and huddled with a group of curious men to find out what questions they had about lady parts.

Here are those questions answered — without shame. Because everyone ought to know how a woman works.

Where does the nipple end and the areola begin?

We’ll take this as a warmup, since everyone has them. The nipple is the raised tip of the breast containing several holes from which milk may issue. The areola is a larger, flat, colored disc around the nipple. Bumps, called Montgomery glands, dot the areola. These produce an oil that lubricates and cleans the nipple prior to breastfeeding. Interestingly, both may darken during pregnancy. (One theory is that the darker color acts as a bullseye for babies.)

But to satisfy the philosophical bent of our questioner: like a pink-hued mesa at sunset, thrusting up from rocky foothills, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly where one ends and the other begins.

Are boobs heavy?
bagsofsand
Boob size depends on genetics, diet and stage of life. But, given the universal obsession with the breast, there’s a surprising lack of definitive information about average breast weight. We have seen estimates ranging from 2 pounds to 20 pounds. Still, we can deduce a few things from bra cups. (If anyone would like to weigh themselves, use this really handy guide to self-measurement.)

Cup sizes correspond to a certain number of fluid ounces. An A-cup holds 8 fluid ounces, or a little over half a pound per boob. A D-cup holds 27 ounces, working out to at minimum 1.75 pounds a boob. And America’s most common bra-size is now 34DD.

That doesn’t take into account the entire…superstructure holding up the boob. Nor does it account for swelling. Swelling during pregnancy and lactation is well known, but, according to reports, breasts can also swell 25 percent during sex.

In summary, boobs can indeed be heavy. Regardless of presumed boob weight, be a gentleman, and offer a lady your seat on the train.

Do women experience — er — shrinkage?

As much as you might wish it, women are probably not going to experience anything similar to your Costanza moment. That’s not to say, though, that various female body parts don’t exhibit some elasticity. Notably, the clitoris and labia — the outer parts of the female genitalia, buddy — become engorged upon arousal.

Being subject to the laws of physics and biology — just like, you know, everyone else in the entire universe — women may experience slight retraction in low temperatures. When cold, the nipple, for example, contracts to reduce surface area, thereby reducing heat loss and energy spent. The female genitalia, being largely internal, are spared from the horrors of shrinkage.

Many post-menopausal women encounter a condition called vaginal atrophy, a thinning of vaginal walls due to decreased hormone levels, but this is over a period of time. Scientists also believe that drinking three cups of coffee per day may link to breast shrinkage over time.

How do boobs actually make milk? How do they actually make milk? Isn’t that crazy?

It is hard to imagine producing a life-sustaining fluid in quantities large enough to power a tiny human. We have trouble just watering a cactus. But it happens, and here’s how:

Picture peacock feathers spreading out from the nipple into the fatty tissue of the breast. At the tip of the “feathers” lie small cavities, called alveoli cells, where a chemical agent pulls sugars and proteins from the blood and turns them to milk. The liquid trickles down a series of ducts and tubes and pools in a reservoir called a milk sinus — pretty much just a Baby Pantry. The nipple has 15-20 holes in it from which milk may can be sucked.

Life happens, and it’s frickin’ miraculous.

Why can’t a man produce milk?

Well, hold on to your shirt there, partner — you just might be able to. Men pack all the tools necessary to produce milk. Our breast tissue is riddled with the milk-factory-esque alveoli; our pituitary glands secrete prolactin, the agent that turns the blood’s nutrients to milk. And in some mammalian species, most notably the especially lactacious (that is a word, we checked) Dayak bat, male breastfeeding is the norm.

So why aren’t more men doing it?
canyoumilkme
The answer is that, under normal circumstances, men don’t make enough prolactin. (We make about half of what non-pregnant women do, but pregnant women? No contest.) In times of illness or stress — such as a pituitary gland problem or severe malnourishment, as happened to prisoners of war after World War II — male lactation can occur. Experts theorize, too, that extensive stimulation of the male nipple may be enough to stimulate lactation.

We leave it to you to experiment.

Are you afraid of squishing your boobs if you lay on your stomach? Does getting punched in the boob hurt? (Which we interpret as: like testicles, are breasts especially sensitive to pain?)

The breasts are suffused with nerve endings, so, yes, a boob punch hurts. Real men don’t punch women — in their boobs or otherwise.

Breast pain, called mastalgia, is indeed a common complaint. According to experts, 70 percent of women will experience it in their lifetime. It often arrives in conjunction with a woman’s menstrual cycle and lasts 2-3 days — although around 8 percent of women suffer longer, more debilitating bouts.

Sadly, breast pain may warp a man’s normally foolproof remedy — the hug — into something painful. Proceed with caution.

What evolutionary purpose do boobs serve?

It is unclear. Our long history of breast obsession brands us an outlier in the animal kingdom: we are the only species known to fondle mammaries during intercourse.

One recent theory about why men love breasts, though not without detractors, is that we wily males are programmed to use the breasts to strengthen bonds, increasing the chances of reproductive success. When stimulated, the nipple triggers the release of oxytocin, a “love” chemical that normally serves to bond mother to her child. The nipple doesn’t know whether it’s a cute baby or your ugly mug, though. In effect, you’re getting the benefit of the love chemical possibly not meant for you.

The lesson is: take care of your partner’s breast and she will love you for it.

Isn’t a mammogram sort of like a waffle iron for boobs? How does that detect cancer?
waffles
A mammogram is actually an X-ray taken of the breast. The “waffle iron” consists of two glass or plastic plates that secure and position the breast for a short duration while the picture is taken. It is not hot; you could not make waffles with it. It is, according to sources, “uncomfortable.” After two X-rays are taken, a radiologist examines the pictures for anomalies consistent with breast cancer. If found, further testing is required.

In 3D mammography, pictures of the breast are taken from a variety of angles, allowing for the creation of a comprehensive 3D image of the breast. Recent studies show that certain 3D mammograms boost invasive cancer detection rates by 41 percent while also reducing the anxiety-provoking callbacks for false alarms by up to 40 percent.

<bigHow can you help check your partner for breast cancer?

This year, it’s projected that there will be 232,670 new cases of breast cancer. There will be 40,000 deaths.

You can help, though. Feel your partner’s breast for any abnormal lumps, tenderness or changes to the breast. (Not bad, right?) And take part in Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.

These 7 Things Are Even Cooler When They Come In 3D

When you sit and think about it, the world of 3D really is an incredible one. Thanks to innovations in virtual reality and 3D printing, among other things, it appears that the possibilities are truly endless.

In this spirit, we’ve partnered with the makers of Genius 3D Mammography to bring you a list of things that now exist beyond two dimensions. Many of these once seemed like they could only exist in sci-fi movies, but now they’ve become part of our hi-tech reality.

1. Manmade ‘Organs’

human bone

It appears that anything can be created using 3D printing. This amazing technology has been used to not only make everyday items like combs but also much more complex objects — like human body parts. Yes, you read that correctly: Ears, kidneys, blood vessels, skin and bones have all been created using 3D printers. Each of these creations incorporates real human cells fused with synthetic materials, such as ceramic (for bones) or sugar filaments (for blood vessels). Scientists are still testing the potential these organs have for transplants, but hopes are high that one day surgeons can implant these and other organs into those who need them.

2. Spacecraft Parts

nasa

The medical field isn’t the only one using 3D printing in unique ways. NASA has taken advantage of the technology for building parts of spacecrafts, as well as instruments. The organization predicts that it will soon be sending the printers themselves into space so astronauts can create their own tools while on explorations. Soon we’ll be able to say that 3D printing is literally out of this world.

3. Movies … Since 1922

audience watching 3d movie

We all know that movies now exist in 3D, but what you probably didn’t know is that these types of films have been around since the early 1900s. In fact, the first 3D film, “The Power of Love,” was screened for audiences in 1922. It’s safe to say that these films looked pretty different from those we’re used to today, but it’s interesting to consider how long this technology has been around.

4. Your Personal TV

3d tv

If you’d rather enjoy a 3D film from the comfort of your own home, you’re in luck. 3D televisions now bring something that could once only be enjoyed on the silver screen into your living room. All you need is a little extra cash and a special pair of glasses.

5. Fantasy Video Games

oculus rift

Thanks to companies like Oculus Rift, movies aren’t the only type of entertainment that can be enjoyed in 3D. Now gamers can actually enter their fantasy world by simply wearing a headset. This is made possible by technology similar to that used in 3D movies, where a unique and parallel image is presented to each eye.

6. Ultrasounds

getting an ultrasound

3D has done wonders for sonograms. What once was a barely perceptible black-and-white photo now includes specific details about an unborn baby’s facial features. Doctors have also found these images incredibly useful for checking on a growing baby’s health and for any potential genetic syndromes.

7. Mammograms

Mammograms, in addition to sonograms, have been vastly improved by 3D technology. Doctors can now see a more detailed image that helps better determine whether or not there are any issues of concern. Because of this increased clarity, women also need fewer visits to repeat the imaging process for false alarms.

Genius 3D mammography is available as Hologic Selenia® Dimensions® 3D system. Please consult your physician for a complete list of the benefits and risks associated with mammography.

6 Major Reasons Why You Should Do Business In Vegas

It’s a no-brainer that Las Vegas is great for business: the city averages 320 days of sunshine per year, can play host to both a 100,000-person convention as well as a night out with your clients, and is super-accessible from anywhere in the world.

This has made Vegas the second busiest city in the United States for business travelers.

But just because you are in Vegas for business doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make time for fun, as well. With this in mind, we’ve partnered with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to bring you a guide to ensure that you, your coworkers, and your most prized clients are getting the full Vegas experience from day to night.

1. The Strip has a ton of fine-dining restaurants that cater to big groups, whether you’re talking business or kicking back.
