Earlier this year Baidu revealed that they were working on a wearable headset of their own which was meant to rival the likes of Google Glass. Dubbed the “Eye”, it seems that the device is still in its somewhat early stages of development although the company did reveal additional information about it at Baidu World.
Speaking to The Next Web, Baidu’s Director of International Communications, Kaiser Kuo, mentioned that the Eye was still in its prototype stages, but there are plans to make it available to consumers eventually, although they did point out that the Eye was more of an experiment if anything.
Interestingly enough the unit that Baidu showed off, which you can see in the image above, does not come with a screen unlike Google Glass or other wearable headsets. Baidu claims that by adding a screen, it impairs vision and will also tire the eyes of the wearer. Instead the Eye will pair with smartphones and tablets to provide them with the same functionality.
While this does seem to defeat the purpose of such a device, the upside is that battery of the Eye lasts longer and will also be lighter to wear. The device will also allow users to identify objects and analyze images. According to Kuo, ”You can identify plants, or find products (so far, handbags and articles of clothing) on e-commerce sites. The use case scenarios for now are limited, but we’ve got an enormous data set of clothes, bags, and flora right now.”
No word on when Baidu plans on making it available to the masses, but in the meantime what do you guys think? Is it a little odd that it does not come with a display, or are you digging its display-free look?

When it comes to receiving notifications, we have phones, tablets, smart bands, and even smartwatches, but what if you wanted something a little more subtle? What if those smart bands or smartwatches clashed with your fashion sense? Well if you wanted something less obvious, then perhaps the Mota Smart Ring could be the accessory for you.
As you can see in the image above, the Mota Smart Ring is basically a ring that is worn around your finger. It will feature a tiny display will be able to deliver information directly to your finger, such as the time, notifications from Facebook, Twitter, your email, or when you have a call coming in.
For the most part it seems that the notifications are pretty intuitive as they are based on images that we’re sure most of you guys are familiar with by now. The ring will also not just display information, but it will also be able to alert the user with via sound or tactile feedback, which presumably means vibrations.
We have to admit we like its simplicity and its stylish nature. It will come in either midnight black or pearl white, but unfortunately pricing and availability have yet to be revealed. Mota is expected to share additional details about their Smart Ring at IFA this week, so do check back with us later to see if there is any newer information that can be had.

Don’t you hate it when you’re out and your phone runs out of battery? Get a power bank or a battery case, you say, and while that’s a great idea, what if those run out of battery too? Well then for the most part you’d be in big trouble, right? Well the good news is that if you don’t mind pledging some money to a Kickstarter campaign, perhaps the Oivo could be a charger that might be worth your time.
Unlike power banks or battery cases, the Oivo uses actual AA batteries to charge your device. What this means is that in the event your phone runs out of juice, all you’d need to do is pop on over to your local convenience store and pick up a few more, or if you have some lying around at home you could use those too.
It is admittedly rather unsightly when attached to your phone, but it gets the job done. However when it is not plugged in, the Oivo can sort of clip together and be small and portable enough to fit on your keychain. It will require four AA batteries and according to its creators, its efficiency will depend on the type of battery you use.
The creators also promise that there should be enough power to fully charge your phone back to 100% and then some. We doubt that many of you guys relish the idea (and the waste) of having to buy AA batteries all the time, so we think the Oivo charger would be more for emergency purposes and if you truly need to charge your device.
Unfortunately the Oivo only supports iOS devices with a Lightning port at the moment. The creators state that a micro USB version would not be out of the question, although their priority is funding the Lightning version. If you’d like to learn more or pledge your support, head on over to its Kickstarter page for the details.

It wasn’t too long ago that customers who wanted a tablet and a laptop would have to resort to buying separate devices. Nowadays we guess there are still users out there who prefer to use separate devices, but if you’re the sort that would prefer using only one device out of convenience, then Acer’s 2-in-1 notebooks could be what the doctor ordered.
The company has recently taken the wraps off their new Acer Aspire Switch 11 series and expanded their Switch 10 series with a newer model.
Starting with the Aspire Switch 11, these are new 2-in-1 notebooks that will come with 11.6-inch displays. There are two models in this range – the SW5-171 and the SW5-111. The former will be a slightly higher-end model with an Intel Core i5 processor under the hood. It will also pack a Full HD display and a 128GB SATA hard drive for storage. It will also be accompanied by 4GB of RAM and will support a variety of peripherals via USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 ports.
The SW5-111 will be a slightly lower-end model. It will feature a lower resolution of 1366 x 768 and will be powered by an Intel Atom Z3745 processor. It will come with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage. There will also be two USB 2.0 ports – one normal and one micro, and a 2MP front-facing camera that can be used for video calls. However despite the differences in hardware, both models will feature Gorilla Glass 3 screens, front-facing stereo speakers, and a chiclet-style keyboard.
Last but not least is the Acer Aspire Switch 10. This model will join the existing models and users will be able to choose between a Full HD display or a 1280×800 display, although both models will come with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen. Both models will also be powered by an Intel Atom quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM and a battery life that Acer boasts should last up to 7-8 hours, depending on the resolution you chose. It will also come preloaded with Microsoft Office 365 Personal and Windows 8.1.
The Acer Aspire Switch 11 notebooks will be available in October where it will be priced starting from $399. The Acer Aspire Switch 10 on the other hand will be available in September and will be priced starting from $329.99.

When it comes to the safety of your family, there is simply no need to compromise at all. After all, money can never purchase a life that is broken, or even worse, lost. Those who happen to be extremely well off and would like to ensure their homes will remain as safe as possible will most probably have employed a security staff of sorts, and it does not hurt either to set up a rather extensive network of video monitors around. Swann Security, a name that has been trusted in such a department for some time already, has just announced its Digital Wireless Security System.
The Swann Security Digital Wireless Security System is also known as the ADW-410 Camera and Monitor with Motion Triggered Recording, where this unique plug and play wireless surveillance system will be able to offer a quick and easy do-it-yourself security solution, as well as day and night High Definition quality video which can be accessed remotely from mobile devices and tablets.
Sporting a powerful 720P high definition camera, the Digital Wireless Security System can record up to a distance of 165 feet/50 meters, which results in high quality images – regardless of whether it is during the daytime or at night, thanks to its 20 IR LEDs. Not only that, the camera will boast of an integrated microphone which would enable users to have the opportunity to see, but also to hear audio up to 16 feet/5 meters. Users will be able to monitor just exactly what is happening round the clock, and will be notified through their smartphone or tablet whenever any kind of activity is registered by the camera’s motion-triggered feature. These cameras are pretty hardy, being able to be mounted either inside or outside thanks to its IP66 weather resistant rating.
The system will come with an 8GB micro SD memory card right out of the box to help you get started, and the memory can be expanded up to 32GB. The asking price? $249.99 a pop.
