Microsoft Will Not Deliver Foreign Emails To The U.S.

microsoft logoMicrosoft has taken a stand by refusing to hand over emails to the U.S. government from the Dublin data center, and this particularly bold move comes across after a New York District Court Judge’s order was purposed last Friday. Judge Loretta Preska ruled in the favor of the government, citing that the government is able to continue with the retrieval of emails in foreign data centers, but the software giant has steadfastly refused to follow the court’s order. Not only that, Microsoft is unable to appeal as long as the Judge is most likely to place the company in contempt.

According to a Microsoft spokesperson who is familiar with the situation, “We will appeal promptly and continue to advocate that people’s emails deserve strong privacy protection in the US and around the world.”

What do you think? Do you think that emails which are stored in foreign data centers would and should come under jurisdiction of a certain government that is far away? It was mentioned that since Microsoft is a U.S. company, it must then hand over the emails to the U.S. government, but Microsoft claims otherwise, citing the fact that a handful of international treaties concerning the sharing of information prevents the company from breaching the trust of its users.

Metal Gear REX Costume Has A Human Within

Children absolutely love mascots, and whenever you see on of these huge mascots go bumbling around a supermarket or in a public square, there will be enthralled children surrounding it, sometimes giving it a nice, long hug to show their adoration and glee. Well, behind every mascot lies a human, and so the same principle would apply to this particular Metal Gear REX costume.

I know that Halloween is still more than a month away, but it does not hurt to be prepared far earlier, don’t you think so? The Metal Gear REX costume might be able to be created by a single person, but it would require at least two more folks around you to help you out in assembling the entire shebang, as you can see for yourself in the video above. Pro Voltage Cosplay claims that it took a whopping seven months to create this Metal Gear REX costume.

Where the world of Metal Gear is concerned, REX happens to be a kind of mech that is able to launch an undetectable nuclear device using a railgun. This is one huge and scary machine, and will be operated by a pilot within. I would make sure that my bladder and bowels are properly emptied before I actually put this costume on as it is going to be a pain to remove.

Implant Could Stop Seizures During Sleep

brain implantWe have seen how useful implants can be to alleviate and manage certain medical conditions in the past, including this one that is capable of controlling high blood pressure without the need for any kind of drugs. Well, here is a word on a new kind of implant that supposedly monitors your brain, and will stop seizures even as you are in a deep sleep.

Matthew Busby is one of the first patients over in the U.K. to give this brand new device a go, where it can detect whether there is a seizure which is about to happen, and it will go about preventing that fit from happening. Busby has lived with the possibility of seizures happening ever since he was seven months old, where the daily seizures were triggered by epilepsy. The most difficult period of his life saw him go through up to 60 times a day.

This new implant might mean the end of having to consume a cocktail of drugs, where it knows when a seizure is about to happen, before it kicks in to send automatic signals to the brain so that the necessary steps can be taken by the body to prevent the seizure from happening. Known as the AspireSR generator, it was recently approved for use in the UK and Europe just a few months back, and hopefully it will be affordable enough for the masses as the current asking price of £10,000 would make it out of reach for most folks.

SoftBank’s Pepper Robot To Go On Sale In The U.S.

pepper saleSoftBank of Japan, a company that most people would associate with mobile phone services, has announced that they have worked on a plan to sell their very own robot known as “Pepper” over in the U.S. within a year’s time. Pepper happens to be a robot that stands at 1.2 meters in height, where it is capable of cracking a joke by pulling it out from its digital archives, while making an estimate on how the human it is interacting with at the moment is feeling based on one’s expressions.

First of all, the Pepper robot will go on sale in Japan next February with a price tag of $1,900, where it will soon be followed by a release in the U.S. later in the same year itself. SoftBank claims that they have already received between 300 and 400 inquiries about Pepper from a wide range of companies including those in the finance, food service and education sectors.

SoftBank is rather optimistic about the kind of sales figures that the Pepper robot will be able to generate, where they expect the sales load to be spread equally between corporations and home owners. Pepper will come with a laser sensor and a battery life of up to 12 hours.

Lenovo ERAZER X310 & X315: Affordable Gaming Desktop PCs

Lenovo Erazer X315 6The ERAZER X310 and X315 are two version of the same Lenovo Desktop gaming system. Just by looking at it, you can guess what it is, and to be fair, I find the design to be largely reminiscent of Alienware, except smaller, which is not a bad thing at all.

The tower is actually fairly average in size and has nothing to do with the massive rigs that you may have seen from various “Gaming” PC makers. There are some opportunities for expansion, but I expect many X310 customers to just buy the system and use it “as is”.

Both systems can receive up to 32GB of RAM, and a fast GPU like the NVIDIA GTX 760 (2GB) or an AMD Radeon R9 (2GB, X310 only). Storage-wise, buyers can choose between 256GB of SSD storage, 2TB of hybrid storage or 4TB of hard disk drives (HDD).

At $599+, this is an affordable gaming system which could work great for those who want to play without breaking the bank, and without having to build their own rigs. It’s well known that there’s no price limit when it comes to gaming rigs, but it possible to get a very decent gaming experience at $599.

Lenovo Tab S8, Powered By Intel

Lenovo TAB S8 2

The Lenovo Tab S8 is interesting for two reasons: first, it is a very attractive tablet price aggressively at $199. Secondly, it is powered by Intel, which is slowly but surely gaining some design-wins in the Android space, so it will be interesting to hear from Intel what is the global progress on that front.

Back to the Tab S8, this is a no-nonsense tablet that has a clean and classic design, with a black glass front, metal trims on the side and a soft-paint surface in the back. It features a 1080p IPS display, which is a very nice piece of specifications for a $199 device. Since not all IPS screens are equal, and entry-level tablets like these are often challenged in terms of black levels, so I would recommend keeping an eye on that.

As we said, there’s an Intel processor in here: the Intel Atom Z3745, which is a 22nm quad-core processor clocked at 1.33GHz (with maximum burst at 1.86GHz), 2MB of cache. Its thermal design point (TDP) is 2W. Keep in mind that frequency will depend on the specific device and its thermal design.

With its two speakers located in the front, the Lenovo Tab S8 should be good at producing stereo sound. Front-facing speakers are the best possible setup in terms of audio-energy efficiency since the sound wave goes directly towards the user and does not depend on bouncing on surfaces that may, or may not, be there. Lenovo has also integrated Dolby technology, which typically comes in handy to compensate for low-volume media audio encoding etc. It also tends to “spatialize” the sound and give it more “body”.

Lenovo Y70 17” Gaming Touch Laptop

Lenovo Y70 Touch 6

There are quite a few gaming laptops out there, and some are quite powerful and somewhat heavy, but few are touch-enabled, especially when they have a big 17” display. The Lenovo Y70 is the first such laptop from Lenovo, and Windows 8 users should appreciate the arrival of the touch option in this line of product from Lenovo.

Inside, you will find a fast CPU and GPU combo, namely (up to) the Intel Core i7 and the NVIDIA GTX-860M with 4GB of GDDR5 video memory – that’s a lot. This should allow gamers to play with the highest resolution textures, which is very nice considering how much detail they bring to games.

The display is a 17” full HD (1080p) display, which is effectively the sweet spot for gaming since extra pixels would hurt the frame-rate, while lower resolutions would cut down on the visible details. This is a delicate balance that most gaming PC vendors understand very well.

Gamers can opt for as much as 16GB of RAM, and have storage options of 256GB of SSD storage, or up to 1TB of hybrid storage, which may be the better option, since Battlefield 3 took something like 20GB on my hard drive.

As most gaming laptops, this one features a backlit keyboard (red light), which is nice. I wish that the color was selectable at purchase time, but I haven’t heard anyone complain, so that’s probably not a big deal.

Lenovo Y70 Touch 7The industrial design is pretty slick, with angular shapes that could make one think of the F-117 Stealth Fighter — probably a good reference for many gamers. The Speaker setup in the back is particularly visible, along with an impressive cooling system at the bottom of the chassis.

At about 1” thin, this is not a “thin and light” per say, but it’s still thin for a gaming laptop with that kind of horsepower. Remember that not so long ago, something like the Macbook Pro 17 was that thin, so it’s pretty good. At $1299+, what do you think – hot or not?

cube iwork 7When it comes to the world of tablets, I am quite sure that many of us are familiar with the all conquering iPad from Apple, which does not look as though it is going to relinquish its throne anytime soon. Apart from that, there has also been a slew of Android-powered tablets that were introduced over the years, but what on the Windows front? Well, two Chinese manufacturers intend to add more zip to the world of Windows-powered tablets, where Cube and Ramos have unveiled 7” tablets that will be powered by Intel Atom Bay Trail processors and Windows 8.1 as the operating system of choice.

First of all, the Cube iWork 7 will come with a 7” IPS display at 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, run on a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735G processor, has 1GB RAM, and 16GB of internal memory. Apart from that, it will also boast of HDMI output, carries a rear camera as well as a front-facing shooter for selfie lovers, with an 8-hour battery life rating, all of it crammed into a chassis that is no more than 0.25” thin while tipping the scales at approximately 10 ounces.

As for Ramos, there will be a slew of new tablets that will arrive on the market soon, as it features 7”, 8.9”, and 10” models – with a choice of either Android or Windows 8.1 as the operating system of choice. The Ramos i7s happens to be the smallest of the lot, and it does share similar specifications as those found on the Cube iWork 7, albeit sporting a thicker form factor at 0.35”. Will they ever arrive in the US? Probably not, but chances are you can pick them up online if you really want to have a go.
