Super Smash Bros. For Wii U Breaks Plenty Of Records

Smash bros image 640x359I am quite sure that if you are a Nintendo Wii U owner, you would have given Super Smash Bros. a go by now. In fact, this particular title has broken plenty of records along the way, just like how Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona has bulldozed his way into the world of football’s record books. This extremely popular franchise has move over 14 million Super Smash Bros. games sold in the U.S. alone, and it also carries a Metacritic score of 93, which would make it the highest-rated original game of this generation – sharing the top spot with the Super Mario 3D World title from last year.

It is also the eighth Wii U game to have a Metacritic score of 85 or higher and a user score of 8.5 or higher, and carries the mantle of being the fastest-selling Wii U title ever in the U.S. market. The title which it dethroned? It was yet another first party Nintendo game, Mario Kart 8. Throughout the three day period of November 21 to November 23, it managed to move over 490,000 physical and digital units combined, now how about that? It would be interesting to see how the holiday season will shape up for Nintendo and their first party titles, not to mention this coming Black Friday. [Press Release]

V.360° HD Video Camera Takes Your Recording To New Heights

V360 603x640When it comes to capturing precious moments in life, many of us do use a smartphone camera to get the job done – and some others prefer a dedicated camcorder, as that works just as well. Having said that, if you are the type who would love to push your boundaries, how about settling for something that will be able to do a whole lot more – all without having to break the bank? This is where the 360-degree HD video camera from VSN Mobil comes in – where it is known as the V.360° camera.

Shipping of the V.360° camera will commence from today onward, and it prides itself in being the very first device that can capture 360 degrees of video or still images using its 4K/16 Megapixel imager in full 1080p high definition. It does not matter whether you are having the time of your life, plummeting downward a ski slope, or snorkeling, the V.360° camera would work just fine as it captures the entire experience from all angles, making viewers feel as though they are right smack in the middle of the action.

The asking price for the V.360° camera? Surely $399.00 is not too high a mark, don’t you think so? After all, it is tough enough for most environments, working great in low-light conditions and even when underwater. [Press Release]

GoGlove Lets You Control Your Mobile Device By Touching Fingertips

Say it’s cold outside and you need to wear gloves while you commute, bike, or go about your jog, but what if you need to interact with your smartphone? Does that mean you will need to take off your gloves and put them back on? While there are touchscreen-friendly gloves, users will still need to reach for their phone which in some cases might not be very convenient.

So wouldn’t it be better if you could control all of it via your gloves itself? Well if that sounds like a great idea, then the GoGlove could be a Kickstarter project worth investing in. On the surface the GoGlove looks like a regular pair of gloves, but there are sensors and magnets built into the thumb and fingertips, so that when you touch your thumb and fingers together, a specific action will be performed.

For example you could choose to adjust volume by touching your index and thumb together, or you could choose to pause/play with a thumb and middle finger combo, skip a track, and so on. It can also be used as a remote shutter for your phone’s camera as the glove will pair with smartphones via Bluetooth.

Interestingly enough this sounds an awful lot like the BearTek Gloves we reported on last year, with the main different being that the GoGlove appears to be a lot more lightweight and casual, while the BearTek Gloves appear to be more rugged. Either way if you like what you see/hear, there is still 9 days left to go for the project to be successfully funded.

Microsoft Reportedly Hit With $140 Million Fine For Tax Evasion In China

microsoft logoChina and Microsoft don’t exactly have the best working relationship. China was particularly unhappy when Microsoft ended support for Windows XP and banned Windows 8 from being installed on government computers over spying fears. China also claimed that Microsoft along with the likes of Facebook, Google, and Apple should be punished for alleged spying.

That being said, it seems that Microsoft has also recently been slapped with a $140 million fine over in China for alleged tax evasion, and at the same time have seen its taxes increase by as much as 100 million yuan a year for future payments. This is according to an article published by China’s Xinhua news agency who refers to the company as “M”.

While they did not name Microsoft specifically, the company they mentioned was a US-based company who is one of the world’s biggest 500 firms which established a wholly-owned foreign subsidiary in Beijing. According to Reuters, Microsoft is the only company that fits that description.

While Microsoft did not confirm that they were the company that was fined, they did not deny their involvement either in a statement emailed to Reuters. “In 2012 the tax authorities of China and the United States agreed to a bilateral advanced pricing agreement with regards to Microsoft’s operations in China. China receives tax revenue from Microsoft consistent with the terms of the agreed advanced pricing agreement.”

Microsoft Explains Why The Xbox One Is Sized The Way It Is

xbox oneWith our smartphones and tablets getting smaller and thinner with each passing generation, you would think that consoles would eventually get small and compact as well, right? However if anything they seem to have grown compared to back in the day, or at the very least are roughly around the same size, so what gives?

Well if you’re wondering why your Xbox One isn’t some sleek and sexy machine that you can slide in between your books on your bookshelf, Microsoft’s industrial designer Carl Ledbetter has an explanation for that. Speaking to the folks at MCV, Ledbetter revealed that cooling was the primary reason as to why the Xbox One is sized the way it is.

According to Ledbetter, “Everybody gets frustrated, because what we want is for everything to be wafer thin, not get hot and just be a snap to put together. But the reality is that there are very real issues around cooling when you’re pushing some number of watts in the processor, therefore the thing has to have some size to it.”

This isn’t a particularly new concept as gamers who build their own PC gaming rigs and are concerned about cooling tend to go for the bigger and more airy chassis, although these days there seems to be a surge in popularity in designing gaming rigs based on mini ATX/mini-ITX motherboards. That being said is size a concern for you when choosing your console? Or does it not matter?

Skype For Android Smartphones Updated With Picture-In-Picture Functionality

skype android 640x398Android users might recall that last year, Skype rolled out an updated for Android tablets that brought the picture-in-picture feature to the app. What this means, for those unfamiliar, is that it allows users to continue their Skype conversation with their friend/family member while multitasking in another app, all the while maintaining the video connection.

For example to give you some perspective, on iOS devices, FaceTime’s video is paused whenever the app is closed or when another app is in use. That being said the update was issued nearly a year ago and if you were wondering when the feature would arrive for Android smartphones, wonder no more because it is finally here.

The latest Skype for Android update has introduced the feature to Android smartphones. It is essentially the same feature as the Android version albeit slightly smaller due to the smaller screens on our phones compared to our tablets, but otherwise still functional. Apart from the addition of the new feature, the update is also expected to load faster when opening messages from notifications.

It will also support formatted text like bold, italics, and strikethrough, and for those who speak/read/write in Hindi, there will be native Hindi language support. The photo sharing bug between iOS and other Skype clients also seems to have been resolved in the latest update which you can grab for free from the Google Play Store.

Windows 10 To Get FLAC Support, Audiophiles Rejoice

windows 10 flac 640x381For audiophiles, listening to music in the MP3 format is pretty much unheard of as the MP3 format tends to compress audio, thus resulting in a drop in quality. Most of us might not be able to tell the difference in audio quality, but to some users who might have a keener sense of hearing or better quality audio equipment, the difference is apparently like night and day.

That being said, one of the preferred formats of audiophiles is the FLAC format and the good news is that if you’re a Windows user looking to make the upgrade to Windows 10 upon its release in 2015, it looks like the operating system will be coming with native support for the FLAC format.

This was teased by Gabriel Aul (via WMPowerUser) on Twitter who posted the screenshot above, showing off Windows Media Player supporting the FLAC format. The good news is that the support reportedly will extend beyond Windows Media Player and will apply to any Modern app that uses the built-in codec support.

While we wouldn’t exactly call this a “killer feature”, it is no doubt one that will be welcome by audiophiles, unless of course they already have their own preferred application to playback the FLAC format, but in any case is the native support for FLAC something that you guys have been looking forward to?

Sonim XP7 Announced As IndieGogo Project

sonim xp7When it comes to rugged handsets, there is a growing number of models available for the masses. However, rugged handsets do not look as sleek as a regular smartphone, as they tend to bulk up in order to offer the adequate amount of protection. Well, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Active and the Kyocera Hydro Life happen to be part of this growing niche market, and Sonim intends to take things to the next level with their latest Sonim XP7.

What makes the Sonim XP7 different from the rest of the rugged smartphones out there is this – this happens to be an IndieGogo project, where it is looking for up to $150,000 of funding from the masses in order to become reality. However, one ought to take note that this campaign happens to be part of the “Flexible Funding” program, which means all funding will be received even if the goal is not met.

Just what does the Sonim XP7 carry? For starters, it comes with a 4” Gorilla Glass 2 display with Glove Touch and Blanview Display technologies, runs on a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, has 1GB RAM, a 4,800mAh battery, 16GB of internal memory, and Android 4.4 KitKat in tow, all crammed into a chassis that is rather bulky, measuring 137mm x 72.1mm x 20.8mm.

It will conform to the IP68/69 waterproof/dustproof ratings, which means you can place it in water up to 2 meters for 30 minutes, and it is also capable of withstanding sudden shocks of up to 30G and vibrations from 5Hz to 500Hz to 5Hz. Are you in a hot or cold situation? Fret not, the XP7 too, is temperature resistant as it operates fully from -20° C to 55°C.

Apple Pulls Ahead In Market Capitalization

apple 700bThe Apple gravy train continues to roll forward without any sign of slowing down, where the stock has experienced a 7-to-1 split earlier in the year, before the company embarked on a phenomenal run of new product launches and announcements that has seen its stock price climb up higher and higher. In fact, earlier in November, Apple was theoretically worth more than the whole Russian stock market alone, hitting a new “personal best” this time around – with a market capitalization of $700 billion.

This is due to Apple’s stock hitting the $119.65 mark, making it “achieve” a pre-split price of $837.13. In other words, this points to a huge 50% increase since January earlier this year. Who else can Apple see in their rear view mirror? Quite a distance away, we have Exxon Mobile with a market capitalization of a mere $400 billion, and we have Microsoft in third place (although the software company did manage to jump to second place for a while earlier this month).

Just what other kinds of heights do you think that Apple will be achieve in the future? After all, nothing can continue to go up forever, but as long as the good times roll at the moment, you might want to call your broker for your next investment move.
