St. Louis Blues: An Old Refrain In Grand Jury Decision

WASHINGTON — If you know St. Louis, or Missouri for that matter, you know that the family of Michael Brown had no chance, and that police Officer Darren Wilson would go free.

St. Louis is a lovely place, but legally it can be a toxic police mixture of the Midwestern love of social order and Border State race-based severity.

The city is in some ways on the most tremulous fault line in the history of race in America: The home of W.C. Handy and the blues, of Chuck Berry and rock ‘n roll, of the Dred Scott court decision on runaway slaves.

Not surprisingly, the Missouri state legislature has chosen repeatedly to ignore a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision of 1985, which held that a police officer cannot use lethal force against a fleeing suspect unless the officer has reason to believe the suspect is armed and an immediate threat to public order.

Instead, a police officer in Missouri can shoot a person the officer believes to be a fleeing felon. Period. Not to mention that the officer can shoot one who is moving toward him in a threatening manner.

So the real complaint in Missouri on Monday night should not really be with the county prosecutor, however defensive and cloying he may have been in announcing the grand jury’s failure to indict the officer who shot the teenager.

It is with Missouri, and America, for thumbs-on-the-scale state laws that the federal government — from Abraham Lincoln forward — has only partly ameliorated.

St. Louis is emblematic of the glory and the tragedy of the racial history of which this case is only the latest example. The city was a licentious, anything-goes river town in which the slave trade flourished, and was run in later years by German-American burghers and scions of the slave-holding South who wanted to preserve order, and the Old Order.

At Mardi Gras in St. Louis, there are still clubs severely limited, shall we say, in racial terms.

Some laws are a holdover from those days. They made it easy for the grand jury to return a “no true bill” –- that is, no indictment on any charges -– against Wilson.

Let’s face it: In St. Louis, everyone knows who most of the suspected fleeing felons are. They are black. They are from the north side of St. Louis and similar places. It is the way things have worked since the blues began, and barbecue became a thing, and Michael Brown supposedly swiped some cigars. It was the reported theft of them that made the teen a suspected felon and that sealed his fate.

And let’s make no mistake: St. Louis is as American, for better and for worse, as a city can get.

Darren Wilson Testimony: Michael Brown Looked Like 'A Demon'

WASHINGTON — Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson told a grand jury that Michael Brown looked like a “demon” during the confrontation that ultimately left the teenager dead, according to testimony released on Monday.

Court documents containing Wilson’s testimony were made public shortly after a grand jury decided not to indict the officer for killing Brown, 18, who was unarmed at the time of his death. In his testimony, Wilson portrays Brown as overpowering and aggressive, using phrases like “Hulk Hogan” to describe the 6-foot-4 teen, who was known among relatives and friends as a “gentle giant.”

“And when I grabbed him, the only way I can describe it is I felt like a five-year-old holding onto Hulk Hogan,” Wilson said of his struggle with Brown. “That’s just how big he felt and how small I felt just from grasping his arm.” Wilson told grand jurors that when he and Brown struggled over the officer’s gun, Brown “had the most intense aggressive face. The only way I can describe it, it looks like a demon, that’s how angry he looked.”

Wilson’s testimony largely reiterates the version of events he provided to the St. Louis County Police Department the day after he fatally shot Brown in August. As in previous reports, Wilson said he encountered Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson walking in the middle of the street. A confrontation followed when Brown refused Wilson’s request to walk on the sidewalk. In his testimony, Wilson also said he identified Brown as a possible robbery suspect based on a dispatch he heard earlier.

In his testimony, Wilson repeatedly refers to what he calls “aggression” from Brown that he said led to a struggle and then fatal shooting. “The intense face he had was just not what I expected from any of this,” Wilson said, recalling that Brown punched him through the window of his car.

“I felt that another one of those punches in my face could knock me out or worse,” Wilson said. “I mean it was, he’s obviously bigger than I was and stronger and the, I’ve already taken two to the face and I didn’t think he would, the third one could be fatal if he hit me right …Or at least unconscious and then who knows what would happen to me after that.”

The testimony also reveals that Wilson did not carry a taser and typically doesn’t because “it is not the most comfortable thing.” He told the grand jury he was carrying mace, a baton and a flashlight, but chose not to reach for them because he was trying to shield himself from Brown and did not believe non-lethal options would be “effective.”

His gun, he said, was “the only option,” adding that he warned Brown to get back or he would shoot. According to Wilson, Brown responded by grabbing the gun and telling the officer, “You are too much of a pussy to shoot me.”

Wilson said after a couple of unsuccessful attempts, he fired two shots from his car, prompting Brown to run from the vehicle. Wilson said he then got out of the car, called for backup and pursued Brown.

“He made like a grunting, like aggravated sound and comes back toward me,” Wilson said of Brown’s reaction.

He added that he told Brown to get on the ground, and fired the fatal shots when the teenager charged him.

“At this point it looked like he was almost bulking up to run through the shots, like it was making him mad that I’m shooting at him,” Wilson said. “And the face that he had was looking straight through me, like I wasn’t even there, I wasn’t even anything in his way.”

“I shoot a series of shots,” Wilson added. “I don’t know how many I shot, I just know I shot it.”

Wilson fired 12 shots. Photos released of the officer after the grand jury’s decision on Monday show some bruising on his face and the back of his neck, but no serious injuries.

Several eyewitnesses have disputed the notion that Brown charged at Wilson. Although they support that a confrontation occurred, some eyewitnesses said Brown looked like he was trying to surrender and had his hands in the air when Wilson fatally shot him.

Brown’s death prompted massive demonstrations in Ferguson and reopened a discussion on law enforcement and racial profiling. Protests erupted once again on Monday night when it was announced that Wilson would not be indicted.

One Goal Every Parent Should Have (VIDEO)

“Parenting is not a sprint; it’s a marathon,” says Dr. Phil, explaining that all of the daily decisions you make and all of your child’s interactions over time accumulate to define who your child will become.

“The long-range goal is to prepare kids to become independent,” Dr. Phil explains in his Tip of the Day. “Even your discipline should be done in a way that they will internalize it so that they can discipline themselves when you’re not around. It’s so important that you understand that you are raising adults, not children. Will they be independent? Will they be confident? Will they be self-reliant? Will they grow up not needing everyone else’s OK?”

Kickstarter Project Suspended Due To Its Nature

blood sport1It is not very often that we see a Kickstarter project fail because it was suspended, but rather, due to the fact that it did not manage to raise the necessary amount of funds. Having said that, there is one particularly bloody (literally speaking) Kickstarter project that did make waves some time last week, only for it to have been suspended. The Kickstarter project in question is known as Blood Sport, where it touts to carry a game controller that is matched to a blood collection unit, allowing it to draw your blood in real life and real time each time you experience some “damage” in the game.

Funding for “Blood Sport: The Ultimate in Immersive Gaming” was suspended a few hours ago, where it raised a mere $3,390 in total out of the $250,000 Canadian dollars required. According to the folks behind Blood Sport, the Kickstarter page did not feature any claim that it will see action at home, but rather, the CAD$250,000 was asked to offset the costs of its development before it embarks on a trans-Canada blood-donation tour. Of course, backers will not be offered a unit, but they have received an invitation to head to Toronto to test it out prior.

Far Cry 4 Features Minimum Of Two Alternate Endings

far cry4 640x640We are all very flexible people – in fact, we love variety in life. After all, having the same, linear life can be very boring in the long run, although there are some personalities out there who absolutely love the predictability of things in life. Having said that, games have, for too long, followed a single track when it comes to the ending, where regardless of which particular route that you have taken, you would end up with the same ending. Not so with Far Cry 4, as we have learned that it will boast of a minimum of two alternate endings, and these alternate endings will be triggered by player actions during the prologue.

The very first alternate ending in Far Cry 4 was discovered quite some time ago, and if you happen to be around at the beginning of the game, it is all too easy to bring the entire story to a quick conclusion. Creative director Alex Hutchinson has hung a carrot in front of the proverbial stick for Far Cry 4 gamers, citing that there is also another alternate ending that can be accessed, or triggered, in a similar scene.

It remains to be seen whether this will lead one to an immediate ending, or if the actions will see a delayed ramification. What do you think?

Michael Brown's Family Reacts To Grand Jury Decision

The family of Michael Brown released a statement Monday evening in response to a grand jury’s decision not to indict the police officer who fatally shot Brown in August.

The statement, like that of President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, urged peaceful protest from their supporters.

We are profoundly disappointed that the killer of our child will not face the consequence of his actions.

While we understand that many others share our pain, we ask that you channel your frustration in ways that will make a positive change. We need to work together to fix the system that allowed this to happen.

Join with us in our campaign to ensure that every police officer working the streets in this country wears a body camera.

We respectfully ask that you please keep your protests peaceful. Answering violence with violence is not the appropriate reaction.

Let’s not just make noise, let’s make a difference.

Notable members of the black community have taken to social media to voice their reactions to the grand jury’s decision, as have countless concerned citizens.
