Mitsubishi Diamond Display is world’s largest, debuts in Times Square

diamond-vision-screenNew York’s Times Square is where all the action is at. After all, we have seen how Mario’s 3D world ended up at the iconic place slightly more than a year ago. This time around, the next attention grabbing thing to appear on Times Square would be Mitsubishi’s Diamond Vision display, where those over at 1535 Broadway will be able to check out this humongous display – just remember to wipe the drool from your mouths once you’re done gaping at it in awe.

The Diamond Vision display will offer more than what 4k ultra-high-definition pixel density has at the moment, despite the entire screen measuring a mammoth 25,610-square feet, while offering a pixel density of 2,368 x 10,048. In other words, this would be the highest resolution LED video display around the world, and this installation is made possible thanks to a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Vision AVL-ODT10 large scale display which delivers true 10mm pixel pitch spacing. Apart from that, it will make use of a 3-in-1 surface mount LED (SMD) that boasts of Mitsubishi Electric’s revolutionary Real Black LED technology.

Todd Stih, national sales manager, Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, Inc., was proud to take note that “with 23,793,664 individual physical pixels, a video quality display of this size and density is a milestone in the industry. It exceeds 4k resolution by nearly 15 million pixels.”

As this unique billboard, if you can call it that, sports high resolution and pixel density, Mitsubishi Electric has supplied a special control system in order to provide pixel-to-pixel mapping of content and life-like images. The entire image area of the screen can then be segmented to show off multiple pixel-for-pixel 1080 HD or 4k images simultaneously, while the display canvas itself paves the way for a couple of 4k images to be displayed side by side, where the pixels will remain in the height and width for other content. Surely this coming New Year countdown is going to be different.

Facebook Introduces Groups As A Standalone App

facebook groups

The Groups feature on Facebook essentially mirrors the functionality of your News Feed albeit at a smaller scale. Groups can consist of your friends, family members or acquaintances and discussions can revolve around a particular topic or just about anything. This feature is used by nearly 700 million active users who share 2.5 billion photos, posts, comments, likes and more every single month in countless Groups. Facebook sees potential for further growth and for that it has busted out Facebook Groups as a separate mobile application.

Anything and everything that you share in any Group is visible only to the members of that particular group. So introducing a separate app can also be viewed as a move by Facebook to offer another way for users to share stuff with a very tight group of people, without affecting their overall user experience of the world’s biggest social network.

When you fire up the Facebook Groups app you will see all of your Groups in one place. The ones you use most frequently are listed at the top. A new group can be easily created by tapping Create. It is also possible to track group-related notifications from within the app.

The Discover tab will list group suggestions based on the Pages that you’ve liked, as well as factors like where you live and what groups your friends have joined. Those who access Groups through the app will be able to use this feature through desktop and the main Facebook app as well.

Facebook Groups app will be available later today for both iOS and Android.

Middle-Earth: Shadow Of Mordor Now Out On Previous Generation Consoles

shadow of mordorI suppose those hardcore gamers among you out there do not need any kind of reminding, but the single player Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is now available on the Sony PS3 as well as the Xbox 360 over in North America, which would definitely give those two previous generation consoles some attention after taking into consideration how both the Xbox One as well as the Sony PS4 are on the receiving end of the likes of Escape Dead Island, Far Cry 4, Dragon Age: Inquisition, WWE K15, and GTA 5, depending on which part of the world you reside in at the moment.

Do not shun Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor for rolling out on the previous generation consoles – this does not mean that the game is some sort of second tier title, as the action RPG that is set within The Lord of the Rings universe managed to ring in (pun not intended) some rather rave reviews when it was introduced on the PC and current generation consoles just last month. Hopefully the overall gaming experience would be as consistent as the released versions, and for our friends who live across the pond, do expect your copy of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor to be made available this coming November 21st.

Nokia Store To Close Down For Good Next Year

microsoft logo1From next year onward, it does look as though the Opera Mobile Store will see off the Nokia Store, as it replaces the latter so that you will be able to get your app fix on your respective featurephones and other Symbian-powered devices from Nokia, and of course, the Nokia X, which is powered by a forked version of Android. This particular change will be implemented from the first quarter of next year onward, and those who happen to own selected Nokia handsets will be sent over to the Opera Mobile Store, where they can then apply for an account with Opera if they haven’t done so already.

The entire migration process from the Nokia Store to the Opera Mobile Store ought to be completed sometime before July 2015 rolls around. When that happens, the entire Nokia Store will be closed down for good. At this point in time, the Opera Mobile Store will boast of 300,000 apps and games, where it already has the relevant infrastructure in place to handle millions of downloads each day. With the closure of the Nokia Store, the Opera Mobile Store will then end up as the third largest app store around the world where downloads are concerned, featuring support for more than 7,500 devices.

Samsung’s Flexible Display For Phones Expected By End Of Next Year

samsung logo 640x480

A recent report suggested that Samsung is looking towards advanced display technologies to help fuel its growth in the smartphone market. Flexible displays are likely to be a part of that plan. During the Samsung Investor Forum 2014 in New York a top company executive revealed that Samsung Display will launch a flexible display for phones by the end of next year. This flexible display will be for smartphones which will have the capability of being folded in half.

Lee Chang-hoon, vice president of Samsung Display’s business strategic team, said that the company expects to secure production capacity of 30,000 to 40,000 flexible displays each month by the end of 2015. If this goes according to plan, Chang-hoon claims that “there will be no company that has this great production capacity by 2016,” except Samsung of course.

He also mentioned that Samsung will provide its customers with a product which will have this flexible display, however nothing has been set in stone regarding that product, so we’ll have to wait and see what shape that smartphone ultimately takes.

The company is planning an expansion of its flexible-display smartphones following the warm response that Galaxy Note Edge has received in the market. This particular smartphone has a display that curves to the right side.

Samsung also revealed during the Investor Forum 2014 that it plans to release up to 30 percent fewer smartphone models in the coming year.

OpenWorm Project Robot Thinks It Is A Worm

As a man thinks, so is he. Would the same mantra apply to that of robots? Apparently so, as what you can see in the video above happens to be known as the OpenWorm Project. The OpenWorm Project happens to be a LEGO robot that is not elongated or slimy in any way, but it has been programmed in such a way where it thinks it is a worm – thanks to it sporting the artificial mind of a worm. This is one worm where you will be able to slice into half to have it end up as two separate organisms for sure.

The OpenWorm Project is called so as project researchers have managed to map the brain of the small nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), which is well known for its squirminess and capacity of a mere 302 neurons. Baby steps are important steps after all, aren’t they?

One of the founders of OpenWorm, Timothy Busbice, had successfully applied the brain mapping in order to come up with software that is capable of mimicking the manner of an actual neural network, before being “installed” into a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robot which subsequently saw it begin to wiggle. Pretty neat, don’t you think so?

Twitter Search Can Now Find Any Tweet Ever Posted

twitter crime

Twitter’s search engine was developed in a way that it provided users with swift access to what millions of people were tweeting at that point in time, which is why it began to be increasingly looked at as a great source of crowdfunding information and following events in real-time. This meant that after a few days every tweet had to be deleted from the search feature’s index to make room for newer tweets. That changes today with a major update to the Twitter Search feature, it is now capable of finding any tweet ever posted since the micro-blogging network launched back in 2006.

Previously in order to search for old tweets that no longer appeared in search, users either had to scroll through the entire timeline of the person who posted the tweet, or use third party services like Topsy or Tweet Machine. They’re still widely used by people to locate tweets that have been deleted on Twitter.

The updated search feature lets you find any tweet from the hundreds of millions that have been posted since 2006. Currently it works with rudimentary keyword searches but Twitter will improve the feature so that it can tackle complex queries as well. It will only display tweets from public accounts, tweets that hide behind protected accounts won’t show up.

This feature has been rolled out today but it will take some time before it goes live for all Twitter users. Twitter explains the mechanics behind the updated search feature on its blog, its a lengthy read but it will certainly satisfy your curiosity about how the company made this possible.

Grand Theft Auto V Out On PS4

gtav ps4Good things come to those who wait, or so the mantra goes. Having said that, it is then quite the relief, isn’t it, for Sony PS4 owners to finally see a copy of Grand Theft Auto V appear on store shelves? I would like to think that there is a whole generation of gamers out there who have yet to experience the Grand Theft Auto universe, which can be quite surprising. Well, if you own the PS4 and have not tasted GTA goodness before, perhaps today is the day where all of that will change, where you will play the role of the protagonist by visiting Los Santos and Blaine County, taking advantage of the all-new First Person Mode along the way.

Other features found in Grand Theft Auto V include the ability of the game to support up to 30-players in GTA Online, not to mention being able to check out a rather impressive scope of major visual and technical upgrades, where among them will include new weapons, vehicles and activities, wildlife, denser traffic, enhanced damage and weather effects. Heck, even the soundtrack itself has received an update, where there will be more than a hundred new songs, among others.

Grand Theft Auto Online will also see the inclusion of all existing gameplay upgrades and Rockstar-created content that has rolled out ever since it hit the PS3. Existing players have the added advantage of continuity by transferring their GTA Online characters and progression to the PS4, while being on the receiving end of exclusive new content in both GTAV and GTA Online. Apps Being Designed For Apple Watch

apple watcheditionWhile the Apple Watch has not quite received a concrete release date for the masses just yet, and neither do we know anything else about its battery life, this does not mean that there will be no interest in this piece of wearable technology when it is made available. Chances are, it might spark off a smartwatch frenzy, just like how the iPhone did for the smartphone market. Having said that, what is the whole point of having fantastic looking hardware when there are no apps running on it? It would be akin to a Ferrari running without fuel. Hence, we have word that developers are starting to work on apps for the Apple Watch.

Developers can now start to work on WatchKit apps prior to the mass availability of Apple Watch, where innovative WatchKit apps, actionable notifications and Glances can be enjoyed. iOS 8.2 beta SDK would enable developers to make use of the WatchKit so that they might come up with the next breakthrough new app, in addition to Glances and other actionable notifications which were specially designed for the Apple Watch interface, alongside new technologies like Force Touch, Digital Crown and Taptic Engine.

The iOS 8.2 SDK beta that includes the WatchKit is now available for iOS Developer Program members here. [Press Release]
