The great promise of the 20th century was that everything would one day be operated by push-button. Even hunting was supposed to become automatic, as you can see in the invention above from 1922.
Well, here’s a cooooool finding. Take any piece of electronic equipment you can think of and its circuits are powered by, yes, electrons. But a new experiment takes us one step closer to “atomtronic circuits” made of supercold quantum matter that can be reconfigured on the fly.
Early this fall, Intel announced its first “luxury smart bracelet” built in conjunction with Opening Ceremony and aimed specifically at the ladiez. Today, we finally got to spend some time with the device and can say with total confidence: yep, that is one pretty… beeper?
What does the stereotypical Beats fan look like? Or Apple, HTC, BlackBerry? You’ve probably got some pretty strong images in your head right now, but I can almost guarantee they don’t jive with those on market research firm YouGov’s new profiling…
Are you so enthralled with Interstellar that you’re determined to see it a second, third or ninth time? AMC Theatres might have you covered. The chain has just unveiled its first-ever Unlimited Ticket for the sci-fi epic; if you’re an AMC Stubs…
Grand Theft Auto V was clearly bound for current game consoles, regardless of its late-generation appearance on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The world of Los Santos is even more gorgeous in the latest iteration, and it comes with a mess of additions:…
Everyone knew Intel would craft some wearable gadgets. Hardly any of us expected it to be, well, this insane thing. That bangle — the MICA — lives at the less-bizarre-by-the-day intersection between technology and high fashion. Intel and its design…
A public-private consortium will be transforming the old payphones in New York City into Wi-Fi hotspots that offer gigabit internet speeds. This will become the largest Wi-Fi network of its kind in the world, both in terms of the sheer scale of the network, and the fact that it will offer access to superfast internet.
Earlier this year New York started accepting proposals on how to improve these payphones which are rarely used anymore since almost everyone has access to a cellphone. The consortium had the winning bid. It will transform these payphones by installing 11-inch kiosks made out of aluminum called “Links.”
Constructions on these kiosks will begin in 2015 and the city claims that the first few Links will be up and running by the end of next year. The city has plans to install over 10,000 Links over New York’s five boroughs.
The Links, measuring 9.5-foot tall, will provide a 150 foot Wi-Fi radius and will have Android tablets built-in with apps that provide access to city services, interactive maps and more. People will still be able to make calls through these Links, and it won’t cost them anything to make a call to any one of the fifty states. They’ll also serve as charging stations for gadgets.
Expected cost for the Links’ roll out is $200 million but with advertising the city expects to generate $500 million over 12 years. NYC will also be allowed to use these displays for public service announcements.
The consortium that won the bid is called City Bridge. It is a partnership between Qualcomm, hardware maker Comark, advertising company Titan and design firm Control Group.
Security conscious people can find solace in the fact that this will be the first municipal Wi-Fi network in the country that will offer an encrypted connection to the internet.

As 2014 draws to an end we can’t help but wonder about the amazing technology that we’ll get to see and experience in the coming year. For technology fans the new year always kicks off with a big bang, courtesy of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It is an annual gathering that takes place in early January and features a plethora of consumer electronics products from a wide variety of manufacturers. Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets get a lot of attention at CES, which is why it is believed that Huawei will unveil the Ascend P8 at CES 2015.
So far not much is known about the Huawei Ascend P8, the successor to Huawei Ascend P7, which has already been available in the market for quite some time.
According to reports the smartphone is going to touch a 5.2-inch 1080p display with a 2.5D curved glass. The P8 is expected to have a metal build like its predecessor with a back cover made out of “porcelain texture.”
Under the hood this device may be powered by a HiSilicon Krin 930 SoC built using TSMC’s 16nm process. It may have an octa-core processor, and it is not known right now what the clock speed of this processor precisely is.
It remains to be seen if Huawei’s latest smartphone gets any significant traction outside of China, and whether or not the company decides to actually sell it in markets other than its home turf.

We had been hearing that Apple was working on a new incremental software update for iOS and today it has finally landed. A few moments back Apple started rolling out iOS 8.1.1 for all iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models. The new software brings a host of performance improvements and bug fixes which will certainly make it worth your while if you jump on iOS 8.1.1 as quickly as it drops in your region.
In the changelog for iOS 8.1.1 Apple notes that users on all supported devices who update to this latest firmware will get the usual slew of bug fixes and performance improvements. It also mentions that this update will improve performance on two old iOS devices, the iPad 2 and iPhone 5S.
It is not uncommon for old hardware to have problems with new software. iOS 8.x is probably the last major update that is released for these two devices so it would only serve Apple’s interests if the latest software on those old devices performed as well as it does on newer models.
As always the update is being rolled out over the air. You will receive a prompt on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch when the iOS 8.1.1 update arrives for your particular device. Those who are jailbroken on iOS 8.x. should hold off on updating the firmware because it hasn’t been confirmed as of now whether or not iOS 8.1.1 patches the exploit used by Pangu iOS 8 jailbreak tool.
