YouTube Music Key is the streaming service for people who don't like streaming services

YouTube’s entry into the music streaming market certainly wasn’t without a few raised eyebrows. First of all, Google (which owns YouTube) already has a music streaming service. Secondly, how is it going to handle all the unofficial music, remixes, pa…

Natalie Portman Rumored To Star In Steve Jobs Movie

natalie portman

Many people around the world are looking forward to the movie on Steve Jobs that’s written by Aaron Sorkin, based on the official biography of the Apple co-founder penned by Walter Isaacson. So far the cast has not been confirmed even though some very big names have been rumored for roles, including but not limited to Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale. While both of them were rumored to play jobs, word on the street is that Natalie Portman has been approached for a role in the Steve Jobs movie as well.

It is not clear what role Portman has been offered but there’s speculation that she might play the role of Jobs’s daughter Lisa. Jobs reconciled with his estranged daughter later in life.

Aaron Sorkin has already suggested that Lisa is going to play a crucial role in this film which is essentially divided into three parts of thirty minutes that cover three of the most crucial product launches in the history of Apple.

So far it is also unclear who is going to direct the movie. At one point David Fincher was also believed to be attached to the project. As for who will play Jobs, the latest name being floated around is that of German actor Michael Fassbender, though as yet Universal hasn’t confirmed the cast. The movie has ended up with Universal after Sony put it in turnaround and sold the rights for some $30 million.

Sapphire Displays Rumored For Next Generation iPhone

iPhone 6 review 12 640x426

Now this is one rumor that’s going to ring a lot of bells. Throughout this year we kept hearing that the iPhone 6 is going to come with a sapphire display. In September when Apple unveiled both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus it made no mention of sapphire in the display. Now though it is being rumored that the next generation iPhone, not due for nearly an entire year, is going to have a sapphire display.

The reason why iPhone 6 doesn’t have a sapphire display was recently detailed in a report. Apple’s supplier GT Advanced Technology wasn’t quite capable enough to keeping up with Apple’s sapphire demands. The sapphire blocks it did produce were not up to the company’s quality requirements which is why the plan probably had to be scrapped for iPhone 6.

Now though reports claim Apple might look towards Foxconn, its long time manufacturing partner, to help out here as well. Foxconn is reportedly building a display factory in Zhengzhou, China where it will manufacture sapphire displays for the next generation iPhone.

Only last week it was reported that Foxconn is also going to open up a new plant in Taiwan that will be dedicated to the manufacturing of displays for the iPhone.

Foxconn is certainly capable enough for this undertaking though it remains to be seen whether the sapphire displays that it makes are up to Apple’s standards. If the arrangement works out who knows, perhaps we really might see sapphire displays in the next generation iPhone.

Lenovo Wearable Devices Reportedly Enter Production Soon

lenovo yoga 2 pro review 7 640x424

Given that it has become sort of a trend these days to make wearable devices, it really doesn’t surprise anyone when another company jumps into the fray. Things are heating up in the wearable space as new smartwatches, fitness monitors and activity trackers are being introduced frequently. Lenovo seems to be thinking along the same lines. There’s a report saying that the company’s wearable devices are going to enter production very soon.

The report, which originates from China, says that China-based electronics manufacturer Fenda Technology has announced that it has been tapped by Lenovo as a supplier for its wearable devices. This means that a Lenovo wearable device is likely to enter mass production in the very near future.

The report also mentions that Fenda Technology declined to talk more about the details of this wearable device, so it can’t be said for sure right now what it might be. There is speculation though that it might be a smart wristband.

With the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 just around the corner there a huge possibility that Lenovo might show it off there. CES 2015 takes place between January 6-9 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pricing and release time frame will only be made public once the product has been formally shown off, so we’ll have to wait for over a month to find out if Lenovo really does have a wearable device up its sleeve.

11 Box Office Turkeys From 2014

Box office figures have been down this year to such an extent that even the hits are considered a disappointment. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1,” which scored the year’s biggest opening at $121.8 million, made 23 percent less during its debut weekend than last year’s “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” It’s a figure that has caused some to question the franchise’s future viability — “Can the franchise rebound?” wrote Steven Zeitchik in a sky-is-falling piece for the Los Angeles Times — but at least Lionsgate shareholders and Katniss Everdeen supporters can take solace in the fact that they aren’t on this list. Ahead, 11 of the year’s most notable box office misses. It’s turkey time (gobble gobble).

“Men, Women & Children”

box office bombs

Total theaters: 608
Total gross: $705,908

Jason Reitman’s “Labor Day” was considered a huge flop, and that film grossed 19 times more than “Men, Women & Children.” Released on Oct. 1, the much maligned drama will arrive on Blu-ray in December.

“Wish I Was Here”

wish i was here movie

Total theaters: 753
Total gross: $3,591,299

Zach Braff raised $3.1 million on Kickstarter to make “Wish I Was Here,” partially on the expectation that he would deliver another “Garden State.” Financially, at least, he did not: “Garden State” earned seven times what “Wish I Was Here” did in North American theaters.

“Bad Words”

bad words bateman

Total theaters: 1,074
Total gross: $7,779,614

Not that anyone expected “Bad Words” to make “Horrible Bosses” money, but at $7.7 million it earned even less than the forgotten “Extract,” which starred Bateman and a then-hirsute Ben Affleck.

“Vampire Academy”

vampire academy

Total theaters: 2,676
Total gross: $7,791,979

Neither the new “Mean Girls” nor next “Twilight,” “Vampire Academy” grossed under $8 million in total at the box office. A crowdfunded sequel was initially planned, but the gambit only raised 17 percent of its goal. Whether a second film happens is now unclear.

“Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return”

legends of oz

Total theaters: 2,658
Total gross: $8,462,027

“Legends of Oz” was legendary, but not in the way its investors likely hoped. The film scored the worst-ever opening for an animated feature debuting on more than 2,500 screens.

“Sabotage”

sabotage

Total theaters: 2,486
Total gross: $10,508,518

He’ll be back? “Sabotage” was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s lowest grossing movie in 29 years. It even made less money than “The Last Stand.”

“Winter’s Tale”

winters tale colin farrell

Total theaters: 2,965
Total gross: $12,600,231

Will Smith is in this movie! (He plays Lucifer.)

“Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For”

sin city 2

Total theaters: 2,894
Total gross: $13,757,804

The original “Sin City” film grossed $11.8 million on its opening day in 2005. The sequel made $13.7 million … in 49 days.

“I, Frankenstein”

i frankenstein

Total theaters: 2,753
Total gross: $19,075,290

Audiences, not interested.

“Transcendence”

transcendence

Total theaters: 3,455
Total gross: $23,022,309

At $10.8 million, “Transcendence” had the 48th-worst saturated opening ever (more than 3,000 theaters). That puts the $100-million budgeted Johnny Depp film in league with Taylor Lautner’s “Abduction” (49th) and Stephenie Meyer’s “The Host” (47th). Lo for the days of even “The Lone Ranger.”

“Pompeii”

pompeii

Total theaters: 2,658
Total gross: $23,219,748

Ashes to ashes.

Diffused Congruence Podcast: <i>Serial</i>'s Rabia Chaudry

Since its launch last October, the Serial podcast has taken the country by storm.
Reporter Sarah Koenig’s gripping investigation into the 1999 murder of high schooler Hae Min Lee, and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed for the killing — a crime for which he maintains his innocence to this day — has set records and spurred conversation with how it combines the intrigue of a weekly procedural with broader questions about cultural assimilation and the peculiarities of the legal system. For this episode, Parvez and I are joined by
Rabia Chaudry, an attorney and civil rights activist who is a family friend of Syed’s, who first brought this case to Koenig’s attention. Harvard Extension Student Allegedly Fell Naked Through Bathroom Ceiling, Bit Man's Ear Off

A 26-year-old Harvard Extension School student is being held without bail after he allegedly fell naked through the ceiling of a women’s bathroom in Boston’s Logan Airport and then bit an 84-year-old man’s ear off, according to CBS News.

The Associated Press has more on the story:

B

OSTON (AP) — A Boston man who police say fell naked through the ceiling of a women’s bathroom at Boston’s airport and then assaulted an elderly man has been ordered held without bail pending a hearing next week.

Cameron Shenk was arraigned Wednesday on charges that include attempted murder, assault and battery on a person over 60, and lewd and lascivious conduct.

Police say the 26-year-old Shenk fell through the ceiling at about noon Saturday. He had allegedly sneaked into the bathroom, undressed inside a stall and climbed into the ceiling crawl space. Police say he then fled the bathroom and assaulted an 84-year-old man.

Shenk’s lawyer said he is a student studying economics at Harvard Extension School and has no history of mental illness.

A hearing to determine whether he is dangerous to the public is scheduled Monday.

Selene Chin: Ground Yourself with the Right Skills

This is part of the #CareerAdvice series – featuring successful professionals who share their advice to people who would want to take their career to the next level.

One of the main things that hiring managers would ask candidates during a job interview is whether the applicants consider themselves team players or leaders.

2014-11-27-SeleneChinManagingDirector.jpg
Selene Chin, Managing Director at Dog Digital Asia

Selene Chin, Managing Director of Dog Digital Asia, recommends for those who are just starting their career to ground yourself with the right skills, avoid having a fixed mindset as an individual and as a team player – focus on giving your best as you represent the work of your whole team.

She also shares how having an open mind and focusing on giving her best has allowed her to adapt to the ever changing world of marketing and how it has become an essential part of her professional growth.

Can you tell us a bit about how you started your career? What are some of your best moments in your professional life?

My first job was with a mid-sized local advertising agency. I think it was the only one in Singapore with a printing press with it.

I would sit with the print shop manager and learn all I can about printing. I had to conduct briefings in two different dialects sometimes to the production, studio and media teams. Those were the days when we had no computer, when we had an in-house media department. It was a very tough entry into working life.

There were no trainings – clients and colleagues were very demanding, everyone expected you to know your work on your first day. To keep myself abreast of the developments, I kept a notebook where I recorded what I learnt every day, whether it be something I saw or something that happened to me.

I wouldn’t have said this at that time, but looking back, I think it was a fascinating period.

My best moments – there were too many. I remember in one of my first digital agencies when I was trying to explain to a client over the phone what ‘caching’ means as I was searching for it on Ask Jeeves on my computer!

Those early dot-com days were invigorating times, everything was new and fresh to us. We didn’t even have names for half the things we did!

Then there was the time when I was a Business Director of an established digital agency. We were on a new business winning streak. My partners in crime – the CD and the Strategy Director devised a way of working that would eventually shape our management styles and our respective agency structures.

When we all went our separate ways to take on leadership positions in different agencies, I think I would always drew back on those positive moments as I went along my career – that feeling of fearlessness and experimentation; and that powerful feeling of being with a team of peers.

If you could advise your 20-year-old-self today, what would tell her?

I was a late bloomer. At 20 years old, I was very much still in my own world, absorbed in my own issues.

I thought the world revolved all around me. To be honest, I won’t change much of how I lived my life then.

At that age, you want to have the space to discover yourself, your dreams.

If I have to tell my 20 year old self something, it will be to just stop rationalizing and keep exploring. That, and that my then-boyfriend was a waste of time 🙂

What has been the most valuable advice you’ve ever gotten when you were facing challenges in your career?

It wasn’t so much of an advice, but a lesson. I was in my first job, and I had just broken up with my boyfriend. We were rushing out artwork for a demanding client. It was late and it was just me and the Art Director who had stayed back.

I was very much focused on nursing my pain and was distracted. But there was a moment when I looked up and I saw my teammate was so focused on getting the work done so she could rush back home before her daughter goes to bed.

At that moment, I saw how all our work was connected, how in being distracted, I have caused her to stay late.

These days, when I talk to the young ones in the industry, this will be one of the first things I tell them.

Remember that you are part of a team, your every action will affect the work of your teammates.

Remember that when you present work, you are presenting the work of your team. Treat it with care, treat it with respect, give it your very best.

What would you advise the millennial just starting with their career or aiming to take their careers to the next level?

Don’t start off with a fixed path in mind. Be open minded, be humble, ground yourself with all the right skills… and then, you can start to reach for the stars.
