European Parliament Passes Resolution To Break Up Google

google logo 2011 10 25

Earlier this week it was reported that the European Parliament was drafting a resolution which would express the idea that Google search should be unbundled from the various other businesses that Google conducts. The company was obviously not too pleased about this development and even if it didn’t respond directly, there were multiple reports that claimed executives at the company were furious about the political nature of this resolution. Nevertheless the European Parliament passed the resolution today.

It merits mentioning here that this was a non-binding resolution so its not like Google is under any obligation to do what’s written in the resolution, which basically calls for the “unbundling of search engines from other commercial services.” The resolution states that this is necessary for “competitive conditions” inside the digital single market.

Even if the European Parliament cannot make Google act on this resolution this does draw the attention of the European Commission, which initiates Europe-based legislation, as well as EU member states who can independently force Google to unbundle its search and ad business at least within their territories.

The European Commission has previously been able to force Google to change the label of free-to-play games, so it remains to be seen what line it takes on this matter, and whether Google is going to have to make such a decision somewhere down the road.

Stop Twitter From Tracking Apps On Your Phone

twitter crime

Yesterday Twitter announced “app graph.” Its the name Twitter is giving to a new collection of data which will basically track the apps you install or already have installed on your iOS or Android device. The company says that this app data will be helpful in building a more tailored experience for you on Twitter. If you don’t want it to do that on your device then follow these instructions to opt-out of it.

Once the feature is enabled you will receive a notification in the Twitter app on your iPhone, scrolling past that notification is enough to opt into app graph. Though opting out of it is certainly isn’t as easy as opting into it.

Nevertheless the procedure to stop Twitter from tracking apps on your phone is pretty simple. If you haven’t seen the notification as yet then iOS users need to turn on “Limit ad tracking” and Android users have to turn on “Opt out of interest based-ads” found in Accounts > Google > Ads. This will stop the feature before its even enabled for you.

Those who already scrolled past the notification or don’t recall if they did or not need to access the settings in their Twitter app and locate the “Tailor Twitter based on my apps” checkbox. Uncheck it. if the checkbox is not there it means app graph hasn’t been enabled for you. This has to be done for each account individually so if you have multiple accounts you’ll have to perform the procedure separately on each account.

Assassin’s Creed Unity DLC Goes Free To Atone For Bugs

assassins creed unity e3 2014 2 640x359

Anyone who picked up Assassin’s Creed Unity on the day it was released would know that the game had too many bugs from the get go. Many were wondering why Ubisoft had released the game in this state anyway. Even though it got down to fixing those bugs right away and started quickly releasing patches, still that didn’t take the pain out of gamers’ experience. In order to atone for the botched release of this title Ubisoft is offering the first DLC for Assassin’s Creed Unity absolutely free.

This has become sort of a trend now. PS4 exclusive Driveclub players experienced issues with online gameplay following the release and to make up for their troubles the developer offered something along the same lines. I’m sure many gamers would just like the developers to fine tune these games before they’re released to save us all the trouble.

Apart from apologizing on behalf of the entire team the CEO of Ubisoft Montreal & Toronto, Yannis Mallat, confirmed that the Assassin’s Creed Unity Dead Kings DLC will be offered free for everyone. Season Pass holders will get the choice of one additional game from a selection of Ubisoft titles for free.

He also revealed that the third patch for Assassin’s Creed Unity is being released which brings a variety of fixes for specific issues relating to the game’s stability and performance.

Nigeria Parliament: Shell Should Pay $3.6 Billion For 2011 Bonga Oil Spill

WARRI, Nigeria (AP) — A parliament committee in Nigeria says that Shell should pay $3.6 billion in fines as punishment for a 2011 oil spill.

The committee’s decision, made Wednesday, is non-binding. The spill occurred in 2011 of the Bonga oil field.

In 2011, the National Oil Spill Detection Response Agency estimated that around 40,000 barrels were spilled when a tanker was loading crude at the offshore platform operated by Shell’s subsidiary SNEPCO, but SNEPCO attributed the spill to “snapped loading hose under water.”

The United Nations Environment Program has repeatedly criticized Shell for not doing enough to clean up oil spills and maintain its infrastructures in Nigeria.

Shell Nigeria is half owned by the Nigerian state.

Here's What The Obamas Are Eating For Thanksgiving Dinner

This year, President Barack Obama and his family are spending Thanksgiving at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, where they’ll dine on turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes — and six kinds of pie.

Here’s this year’s menu, as provided by the White House press office:

Dinner:

Thyme Roasted Turkey
Honey-Baked Ham
Cornbread Stuffing
Oyster Stuffing
Braised Winter Greens
Macaroni and Cheese
Sweet Potato Gratin
Mashed Potatoes
Green Bean Casserole
Dinner Rolls

Dessert:

Banana Cream Pie
Coconut Cream Pie
Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie
Pecan Pie
Cherry Pie

As the Associated Press notes, it’s Obama’s responsibility to pick up the tab for the meal — as he does every other day of the year:

Gary Walters, who was chief White House usher for many years, said the payment rule dates back to 1800 when the White House was first occupied by President John Adams and there was no staff. Presidents brought staff with them and paid for everything.

Congress gradually began spending money to maintain an official White House staff to oversee operations and maintenance, but presidents continued to pay for personal expenses.

What it boils down to, Walters said, is that the White House is first and foremost the president’s home.

“On behalf of the Obama family – Michelle, Malia, Sasha, Bo, and Sunny – I want to wish you a very happy Thanksgiving,” Obama said in his Thanksgiving address to the nation. “Like many of you, we’ll spend the day with family and friends, catching up, eating some good food and watching a little football. Before we lift a fork, we lend a hand by going out into the community to serve some of our neighbors in need. And we give thanks for each other, and for all of God’s blessings.”
