What Happens When the Weatherman's Computer Fails

The weather team down at ABCNews4 just made the most of a horrific, live computer crash. Apparently, the computer that generates the graphics for the TV weather forecasts failed recently, but instead of just standing up there and talking in front of a blank screen, the team created some super half-assed chicken scratch pen drawings on printer paper.

Dashlane’s new Password Changer makes security a snap

Screen Shot 2014-12-09 at 11.59.51 AMPassword management can be tough. Every site you visit wants you to forge a relationship via log-in, and it’s tiresome. Social log-ins are convenient, but don’t offer a whole lot of security. You could create a new log-in each time, but that gets tough to manage. On top of all that, random hacks and security breaches can toss your sense … Continue reading

Your Favorite Anonymous App Is Not Anonymous At All

Your Favorite Anonymous App Is Not Anonymous At All

Security researchers recently discovered a serious flaw in Yik Yak, the “anonymous” messaging app popular with teens. In surprisingly simple fashion, the flaw offered hackers a way to discover the identities of Yik Yak’s supposedly unnamed users. It also provides a good opportunity to issue this very important PSA: Anonymous apps aren’t anonymous at all, and they probably never will be.

Take-Two President Criticizes GTA 5 Ban By Australian Retailers

You might have heard over the last couple of weeks that two Australian retailers have banned Grand Theft Auto 5 from sale in any of their outlets across the country because the title contains controversial content. This doesn’t sit well with Take-Two Interactive, the parent publisher of Grand Theft Auto. Take-Two president Karl Slatoff spoke out against this decision today, saying that it “flies in the face of everything that free society’s based on.”

Slatoff made these comments during his talk at the BMO Capital Markets Technology and Digital Media Conference. He acknowledged that while people can take issue with the game’s content, which can often been seedy and gritty, it’s not like people are being forced to purchase this game. “It’s one thing for a person to not want to buy a piece of content,” he says, “which is completely understandable.”

The decision of the Australian retailers, Kmart and Target, is not going affect the title’s financial performance. There are many other places from where people can purchase the game, not to mention the online stores on their respective gaming platforms.

Slatoff believes its wrong for a person or a group of people to make that decision for millions of people, that a game’s content is unsuitable. “We have 34 million people who have bought GTA 5,” he says, “if these folks had their way, none of those people would be able to buy Grand Theft Auto.”

So far the retailers haven’t said if they are going to reconsider their decision. Grand Theft Auto titles have almost always have controversial content but that hasn’t stopped the franchise from becoming one of the most lucrative and marketable gaming franchises in the market.

Rise Of The Tomb Raider Will Be Published By Microsoft

microsoft logo

It was announced during the E3 2014 conference that following the reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise in 2013, Lara Croft will be making her way to the Xbox One in 2015. The new title is called Rise of the Tomb Raider and will arrive in the fall of 2015. Microsoft’s head of global product marketing, Aaron Greenberg, has confirmed through Twitter that Microsoft will publish Rise of the Tomb Raider when it is released next year.

Even though Rise of the Tomb Raider will arrive on Xbox One first, it won’t really be an Xbox exclusive per se. This game is actually exclusive Xbox One for a limited time so the possibility of it launching on other platforms, including PlayStation, isn’t off the table at all.

Phil Spencer, the Xbox chief at Microsoft, reiterated this when he was asked about exclusivity in an interview. “Yes, the deal has a duration,” he said, “I didn’t buy it. I don’t own the franchise.”

Greenberg was asked about the publication over Twitter, to which he responded, “Yes we are publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider.”

So far a release date for this title hasn’t been confirmed, this information will probably be made public a few months before the release is due. Given that the title is destined for fall 2015, there’s quite a bit of waiting involved before we can see what the game holds in store for us.

Destiny Player Progress Will Be Carried Over To Sequel

destiny lvl30

Bungie’s Destiny, on which Activision spent some half a billion dollars, was one of the most awaited games of 2015. It did well after it was released, topping the charts and bringing in a lot of money. Whispers about the sequel have already begun even though the first DLC for Destiny was only rolled out today. Turns out, Bungie wants gamers to feel invested in this franchise, and what better way is there of doing that than by allowing them to bring over their player progress to the sequel.

In Destiny players have Guardians. To customize and equip Guardians with the best gear and weapons gamers go through a grinding system just to get the best possible equipment so that their level cap can be raised.

In an interview with IGN, Bungie’s David Dague talked about the developer’s plan for expanding this franchise. He said that the idea is “the Guardian you have created is something you can bring along with you on that adventure,” its about letting gamers keep their relationship with the same character for a long time.

The developer later reached out to the scribe and reiterated that progress will carry over to the sequel 100%, there’s absolutely no doubt about it, so if you’ve spent a lot of time tricking out your Guardian rest assured, you won’t have to start from scratch when the sequel finally lands.
