Food and emotional eating can fill a lot of gaps, holes, and crevices in our psyche. At least temporarily. Sometimes you can slather the extra helpings on so well and so consistently that you hardly have to think about the painful spots they cover up (or push down). Until you decide to make some changes. When you do, those uncomfortable places pop right back up.
One of the biggest reasons for emotional eating is perfectionism.
And you know what’s at the heart of perfectionism? The fear or belief of not being good enough.
The fear of not being good enough is a big shame magnet and most of us carry at least some version of this fear — even when, on the outside, we appear smart, successful, and on top of things. In fact, high-achievers can be particularly vulnerable to perfectionism and related emotional overeating.
Here are some ways that the fear of not being enough shows up:
“I haven’t done enough…”
“I don’t deserve to…”
“I’m not smart enough to…”
“I’m not thin enough to…”
“I’m not confident/successful/pretty/talented/graceful/you-fill-in-your-own-blank enough to…”
While sometimes the fear of not being enough is realistic (I’m definitely not skilled enough to figure skate in the Olympics), usually the fear of not being good enough is a story that keeps us living lives that are smaller than they need to be. And this story is a very common recipe for emotional eating.
When we are afraid we aren’t good enough emotional eating comes into play as a way to:
- Push down feelings
- Distract yourself from your feelings
- Comfort yourself
- Procrastinate or avoid tasks you’re afraid of not doing well enough
- Calm the anxiety or fear of not being enough.
The fear of not being enough is a story that doesn’t serve you. You were born enough.
How do you stop emotional eating and worries about not being enough?
- Let go of the belief that you have to DO something to be enough. If you’re trying to fill holes in your sense of self with accomplishments or food, it won’t work. No thing, nothing that you do, will ever convince you that you are enough.
- Rewrite the story you tell yourself. We don’t earn “enoughness.” We’re born with it. Smarts, goodness, thinness, beauty and talent don’t make anyone deserving. I bet you know this when you think about how others deserve to be treated. Give yourself the grace of applying this same simple truth to yourself.
- If perfectionism (the belief that you have to be perfect to be “enough”) or a fear of not being enough trigger overeating, serve up some compassion. Practice learning to be gentle with yourself and remind yourself that enoughness isn’t earned. You are enough because you ARE. Take things one step at a time and expect to remind yourself with every one of those steps and remind yourself that each of those steps counts. You don’t have to be perfect to quit perfectionism. Remember that, and you’re making progress.

Indianpolis Colts third-year quarterback Andrew Luck is considered by many to be the next superstar quarterback in the NFL. Taking over for Peyton Manning in Indy, Luck has made the playoffs in both of his two seasons and has put up some productive passing statistics while doing so, throwing 23 touchdowns in his rookie and sophomore campaigns to go along with 4,374 and 3,822 yards respectively. However, no one in the media likes to point out the fact that he’s had a lot of difficulty when it comes to turning the ball over.
Luck will likely surpass career-highs in completion percentage, passing yards, quarterback rating, and already has 36 touchdowns, which is 13 more than his output in either of his first two seasons. His 4,305 passing yards lead all NFL quarterbacks and he’s tied for first in touchdown passes with Peyton Manning.
But, his numbers aren’t all fantastic.
While the numbers above are impressive, it’s important to note that Luck has been picked off 13 times and has fumbled a shocking 11 times this season, thus putting him among the league leaders in giveaways.
Part of being an elite quarterback is being able to make smart decisions with the ball, not forcing it into tight windows, and being able to hang on to it while being tackled. Luck simply has not drastically improved in those areas.
In his team’s nine wins this season, Luck has been sensational, throwing for 3,060 yards, 26 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions with a 103.7 rating. However, in Indy’s four losses, he has been human, throwing 10 touchdowns to six interceptions for an 88.0 rating.
Among the NFL’s top seven quarterbacks in terms of passing statistics (along with Manning, Rodgers, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, and Philip Rivers), Luck has the lowest completion percentage (61.9) and quarterback rating (98.8) of the bunch. This comes in part due to his passing volume, but nonetheless, it’s important to point out.
Luck is coming off of a 24-for-53 performance in a 25-24 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. In that game, he passed for just 294 yards (which isn’t great considering he threw the ball so many times), 2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, and a fumble for a rating of just 59.8… his worst game of the season so far. For much of the first half, he and the Colts offense looked confused and panicked. But, I guess everyone is entitled to a bad game here and there.
In my opinion, Luck is supremely talented and has all of the ability to be an elite quarterback, but I wouldn’t quite classify him above the aforementioned quarterbacks who have arguably performed better than Luck this season when keeping turnovers in mind with the same weight as touchdowns and passing yards.

Since Minecraft launched, we have seen some very awesome maps made in the game by geeks with a lot of time on their hands. Four new maps have been made in the game that celebrate some of the coolest games on the PlayStation consoles.
The maps are very detailed, and blocky, replicas of levels from Ratchet & Clank, Infamous, Uncharted, and God of War. All of these maps were made by teams of builders for a recent contest and they are each so cool.
Each of the maps was completed in three weeks with teams made up of 20 people. Ten of those folks were professional builders and the other ten were volunteers. Professional Minecraft building is a thing? Check out the videos to see the maps for yourself.
