Native MKV Support Arrives On Windows 8.1

microsoft surface pro 3 33 640x441

Earlier this year Microsoft added native support for the MKV file format to its latest gaming console, the Xbox One. This was the first time that the possibility of this support being brought over to Windows was raised, and that’s exactly what has happened now. The Matroska Multimedia Container file format, commonly known as MKV, is now natively supported by Windows 8.1.

The VLC media player is widely used for playing the MKV file format, notwithstanding the fact that it happens to be one of the most popular media players because it has support for virtually all media formats.

It really is no secret that MKV is the to-go format for providing pirated copies of TV shows and movies through file sharing sites or BitTorrent. Those who download such content online would previously rely upon third party players, like VLC, but having native support on Windows 8.1 will eliminate the need to do that.

This support won’t be limited to Windows 8.1. Microsoft is already committed to supporting MKV in Windows 10 which is expected to be released around summer next year. Native MKV on Windows 8.1 is held back by the codec and subtitle support of this operating system, but this might be improved with Windows 10. Support for FLAC or Free Lossless Audio Codec has also been committed.

Amazon’s Latest Feature Lets You Haggle Prices With Sellers

amazon kindle fire hdx 8.9 review 5 640x424

One of the world’s leading online retailer is now allowing customers to haggle prices online with sellers. Amazon has added a new “make-an-offer” option on its website which can be used to bid for lower prices on over 150,000 items, which includes but is not limited to items like fine art and rare coins, all of which are sold by third party sellers.

The feature isn’t similar to eBay, it’s not going to be an auction. Instead customers can provide their own valuation for a product which the seller can either choose to accept or decline, or come back with a counter offer. All of these discussions are private between the seller and buyer, and the amount that has to be paid will never exceed the item’s list price.

A survey of sellers conducted by Amazon revealed that almost half of the respondents felt giving customers the ability to haggle prices would aid in driving more sales.

Once an offer has been submitted, the sellers will only be given 72 offers to reject or accept it, or make a counter offer. Once the counter offer has been made, the purchase then has 72 hours to make a response.

This option won’t be limited to just 150,000 items. Amazon says that it plans to extend it to “hundreds of thousands” of items in the coming year.

4G Capable LG G Watch R2 Rumored

LG G Watch R 03 640x427

It hasn’t been that long since LG released its second wearable device this year called the G Watch R. The smartwatch touts a round design much like the Moto 360, and it has received a lot of praise for its display. Already rumors have started circulating about the device’s successor. Rumor has it that the LG G Watch R2 is going to have 4G capability.

Standalone cellular connectivity on a smartwatch won’t be nothing new. Samsung has already done that this year. The Gear S smartwatch is 3G capable which eliminates the need to hook it up to a smartphone in order to share a data connection.

Rumors out of South Korea suggest that the company has already started work on developing the LG G Watch R2. Word on the street is that this smartwatch will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona, which takes place in March 2015, making it the first 4G capable smartwatch in the world.

Even though 4G capability on a smartwatch will be a huge leap for the wearable device market there are certain concerns that need to be addressed, like the battery life, which should be good enough to provide juice for data usage on 4G while lasting users throughout the day.

LG hasn’t commented on these rumors so it wouldn’t hurt to take them with a grain of salt for now.

Blackphone To Launch ‘Privacy-Focused’ App Store Soon

blackphone 640x394

Blackphone is a privacy-focused smartphone that came out earlier this year. It is powered by PrivatOS which is a custom fork of Android 4.4.2 KitKat. The Blackphone provides secure calls, messaging, content storage and more but there was one caveat. In order to take advantage of these features users could only use the default apps that came with the device. That changes now. Blackphone has announced that it will soon launch a “privacy-focused” app store.

This app store is meant for Blackphone and is entirely focused on apps that provide privacy. Curated applications selected by the company will be featured in the app store.

That’s not all. Early next year the company is also going to release a major update for PrivatOS which will bring a feature called “Spaces.” This will allow users to create self-contained spaces on their device to separate apps, data and accounts. Essentially this means users will be able to separate work apps and data from personal apps and data.

Blackphone CEO Toby Weir-Jones says that the addition of Spaces and the app store is going to be a “game changer” for this brand. Expect Blackphone’s privacy-focused app store to arrive by January 2015. The PrivatOS update is destined for “early 2015.”

A Letter From a Delayed BART Passenger

Dear Protestors,

This past weekend, you have totally inconvenienced me. Dreams of Beyoncé and dancing with friends filled my head on Friday, but you shut down transbay BART service. On Saturday, protests resulted in teargas, which totally dampened the mood of my holiday party. Last night, I went to sleep with helicopter lights shining directly through my window and awoke to reports that my local Whole Foods was looted. Glass is shattered surrounding my home in Berkeley, businesses’ windows have been boarded up throughout the Bay, and folks are relatively uneasy in a community that, for the most part, is extraordinarily privileged.

Thank you.

Is my momentary uneasiness fair at this time? No, probably not. I didn’t do anything to create this broken system. However, my uneasiness will pass. Will an African-American man who is 6’4 and 220 ever not be concerned while in the presence of the police? Frankly, I can’t imagine that reality.

As a millennial, I have the privilege of being familiar with all the protests that have come before, but only in a history class. Because of these protests, I’m able to have the weekend off, get paid time off, use a bus when I break my leg, identify as queer, and live and work while maintaining a relatively great life. If it weren’t for folks that fought so hard to assure these rights, all American lives would be worse off. Though many are judgmental of these current protests, all of us benefit from past revolutionaries.

Yes, the protests may cause inconvenience and the looting does give me pause. However, my inconvenience is trivial to the systemic racism that operates in this country. There are people that have spoken about police militarization and systemized racism much better than I ever could, but I’m only hopeful that these protests will continue until genuine transformation happens.

Protestors, you will be heckled in the media, arrested, and condemned via Facebook’s News Feed. I’m thankful for every one of your late night protests, your disruption of my nights, and your continued fight towards us having deep discussions about race in this country. Thank you for your work, your convictions, and your patriotism.

In solidarity,
James

6 Bedrooms With Fireplaces We Would Love to Wake Up To

Placing a fireplace within the master suite is the classic way to create warmth within our most intimate of spaces. A fireplace can serve as an elegant focal point for the bedroom, lending architectural style and substance. Add an armchair or bench and you’ve instantly created a warm nook for reading. Consider using a gas fireplace in the bedroom so you don’t have a stack of firewood or kindling in your sleeping space.

Finding Peace in the Wake of Tragedy: Eric Garner's Death

I’m not an outwardly political person. I don’t often weigh in on news, celebrity scandal or major jury decisions via Facebook or other social media sites. I tend to skirt the subject of politics when talking to people with whom I’m not extremely close. I worry about how others will perceive me if I voice my concerns over controversial issues.

But, like so many other Americans, I cannot stay quiet right now. I feel compelled to speak out in the face of recent decisions not to indict the police officer who caused Eric Garner’s death.

I can’t begin to imagine the horrors many police officials have witnessed or been part of during their careers as law enforcers. I can only guess that they filter each situation they find themselves in — as we all do — through their past experiences and the experiences of others they know. I guarantee the assumptions they make and the precautions they take when dealing with both threatening and non-threatening citizens is a result of their fear about being taken advantage of, injured or killed.

I don’t pretend to know the atrocities and violence inflicted on police officers or their loved ones as a result of the authority positions that place them in the path of severe criticism and danger.

But that being said, I also don’t buy the theory that we can’t judge the officials who unintentionally killed Garner simply because we haven’t walked in their shoes.

Yes, we can judge them. We can judge them because there is clear documented evidence of these police officers attacking an unarmed man on the sidewalk for no apparent reason. There is clear documented evidence of these police officers placing an innocent man in a prohibited chokehold and ignoring his struggle to breathe, ignoring his pleas for air and mercy.

I felt heartsick along with the rest of the nation after learning that a grand jury chose not to indict the officer who killed Garner. For a couple days, each time the television or my Facebook newsfeed reminded me of this injustice with new details in the case or a fiery opinion piece, I felt overcome with heaviness and sadness.

It’s moments like these that can cause even the most levelheaded and peaceful person to feel angry and disillusioned with the state of the world. That may sound dramatic, but it’s true.

More than the indignation or the confusion, however, I think each of us feels an overwhelming sense of helplessness.

We feel helpless to be heard, helpless to act, helpless to make an impact. Somehow our sympathies — deep as they may extend — feel like insignificant, futile, vain gestures to bring about positive change.

But if there’s anything I know, it’s that change starts with the individual consciousness. Change starts by being aware of yourself and aware of the world around you. In times like these, when feeling lost and broken-hearted over a tragedy in the news becomes our default setting, it’s important to remember what we are capable of accomplishing.

It’s important to remember that we have the choice in every situation in our lives to teach love instead of fear. We have the option to act as lights that brighten this world filled with sudden, blanketing darkness. We have the power to spread joy through our behavior and our attitudes.

Let us use Eric Garner’s death as a reminder to radiate love wherever and to whomever we can. Let us honor his memory by being tools to fill this world with more consideration and less prejudice, more understanding and less confusion, more peace and less violence.

Be kind to everyone you meet. Try not to assume or condemn. Extend compassion. Give without expectation. Listen without agenda.

Most importantly, forgive. Forgive the world and the people in it who cause you grief and unrest. Forgive yourself for passing judgments on these people. Release your hatred and your bitterness, which only serve to tether you to darkness.

Then move forward. Step into devastation and harmony equally with only love in your heart and your mind.

Wherever you go, whatever you do, whatever you say, strive to be the light and the love this world desperately needs.
