This GIF shows how much work goes into making stop motion animation

In this clip from the movie The Boxtrolls (it’s the end credits scene), you see how the stop motion animation of that beautiful film was made. There aren’t any shortcuts, somebody has to move the characters, move out of the way, film it and then move the characters over and over again to get it right.

Mozilla wants to put Firefox on iOS

Mozilla has been staunchly opposed to an iOS version of its Firefox browser for a while. It wants to use its own web engine, but Apple will only let companies use its in-house code in the name of security. However, the organization is clearly having …

Over 2,000 NoPhones Ordered For The Holiday Season

nophoneDo you still remember the NoPhone? This happens to be a device that certainly lives up to its name, being developed to ensure that one will be able to ease into the transition of not living with a smartphone by your side all the time. The NoPhone happens to be a successfully funded Kickstarter project, where this piece of plastic is meant to substitute your smartphone in your pocket. It looks like a handset, and has a similar feeling in terms of size and form factor, but it does not have any kind of display all, and neither does it come with the relevant innards to keep it going.

In other words, this is but a simple piece of plastic that makes you feel as though you are carrying a smartphone in your pocket, but other than that, it is unable to receive calls, send text messages, or even play back music, for it is as useful as a smartphone just like how a rock would be. This ought to ensure that you will be able to enjoy actual conversations with another human being over dinner, as well as spend quality time with your loved ones, or perhaps even enjoy your surroundings without having to go through smartphone withdrawal symptoms.

The NoPhone also works great to trick thieves whenever they would like to relieve you of your smartphone, and it is interesting to note that over 2,000 NoPhones have been sold already to date, where they will arrive by December 25th.

xolo win 1000Xolo, a company that has made headlines in the past with claims to working on the lightest Windows Phone-powered smartphone in the world alongside the likes of highly affordable smartphones and a decent foray into the tablet market, is back again. This is one of the few new Indian Windows Phone OEMs, where they are said to be working on a spanking new Xolo WIN Q1000 handset.

The Xolo WIN Q1000 has already undergone an import of 10,000 units – at least according to the importation site known as Zauba, where it has listed down a more generous 5” display that your eyes would definitely more than welcome, not to mention Dual SIM capability that allows you to separate both your work and private life without having to carry around a couple of handsets.

All in all, the Xolo WIN Q1000 does seem to be an upgrade of sorts over what we have seen in the past, and it is sure as heck refreshing to see a different take on the usual Windows Phone-powered smartphones by small time OEMs. It remains to be seen as to whether the Xolo WIN Q1000 smartphone will make its way outside of India or not, and whether the developed world will embrace such a device.

Microsoft To Shut Down Nokia Trailers App For Windows Phone

nokia headquarters logo sign 001 630x472All good things must come to an end, and Microsoft is said to be working on giving those who enjoy the Nokia Trailers app for Windows Phone devices until this December 31st, where that would be the last day this app would be in operation – before it is shut down for good. This bit of information hailed from folks who reported of an in-app message that was sent to whatever is left of the Nokia Trailers app users earlier this week.

Microsoft has retained a fair number of the Windows Phone apps it acquired when it purchased Nokia’s Devices and Services division in April, but has been on a rebranding spree in the last few months that has passed us by. Unfortunately for the Nokia Trailers app, it will experience its demise at the end of this year. This means that it will barely make it past the 2 year old mark, having first released in June 2012 without receiving any more updates since January of 2013. Now that is certainly a long time, really.

Nokia Trailers basically allowed movie fans to gain quick access to the most recent trailers as well as teasers for upcoming films, where users were also able to download such clips for offline viewing, not to mention share their favorite trailers with their contacts. How many of you are going to miss the Nokia Trailers app?

Car Stereos’ Bluetooth Streaming Issues Attributed To Microsoft Band

Microsoft Band Hero 2 640x463The hot selling Microsoft Band certainly has its fair share of fans, so much so that it remains sold out ahead of the holiday season. Well, just because something is extremely popular does not mean that it does not have its fair share of flaws – that is not the case with the Microsoft Band, since it has been reported that this physical fitness tracking device still has some niggling issues to iron out, where in addition to manufacturing and distribution segments, there are some bugs to squash as well. Case in point, Bluetooth audio streaming in vehicles.

It is said that an issue arises whenever iOS, Windows Phone and presumably Android users stream music in the vehicle as the smartphone remains paired to the Band simultaneously. It might be fine and dandy at the beginning, but after some time, music playback will get all wonky as it begins to stutter, skip, and snap. Those who reported of this issue normally claim that the problem is capable of fixing itself after half a minute, but that is just too long for those who love to listen to their music interruption-free. After all, this should not even happen in the first place!

It is hoped that Microsoft will be able to find a solution to this matter in the near future, otherwise it might just kill off the momentum that the Microsoft Band has among the masses.

New Google Glass Patent Points To Futuristic Design

Google Glass, a piece of wearable technology that has definitely garnered a fair amount of interest over the past year, looks as though it is going to gain an upgrade. Of course, nothing official has been announced just yet as at press time, but it seems that there is a spanking new Google Glass patent in the pipeline which does feature details of a new design that would make the upcoming pair look as though it hails from the future.

The latest patent concerning Google Glass would boast of a design that features a similar sleek metal band which wraps around your brow, sporting a shiny crystal of glass that will be able to project the entire virtual world straight into your cornea. The nose support does seem to have gone missing, however, and one of the major changes in the overall design would be the relocation of the whole display/camera unit that has made its way from the right side of your head all the way to the left.

As for its highly controversial camera, that particular module will still remain right beside the display, being ready to capture just about anything, regardless of where you are. Best of all is, the huge battery that used to be there right behind your ear in the Explorer Edition is no longer seen. When will this new design hit the road? Only time will tell, but we do like what we see – a lot.

PS4 Firmware v2.03 Arriving Later Tonight

sony ps4 revealed novemberAny decent modern day hardware deserves to be on the receiving end of a software or firmware update from time to time – it is the only way that the hardware will be able to remain relevant and keep up with the times, this is for sure. Well, most of the time the kind of firmware that rolls out would ensure that it works just fine, resulting in more fixes than breaking the hardware, but there are some hiccups along the way from time to time. Sony’s PS4 is touted to be on the receiving end of a brand new software update, where we were treated to some pretty vague content description over Twitter.

The tweet read, “ PS4 system software update v2.03 arrives later tonight, and will help improve usage of some applications.” Right, so we will see some applications’ usage improve, but certainly shedding more light on the situation would help instead of leaving the PS4 community to perform their fair share of second guessing. Having said that, we can only speculate that this might mean the improvement of the performance when it comes to social features such as Party, which tends to end in a bad experience when certain games are played.

C64p Laptop Makes Its Way To eBay

c64pThe Commodore 64 computer is definitely a machine that would have brought back fond memories to those who spent plenty of time in their early years with computers. Well, for those of you out there who cannot but help to wish for a laptop version of the Commodore 64, all of that wishful thinking can now be put to bed. Basically, what you see above is the C64p laptop, but do bear in mind that this is not an official piece of hardware, but rather, it is a lovingly assembled DIY project by a particular hardware hacker.

The C64p laptop is actually made up of a netbook that has been taken apart, where it subsequently saw the various components replaced, including the display itself, the processor, and just about any other internal component, transforming it into a portable Commodore 64 in the process that sports a 7” display, a touchpad which also doubles up as a joystick, and an infrared remote control. It is certainly a labor of love, that is for sure, where the developer has currently set a limited number of available units on sale on eBay due to the lengthy refurbishment process. The C64p is able to run a number of games in addition to C64 BASIC, JiffyDOS, and GEOS, although do bear in mind that not all classic Commodore 64 games or apps will function.
