Feds Use 18th Century Law to Force Apple to Unlock Encrypted Phones

The Department of Justice is going to absurd lengths in order to unlock encrypted smartphones. It’s using a law from the 1700s to force Apple and at least one other company to cooperate with law enforcement officials in investigations dealing with locked, encrypted phones. And the courts, so far, are letting it happen.

Barclays Bank To Offers Video Customer Service

barclays videoAny company that does not want to improve, but rather, remain stagnant at where they are, is more often than not doomed to fail. Having said that, Barclays Bank has moved on with the times, where the financial institution looks set to offer a new one-to-one video service to select customers from December 8th onward, which is also touted to be a first of its kind where the UK banking sector is concerned.

With video banking in tow, premier account customers can now speak securely to bank staff regardless of the time of the day, without having to make their way down to the bank, now how about that for customer service? This means one can make use of a compatible smartphone, tablet or notebook. According to Steven Cooper, CEO of personal banking at Barclays, this would mark a “watershed moment” in UK banking, where it would allow banks to “interact with customers completely on their terms, rather than ours”.

Do expect this video customer service to engage mortgage, business and wealth customers from early next year onward, before it is made available to the rest of their retail customers in due time. Would you prefer to deal with someone in person, or over a video conference call?

Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Previewed

galaxy s4 gpe android 5.0 2

We’re tracking the Android 5.0 Lollipop roll out closely and after having made its way to Nexus smartphones and tablets, the update is slowly landing on Google Play Edition devices, not to mention the fact that devices like the Moto X and LG G3 have already started receiving Lollipop in many markets. Though the update hasn’t been released for this particular device, leaked screenshots provide us with a preview of Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition running Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The Google Play Edition program consists of high-end smartphones and tablets from major manufacturers, including but not limited to Sony, Samsung, HTC and LG. Just yesterday we reported that Lollipop has already been released for the LG G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition.

These units offer near vanilla Android experience so they’re a good option for customers looking for a pure Android OS on a smartphone with flagship specifications. The Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition GT-i9505G was initially released with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean last year and was recently updated to Android 4.4 KitKat.

Now though the wait has begun for Android 5.0 Lollipop to land on this device. Samsung is testing it out right now and the screenshots, leaked by Sammobile, show that it doesn’t have any of the visual interface tweaks common with a Samsung device.

It hasn’t been confirmed when this update is going to be released for the public, so far a Lollipop build for this device hasn’t been leaked as well.

Zano Drone Can Film Itself

zanoA drone that actually captures selfies? Now this is definitely something different, don’t you think so? Known as the Zano, this is a micro drone that happens to be a flying prototype with a due date of it being marketed some time next summer. Right now, the Zano micro drone is being demonstrated on Kickstarter, where Torquing Group, the engineering group behind it, intends to raise £125,000 so that it can enter production.

Just how small is the Zano micro drone? Well, for starters, it measures 2.5” x 2.5” in size, and will tip the scales at an incredibly lightweight 55 grams, sporting a 5MP on-board HD video camera in addition to a digital microphone, while there is also optical image stabilizing technology that is thrown into the mix as well. Video resolution has been capped at 720p due to initial bandwidth restrictions, although the on-board camera is able to capture 1080p video at 60 fps. To put it simply, one can look forward to better quality footage should this ability be unlocked in a future system update.

In the pipeline at the moment includes the building of both iOS and Android apps, as well as getting in touch with regulators so that they can pick up UAC guidelines to make sure that the drone’s capabilities remain well within the confines of the law.
