Puzzlephone Joins The Ranks Of Modular Smartphones

puzzlephone 640x389Could modular smartphones be the way of the future? Well we know that Google is working on Project Ara and there is also the Vsenn modular smartphone that was announced not too long ago, but that’s not all because over in Finland, Circular Devices has a modular smartphone of their own called the Puzzlephone.

The Puzzlephone appears on the surface to be a much more simpler answer to Project Ara as it basically consists of three different areas in which users can swap out. The main portion of the phone will house the display, speakers, and the basic structure. That is called the “Spine”. There is also the “Heart” which houses the battery and secondary electronics, followed by the “Brain” which holds the processor and camera module.

So instead of being able to swap out every component, users will be able to choose between batches of components instead. Granted this means it is less customizable, but we suppose this also makes things a lot simpler for users as it makes the choice of components more basic. So with Project Ara planned for 2015, when can we expect to see the Puzzlephone?

Well its creators are also planning a 2015 release in the second half of the year, but this is assuming that they are able to secure the necessary funding to make it a reality. So far we have to admit that we like what we see, but what do you guys think? Is the Puzzlephone a device you would consider?

NTT DOCOMO Shows Off Its LTE Speeds With A Cooking Demonstration

There are some parts of the world where LTE isn’t as fast as it could or should be. Over in Japan that doesn’t seem to be a problem as local carrier NTT DOCOMO has recently expanded its LTE service onto its 1700MHz spectrum. That being said to demonstrate just how fast their LTE service is, the carrier has cooked up a rather fun and bizarre commercial that involves the frying of shrimp.

Basically the ad shows some shrimp being placed into an air cannon. After which the shrimp is fired from the air cannon into an egg mixture, battery, fire, before landing onto a plate fully cooked. Yes, it cooks that fast, or at least that’s what we think NTT DOCOMO is trying to tell us with their LTE speeds.

Of course we can’t be 100% sure that this is how the shrimps were genuinely cooked, but either way it is pretty entertaining and hilarious, so if you enjoy your cooking shows and demonstration of technology, then you’ll want to take a minute or two to check it out. We don’t suggest you attempt this at home as impressed as you think your friends and family will be. So what do yu guys think? Is your LTE just as fast, if not faster?

After Ferguson, It's Possible No Indictment Also in NYPD Chokehold Case of Eric Garner

It is possible.

While unimaginable for some, it’s conceivable that New Yorkers should brace themselves for no indictment in the Eric Garner Case to go along with no indictment in Ferguson.

In the New York Daily News, under the headline of “Staten Island grand jury must issue indictment in Eric Garner case to avoid riots seen in Ferguson,” this is what columnist Denis Hamill said:

The people of Ferguson, Mo. needed an indictment against Police Officer Darren Wilson, and didn’t get one. In Staten Island, a grand jury is deciding on whether to indict an NYPD cop for the chokehold that killed Eric Garner. For the sakes of the city, an indictment is needed or else the riots erupting in Ferguson will occur here, too.

As the protests have illustrated throughout the country in the last few days, this entire issue of alleged Police Brutality is still a raw nerve.

A colleague of mine just recently said regarding the Eric Garner case, “the video does not lie.”

When it comes to Grand Juries, and more importantly the case the prosecutor puts before the grand jury, the “video does not lie,” argument could amount to wishful thinking.

Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo, 29, is seen in a viral video placing Eric Garner in what appears to clearly be a chokehold.

But the case could all come down to this: Do you really see what you think you are seeing?

For example, the officer reportedly told the special grand jury that he didn’t intend on seriously harming Mr. Garner, and more importantly, that it was not a chokehold.

The city’s medical examiner ruled the death a homicide by a chokehold, but, and this could sway a grand jury, with various contributing health factors, like acute and chronic bronchial asthma, obesity and hypertensive cardiovascular disease.

I will concede this much. The mere mentioning of do you really see, what you think you are seeing in the video might prove to be insulting to 9 out of 10 people. The obvious counter attack is that its spin, double-talk, but it could prove to be just enough for the Grand Jury to clear Officer Panteleo.

Another major factor: Jason Leventhal, a former assistant district attorney in Staten Island who now brings civil rights cases against the department told me one night on TV that jury pools in Staten Island often include many people with relatives in law enforcement. Leventhal went on to tell me, and you can see the interview here: “Staten Island is a very pro-police community that is going to give the benefit of the doubt to police officers,” he said.

I want you to judge and watch the involved parties for yourself, but please keep in mind that police officers are given broad latitude on force based on their professional judgment.

This is what the President of the PBA Pat Lynch told me on TV:

Point one, “it was not a chokehold.”
Point two: “while tragic, none of this would have happened if Mr. Garner, a 350-pound man did not refuse to be arrested.” PBA President Pat Lynch

Her is part one of the Pat Lynch Interview.

Now you can watch part one of the interview with the emotional mother and other family members of Eric Garner. This interview is with the new family attorney, Johnathon Moore.

It bears repeating, on the Garner video, do you really see, what you think you are seeing?

Both Mayor Bill de Blasio and the police commissioner, William J. Bratton, said it appeared to show a chokehold, but keep in mind, and this too can play a major deciding role with the Grand Jury, for more than 20 years, while the Police Department has banned chokeholds, though they are not prohibited by state law.

I recently wrote a blog post for the Huffington Post agreeing with former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Black-on-black crime, and I have to wonder if there is a connection to this issue when there are such encounters between the community and Police.

For my liberal/progressive friends that wonder how could I say such a thing, I recommend you sit down, and really look at this Milwaukee police chief for three minutes, exactly a year ago following the fatal shooting of a five-year-old child.

The Staten Island Grand Jury can return an indictment. The public may expect the Staten Island Grand Jury to return an indictment.

However the reality may prove to be quite different. It may come down to no indictment in Ferguson and no indictment in the chokehold NYPD case of Eric Garner.

Court Tosses Ruling That Shielded Jodi Arias Witness

PHOENIX (AP) — An appeals court has thrown out a ruling that barred the public from watching the first witness called by Jodi Arias at the convicted murderer’s sentencing retrial.

The decision Wednesday by the Arizona Court of Appeals overturns the Oct. 30 ruling by Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens and suggests that the previously unidentified witness may have been Arias herself.

Stephens had said the ruling was necessary because Arias’ first witness, whom the judge refused to publicly identify, wouldn’t testify unless the hearing was closed to the public. Some of the testimony by Arias’ first witness was conducted in private. The Arizona Republic and three Phoenix TV stations — KPNX, KPHO and KTVK — protested the closure of the courtroom, arguing the First Amendment allows reporters to attend the trial.

Arias was convicted of murder last year in the 2008 death of former boyfriend Travis Alexander, but jurors deadlocked on whether she should be sentenced to life in prison or death. A new jury has been picked to decide her sentence.

The appeals court didn’t offer an explanation in its ruling Wednesday at how it arrived at that decision. A more detailed ruling is expected in the future.

But the court suggested an answer to a question that stumped trial watchers: Who was the skittish witness who was allowed to testify in private?

The appeals court said Stephens order closed the courtroom to the public during “any testimony by Jodi Arias,” though it’s unclear whether the testimony was made by Arias herself or someone else on Arias’ behalf.

“It underscores the importance of the public’s right to attend criminal trials, particularly the testimony of a defendant in the sentencing phase of a capital trial,” David Bodney, an attorney representing the news organizations, said of the ruling.

A call to Arias attorney Jennifer Willmott wasn’t immediately returned Wednesday afternoon.

The decision to close the courtroom came after Stephens and the case’s lawyers met behind closed doors at the start of Arias’ case. Since then, Arias’ lawyers have continued putting on their case, and Arias has yet to publicly testify at the sentencing retrial.

The Arias case has been marked by secrecy ever since the conclusion of the first trial, which turned in to a media circus as salacious and violent details about Arias and Alexander were broadcast live for people around the world.

Since then, the judge has held one secret hearing after another and barred the broadcast of footage from the sentencing retrial until after a verdict is reached. Arias’ lawyers had argued that daily broadcasts of the trial would lead to defense witnesses backing out for fear of being harassed or threatened.
