Xiaomi Gets Into The Air Purifier Business With The Mi Air Purifier Lab

Xiaomi isn’t exactly a brand known to many people outside of China or Asia for that matter, but it doesn’t matter because even without a strong US or European presence, the company has gone on to do very well for themselves by becoming the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer.

That being said, over in China, Xiaomi has recently taken the wraps off an air purifier of their own making called the Mi Air Purifier Lab. This is to help combat the polluted air in China, which for those who haven’t seen the photos can be pretty bad, so we can’t imagine what it will be like to live through it on a daily basis.

Xiaomi’s selling point here would be price. The Mi Air Purifier Lab is priced at 899 Yuan which is a fraction of the price of a similar model by a competitor which can be bought for as much as 6,000 Yuan. According to the company, they boast that their air purifier is able to remove as much as 99.9% of PM2.5 particles in a room of about 406 cubic meters within an hour.

It does not seem likely that Xiaomi will be bringing the Mi Air Purifier Lab stateside or to other markets, but we have to wonder how the company will do in their attempts at selling white goods. What do you guys think? Will Xiaomi be able to conquer the home electronics market as well?

Several Amiibo Figurines Have Already Been Discontinued By Nintendo

amiiboAre you still on the fence regarding Nintendo’s Amiibo figurines? Are you wondering if they might be a good investment? Well here’s some bad news – it looks like if you were late to the Amiibo party, you could be missing out on several figurines. According to recent reports, it seems that Nintendo has actually discontinued several of their Amiibo characters.

According to a tweet by retailer Video Games Plus, “Nintendo has officially discontinued Marth, Wii Fit Trainer & Villager amibos. Sorry folks these are gone forever.” It does seem a bit odd that Nintendo would discontinue some of the figurines this early in their life and while the company has yet to confirm the discontinuation of the characters mentioned above, they did hint at it.

In a statement released to Kotaku, Nintendo said, “We will aim for certain amiibo to always be available. These will be for our most popular characters like Mario and Link. Due to shelf space constraints, other figures likely will not return to the market once they have sold through their initial shipment.”

So like we said if you are late to the party, chances are you won’t be able to find some characters anymore. Of course you could try your luck on eBay although given their out of production status, they will most likely end up costing you more. In the meantime analysts have predicted that the Amiibo lineup will rake in a ton of money for Nintendo and have predicted revenue as much as $1 billion from the US market alone.

Apple Looking To Hire Retail Employees With A Fashion/Luxury Background [Rumor]

apple store theftIf you wanted to buy an Apple product like a MacBook, iMac, iPhone, or iPad, an Apple Genius will be able to help you with that and answer any technical questions you might have about the product, but will those same Geniuses be the right people to handle the upcoming Apple Watch that appears to be designed as a luxury timepiece?

Well maybe, maybe not, but according to a report from 9to5Mac, they have learnt from internal hiring documents that Apple could be looking to employ retail candidates with a fashion or luxury background, suggesting that these employees could play a role in helping to sell the Apple Watch to potential customers.

Apple’s interest in fashion and luxury products is not new. In fact in the past we have seen Apple hire executives from various fashion and luxury backgrounds, such as Angela Ahrendts who used to be the CEO of Burberry and Paul Deneve, the former CEO of Yves St. Laurent. Of course it remains to be seen how exactly this will play out, so we guess we’ll just have to wait until next year to find out.

In the meantime the Apple Watch’s release has yet to be determined. We have heard the possibility that it could be launched after Chinese New Year while other reports have suggested a 14th of February release.

Street Fighter V’s PS4 Exclusivity Confirmed, Will Feature Cross-Platform Play With PC

A few days ago a leaked trailer of Capcom’s upcoming Street Fighter V made its way onto the internet. Based on the trailer, it looked like the game was going to be an exclusive to the Sony PlayStation 4 console and the PC, with no mention of other consoles like the Xbox One. Well if you were hoping that this was a timed exclusive, you’re out of luck.

Capcom has officially taken the wraps off the game over the weekend and it was revealed that the PlayStation 4 will be the only console the game will appear on, as confirmed by Sony’s Adam Boyes. The game’s producer Yoshinori Ono also confirmed this and was quoted as saying, “It was clear, to match the passion of Street Fighter fans around the world, we need the combined strength of both Capcom and PlayStation.”

That being said there is good news for gamers. Now typically games released on the PC and console tend to be separate from one another. However the good news is that with Street Fighter V, the game will feature cross-platform play meaning that gamers on the PC will be able to challenge gamers who play on the console, and vice versa.

Unfortunately apart from that tidbit, not much else is known about the upcoming game, like when will it be released, but hopefully we will learn more in the future. In the meantime you can check out the announcement trailer and gameplay trailer in the videos above.

Astoria Characters: The Tree Santa

Up against the snow-white fence, there’s a pile of Christmas trees, trussed up like Thanksgiving turkeys.

Harry started NYCtrees.com last season.

In the opposite corner of the mini-backyard, there’s a box full of table-top trees, their tender emerald needles reaching toward the holiday sky.

They are hemmed in by stacks and stacks of evergreens everywhere, everywhere, everywhere.

NYCtrees.com is based on 21st Street.

Standing in the center of this forest of Fraser firs is Harry DeLucia, iPhone glued to his ear.

It’s only the second week of December and already he’s coordinating 50 deliveries per day with what he hopes is holiday cheer.

The same thing happened last season, which is when he and his brother Louis, who lives in New Jersey, established NYCtrees.com, an online service that sells, delivers and sets up Christmas trees for $79 to $300.

Trees waiting for new homes.

“All you have to do is sit on your couch and click,” Harry says, adding that the company also has five traditional stands, including one outside Mount Sinai Hospital Queens at 30th Avenue and 27th Street. “We do everything else, even sweep up the needles before we leave your house.”

NYCtrees.com, which is run out of the brothers’ boyhood home, was an outgrowth of a series of farm stands they established in Manhattan and Queens in the last couple of years.

Rough cuts.

“The Christmas trees that are sold on the street come from North Carolina and Canada,” Harry says. “They were cut down months ago and don’t last long. Ours are sourced from small New Jersey farms, and they are fresh.”

Although Harry was born in the house that houses the business, he didn’t spend much time in Astoria until after he graduated from college and became a teacher five years ago.

Harry does a lot of the heavy lifting.

His parents moved the family to Troy, New York, when he, the youngest of five children, was only 8 months old.

“They had been IV drug users, and they had HIV,” he says. “They knew they were ill; the move was an attempt to get their lives together.”

Although his parents had stopped abusing drugs by the time Harry was born, financially, the family was in bad shape.

“We didn’t have enough money for food,” Harry says. “I remember them watering down the milk.”

There were, of course, good times, and it’s these Harry prefers to talk about, probably because his parents died, within three months of each other, when he was 9.

He remembers how kind his mother was, once stopping the car to pick up an elderly woman who was walking on a windy day.

Trimmed, with care, for the stands.

Harry and Louis were taken in by a childless aunt and uncle who lived in Monroe Township, New Jersey. Another uncle owned a nearby farm, where the brothers worked the vegetable stand.

Harry got a little lost in his teenage years, and by his senior year in high school, he was living in his own apartment, delivering Chinese food and pizza to pay the rent.

He enrolled in community college, where he was getting As only in partying.

He was about to drop out when he decided to use most of the $10,000 in life insurance money he inherited from his parents to take a trip around the world.

Six months later, after playing tourist in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, he returned determined to become a success.

He worked his way through Sage College of Albany by taking a job as a live-in caretaker for five mentally challenged adults.

“They were like my family,” he says. “It is because of them that I learned to cook. I had to prepare their meals, and every night we ate dinner together.”

He also spent a couple of months in South Africa teaching HIV education before landing a job with New York City public schools.

“Louis set up the first farm stand, outside our Astoria house, the year after I graduated,” he says. “He wanted to earn some extra money; I thought he was crazy.”

Harry finds the venture to be so much fun that he doesn’t mind doing the extra hours on top of his full-time job at Columbia Secondary School, where he is a phys ed and health teacher and rugby coach.

“Many times after school I jump on the train and help Louis load boxcars and harvest crops,” he says.

High-tech Christmas huddle.

Someday soon, Harry, who is 29, and Louis, who is 32, are going to open two farm-to-table stores — one in Astoria and one on the Upper East Side.

“This doesn’t mean that I will give up teaching,” Harry says, adding that he’s working on a master’s degree at Lehman College. “I love the kids — they always are so happy to see me that they high-five me. I love the challenge of getting them to exercise without their realizing they are exercising.”

For Harry, a no-sleep season.

The one and only thing Harry wants for Christmas is sleep. This month, he doesn’t get to close his big, grey-blue eyes more than three or four hours a night.

As for the holiday, well, he doesn’t have any plans. Last year, he was so busy that he didn’t even put up a Christmas tree. This year, his girlfriend got him one. It’s 3 feet tall.

Jon Stewart Wants To Know Why We're Paying Social Security Benefits To Nazis

With partisan bickering in Washington seemingly at an all-time high, lawmakers managed to find one issue they could finally agree on: denying Social Security benefits to Nazis.

“Bravo, Congress, on your courageous anti-Social Security for Nazis stand,” Jon Stewart said on “The Daily Show” on Monday night. “I can’t believe you just wasted the nation’s time making yourselves look good by passing a bill to stop something that could never happen in a million years anyway.”

But as Stewart found out, it is happening. A loophole allows former Nazis to collect millions of dollars in Social Security benefits in exchange for agreeing to leave the United States.

“Really? We have no other way of making Nazis go away but to bribe them?” Stewart asked. “See here you Nazi monster! I’ll hunt you down to the ends of the Earth so that I can deliver to you these monthly Social Security checks.”

That may not happen much longer.

Passed last week, the No Social Security for Nazis Act is now awaiting the president’s signature.

Get Stewart’s take on the situation in the clip above.
