1st Vows' 'Desperation' Is A Soulful First Step Into Subtlety

Ryan Hunter has long been a player in the Long Island rock scene, formerly fronting Envy on the Coast and offshoot NK. But Hunter’s newest project, 1st Vows, sees him turning the dials down from 10 for creations with subtlety and dynamics in mind. The Huffington Post is pleased to premiere the debut track, “Desperation.”

“I felt like I was using all these tools and all these sounds because I knew them and I grew up with them and that was what I did, but it wasn’t me,” Hunter explained of his previous creations. “They weren’t speaking to any of the emotions that I wanted to portray, or they just didn’t feel right.”

In place of distorted guitars and relentless drums are careful bursts of deep, crackling synth and an entrancing hi-hat metronome. The technique of Hunter’s that has been carried over into “Desperation” is his penchant for aptly timed harmonies, finally positioned on a platform that is designed to keep them the focus. “They want me to pray ’til hands fall off / What if I don’t really care at all? / Maybe I do, but it feels so wrong / That’s that desperation,” Hunter croons in the chorus, although, as he points out, “it’s not as literal as you think,” opting to hold off further explanation until listener’s have had their chance to form their own interpretation.

“I consider this project to be everything that I have been working toward for the past three or four years,” Hunter said. “Even my other projects included. Everybody who has been involved with anything I have done over these years knows that I have been constantly writing, recording and producing material and then throwing it away or putting it on a hard drive for no one to ever hear.

“If you think of it as for every 20 songs you do, you keep one, this is that material,” Hunter added. “With that comes the whole notion of, ‘Okay, cool, I think these go together, I think I’m on to something.’ I think I’ve fought off all of my agendas and just made something that is purely me. It doesn’t mean that I know what it is, I just know that it feels right.”

All of the music finally finished, Hunter is still configuring the rollout, although the current plan is to put out a body of songs in January, followed by another in February.

Man Video Recorded Sex With Slain Stepdaughter's Corpse: Prosecutor

Pennsylvania prosecutors have identified chilling evidence in the case of a man accused of killing his stepdaughter for sex.

Police said Gregory R. Graf, 53, admitted to shooting his 33-year-old stepdaughter, Jessica Padgett, and burying her behind a shed on the Northampton County property where he lives with the victim’s mother. But prosecutors say they now have evidence of a shocking crime that confirms a motive in the brutal killing.

Investigators said Graf told them that he killed Padgett because he wanted to have sex with her, and that he’d sexually violated the woman’s body after she died.

State police searched Graf’s computer and found a video in which the suspect abuses his dead stepdaughter’s body, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli told the Allentown Morning Call.

Morganelli filed a misdemeanor abuse of corpse charge against Graf on Dec. 5.

The Allentown Morning Call reports that the new evidence means it is not likely Graf will face the death penalty, since it suggests he did not rape her while she was still alive:

Under Pennsylvania law, a murder in perpetration of a felony is an aggravating factor that allows prosecutors to pursue capital charges. Rape rises to that level, but the sexual desecration of a corpse does not, as case law has established, Morganelli said.

Padgett went missing Nov. 21 after she left work at a day care center. Police say Padgett’s mother was away in Florida at the time of the murder. Graf was arrested after her body was found five days later.

In a statement released last month, the dead woman’s family said “[Padgett] was a beautiful, vibrant young woman who was beloved by her family and friends.”

Key Interview Missing From Ferguson Documents

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A police interview with a key witness was not provided along with the thousands of documents released after a grand jury decided to not indict a Ferguson police officer in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

An Associated Press review of the records released by St. Louis County prosecutors confirms a report by KSDK-TV that a transcript of an interview with Dorian Johnson, who was with Brown when he was shot, wasn’t included. The two-hour interview was conducted by the FBI and a county police detective.

A spokesman for Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch said he couldn’t explain the discrepancy.

McCullough took the unusual step of releasing information shown to the grand jury once it decided that Ferguson officer Darren Wilson shouldn’t be charged for shooting Brown, who was unarmed.

John Legend, Chrissy Teigen Quietly Hire Food Trucks To Feed Protesters In New York City

Braving near-freezing temperatures, the crowds of demonstrators and activists who thronged the streets of New York City on Sunday to protest the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown may have been cold, but thanks to singer John Legend and his wife, model and food blogger Chrissy Teigen, they did not go hungry.

According to reports, Legend and Teigen offered their support to the protesters by generously hiring several food trucks to provide demonstrators with a free hot meal.

NewsOne reports that the food trucks hired included the popular Kimchi Taco Truck and Milk Truck NYC, which is said to have given out “over 500 helpings of Mac & Cheese.” Activist group Operation Help or Hush reportedly helped with the distribution effort.

On Sunday, Teigen confirmed to BuzzFeed that she and her husband paid for the food trucks.

Legend has been vocal about his thoughts on the events in Ferguson, Missouri, where Michael Brown, an unarmed black man, was killed by a police officer in August.

The Grammy-winning musician also co-wrote a song recently for the the upcoming movie “Selma” — a film about the campaign for black voting rights in 1965 — that references Ferguson.

The song, entitled “Glory,” contains the lyrics: “That’s why Rosa sat on the bus, that’s why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up. When it go down, we woman and man up. They say, ‘Stay down,’ and we stand up.” (Listen to “Glory,” co-written by Common, below.)

Jose E. Reyes Gouged Out Girl's Eye Before Killing Her: Prosecutors

HOUSTON (AP) — Prosecutors say a Houston-area teenager accused of killing a girl in a satanic ritual had gouged out her eye as she begged for her life.

Opening statements in the capital murder trial of 18-year-old Jose E. Reyes began Monday. He’s accused in the February death of 15-year-old Corriann Cervantes in a vacant apartment southeast of Houston. A 16-year-old boy also is charged. He’s expected to stand trial later.

Reyes faces a life sentence if convicted but would be eligible for parole after 40 years.

Prosecutors say the teens were hoping to make a deal with the devil when they disfigured the girl’s body, including carving an upside down crucifix on her stomach.

Defense attorney Jerald Graber told the Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/160m4lr ) the defense team would “zealously represent” Reyes.
