Office Sway Gets Updated With Embeds

swayThere is a new presentation tool from the folks over at Microsoft which is known as Office Sway, and this is actually a modern version of what we are used to calling as PowerPoint. The thing is, Office Sway is slightly different, as it has been designed for story telling instead. Available in the form of a web preview since October last year as well as in the form of an iPhone app, Office Sway sashayed its way into additional countries not too long ago, so that more folks will be able to give it a go and see what it is all about. While the first preview was rather basic in nature, it seems that Microsoft has already updated it with additional features.

Some of the improvements and additions made by Microsoft engineers do include the likes of Bing Images and Suggested Search integration, making Sway your one stop station for just about everything required when it comes to making a memorable presentation. Apart from that, the company has also announced at least a couple of new features that would make Sway all the more convenient and easy-to-use.

One of them would be the ability to embed media from sources apart from Bing, which means content from the likes of Vimeo, Vine, Youtube, Flickr, and SoundCloud are now fair game. Excel charts, PowerPoint slides and PDF content are also able to be displayed. [Press Release]

Facebook Sees Surge In Quarterly Profit

facebook logoSocial network giant Facebook has seen a surge in their quarterly profit – we are looking at a figure of 34% alongside a revenue increase of up to 48%, now how about that? Still, the executives over at Facebook have remained rather modest about their achievements, citing Wednesday’s earnings announcement that they are but getting warmed up – just. In three months that ended on December 31, 2014, Facebook recorded a profit of $701 million, while revenue touched the $3.85 billion mark. Annual net profit saw an increase of 96% to $2.94 billion.

Facebook is focused on connecting the whole world in the coming decade, and they have also managed to perform quite well where mobile advertising is concerned. There was approximately $2.47 billion in sales brought in in the previous quarter for mobile ads alone, which made up 69% of total ad revenue, which is an increase of 53% from the previous year. Well, we do know that they are still trying to balance out the number of video ads displayed, so overall it looks like the Facebook ship is on the right track. What do you think?

It would also be rather interesting times ahead as Facebook continues in their quest to bring Internet connectivity to just about everyone out there – even in the most remote areas of the world.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer In Neon

I am quite sure that a fair number of us have already watched the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer for more than a few times, making it one of the most highly anticipated films in due time. After all, how many of us have already healed from licking the wounds caused by the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace? It might have been in 1999, but wounds do take time to heal, especially if they were inflicted by Jar Jar Binks. Still, we have high hopes that J.J. Abrams at the helm would change things, and here is a recreated Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer in full neon.

Yes sir, you read that right. An entire movie trailer done up in neon? That’s totally cool Talk about paying homage to the 1980s, where neon was the in thing. Of course, this new format might take some getting used to, but once you have warmed up to it, it sure as heck delivers quite a punch. It does make me wonder whether there will be other versions arriving in due time like the GTA-inspired one, getting inspired by this trailer – perhaps an ASCII art trailer, like the one we saw many years back where Neo avoided the bullets fired by the agent in The Matrix?

WesterosCraft Is A Place Of Beauty

Crossovers are more often than not a double edged sword – it can cut both ways, for good and for bad, depending on how it is executed. We have seen crossovers in the comics world for many decades now, and sometimes, the entire shebang just works, while in others, it turned out to be a terrible decision where not even the best storyteller is able to salvage the situation. Having said that, those who happen to love everything about the Game of Thrones series as well as Minecraft might want to do their level best to check out what WesterosCraft is all about, as seen in the video above.

WesterosCraft happens to be an ongoing project that intends to recreate every single bit of the fictional continent of Westeros, except that it will be done on the Minecraft platform, of course. This particular video above was narrated by actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who happens to play the character of Bran in the HBO series. It will depict various locations like Castle Black, Dragonstone, The Wall, Gulltown, Lannisport, Pebbleton and Casterly Rock.

What do you think of the immense project that is ahead, as well as the kind of work that has already been done? It is nothing but exemplary if you ask me, although there is certainly room for additional improvement in the long run.

Is It Possible To Beat Tetris? Apparently So!

tetris-beatWhen it comes to a game like Tetris, there does not seem to be any way to beat it – regardless of how fast your reflexes are coupled with impeccable hand-eye co-ordination for human standards, or so we think. Master Tetris player Kevin Birrell was the one who managed to achieve the seemingly impossible “MasterM” ranking in Tetris the Grand Master 3: Terror Instinct, where he even had to contend with Tetris pieces that turned invisible when the game’s credits started to roll. Birrell did not stop there, however, as he unlocked the “GM,” or Grand Master, ranking. This would make him the 6th person in the world, and first outside of Japan to do so.

Achieving Grand Master status is no joke – one would need to obtain a MasterM ranking at least four times in their most recent seven games, and out of that, you might just be able to take a stab at a Grand Master promotional exam, where you would need to call upon a near flawless performance.

After two hours of play, Birrell saw that window of opportunity opened up, and he managed to seized it with a triumphant performance. Of course, this is after 8 years of gameplay, and Birrell did say, “That’s it. Yo, I just beat Tetris.” Makes me wonder what the reaction from the other five Japanese gamers were like.

Pre-Order Your Next Batch Of Amiibo Figures Now!

amiibo-preorderIt looks as though the upcoming batch of Nintendo’s amiibo figurines are in the pipeline, which means you might want to be one of the early birds out there to obtain the proverbial worm. The upcoming sextet of toys were specially designed for Mario Party 10, and those who are interested will already be able to place a pre-order from Amazon. After all, collectors who are serious will definitely go for this more-or-less done deal, without having to worry about missing out on a single amiibo later on.

The Super Mario amiibo set will include the likes of Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser and Toad, with Mario being made available as part of a Mario Party 10 bundle for Wii U. There will be no difference between these amiibos in terms of their function, as they work in the same manner as that as already-released versions which were based on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, although they do have that more charming aesthetics about them without clear plastic propping them up.

Mario Party 10 with the associated amiibo toys are tipped for a March 20 release Stateside. The Toad amiibo has been confirmed to play nice with Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, where one can unlock various pixelated Toad characters in the game.

Huawei Mate7 Compact Images Leaked Out Again

mate7compact-leakIt was not too long ago that we did bring you word about the Huawei Mate7 Compact, where there has been whispers going around that this particular handset is all set to receive an unveiling over at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, later this coming March 1st. In fact, invitations to the event have already been sent out, and the Huawei Mate7 Compact is widely tipped to be less unwieldy compared to the full-sized version of the smartphone, for obvious reasons – where one can also tell from the name itself. Needless to say, this is all relative, since the handset still carries a 5.5” display, while being smaller than a 6” display, is still not as compact as a sub-5” handset. Yet another two photos of the alleged Huawei Mate7 Compact have leaked as you can see above.

The tweet from @leaksfly showed off the two shots of the alleged Huawei Mate7 Compact, and one can only assume that other than the change in the screen size, just about everything else about the Huawei Mate7 Compact ought to be the same as that of the larger sized sibling. All in all, we will just have to play the patience card to see whether this handset will live up to its reputation when it arrives.

Chess Computer Program Weighs In At Just 487 Bytes

bootchessCertainly this French coder would most probably still think that 640k is enough for everyone – especially when you see that his chess computer program is stored on jst 487 bytes of code. That is certainly an insanely small amount of memory no matter how you look at it, and even more so in this day and age where a game would take up a few gigabytes’ worth of data. Known as BootChess, the 487 bytes’ worth of source code is so magical, it can run on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux computers to boot.

Just to see the magnitude of things in the long run, BootChess happens to be smaller than 1K ZX Chess, where the latter is a Sinclair ZX81 computer game that carried just 672 bytes of code. The thing is, 1K ZX Chess has been the record holder for the better part of 33 years, and now that BootChess has arrived, it just goes to show how far things have progressed. Olivier Poudade has hopes that his achievement will be able to be an inspiration to different programmers out there to be more involved in the “sizecoding” scene.

Poudade mentioned, “[It] demonstrates why assembly language is still the language of choice to excel [at] in programming.”

Bing Venue Maps Lets You Navigate Through Stadiums

Bing-Venue-MapsGetting around these days are a whole lot easier than ever before, especially when there is this thing known as GPS. Dedicated GPS navigation devices are just about extinct, as we rely on other apps like Google Maps to get around. Microsoft knows that this can be quite the lucrative sector, which is why their Bing Maps program ain’t too shabby at all, too. For those of you out there who intend to make your way to Phoenix for the Super Bowl later this year, you would definitely need some help to navigate through a monstrous venue like the University of Phoenix Stadium, which is home of the Arizona Cardinals. Bing Maps has been updated by Microsoft to help you find your way to – as well as in and around the University of Phoenix Stadium itself.

For those who happen to have a Windows 8.1 device, there is the added advantage of being able to check out the stadium in 3D glory, now how about that for variety? There will also be an update to Bing Maps for Sunday’s game that will include both aerial 2D and 3D imagery of the University of Phoenix Stadium, accompanied by the surrounding area. [Press Release]

Windows Phone To Get FLAC Support, Too

windows-phone-logoIt has been known for quite some time now that those who are going to rock to the Windows 10 operating system will be able to enjoy native access to the lossless audio format known as FLAC. Well, having said that, what about smartphones which run on the Windows Phone platform? Good news for audiophiles as well as those who would want close to perfect playback of their music – Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore has tweeted the confirmation that support for FLAC files will also eventually make their way to the Windows Phone platform.

According to Belfiore, “Yes, FLAC support will be on phones/small tablets… won’t be in the first insider build, though, will be a few months later..” Right, a few months later. That should not be too long to wait, actually, taking into consideration how Windows Phone users have had to wait far longer than that in the past in order to enjoy apps that had been on other platforms for quite some time already.

At least Windows Phone users will no longer need to fall back on outside codecs or programs in the mould of VLC in order to play back such high quality audio files on their handsets down the road.
