DJI Disables Flights Over DC Area Following Drone Crash At White House

It was first reported on Monday that Secret Service had recovered a “package” from the White House grounds. We later found out that it was a DJI Phantom drone which had crashed into the grounds of the president’s residence. Not only was the operator against FAA regulations by operating the drone in that area, Secret Service personnel were also told that he was apparently drinking at the time. DJI is taking a strict action and will now restrict its drones from flying over the DC area.

This isn’t a first for DJI. The company has previously said that its drones are programmed to stop flying once they reach a certain distance from airports. Drones have GPS which can track the location and figure out which locations are out of bounds.

This marks the first time that DJI is going to restrict its drones from flying over a metro area. Given the security concerns involved its probably for the best.

In a press release sent out this morning DJI said that its going to release a “mandatory firmware update” for Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision and Phantom 2 Vision+ drones to ensure compliance with FAA’s Notice to Airmen 0/8326 which prohibits unmanned flight around the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

It further states that this firmware update will be released in the next few days and will add a No-Fly Zone that’s centered on downtown Washington, DC and will extend for a 25 kilometer radius in all directions.

Simply put Phantom drones will not be able to take off from or fly in this zone.

PlayStation Music Arriving On PlayStation Network This Spring

spotify-psBoth Spotify and PlayStation have come together to work in the direction of a common goal – and that is, to roll out a brand new service which will be known as PlayStation Music. PlayStation Music is set to arrive on the PlayStation Network later this spring, so do keep a keen eye (and ear) out, all right?

Most of the time, when something new arrives, then the old will need to go. Having said that, this new service would see the end of PlayStation’s previous offering, which is known as Music Unlimited, this coming March 29. PlayStation users will be able to link up their accounts to Spotify and start enjoying playback of its free, ad-supported streaming music, or decide to drop $10 each month for its premium service that will run sans any irritating ads, and will even be playable when there is no Internet connection at all.

While additional features will be announced in due time, we do know that Spotify’s music will be playable in the background when you are gaming. Expect the new PlayStation Music to be made available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and Sony’s Xperia smartphones and tablets, although it does not seem that the PlayStation Vita will be on the receiving end of this “benefit”. HTC Follows Xiaomi’s Footsteps In Hardware Sales Tactic

htc-logoYou know how cliched things can get – and yet, it is also effective in its own way. If you cannot beat ‘em, then join ‘em. While this is not a hard and fast rule, it does seem to work in the world of business. Take HTC for instance – the Taiwan-based company recently announced that a week from now, it will introduce a 24-hour online store over in Taiwan, where this HTC eStore will commence operations at 10pm Taiwan time from next Wednesday onward.

This move will see a couple of mid-tier handsets being offered, namely the HTC Desire 816G and the HTC Desire 826G, where they will both be able to let you differentiate your personal and professional lives on a single handset, thanks to the presence of dual SIM card slots. Not only that, octa-core processors underneath the hood ought to get the job done without too much fuss at all, and it is also tipped that HTC might very well introduce additional entry-level models to the store down the road.

HTC will no doubt look in the direction of its new online store to roll out new handsets and perhaps seek a different avenue in terms of obtaining more revenue – which could expand further if it works out at the end of the day.

LG To Mass Produce Flexible Plastic OLED Displays This Year

lg-flexible-oledLG Display has had gone through a rather successful fiscal quarter, and it seems there is more good news on the way – at least for those who are involved in mobile devices. LG Display is touted to deliver what they call as the “true flexible” Plastic OLED screen to everyone later this July. It seems that there has been various flexible displays already, seen in the LG G Flex 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, but there must be steps made forward into the future – with word that G is working on mass producing Plastic OLED screens that will offer a unique bending radius of 1.18”.

Of course, apart from being able to perform such acrobatic twists and turns, these new Plastic OLED displays are shatter-proof. Their imaging parameters happen to stay within 60lm/W efficiency, 75lm (807 nits) peak brightness output, 3000K in color temperature, and CRI over 85. It might not be too accurate in terms of its color, but perhaps new modifications and improvements made to the technology will change things in the long run.

How will all of these change the way that LG works where their OLED TVs are concerned? Only time will be able to tell, of course, so we will just have to play the patience card.

Amazon Reduces Price Of Fire Phone – For A Day

firephone-displayRegardless of the amount of optimism that you have, to call the Amazon Fire Phone a success would be a classic case of lying to yourself at best. The handset does have a whole lot of growing up to do, for sure, since there are many things that one can find fault with, ranging from the user interface that has its fair share of shortcomings, to its exclusivity deal with AT&T, not to mention a price tag that does not do justice to the kind of hardware packed underneath the hood. Having said that, one might wonder whether a really low price would encourage people to actually pick it up? Those who happen to be in the UK and have more than just a passing interest in the Fire Phone would see a price cut – for a single day only, of course.

One will be able to own the 32GB Fire Phone from Amazon for £99 off-contract, which would mean a savings of £300 off the regular price. For those who feel that they would need more than just 32GB, then you can always opt for the 64GB model that will see a £330 discount, resulting in a payment of just £149. Do realize that the Amazon Fire Phone will remain exclusive to the O2 UK network.

Alaska Airlines To Offer Windows Tablets On Select Flights

alaska-airlines-inflightFlying does not seem to be all that fun these days – especially when you take into consideration the cramped airports, not to mention small economy class seats, and lousy airline food. Well, while the entertainment aspect on flights have become better over the years, this does not mean that there is no room for improvement. Alaska Airlines has just announced that they will be offering Windows tablets to passengers on some of its flights.

These Windows tablets (hopefully not the discontinued Surface 2) would be able to offer access to various media such as music, games and videos on longer-distance flights. This initiative is set to kick off from the first of next month, where the new ‘Inflight Entertainment tablets powered by Microsoft’ will be available to those who are jetting it out on long-haul flights.

Those who happen to be in First Class, in addition to top-tier frequent flyers, can enjoy the use of such tablets for free. As for the other passengers, there will be a fee of $8 and $10 in order to rent the tablet throughout the flight. There will be pre-loaded Xbox games for Windows, such as Microsoft Sudoku, Solitaire Collection and Mahjong. With so many people owning tablets these days, why not just bring your own tablet and use it in-flight? [Press Release]

AT&T Superhero Series Coming Soon To Snapchat

AT&T Tower

AT&T today announced that its launching a new superhero series. Don’t expect it to air on any of the major networks, or through some online streaming service, this series will actually be the first scripted series that’s distributed over Snapchat. It doesn’t take much to put two and two together. With this new initiative AT&T wants to reach out to millions of teens who use Snapchat to rope them in for its other services.

If the focus on millennials wasn’t clear, take into account that AT&T is also leaning on some of the biggest YouTube and Vine stars to push the “SnapperHero” series. Stars and influencers include Anna Akana, Harley Morenstein of Epic Meal Time, Freddie Wong of Video Game High School and others. Shonduras or Shaun McBride will serve as Creative Director.

These social media personalities will involve their audiences in the process. AT&T says input from fans will determine plot lines, costumes, origin stories, superhero identities and enemies.

Once everything is done and dusted the 12 episode series will be released over a four week period over Snapchat. Each episode will disappear after 24 hours.

All episodes will be available for viewing through the @SnapperHero account. Interestingly it won’t be included in the Discover feed, a new feature that Snapchat announced just yesterday, that primarily focuses on putting media content front and center.

Square Enix Teases ‘Project CODE Z’

code-zSquare Enix is famous for their Final Fantasy franchise, but it is always good not to place all of your eggs in a single basket. Hence, it is no surprise at all to hear that Project Code Z has been teased – although more will be revealed this coming January 31, which ain’t too far away, really. Just in case you were wondering, the “Z” in Project Code Z stands for the “Zeni” that one would be spending where microtransactions are concerned.

The teaser site for the game has already been launched, where all will be revealed at Japan’s Tokaigi event later this Saturday. Apart from that, it does seem as though Project Code Z will end up as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, so too bad for those who are rocking to other platforms such as the Xbox One and the Nintendo Wii U.

Right now, a whole lot of it is just pure speculation, and it can be rather difficult to pinpoint as to whether there are any Square Enix games out there that do come with the letter “Z” right at the beginning. Apart from that, the images in the “Z” does change from time to time, depicting various landscapes within that are very zen to say the least.

Samsung Gear VR Available From Best Buy

gear-vr-innovator-edition

Samsung launched the Gear VR headset at IFA 2014 last September. Its the first virtual reality headset that Samsung has commercially launched. Gear VR was built in collaboration with Oculus, a virtual reality company owned by Facebook that’s working on a headset of its own. Customers could purchase this device either from AT&T or Samsung but now they have another option. Best Buy has started selling the Gear VR.

As a standalone device the Gear VR is of absolutely no use. The $200 virtual reality headset doesn’t have a built-in display like the Oculus VR headsets instead it relies upon a smartphone, the Galaxy Note 4 to be precise, to provide the display.

So whoever is looking to purchase Gear VR from Best Buy to try it out should keep in mind that they also need to have a Galaxy Note 4 on hand, otherwise they won’t be able to do anything with this device, and that would be a waste of $200.

Those who do have the Galaxy Note 4 can take advantage of the experiences that Samsung has created for Gear VR users. Keep in mind though that customers can’t waltz in their local Best Buy and pick one up. This thing isn’t available at retail stores.

Best Buy is only selling the Gear VR online, visit its online store to purchase one, or stick with AT&T and Samsung. They’re all selling it online.

apple_logo

Yesterday Apple announced record breaking quarterly results. iPhone sales have soared taking the company’s profits along with them. $18 billion was earned in profit over the previous quarter that’s the most profit any company on the fact of this planet has ever posted. Not only that Apple CEO Tim Cook also revealed during the quarterly conference call that the company shipped its one billionth iOS device during the December quarter. That’s right, the one billionth iOS device.

To date Apple has shipped more than one billion iPhone, iPad and iPod touch units combined. It is a testament to Apple’s strength and position of dominance in the global market. Its also a major milestone that Apple has every right to celebrate.

During the conference call Cook said that the one billionth iOS device was shipped on November 22nd. It was a 64GB iPhone 6 Plus in space-gray “which we’ve saved here at Apple.”

Cook also put into perspective the iPhone’s record 74.5 million unit sales during the quarter. This comes down to 34,000 units being sold every single hour, “24 hours a day, every day of the quarter.”

Following the company’s record breaking results analysts are now changing their position on Apple. Cupertino itself sees ample room for further growth and now its a race to the second billionth unit shipment for Apple.
