Exynos 7420 Chipset Benchmarked

exynos-benchmarkIt has been said that there are several variants of Samsung’s upcoming flagship device, the Galaxy S6, which will run with the Exynos 7420 chipset underneath the hood. Well, what do we know of the Exynos 7420 chipset? This chipset has more or less gone through the wringer over at Geekbench, where the single-core score which was racked up touched the 1,520 figure, while the multi-core tally managed to hit 5,478. Of course, it would make sense if these test scores were garnered through a Samsung Galaxy S6 prototype instead of the market ready model that will still take quite some time before it arrives officially.

As for the clock speed, it was listed down at 1.5GHz, which is most probably the result of the slower Cortex A-53 in action. The big.LITTLE chip within would make use of the latter cores when it comes to slower and less intensive tasks, whereas the Cortex A-57 would take care of the the heavy lifting.

It seems as though the benchmark test did list down the Galaxy S6 prototype to carry 3GB RAM – which is 1GB short of the speculation that 4GB would accompany the handset right out of the box. Of course, do bear in mind that this is but a prototype, so nothing has been confirmed just yet until the real deal arrives.

Windows 10 On Devices Smaller Than 8-inches Won’t Get A Desktop

microsoft logoWindows 10 is Microsoft’s latest upcoming operating system. The operating system will be a huge step forward for Microsoft as they attempt to unify both the PC and mobile user experience. Previously the company had separate operating systems, such as Windows Phone for smartphones, Windows RT for tablets (or ARM-based devices), and Windows 8 for PCs.

That being said, while it appears that PC and mobile devices in the future will come with Windows 10, the experience will be different. There are still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding Windows 10 and Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore has recently taken to Twitter to clarify some of them, in particular to the desktop feature.

According to Belfiore, devices that have a display 8-inches or larger will get access to the desktop, but those smaller than 8-inches, such as smartphones or smaller tablets, will not have the desktop feature, which we guess kind of makes sense. After all what good would the desktop be on a 5-inch display, right?

However this also highlights how it is possible that we could look forward to 8-inch tablets in the future running on Windows 10 that could act as mini-desktop machines, which would be an interesting form factor. It also helps serve as a distinguishing factor to help users make their decision on which size of a tablet they want as it could have different interfaces.

Microsoft: 10.5 Million Lumia Handsets Sold In Q4 2014

microsoft__logoIt was an interesting move, albeit somewhat unsurprising and natural transition when Microsoft announced that they would acquire Nokia’s cellphone division. Given the close ties that Nokia and Microsoft had, the acquisition would basically give Microsoft the ability to churn out their own brand of smartphones, which they have started doing under the Lumia banner.

That being, how has Microsoft’s Lumia sales been so far? As it turns out it looks like they’re doing pretty well. According to the latest numbers announced by Microsoft as part of the results for their last quarter that ended in Q4 2014, it has been revealed that Microsoft has managed to pull in $2.3 billion in revenue from their mobile division from hardware sales alone.

It has also been revealed that the Redmond company managed to sell 10.5 million Lumia units in that time. This is an increase from 9.3 million smartphones sold in Q3 2014 and 8.2 million in Q4 2013, so safe to say it looks like Microsoft’s smartphone sales are on the rise. However it should be noted that despite the increase in sales, revenue has dropped slightly from $2.6 billion.

This is apparently due to the loss of licensing revenue from Nokia after the acquisition, but hopefully the increase in hardware sales and the upwards trend will be able to make up for that in future quarters. The IDC also notes that this is the first time Microsoft has managed to sell more than 10 million Windows Phone handsets in a quarter.

Toshiba KIRA Ultrabooks Get Updated

kira-updatedUltrabooks are fun to use – they take so little time to boot up, and are lightweight enough for you to tote around without breaking your back, especially when you are on the showfloor walking around. Well, Toshiba of Japan has their KIRAbook range of devices that sport both of the qualities mentioned, and this time around, the KIRA range has been updated to boast of the fifth generation Intel Core “Broadwell” processors underneath the hood.

Other hardware specifications in the new models would include a 13.3”, 1920 x 1080 pixel or 2560 x 1440 pixel displays, 8GB RAM, 128GB to 256GB of internal memory, and Intel Core i7 Broadwell processors.

Having unveiled the latest batch of Toshiba Dynabook KIRA laptops in Japan not too long ago, they look set to go on sale in the Far East from approximately $1,350 (after conversion) and above. So far, there has been no whispers of a US release just yet where these notebooks are concerned, although we do know that Toshiba KIRAbook models have been spotted in the US market for several years now. These tend to be light, thin and powerful, and if my memory serves me correctly, the KIRA family of Ultrabooks and notebooks happened to be the one of the first few Windows notebooks that arrived with WQHD or higher resolution displays.

Snapchat’s “Discover” Original Content Feature Will Debut Tomorrow [Rumor]

snapchatAs some of you might have heard, Snapchat is reportedly working on creating more original content as opposed to just being content with being another instant messaging app, but when exactly will we be able to see this new content being offered? Well if a recent report from The New York Post (via Re/code) is to be believed, tomorrow could be when it makes its debut.

Last we heard, Snapchat’s original content was expected to debut “soon”, and we guess a launch tomorrow would allow it to fall into that “soon” category. Unsurprisingly Snapchat has yet to comment on the rumor, but if it is true we won’t have to wait much longer to find that out for ourselves.

For those who are hearing this for the first time, Snapchat’s original content is expected to be curated from a variety of sources. This includes sources such as CNN, ESPN, Vice, Warner Music, and more. The content will include music, videos, articles, and photos, and will also provide Snapchat with a platform in which they can sell ads and share the revenue with publishers.

While it does sound like a good idea, the question is will Snapchat’s users want such a feature to begin with? To a certain extent it sounds like BlackBerry’s BBM Channels in which companies can take advantage of the platform to push ads and announcements, but what say you? Is this a direction you would like to see Snapchat headed towards?

Apple shuttering TestFlight’s standalone service, moves it in-house

U.S. Contractor Awarded More Than $1 Billion Is Suspended Over 'Serious Misconduct'

WASHINGTON, Jan 26 (Reuters) – The United States said on Monday it had suspended International Relief and Development, a non-profit aid contractor which won major U.S. contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan, after finding “serious misconduct” involving funding.

“The agency’s review revealed serious misconduct in IRD’s performance, management, internal controls and present responsibility,” the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the United States’ premier aid agency, said in a statement.

USAID contracts with IRD in Afghanistan amounted to more than $1 billion and roughly $85.57 million in Iraq between 2006 and 2014, according to statistics provided by USAID. The agency also won U.S. contracts for work in other countries.

IRD said in a statement it was cooperating fully with USAID and was working on a response to address the agency’s concerns and re-establish trust.

“According to the notification, USAID is taking this action principally due to specific instances of, and failure to detect, alleged mischarging of unallowable expenses by a former IRD officer, and inadequate financial management controls,” IRD said.

USAID said its decision was based on a zero-tolerance policy for mismanagement of American taxpayer funds. Some 230 contractors have been suspended since the inception of a special investigating unit in 2011, USAID said. (Reporting by Lesley Wroughton; Editing by Sandra Maler and Grant McCool)

Rashida Jones Corrects Reporter's Comment On Her 'Very Tan' Look: 'I'm Ethnic' (VIDEO)

This year’s annual Screen Actors Guild Awards prompted many touching moments including two empowering acceptance speeches from “Orange Is The New Black” star Uzo Aduba, as she took home the award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Comedy series and “How To Get Away With Murder” star Viola Davis, who won the award for Best Actress In A Drama Series.

However another highlight, aside from Aduba and Davis’ captivating speeches, took place earlier on Sunday evening during the event’s live red carpet coverage, where TNT correspondent, Danielle Demski questioned actress, Rashida Jones’ “very tan” appearance.

“You look like you’ve just come off an island or something. You’re very tan. Very tropical,” Demski said to the biracial “Parks and Recreation” star whose father is music legend Quincy Jones.

It was an awkward comment to which Jones quickly responded, “I mean, you know, I’m ethnic.”
