Google’s MVNO Can Automatically Swap Between Sprint/T-Mobile For Best Coverage

google-logo-2011-10-25According to a rumor we had heard a few days ago, Google was working on something called Project Nova that would basically allow the company to offer its users wireless services as an MVNO (as opposed to a full-fledged carrier like AT&T, Verizon, and etc.). Google is also said to have purchased spectrum from the likes of both T-Mobile and Sprint.

Now for those who are a little worried about coverage, it seems that this is where the spectrum bought from T-Mobile and Sprint comes into play. According to The Wall Street Journal, they have heard that instead of forcing the user to choose their carrier of choice, like how Straight Talk has you choose between AT&T or T-Mobile, Google’s Project Nova will be able to alternate between T-Mobile or Sprint automatically, depending on which particular carrier offers the best signal in that particular you in.

However we’re not sure if the switching of carriers will interrupt the usage of your device. For example switching from WiFi to LTE and vice versa sometimes results in a temporary loss of connection as your phone tries to hook onto its new connection, so we’re not sure if this automatic switching will affect you in the same way, or maybe even dropping your calls in the process.

Either way it’s still an intriguing idea and one where hopefully the kinks are being worked out to allow for a smoother and more seamless operation. There is still no word on when Google’s Project Nova will officially kick off, but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for a possible announcement.

LG Ice Cream Smart Android Flip Phone Launched

lg ice cream smartAbout a week ago we reported that LG appeared to be working on a flip phone running Android called the LG Ice Cream Smart. Now we’re not sure in this day and age how popular the flip phone is, but we guess in some markets there is still a demand for such devices and yes, it looks like LG has made the device official.

We should start off by saying that the LG Ice Cream Smart is not the most beautiful Android smartphone we’ve seen, but given that it will retail for $270, it is somewhat affordable, although to be fair you could get a phone with a larger display for less. The Ice Cream Smart will combine a touchscreen display and a numeric keypad.

The keypad also means that QWERTY typing is out of the question and users will have to rely on T9 texting which was the standard back in the day. If you miss T9 typing methods then we guess this should do the trick. The keypad will also provide users with shortcuts to launch apps such as KakaoTalk, camera, and email.

No word on the rest of the phone’s specs or if LG plans on bringing it stateside, but given that the press release was in South Korea, it seems unlikely that we would see it arrive in the US, although you could try your luck via grey market imports if you absolutely have to have it.

Dominos Pizza Tracker App Arrives For Samsung Smart TVs

dominos-trackerThe 2015 Super Bowl is only a week away and we’re sure many of you guys have plans to stay home and catch the game in the comfort of your living room, surrounded by all kinds of fast food, snacks, and drinks. Now pizza would be a great choice as it is not only tasty, it is easily shared, and for customers of Dominos, you will be pleased to learn that they have launched a new app for Samsung’s Smart TVs.

The new app is basically the Pizza Tracker app that will be usable on Samsung Smart TVs bought in 2014 or newer. Basically what this does, in case the name itself wasn’t a dead giveaway, is that it allows the customer to track their pizza in real time via their TV screen. The tracker will appear at the bottom side of the TV and will track every step of the order.

This includes when the order is placed, when the pizza is being made, when it is cooked, and so on, all the way until it has been delivered right to your doorstep. Dominos’ Pizza Tracker feature isn’t a new one, as customers of Dominos are probably aware, but instead of having to keep checking on your phone or on your computer, this will allow you to keep your eye on the TV and the pizza at the same time. Like we said the Super Bowl kicks off next week and Dominos already has plans on delivering more than 11 million pizza slices and 3 million chicken wings.

Marriott’s Android App Found To Have Exposed Customers Credit Card Data

231830_Marriott_RoofSignPerhaps when we think of luxurious hotels, we might think of hotels such as Marriott, but when we think about tech snafus, unfortunately Marriott’s name pops up not just once, but twice. Not only did Marriott make the news when they decided to block personal WiFi hotspots of their guests, which they then changed their mind later, a recent report has revealed that Marriott’s Android app has left customers’ credit card information open to hackers for the past four years.

This is according to Randy Westergren, a senior software developer who had recently discovered that Marriott’s Android app had a serious vulnerability that basically allowed hackers to access customer information, such as their financial details, on Marriott’s servers without the need for a password.

This vulnerability has reportedly been around since the app made its debut in 2011. The problem stemmed from the fact that the hotel’s Android app did not use any type of token or authorization data to access reservations, which Westergren tested for himself by creating a script that crawled through reservations numbers until it stumbled upon a valid one, and all he needed was the customer’s name and number to access their accounts on Marriott’s servers.

Thankfully Marriott has since plugged the vulnerability a day after Westergren reported the issue to the hotel chain, but in the meantime it is unclear as to how many credit card numbers might have been compromised since then. In the meantime if you have used the app, perhaps you should start keeping an eye on your credit card statements for any suspicious activities.

Apple’s iPhone Is Starting To Gain On Samsung’s Sales

apple_logoWhen it comes to the world’s largest smartphone makers, Samsung and Apple take the number one and two spots, although Samsung has been leading the way ever since 2011. However it looks like Samsung could be steadily losing ground as Apple catches up, according to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal.

Samsung had overtaken Apple in the third quarter of 2011, but the recent numbers according to research firm Canalys has revealed that Samsung’s share has been taking a dive. For example Samsung had only managed to ship 78 million smartphones in the third quarter, which is about 25% of the global smartphone market share and where last year they had managed 34%, which is admittedly a rather steep drop.

Apple’s lead has also to do with the Cupertino company’s new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus handsets which has helped to boost their sales. It was a few days ago where we heard that in the US, iPhones accounted for 50% of smartphone activations in Q4 2014 versus Samsung’s 26%. The company has also been doing well in Samsung’s home market of South Korea where they nabbed 33% of the market.

In any case the official numbers from Apple are expected to be announced tomorrow, so do check back with us then for the details.

All About That Bass

2015-01-26-Huff_MB_1.jpg

“The bass is the base…” He chuckles. He is Michael Brown, bassist for arguably the hardest working band in show business, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Band, specifically, the band for Ringling Bros. ® Presents LEGENDSSM. It is the Blue Unit of the storied franchise that inhabits three touring shows, each with its own live band.

“What I play and how I play it determines how you will hear the music and how you will feel the music,” says Brown. It is a sentiment I can attest to as the voice of The Greatest Show On Earth®. Countless times while belting out those original circus hits, accompanied by the Ringling Bros. Band, my body will take to an unconscious sway, with hands clapping and toes tapping, and my voice will instinctively riff as if possessed.

For nearly a decade, Michael Brown’s bass has been “the base” for the melodic sounds of The Greatest Show On Earth, establishing his ever-evolving brand of musicality. To know him is to immediately recognize that he is both a fan and student of the instrument. Names like Victor Wooden, Louis Johnson, Jaco Pastorious, Stanley Clarke, Larry Graham, James Jamerson and Bernard Edwards are among Brown’s musical heroes. Therefore, they are the standard for which he aspires.

“I have started to incorporate active rest during intermissions. I work on something like dexterity or playing a bass line that I am learning. I frequently go back and relearn bass lines that I have not played in a while for their groove factor,” says Brown. “Right now my approach can be called work-study. I practice at home, which is the famed Ringling Bros. Circus train, and in between shows like I’m studying before my next class. I am never bored musically because there is always something to do or learn.”

To some, this kind of devotion to craft may seem remarkable when one considers the demands of his job as well as the stability it affords he and his bandmates. That stability is something many musicians can only hope for. This is a fact that is never lost on Brown or his fellow musicians. With such stability and the demands of the job at hand, the temptation to merely coast by might very well arise. However, Michael Brown is as committed to his music as he is humbled by the opportunity he has been given to share it. The journey he took to arrive at this coveted place in his career is never far from his mind.

Music entered the Chicago native’s life in the same way it does with many people. It arrived through radio, television, family gatherings, etc. However, for some, music beckons as more than a passing interest.

“I was at a relative’s house who had a bass player staying there as a guest. I picked up the bass put it on my knee and against my chest and plucked the E string. The vibration went though my whole body and I was hooked! I was now going to be a bass player!” says Brown.

During his high school years, music was very kind and acted as a savior for Brown. It granted him a vehicle to focus his adolescent energies and redirect his angst brought on by issues at home. However, like so many once aspiring musicians (or artists for that matter) he would eventually betray that first love, music — sort of.

“I went to Vandercook College of Music to become a music teacher but that was not where my heart was; I wanted to play music,” says Brown. For the next several years of his life, Brown would reap the wages of his lackluster commitment to music in the form of odd jobs ranging from a bouncer to a certified personal trainer to a DJ at a roller skating rink to a newspaper deliveryman to a bank messenger. He actually worked his way up to a comfortable management position in banking before eventually being laid off.

Brown’s life, at this juncture, was the prophetic embodiment of what the great P.T. Barnum once mused, “Unless a man enters upon the vocation intended for him by nature, and best suited to his peculiar genius, he cannot succeed.” For Brown it became abundantly clear that there are no successful part-time musicians, just as there are no successful part-time physicians or athletes, etc. That which is “intended for [us] by nature” will not reward our partial efforts. Fortunately, for Brown — and probably a great many others — one’s calling can be quite forgiving. He would eventually find his way back to “the vocation intended for him by nature,” this time with a full-time effort, upon the high seas, no less, aboard a number of cruise ships. There, he would recommit himself, expand his knowledge and advance the skills needed for his craft. It was during a stop in Alaska that he received a call from renowned bassist and instructor Anthony Wellington about an opening for a circus gig that would pave the way to a career with The Greatest Show On Earth.

2015-01-26-Huff_MB_2.jpg

Intermission is coming to a close in just a few minutes when I hear the alarm to Brown’s watch begin to sound. Suddenly, our conversation is cut short. “Sorry, but I’ve got to go,” he says as he hurries back to his post at the bandstand to prepare for the second half of the show.

I’ve known of few artists, if any, who are as cognizant of their role within a collective as is Michael Brown. “For years now I have been trusted to play the music the way I think it should be played. That has meant me playing fretless bass, using effects, switching basses during a show — whatever I think will make the music better for the show. I believe that is where the trust lies. I have demonstrated that I have the show and the audience in mind when I play, not just showboating,” he says.

From the trapeze artist throwing the triple somersault to the Cossack riders sprinting to leap upon the back of their steed to a two-stepping performing pachyderm to the scintillating sway of a dancer’s hips, it is all about that bass and the music it anchors that heightens each thrill and accentuates the experience that is Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey.

For Brown, his glory is in the shadows. Ever present yet hardly noticed at all, and he would have it no other way. For Brown it means he is fulfilling his role within the collective. “If I’m doing my job correctly you are very seldom aware of me,” he says.

That’s unless one might catch him dancing while strumming his bass, during one of the show’s more festive numbers. “When you see someone dancing it is hard not to have a good time,” he says. Indeed, it’s that “good time” he has committed himself to sharing with Children Of All Ages, from city to city, coast to coast. It’s the kind of “good time” for which only the joy of living the life of your dreams can produce.

America's Best Cities for Singles (PHOTOS)

The singles scene in New York City is a little crazy, maybe even certifiably so.

“This is a city with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but only in the best ways,” says Rachel Harrison, a Brooklyn-based public relations exec. “You can dress a little wilder, slap on some fake eyelashes–you can do anything you want, at any age. There are no judgments.”

Unabashedly batting those faux lashes got the Big Apple more than a few second glances this year. New York City landed in the top 10 for the best cities for singles, according to Travel + Leisure readers. In this year’s America’s Favorite Places survey, readers ranked 38 cities on dozens of appealing qualities, including good-looking locals, cool shopping, and hipster-magnet coffee bars.

The winning cities in the singles-scene category excel in the off-hours, ranking highly for nightclubs, dive bars, and even great diners, where you might lock eyes with someone over a late-night order of fries.

But the most singles-friendly cities also put a creative spin on conventional meet-up spots. Plenty of big attractions–from the Brooklyn Museum to the San Diego Museum of Art–offer monthly happy hours, wooing artsy singles with cocktails and live music. In Boston, one of the coolest bookstores does Trivia Nights, while in downtown L.A. a popular bar stocks old-school video games.

Another strategy for uncovering a city’s best singles scene is exploring the activities that locals love most. “New Orleanians live and breathe festivals–like Jazz Fest, and even Creole Tomato Fest,” says native Stephen Schmitz. Just be warned: “The heat and humidity,” he says, “can make for a rough appearance.”

Read on for the full results. And make your point of view heard by voting in the America’s Favorite Places survey.

Gary Sinise Criticizes Howard Dean Over 'Stupid Blanket Statements' On 'American Sniper'

On Friday’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Howard Dean said there was maybe “a lot of intersection” between people seeing Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” and members of the Tea Party.

“There’s a lot of anger in this country. And the people who go see this movie are people who are very angry,” Dean said about the film, which focuses on the life of Chris Kyle, a deceased Navy SEAL who has been called the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history. “This guy basically says, ‘I’m going to fight on your side.’ They bite for it.”

Dean’s comments didn’t sit well with many conservatives, including Gary Sinise. On Monday, the actor posted a rebuttal to Dean that called out the former governor for making “stupid blanket statements.”

“I saw ‘American Sniper’ and would not consider myself to be an angry person. You certainly have a right to make stupid blanket statements, suggesting that all people who see this film are angry, but how is that helpful sir?” Sinise wrote on his WhoSay page. “Do you also suggest that everyone at Warner Brothers is angry because they released the film? That Clint Eastwood, Jason Hall, Bradley Cooper, Sienna Miller and the rest of the cast and crew are angry because they made the film? Chris Kyle’s story deserved to be told. It tells a story of the stress that multiple deployments have on one military family, a family representative of thousands of military families. It helps to communicate the toll that the war on terror has taken on our defenders. Defenders and families who need our support. I will admit that perhaps somewhere among the masses of people who are going to see the film there may be a few that might have some anger or have been angry at some point in their lives, but, with all due respect, what the hell are you talking about?”

The battle over “American Sniper” has raged on in the wake of the film’s record-breaking box office, with cultural figures like Sinise, Kid Rock and Sarah Palin attacking Dean, Seth Rogen and Michael Moore for their comments on the drama.

Eastwood has stayed at a distance from the debate, but he did discuss the film during an event this past weekend. The director noted that “American Sniper” had “anti-war” values at its core because of how it depicts Kyle’s struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder. Eastwood had earlier said the film wasn’t political in nature.

Get Your Groove Back in Midlife

Many of us have been thrown into the crazy, mixed up world of dating not by choice and totally by surprise. Marriages fail and spouses die. Let’s face it, we’re meant to share a life with someone. We don’t like to admit it, but living alone can get rather lonely after a while.

In the beginning, we get used to sleeping in the big king-sized bed smack in the middle without the lovely sound of snoring. There’s no one pulling the covers away or watching late night TV as you try to find your sleep.

On a cold snowy night as you read a book, there might come a time when you will think how nice it would be if there was another body next to you, quietly sharing the same experience.

Here comes the big question: Is it worth the effort, to find your way back to sharing a life with someone?

We all know what it will be like if we don’t. Nothing changes, life goes on and the longer we wait to find out, the harder it will get to discover your groove.

If we decide to take the leap again, we need to do it with an open heart and with open eyes. We know too much this time. We cannot afford another disaster.

You need to start with a crystal clear list of what you need in a person as opposed to what you want. The same list should also have what you absolutely will not accept. In midlife, the window of opportunity is smaller and shrinking this very minute. There isn’t much wiggle room for mistakes.

Go back to when you first dated. Get in touch with that person who would find excitement in the possibility of falling in love. Listen to music that makes your heart beat faster. Let yourself dream and fantasize about the magic of love. It does come back. Remember the feeling of chemistry. The first kiss and the expectations of more.

Don’t let fear and self-doubt prohibit the opportunity of falling in love. Many have allowed themselves to shut down to these emotions. Love can be a great motivator. You will eat healthier, work out more, sleep much better and enjoy the dance of romance.

Don’t be afraid to join online dating sites. Make sure you are very selective and don’t allow yourself to get pulled in by a handsome face. Search deeper and look at this as you would a business deal. You’re in it for the long haul and you don’t want to find any hidden secrets. You are investing in your life.

Continue on your journey with steadfast intentions and a strong purpose. You’re an empowered woman. Looking for an empowered man. Join together in the world as a team. Share your wisdom, your families and your love.

It’s never too late to find the love of your life. We are all worthy of that one special person who will bring you back to your groove!
